hundreds of men and women to create the magic of the films nominated for best visual effects they work with computers making art out of ones and zeros but computers don't make visual effects people do they are artists people who dream with their eyes wide open they breathe life into characters and worlds both beautiful and terrifying these unforgettable images are put on the screen by blood sweat tears and software but most of all by the driving force of unbridled human imagination for best visual effects the nominees are for ai artificial intelligence dennis muran scott farrar stan winston ladies and gentlemen the oscar-nominated stars of love story ally mcgraw and ryan o'neal [Applause] [Music] love's story was guided by tonight's recipient of the gene herschel humanitarian award our director arthur hiller now many of you uh outside the industry recognize arthur from his appearances on the oscar telecast when he was president of the academy but those of us inside the industry recognize arthur as a major supporter of so many charities and committees civil rights groups and educational institutions that we wonder how he ever found time to direct movies like love's story the in-laws the americanization of emily hospital silver streak and making love and in addition to lending his name and his wallet to at last count 45 different groups arthur has taken the sort of individual action that makes a difference in 1956 he cast a black actor as a medical doctor on a network television show the script had not specified the doctor's race later he cast a wheelchair bound actor as a security guard also not in the script and in the seventies arthur and his wife gwen smuggled books and clothing into what was then the soviet union to bring help to the refusenix who had been stripped of their jobs and many of their rights when they applied for visas to leave the country as president of the director's guild of america arthur helped organize committees for the women's rights and minority rights and created a directing program for minorities his love story is a love of mankind and the courage to put that love to work for all of us for these reasons and enough others to fill a whole three-hour show of his own we're absolutely overjoyed to present the gene herschel humanitarian award to our director arthur hiller [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you mama thank you papa it feels humbling to receive a humanitarian award for doing what my parents brought me up to do i had an unbelievably caring mother and father who lived their lives with the moral values of love and compassion of respect and responsibility of human dignity and and standing up for what's right even though they had a hard time earning a living they helped the poor and the hungry and they also helped others who needed the support of a friend or someone to stand up for for their rights they felt all other people as individual human beings and judge them by their actions not by their color or their race or their religion i and [Applause] we i wish i could say that i'm as strong as they were in all those areas but i'm so grateful to them for instilling these those values into my my loving sisters and me and i'm so grateful to my my loving wife and our wonderful children my wife so supportive and henrik and erica just can't be better like they're they're gwen and the kids are always behind me and sometimes pushing me to live up to those values it's so embarrassing to receive an award for for doing what you should be doing but [Applause] i must admit it it pleases me great feeling it especially honors me to receive it from this academy that i respect so deeply and that has always meant so much to me personally [Applause] [Music] oscar welcomes ben the good fortune of having such fantastic collaborators on this project uh peter jackson fran walsh philip o'boyens who guided me on an amazing journey through middle earth and it was just a tremendously rewarding experience to translate the words of tolkien into uh into music and i just feel uh blessed to be a part of this production um i want to thank my wife elizabeth and daughter may whose love and support are incredible to me and have just guided me on my journey thanks to bob shay michael lynn mark odetsky uh paul brusek barry osborne everybody at uh the crew in in tuxedo i love you all thank you very much [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's nice to see you scoring again our next presenter is an oscar-winning actor who has been nominated five times including this year for his performance as a very scary cop in training day he is so tough in that movie he's the only man who's not afraid to go out for a bite with mike tyson now he steals that's her it'll hit you later he steals he lies he cheats he murders and he's just been given a desk at caa i mean really he is so talented and there truly aren't enough oscars in the world to give him ladies and gentlemen all of our fantasies mr denzel washington [Applause] [Music] from time to time the academy bestows an honorary award on a member of the film industry sometimes for a body of work sometimes for work done to better the industry sometimes for the influence created among other filmmakers around the world this year they honor a man who qualifies in all three areas and who is also unique in the history of film they call him sidney poitier [Applause] before sydney african-american actors had to take supporting roles in major studio films that were easy to cut out in certain parts of the country but you couldn't cut sidney poitier out of a sydney fortier picture he was the reason a movie got made the first solo above the title african-american movie star he was unique [Applause] he was unique but he didn't do it alone others fought alongside him like this gentleman the oscar-winning producer of in the heat of the night sydney's good friend walter mirish [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you when we started the preparation of in the heat of the night i knew i was embarking on one of the most significant productions of my career what i didn't know was it was also the beginning of one of the most cherished friendships of my life tonight i'm privileged to stand beside sydney on this great occasion where the academy has seen fit to honor him again nearly forty years after his best actor award since then he's directed and produced many pictures he's also found time to distinguish himself as the author of two books as bahamian