when it comes to terrible signings other leagues give it a go but no one quite does it like the Premier League the League's boundless resources impatient owners and chairman and an all consuming sense of desperation often combined to see teams from England's Top Flight taken for a ride what else could possibly explain Manchester United and Chelsea paying Juventus and Inter Milani combined total of almost £200 million for two players that they had previously sold for Less than3 million Stoke City breaking their Club record to sign Gianelli Imola and Manchester City paying in excess of40 million almost 10 years ago for eloquin mangala it's not just overseas teams who see Premier League clubs coming Leicester city managed to rinse Chelsea for £35 million for Danny drinkwater Newcastle United somehow convinced Liverpool that Andy Carrol was worth the same fee all the way back in 2011 and Arsenal and Manchester United managed to strike up a swap deal in January 2018 which rather impressively ended up working out absolutely terribly for not just both clubs but both players involved as well it's actually quite the feat well in today's video we are focused on the slightly more recent past specifically since the beginning of the current decade that's a period of just under four years so far spanning eight transfer Windows given that it's probably too early to truly write off anyone signed in the last 12 months even if things have so far worked out pretty tragically for the likes of Robert Sanchez Mason Mount and for rather different reasons Sandro talii we're really talking about a period of just 3 years and six transfer Windows how many truly disastrous signings can there really have been during that time well let's find out shall we here are the seven worst Premier League signings since 2020 with plenty of dishonorable mentions thrown in for good measure seventh Anthony there are some people who think that Anthony is genuinely useless that he offers absolutely nothing and that he shouldn't be starting games for any team in the Premier League let alone for Manchester United I'm not one of those people I saw Yap Stam State recently on the overlap that when Anthony was at ax he felt as though he looked decent against weak opposition but nothing particularly special and that he couldn't believe the feed that manester United had paid to sign him personally whenever I watched Anthony and ax he was one of the standout players and I still think that he is gifted on the ball and has a very useful left foot there can be no doubt however that the sheer magnitude of the transfer and the size of the fee 8.75 million up front and £ 4.25 million in further addons was excessive to the extreme and it somewhat set Anthony up to fail is an anony any better for instance than another Winger named Anthony namely Anthony Gordon who was signed for what seemed at the time like a hefty 40 to 45 million subject to addons but was still roughly half of what Manchester United paid for Anthony Gordon has made 12 goal contributions in 16 Premier League appearances this season meanwhile Anthony has made none in 13 in total since joining Manchester United for the second highest fee that the club has ever paid for a player trailing only Paul Pogba anony has scored eight goals and made three assists in 62 appearances in all competitions that in of itself would be a miserable return for a more than £18 million pound recruit over his first 18 months at the new club but it is what could most generously be described as Antony's baggage combined with his underwhelming stats and performances that make him the first inclusion in this seven though Anthony is still playing for Manchester United now he he was removed from the Brazil squad in early September and is yet to return owing to high-profile allegations of domestic abuse made by his exgirlfriend and two other women Manchester United as they attempted to with Mason Greenwood before panicking after they sense the public mood with that case having been even more high-profile in the UK and the evidence so overwhelming have stood by Anthony releasing a statement in which they simultaneously condemned domestic abuse and welcomed Anthony back into first training and said that he'd be available for selection basically then Anthony was extraordinarily expensive he hasn't been very good and he has added yet more toxicity to an already extremely toxic football club but other than that 10 out of 10 great signing sixth Fabio Silva whilst it is very easy to slate Anthony without feeling in the slightest bit bad about it it seems almost slanderous for me to be mean about Fabio Silva and not just because you all used to say that I look like him when wolves first signed him honestly Silva seems like a good professional and an honest lad who has worked hard at wolves things just haven't worked out it can't be easy joining a Premier League team for a club record-breaking fee when you have only just turned 18 with people expecting you to immediately adapt to the rigers of the English game on the pitch and to a new country culture and language off it the reality is that although Sila had an exceptional reputation youth team football he had only ever made 12 League appearances and 21 first te appearances in all competitions scoring just one goal in the league and three in all competitions when wolves agreed to pay £35 million to sign him as I've said in the past maybe that is the kind of gamble that Manchester City or Real Madrid can take but for wolves foring out a fee like that on an unknown quantity is one