from a hurricane toppling a hotel empire roots in confederate literature to a hostage crisis involving a u.s president home of the masters a tradition unlike any other this is the dark history of augusta national golf course long before the masters was born the 345 acres of property were owned by dennis redmond redmond an irish immigrant who was a ultraculturist and a junior editor for the publication the southern cultivator the southern cultivator had been said to be the confederacy's oldest strongest and intellectually the most impressive agricultural journal containing articles of agriculture politics education and literature along with describing books published in the north as evil redmond utilized his land to create the fruitland nursery which specialized in fruit evergreens roses and many other exotic plants this is where he would build his country-style home otherwise known at the time as a plantation house which later would go on to become augusta's clubhouse in 1925 the property was sold to a famous miami developer mr j perry commodore stoltz for 2 million dollars which would be worth about 32 million in 2022. his vision was to bring a 300 room hotel and golf course as an escape for wealthy northerners in 1926 he began pouring the foundation and shipping in the steel girders and bathtubs for his plans directly behind the fruitlands home which he had planned to demolish later on in the project however in 1926 the great miami hurricane destroyed commodore stoltz's hotel empire and with the 1929 stock market crashed shortly after this would be the final blow to stoltz's plans which is what led to the property eventually being sold to bobby jones and clifford roberts more on that gem of a human later in 1930. bobby jones who was the world's top amateur at the time was going to be a very modest man so much so he designed all members to have their locker rooms located in the same area including his own which is probably why in how the champion's locker room was built in 1979 eight years after bobby passed away as i'm sure this was something he did not really empathize with the champion's locker room also overlooks another interesting change by augusta in their history the most famous entry in all of golf magnolia lane which as you can see in this 1897 fruitland nursery catalog was originally called magnolia avenue as an avenue is traditionally a straight road with a line of trees or shrubs running along each side which emphasizes the arrival at a landscape or agricultural future so i don't know why or the point of this chain while jones and roberts were building the course they had placed a bid and expected to host the 1934 us open however they were ultimately rejected and decided they would start their own tournament in 1933 the augusta invitational national tournament which was named by jones however in 1939 roberts convinced jones to allow the name to be changed to the masters gives a little bit different ring when you know this is the same person who once supposedly said to a reporter as long as i'm alive the golfers will be white and the caddies will be black and this remained an actual rule at the club until 1983 and it wasn't just for the members and their guests but for the masters itself as it was the last tournament to require pros to use host caddies and not their own with this mindset of roberts who was also once quoted to make an exception would be practicing discrimination in reverse along with his members they kept any african americans from being allowed to participate in any masters until 1975 eleven years after the abolishment of segregation laws when the 1974 macento open winner lee elders had earned a bid to the major elders received such a substantial amount of hate mail and phone calls that he feared for his safety during the week of the tournament he rented two homes to switch back and forth from always making sure he was never alone and was surrounded by people he trusted a year later robbers would step down from his position as a club president two years after elders broke through the color barrier with robert suffering from cancer and stroke he would walk down to the slope next to ike's pawn on the par 3 course and end his life with a single pistol shot to the temple doing so in the middle of the night to be sure the groundskeepers and not a member would find him first and not to interrupt the day of rounds if you're enjoying this video so far please go ahead and comment any other interesting facts i may have forgotten feel free to like it to help spread it to other people now back to the video at 2 25 pm on october 22nd in 1983. well ronald reagan was on the 16th hole playing his first round ever at the club a recently laid off man named charles harris would crash his truck through a lock gate at the club armed with a 38 caliber revolver he would take seven people hostage in the pro shop and demand to talk to the president about the thousands of u.s steel workers who were laid off earlier that day because it was losing business to foreign made steel over the course of the next two hours harris would release the hostages and after the president had left the property he would relinquish his gun and spend the next five years in prison in 1991 eight years after the hostage situation and the club's removal of the black only caddies facing years of scrutiny and pressure from outside groups and threats of the pga pulling out augusta would finally have his first black member 16 years after elders first played there in 27 years after segregation laws had been abolished since the club keeps its members a secret a small newspaper article just read saying augusta admitted its first black member later on it would be learned that it was television executive ron townsend that was the member a year later after he even refused membership by seoul creek golf and country club in alabama because he was black though the club finally had its first black member there's still a large demographic the exclusive club was excluding in 2002 martha burke started a campaign and protest against the private club first exclusion of women members the protests of the 2003 masters demanding to have sponsors pull their ad money led to augusta having cbs remove all advertisements from its broadcast for the next two years as they did not want outside parties making choices for their exclusive club 10 years later and 46 million dollars in settlements for a class-action gender discrimination lawsuit that was filed by eight female employees and representing the 2700 current and former employees the club finally had its first women members in 2012. investor and philanthropist starla moore and former secretary of state condoleezza rice with a third being the ibm ceo and president jeannie rometly in 2014 while having all ads pulled from a sporting event is pretty unusual for most this isn't the only time they have influenced what is broadcasted during their event while cbs has broadcasted the event since 1956 they've always been on one-year deals at their benefit so the club can always be able to dictate how their event is presented some of these conditions for the broadcast is the terminology that is used for instance the rough is not the rough but is instead the second cut fans or the gallery are not called such but rather referred to as patrons also these patrons are not allowed to run on the grounds at any time so we probably won't be seeing any scenes like this anytime soon rahimi's guidelines is jack witt taker found out in 1966 when he referred to the patrons as a mob he would not be welcomed back to the broadcast until 1972 while gary mccord has faced a lifetime ban from the event after stating the 17th green was cut so close it could have been bikini wax and for the players whose approach shots went behind the green then they'd be stuck out with the body bags also if you've ever watched the tournament wonder how they get the water so blue journalists also once wondered that took a sample of the water to see how they did it you would later find out that there was actually blue dye in it to get that amazing color this isn't the only interesting water effect too i guess as ray creek flows well beyond the course and the creek knows no prejudice about five miles south of the beautiful course it flows through such a trailer park with a much less scenic view showing a bit more of the reality of the area