ambassador to japan as a director in a major media corporation but even more importantly as a wonderful husband to joanna and the father of six lovely daughters [Applause] he has also continued to do extraordinary film work that has brought to the screen his own unique attributes of integrity and character now let's look at casey lemon's film [Applause] these artists are very much like the black actors and actresses i know today only they were chained to stereotypes when some of them had the wherewithal to saw they gave birth to me he was something that uh hollywood had just never seen before a black leading man i i believe the first film i saw was was uh raising him in the sun recording on screen was uh in lily's of the field guess who's coming today [Music] this prince you just always knew that this was the cat cinderella was marion the beauty of sidney poitier is that his art reflects the dignity of his parents that i'm not performing this dignified persona this confidence this self-pride this is me this is how i see myself and this is how people see me exact terms are no financial arrangements [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the year he actually took home best actor it rose us all up as americans we all became better because of it the time has come at the time that sydney came to prominence in hollywood there was great change going on in america his ability to be compassionate towards those who don't understand them to be compassionate towards those who perhaps have some kind of prejudice against him it's inspiring this country was going through upheaval and he was right there there was a consciousness a virgil that's a funny name for boy that comes from philadelphia what do they call you up there they call me mr tibbs it was just like such a shock to see this black man slap this guy back you know you don't slap sydney you don't slap him it it made a statement to me about what it is to be a man i don't think that we should overlook the film destiny directed city point was the first african-american filmmaker to do a film that grossed over 100 million dollars certainly at that time was a massive sydney poitier is an american treasure and not an african-american treasure he is an american treasurer he's the standard for me and for a lot of black women he has inspired me he did it his way he does it his way and that's what i want i wouldn't be sidney poitier we are standing on his shoulders there would be none of us if there wasn't sydney and if i think for a moment it's too hard or that the way is insurmountable i just think of sidney poitier we have all been led by sydney and are still being led by him his courage to stand up and force hollywood to treat him equally with dignity and respect it's allowed me to dream the ripples just go on and on and continue to go on for actors in my generation and actors to come one word for me to describe sydney party would be courageous class supreme fearless majestic integrity compassion proud uncompromising grace possibility you are more than a measurable man you are a measure of an artist and a human being and with that we all say thank you congratulations on your award is well deserved thank you for all that you've done for us and continue to do for uh blazing betrayal for all that you are thanks for the inspiration letting me know it was possible i love you very much thank you sir thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you sidney poitier god bless you [Applause] lady ladies and gentlemen sidney poitier [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] i arrived in hollywood at the age of 22 in a time different than today's a time in which the odds against my standing here tonight 53 years later would not have fallen in my favor [Music] back then no route had been established for where i was hoping to go no pathway left in evidence for me to trace no custom for me to follow yet here i am this evening at the end of a journey that in 1949 would have been considered almost impossible and in fact might never have been set in motion were there not an untold number of courageous unselfish choices made by a handful of visionary american filmmakers directors writers and producers each with a strong sense of citizenship responsibility to the times in which they lived each unafraid to permit their art to reflect their views and values ethical and moral and moreover acknowledge them as their own they knew the odds that stood against them and their efforts were overwhelming and likely could have proven too high to overcome still those filmmakers persevered speaking through their art to the best in all of us and i benefited from their effort the industry benefited from their effort america benefited from their efforts [Applause] and in ways large and small the world has also benefited from their effort therefore with respect i share this great honor with the late joe mankowitz the late richard brooks the late ralph nelson the late daryl zaneck the late stanley kramer especially water whose friendship lies at the very heart of this moment guy green norman jewison and all others who have had a hand in altering the odds for me and for others without them this most memorable moment would not have come to pass and the many excellent young actors who have followed an admirable fashion might not have come as they have to enrich the tradition of american filmmaking as they have i accept this award in memory of all the african-american actors and actresses who went before me in the difficult years on whose shoulders i was privileged to stand to see where i might go my love [Applause] my love and my thanks to my wonderful wonderful wife my children my grandchildren my agent and friend martin baum and finally finally to those audience members around the world who have placed their trust in my judgment as an actor and filmmaker i thank each of you for your support through the years thank you [Music] [Applause] the movie that i think made the difference in my life it was to kill a monkey man and i understood for the first time in my life um the movies are sometimes entertainment and sometimes they are necessary my favorite film is twelve angry men was the first black and white film i've ever seen was probably not guilty it's really inspirational because it shows how a person can make a difference against all the odds [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] joining us in a few moments jennifer lopez josh hartnett and performances by sting