hell of a risk wolves obviously viewed Silva as an underst study to Star Center for forward R Jimenez who had scored 27 goals the previous season but just a couple of months into Silva's debut campaign Jimenez suffered a skull fracture ruling him out for the remainder of the Season Silva was thrown in at the deep end then aged only 18 and in a single swim situation the pressure came too early for Silva and proved to be too great he made 37 appearances That season but could only manage to score four goals lots of players take a season to adapt to a new league especially the Premier League but in Silva's second season things went from bad to worse he failed to score a single goal in 26 appearances and consequently spent last season un loaded Andel and PSV Silva scored 16 goals in 51 games across both of those lone spells last season but back at wolves even with a clean slate under new manager Gary O'Neal it is becoming increasingly obvious that a clean break is required for both parties Sila was always likely to struggle to justify the huge fee that wolves paid for him the timing of himes's injury certainly didn't help and wolves's subsequent Financial issues particularly relating to profit and sustainability rules have been in large part caused by signing an 18-year-old who has since scored five goals in 73 games for them I still wouldn't be at all surprised to see Silva succeed in another European Top Flight though I don't think that he'll ever become a 35 million player and I am almost certain that he won't become one at Mol You Fifth Donnie vanderbach credit where it's due Donnie vander's personal life doesn't appear to be as cous or chaotic as some other Manchester United players but outside of that it's hard to imagine how his move to Old Trafford could really have gone much worse a graduate of the aax youth ranks Vander bake starred in an aax team that won a league and cup double as well as reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and coming within seconds of the final following victory iies against the likes of Benfica Real Madrid and Juventus vaner scored 17 goals that season and made 13 assists having been given a more advanced role by Eric ten hog but he could play anywhere in Midfield typical of the Ajax mold vaner seem to have a wide skill set plenty of athleticism and an impressive football IQ maybe he accidentally left all of those things in Amsterdam though because after Manchester United paid £35 million to sign him plus5 million p in future add-ons he barely got a look in as with so much of Manchester United's transfer activity over the past decade it didn't appear to make any sense although vaner bake had played in a few different positions at Ajax it was clear that Manchester United boss oiga Sola viewed him as an attacking midfielder and with Bruno Fernandez being by far the best player at Al Trafford at the time playing in attack of Midfield Vander spent the next 18 months Gathering splinters in his ass sat on the on the bench a low move to Everton in January 2022 was just as underwhelming with vaner spending most of its sidelined through persistent thigh injuries and well not much has changed since then there was a hope amongst some that being reunited with Eric enog under whom he played his best football van debate could actually come good that hasn't been the case the Rutman has played Just 21 minutes of football this season coming in the form of two substitute appearances both against Palace one in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup contracted to the club until 2025 Manchester United will be hoping that van debate can do something at irre Frankfurt in the second half of this season who he looks set to join on Loan in January so that they can at least recoup some of that 35 to4 million that they spent on him plus wages fourth ralu Lukaku it's easy to be wise after the fact in football but after Chelsea resigned romu Lukaku all of the big brained pundits on Sky Sports were convinced that he was the missing piece in the jigsaw that would carry Chelsea to the title don't forget Chelsea signed Lukaku for 97 and5 million immediately after they had won the Champions League in the summer of 2021 and their performances in the Champions League knockout stage and following Thomas tuel's arrival more generally appeared to have melted some people's brains on lukaku's second Chelsea debut which was second game of the season having already won 3-0 against Crystal Palace Lukaku steamrolled Pablo maray before putting the ball in the back of the net scoring the first goal for Chelsea in a 2-0 win away at Arsenal and after the game Roy Keane Soul Campbell and Co covering the game for Sky Sports were all firmly in agreement Lukaku was the missing ingredient and with him Chelsea with a favorites to win the Premier League title and arsenal were a million miles off them that seems like an aw awul long time ago now what actually happened is that Lukaku only scored seven more goals in 26 Premier League games that season Chelsey finished third 19 points behind Manchester City and 18 behind Liverpool and now of course they find themselves 10th in the Premier League table meanwhile Arsenal are the league leaders at least at the time of this recording Lukaku hasn't played for Chelsea since the 2021-22 season he spent last season unloaded into Milan where he scored 10 sag goals and 14 in 37 in all competitions on route to a Champions League final and he has already scored 12 goals in 19 games so far this season and a former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on