from members originally hating the jackets to a specific color used to a once in a lifetime 139 000 thrift store fine here are eight facts about the masters green jacket number one there are two origin stories of the green jacket the first one is the idea for the green jacket came from co-founder and one of golf's greatest champions bobby jones while jones was attending a dinner in royal liverpool he noticed how the captains wore red jackets he brought this idea back to co-founder clifford roberts and they chose green for the color of the jackets that augusta national members would wear the other story is that clifford roberts thought was a great way to identify club members as a reliable source of information to visiting non-members and to let waiters know who got the check at dinner guess it depends on if your team bobby or team clifford number two the green jacket is a classic three button single breasted single vented coat featuring the augusta national golf club logo on the left chest pocket the jacket contains the owner's name stitched on the inside label along with the logo also appearing on the brass buttons the coat is made from roughly two and a half yards of tropical weight wool that comes from the fortsman co mill in dublin georgia the breast pocket patch is made by a b emblem company in weaverville north carolina and the logo stamped brass buttons are made by warberry company in massachusetts the color of the jacket is a dark green known as masters green if you're looking for the color yourself for a project you can find it under the pantone 342c because of all the materials used it takes roughly about a month to make a single green jacket from start to finish number three augustine national originally bought the green jackets from brooks brothers in new york in 1973 three years after the club opened however members were not fond of these original green jackets that they felt the material was too thick and uncomfortable in the warm weather they soon changed suppliers since 1967 hamilton tailoring company of cincinnati has been an exclusive maker of these green jackets but don't even think about trying to order one for yourself hamilton tailoring does not accept orders from the general public for such iconic article of clothing interestingly though nick falda who won the masters in 1989 1990 and 1996 had his jackets produced by nordstroms though there is always a chance you get lucky like one toronto sports writer when he found one of the jackets at a toronto thrift store and bought it for five dollars in 1994. the jacket's members name tag had been mysteriously cut out when it was found at the goodwill it was thought to be from the early 1950s with other members jackets from that era going up for about twenty thousand dollars this jacket's backstory and being known as the thrift store green jacket later be sold for 139 thousand dollars in 2013. number four from 1937 to 1948 only augusta national members wore the green jacket in 1949 sam sneed became the first winner to be honored with a green jacket and was then rewarded retroactively to all previous winners the jacket awarded to horton smith who won the inaugural augusta national invitational in 1934 sold for over 682 thousand dollars in 2013 an appropriately named company green jacket auctions that figure is believed to be the highest paid prize for a piece of golf memorabilia number five green jackets are kept on the club grounds and taking them off the premise is forbidden only the current champion can wear his jacket out in public and must return that jacket back by the next masters however in 1961 south africa's gary player became the tournament's first international winner and took the green jacket back to his home country when he returned the next year where he would lose in a playoff to arnold palmer player forgot to bring his jacket back when robbers reminded player that the jacket needed to be at augusta national clare responded by telling roberts well mr roberts if you want it back why don't you come fetch it robbers got a kick out of this and came up with a compromise with player number six one of the many great traditions at masters includes having the tournament's defending champion help the new champion slip into the green jacket if the winner is a returning champion from last year the augusta national president has the honor of presenting the returning champion with the green jacket this has occurred three times in masters history with jack nicholas in 1966 nick faldo in 1990 in tiger woods in 2002 number seven the green jacket that the members champions puts on at the ceremony is not the actual jacket he will keep and the winners are presented with a replica green jacket that they make heat commemorate their win of the masters tournament and it must be returned 12 months later before the next masters number eight winners of the masters must keep their green jacket whenever they play at augusta national or visit at any masters tournament there could be slightly over an estimated 330 green jackets with an estimated 300 members and 33 living former masters champions if you've enjoyed