faith hill everyone obviously none of us can look back on this past year without a deep sense of sorrow and grief that has become a part of all of our lives traditionally at this point in the show we pause to remember those members of the film community who are no longer with us but this year since september 11th we must stop this evening and mourn a great deal more than that would you all please rise and join me in a moment of silence for every single american hero who gave his or her life on september 11th thank you very much thank you if the events of this past year have taught us anything they have shown us that we must celebrate and honor life even in the face of death perhaps that's the true wonder of the medium that we gather here tonight to honor film freezes life in its finest hour with strength and courage and laughter and joy and tonight since we also want to pay tribute to those members of our community who have left us since we last gathered what better way than by celebrating some of the unforgettable moments that they have given us in what one of our departed friends used to love to call magic time of course the true magic is that because of film his spirit and the spirit and the work of all that you're about to see up on this screen will truly live on forever yes who is it captain it is on the instant over and i just threw your stinking palm tree overboard every day congratulations who's the lucky girl i am how about a nice round of applause for mr stoner am i drunk and i don't do my job a couple of drinks we have more than a couple of drinks we get drunk they do in one box wow tell me about it jim makes it so simple that's a good thing in the financial advisor your 401k we'll just roll it over you won't miss a beat oh that's great from college to retirement planning our financial advisors help clients realize their dreams [Music] the most powerful place in the land is also the most secretive moment of truth how do you vote step inside the court there's no middle ground here i didn't mean to incite a riot we screwed up we're idiots mistakes happen let's just make sure they happen in somebody else's chambers there's some reporter digging around in ancient history i just hate to see you ambushed where do you draw the line plotline from the producer of er in the west wing sally fieldstars the court tuesday at 10 9 central on abc for those of you keeping score at home score at home ciao please the lips are failing we got hours to go let me try this again for those keeping score at home the schizophrenic mathematicians have two and the hobbits have four now we're going to look at love and death in a bizarre fantasy world with heavily made up drunks and weird little people no again it's not liza's wedding moulin rouge in which yes do child in which baslerman has recreated a nightclub in the turn of the century paris famous for drinking dancing and debauchery a swirling paranormal of music costumes and color and all of it done apparently without a director ladies and gentlemen you just kick butt luck you hear what i'm saying tonight ladies and gentlemen moulin rouge this story is about love what we're doing here is that we're using what i like to think of as the big lie that is we're creating an artificial world to reveal the big truth come and get me boys [Applause] i believe you were expecting me the thing with the musical is that you're trying to make a very simple story love you you the boy and then you tell it in a complicated world [Applause] when you are given a canvas like the my rouge you have this fabulous design challenge because what it means is that you're taking period references you're examining what it actually meant to someone and then translating it into a visual that a modern audience can access everything must come together moment by moment to take the audience on a journey and tell the story [Music] [Applause] ladies and gentlemen two-time oscar winner barbra streisand [Music] [Applause] he's always interesting he's always interested he's very smart very private he's self-assured but shy and i adored working with him robert redford's work as an actor director and producer always represents the man himself the intellectual the artist the cowboy he has a passion for telling stories that reflect the strengths and the vulnerabilities of the american spirit our struggle to achieve what is highest in our nature and though we don't always succeed robert redford's films make certain that we celebrate the effort redford took charge of his own career from the very beginning always working closely with writers his work as an actor and as a director is always skillfully subtle restrained and yet deeply emotional he's a listener whether he's exploring the shadow of american politics the hidden emotional life of the perfect american family or a nation's disillusionment always a progressive thinker and wanting to give something back in 1981 he established the sundance institute which has become a platform for new artists to develop their skills and has given the world the festival has given the world a first look at new generations of bold and talented independent voices his impact on the film industry is indelible it's impossible to reduce it all to four minutes but here are some of the reasons that robert redford remains a beloved and invaluable force in american film i wasn't cheating i wasn't cheating you can die for that matter you can both die really if he invites us to stay then we'll go we're going to leave anyone he's gotta invite us to stick around you're drawing it he's ready you know how fast he's i'm over the hill but it can't happen to you that's just what i want to hear [Music] don't think we can any longer play off the young against the lack against the white british against the whole i say there's got to be a better way it's got to be a better way can't any longer play off black against old young against poor this country cannot house its houseless feed it's foodless hi i'm bob woodward of the washington post yes yes what if you're gonna do it do it right here you're gonna hype it hype it with the facts i don't mind what you did i mind the way you did it bill of rights what bill of rights we don't have any bill of rights we don't have free speech in this country we never will have what are you telling me to do sit by and shut up just because it's dangerous i'm telling you it's a woman that's what i'm telling and that those men and their families are only going to get hurt and that