loan at roma roma paid Chelsea 8 million pound or 9.3 million e to take Lukaku on loan for the season which is about the same fee that interpay last season but a repeated stumbling block in negotiations has been lukaku's reported 325 £5,000 a week or 17 million a year Wages that's much too rich for Roma who offered to cover 7.5 million EUR of lukaku's salary over the 10 months that he's contracted to the club Lukaku took a pay cut in order to facilitate the deal though it is unclear if or more likely how much of his wages Chelsea are still paying Lukaku will be 31 by the end of this season and roma have the option to sign him for £37 million so the best case scenario for Chelsea is that they lose 60 million on the Belgian plus tens of millions in wages he was the missing piece of the jigsaw only if in this analogy you had lost one piece of the jigsaw that you were using tried to jam a piece from another jigsa into where the actual piece was meant to go ended up destroying the entire jigsaw by trying to force it into place too hard and then your house burnt down killing your entire family left inside third Jaden Sanchez what could possibly be worse than a jigsaw going so badly wrong that all of your loved ones are incinerated why Manchester United's signing of jayen sancho of course probably for the first time in this seven this was a signing that I'm critiquing solely with the benefit of hindsight there is a degree of hindsight involved in all of them of course I am literally assessing each signing primarily based on what has happened since their arrivals but Anthony's fee always seems Steep and silver like a major for example but jayen Sancho by contrast though he set Manchester United back £73 million or £85 million euros I actually thought was a fantastic piece of business I might even have used the word bargain of course that now looks ridiculous but it's important to put it in context over the preceding two seasons Sancho had made 76 goal contributions in 82 appearances for rucia Dortmund making him one of the most productive forwards in Europe and that was between the ages of 19 and 21 even if a player put up those kinds of numbers and those kinds of performances now after Sancho's ill- fated move I still think we will be talking about 100 million pound plus valuations supposing that they didn't have any release Clauses unfortunately for everyone involved Sancho has proved to be just about the furthest thing from a bargain imaginable in 82 appearances for Manchester United since his arrival the former Manchester City trainee has scored 12 goals and made six assists and that was when he was actually playing for the last 4 months so almost the entirety of this season Sancho has been frozen out by Eric ten hog owing to the Dutchman criticizing Sancho's levels in training and Sancho subsequently accusing him of lying since September 14th Sancho hasn't even been training with the Manchester United First Team all while earning a reported £250,000 a week over the course of his 5year deal deal Sancho's contract is said to be worth some £65 million that not only takes Sancho's total cost to Manchester United to about1 140 million while he neither plays nor trains with the first team it's also said to be putting any potential suits off Sancho's talent and track record is such that there is likely to be a long line of Clubs who would be willing to take a chance on him but the line of clubs willing or even able to pay Sancho or anyone for that matter third million a year plus whatever transfer fee Manchester United would demand is about as long as the Quee to have someone take a dump on you from a great height minus true Jordy all in all a disastrous signing and with every week that Sancho picks up a paycheck without playing and his market value further tumbles it only gets worse second ran Brewster fear not faio Silva you're not the only young player who is getting mudded on this channel over the festive season once again I've never heard anyone suggest that ran Brewster is a poor professional or has a b attitude but with young players there are just so many variables that make it near enough impossible to accurately predict their development in all but a few exceptional cases which is why it's probably best not to spunk most of your budget in a mad gamble on one of them wolves have learned that lesson the hard way with silver but Sheffield United signing of ran Brewster proved to be much more costly in the long run in their first season back in the Premier League since the 20067 campaign just 2 years after Chris Wilder finally brought the blades's sixe stinted league one to an end Sheffield United finished ninth in the Premier League in one of the most impressive debut campaigns in English football's Top Flight of the modern era it's quite remarkable to think that less than 4 years ago they finished 10 points above Newcastle almost 20 clear of Aston Villa and only one place and two points behind current Premier League leaders Arsenal to build upon that Monumental achievement the blades made young ran Bruce to their Mar signing forking out a club record 23 a half million pounds to bring the then 20-year-old to Bram Lane let's be charitable to Sheffield United Lord knows they need it right now Brewster was one of England's most prolific and impressive youth team players he had impressed on loan at Swansea and Liverpool still had enough reservations about losing him that they insisted on having A40 million buyback Clause written into the deal there is of course a huge difference between playing against men and boys but one would have thought that brw has 11 goals in 22 games on loan at Swansea constituted sufficient evidence that he would at least be prolific at Championship level well that's not quite how things have panned out in his debut campaign Brewster didn't score a single goal in 30 Games as Sheffield United plummeted from 9th to 20th Place in the Premier League and were relegated much more damning than blank for an entire campaign though is the fact that in 30 appearances in the championship over two seasons in which Sheffield United were among the best teams in the league Brewster still only managed to score four goals I personally find it fairly bizarre given how good his movement was and how cleanly he struck the ball both at Youth Level and at Swansea and I can only assume that his confidence has been absolutely shot to pieces and it is having a big effect on him whatever the cause in the fourth year of his 5-year de Sheffield United's Club record signing now age 23 has scored five goals and made one assist in 68 appearances in all competitions signings don't come much worse than that and he's only denied top spot by what is probably the worst signing of all time first Jean Kevin augustan a signing so bad that I recently made an entire 20-minute video about it entitled the worst signing of all time I could quite legitimately be accused of click debate if I didn't then at least name Jean Kevin augustan as the worst Premier League signing since 2020 a much more specific set of parameters so I wasn't about to do that not just in the interest of reputation management but also because Augustine is by far the worst Premier League signing since 2020 sure Fabio Silva and ran Brewster have been bad and jayen Sancho and Donny Vander don't even play but at least wolves Sheffield United and Manchester United wanted to assign those four players at the time of their arrivals Leeds United didn't even want John Kevin augustan when they were forced to pay close to2 million to sign him basically Leeds took a gustan on loan from RB leig in January 2020 just a few days before the end of the January transfer window as they pushed a promotion to the Premier League under Marcelo bielsa as part of augustan loan agreement Leeds will be obligated to sign the Frenchman for a fee of 17.7 million pound if they managed to win promotion unfortunately following three substitute appearances augustan suffered a muscle injury and upon his return the notoriously demanding the Elsa wasn't particularly impressed with his work rate industry or stamina as a result augustan never fought his way back into the lead's team or played for the club ever again on the 30th of June when austan loan deal expired Leeds released him from his contract and allowed him to return to liic however because of the covid-19 lockdown That season which had seen the campaign halted and extended by several weeks lead still had six games to play that season and hadn't yet won promotion when augustan Departed as far as leads were concerned given the contract name the end date as being June 30th and they hadn't been promoted by then the promotion Clause had been voided and they were under no obligation to sign a gustan RB leig disagreed arguing that whatever the date specified the Spirit of the deal was clear if Leeds won promotion this season they would be obligated to sign augustan in the end the case went to a FIFA panel who found in favor of leig B Leeds challenged the panel's ruling taking the case all the way to the court of arbitration for sport in November 2022 they lost again and were finally ordered to pay Leipzig £1 18.4 million because Leeds had never accepted their obligation to sign a gustan they had never paid him as well leaving the player himself in limbo in April 2023 FIFA's dispute resolution chamber ordered that leads pay a further 24.5 million to Augustine himself in unpaid wages leads have also appealed that decision and are awaiting a response but history suggests that legal battles relating to Jean Kevin augustan tend to end fairly badly for them augustan therefore look septicos leads in excess of40 million in total for 48 minutes of football before they'd officially signed him or almost a million pound a minute making him quite possibly the most expensive per minute signing of all time and that is before you factor in any additional legal costs which you know tend not to be cheap especially for such a complex drawn out and indeed still ongoing case the financial burden on the club screwed them in terms of their budget in the Premier League along with some other poor signings it must be said and last season they were relegated from the Premier League for my money and thankfully none of the sums quoted in today's video were my own money those are the seven worst Premier League signings since 2020 the likes of Hakim zes V VOR Teo verer Nicola blasic Danny in twice Philip coutinho Jan Lucas skaka Gonzalo GES kaduk Kali Calvin Phillips Rich harison Mark kukura Andrea Nana Mao mudrick Sandro tanali Wesley fana Robert Sanchez and Mason Mount all made my short list among many others though for a variety of different reasons some because I think that it is still a little early and others just because I think that the seven that I included were worse signings than them none of them quite featured I am sure that they'll all be delighted that I at least mention them though anyway that is it for today's video but thank you all very much as ever for watching hit the like button if you enjoyed it let me know your thoughts Down