nothing is going to change nothing and after jail after five or six years of bad blood when it's practical for some fascist producer to hire some communist writer to save his ass because his hit movie's in trouble he'll do it i really want to get a shot of the three of you men give me the camera calvin not until i get a picture of the two of you hell hang on a second camera [Music] this was an idea that was born out of experience not just some token gesture of goodwill for me personally i wanted to try to create something that i never had that i felt i missed and that was a sense of community so that we could maintain some kind of purity in a business that's hard to where filmmakers come together and share the work amongst themselves you take pictures beautiful pictures but of empty streets and trees with no leaves november why haven't you asked me to untie your hands [Music] keep going teacher lady [Music] i were to offer you one million dollars for one night with your wife hey i don't mean nothing i just don't know many regular girls at all i don't even know you [Music] you know me i'm just like you it's two in the morning and i don't know nobody [Music] my god you're hideous what even brother missed you too when it's done if i'm dead kill him love to [Music] [Applause] i'm very very proud to bestow the academy of motion picture arts and sciences honorary oscar for lifetime achievement to a man who gave me one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my career i was thrilled to be his leading lady and i'm thrilled to present this award to robert redford [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] thank you i guess this is a sequel huh well uh barbara's right i am i am shy it's a funny kind of business to be shy in but certainly feel that way tonight but i think there certainly is a word of appreciation in order for being honored in such a way you know much of what happens here tonight is probably going to be forgotten in a week or so what's not going to be forgotten is what it means to those of us who are receiving awards or being honored tonight and to those close to us for those people it could be the moment of a lifetime so in my appreciation i'd i'd like to say what it means for me i've spent most of my life just focused on the road ahead i'm not looking back but now tonight i'm seeing in the rear view mirror that there's something i've not thought about much called history and what moves me tonight is that i'm being joined by colleagues and peers to reflect on that history there really are only two areas one is my personal work which is the most important to me and the other is trying to put something back into an industry that's been good to me and of course sundance is a manifestation of that the result well a grand grand collaboration of artists and colleagues who've joined to support and help give a voice to new artists if those people who have supported us along the way who have believed and participated tonight i would really like to thank you deeply we have a great industry and we all know that we're here because we know it we love it it's a solid and healthy industry but even though it is i really believe it's going to be important in the years to come to make sure that we embrace the risks as well as the sure things to make sure that freedom of artistic expression is nurtured and kept alive [Applause] because i believe that in keeping diversity alive it'll help keep our industry alive as we can see of late the world run is in a sea change it's just simply not the same world anymore as we all struggle to find our way with it to get a grip to make sense out of the chaos and the destruction in the tragedy one word that emerges is the word freedom it's importance it's rarity and how fortunate we are to have it to be able to be part of a freedom of expression that allows us as artists to tell our stories in our own way about the human condition the complexities of life the world around us is a gift and not one to be taken lightly then i think the glory of art is that it can not only survive change we can lead it as an artist i just can't think of a better life than the one that i've been blessed with it's just a great ride with many wonderful relationships and experiences along the way and it's a ride i hope to continue so tonight i want to acknowledge my family my love for them my lady the academy and all of you for giving me this honor thank you [Applause] please welcome a nominee tonight academy award winner russell crowe [Music] [Applause] [Music] good evening folks it's my pleasure and privilege to announce the best performance by an actress in a leading role the nominees are halle berry in monsters ball [Applause] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] judy dench and iris how would we know those of us who live in our minds anyway other people would tell us would they john [Applause] nicole kidman can move on rules [Applause] [Music] what is this feeling [Applause] spasik for in the bedroom all right it is my choice is not to scream at the world maybe one of us has to be reasonable around you you ever think of that gene matt i don't know about you but i miss my son i'm glad you have time for reasons so what you imparted to frank that sense of reason i know what you think that i was too lenient that i had him get away with everything [Applause] and renee zellweger in bridget jones's diary thank you daniel that is very good to know but if staying here means working within 10 yards of view frankly i'd rather have a job wiping saddam hussein's ass [Music] [Applause] [Music] i loved marilyn monroe and probably one of her last film it's the misfits not only her beauty but it was most of all her incredible fragility and sensibility when she's on screen you know the light you know seems to arrive right from her skin julia roberts and pretty woman oh i love her i think um she has the most beautiful smile and she lights up a screen she came from off the streets and you know she had a dream i thought it was very cool [Applause] julia roberts presents the oscar for best actor when we return i don't think anybody could possibly leave now [Applause] [Applause] a legend reborn cadillac cts breakthrough [Music] [Music] yeah sometimes that is funny we could all use a little help that is funny [Music] [Applause] whether i find a place that is [Music] [Music] there are some things money can't buy for everything else there's mastercard accepted everywhere dogs are all right the 74th
