[Music] number one in 1893 Hawley Harvey Crippen married his second wife Cora Turner in Jersey City America seven years later in 1900 they moved to London he was employed as a representative form unions remedies a company making homeopathic remedies while Cora using the name Belle Elmore had aspirations to be a music hall artist unfortunately Belle had no talent whatsoever in fact neither Belle nor Cora was the real name of mrs. Griffin she had been born Cunegonde mahkumat ski and was the daughter of a Russian polish father and a German mother she was also a most overbearing and dominant character her long-suffering husband supported her ambitions to be first an opera singer and when that didn't work out a singer in the Music Hall but she had very little success all she did manage to get out of her career was a few showbiz eNOS friends and the position of treasurer of the Music Hall lady's guild in London in September 1905 dr. Crippen and his wife took a lease on 39 hilldrup Crescent in holo a part of the thinking behind this move was the De Pere could now have separate bedrooms Belle had never really been a sexual person and according to what Crippen would later say all physical relations between them ceased in 1907 Crippen meanwhile had fallen in love the object of his desire was Ethel and Eve a typist who worked for him at about the same time that Crippen stopped having sex with Belle he and Ethel became lovers this situation continued until 1910 on the evening of Monday 31 January 1910 the Crippen's threw a dinner party for two close friends of Belle's Paul and Clara mark Nettie the meal passed pleasantly enough except for one incident Paul Martin Nettie had asked to use the toilet and because Crippen didn't discord him upstairs to show him where it was Belle berated him by the time the martinet is finally left it was around 1:00 a.m. on Monday 1 February it would be the last time that anyone saw Belle Elmore alive over the next week or so people began to ask where Belle was Crippen said that she had gone to America as the days passed this story was amended and now she had fallen ill finally Crippen told people that his wife had passed away there was however one problem with this Ethel and Eve had started wearing some of Belle's jewelry and by the end of February she had moved in with Crippen at hilldrup Crescent friends grew suspicious and in due course those suspicions were passed on to the police on 8 July chief inspector Walter Duke called at hilldrup Crescent where he found ethel alone Crippen it seems was at work so do visited him there and the two returned together to he'll drop Crescent where Crippen happy Lea showed the officer around the house he also told do a different story Belle had left him for another man almost certainly Bruce Miller an American she had met in late 1903 do told Crippen that it would be better if Belle contacted him to confirm this story and Crippen said that he would place an advertisement in certain newspapers asking for her to make contact things now moved very quickly the next day 9 July Crippen shaved off his distinctive mustache and with Ethel and Eve disguised as a boy traveled to Brussels there they bought tickets for passage to Canada traveled on to Antwerp and there boarded the SS Montrose travelling his father and son at about the same time Chief Inspector do returned to he'll drop Crescent he was surprised to find Crippen and ethel missing and decided to make another routine search of the house in the cellar he noticed some loose bricks in the floor officers were ordered in to make a more thorough search and beneath those bricks they found the remains of a body the body was headless limbless and boneless little more than pieces of flesh but it was female it was time to find Crippen aboard the Montrose the father and son were watched with interest they seemed to be unduly affectionate and were constantly holding hands added to that the boys clothing seemed to be very ill-fitting captain Kendall had his suspicions and telegraphed a message to Scotland Yard do now determined to intercept a father and son boarded a faster ship the SS lor entik and the hunt was on on Sunday 31 July do and other officers boarded the Montrose as it sailed up the st. Lawrence the father and son were identified as Crippen and Ethel and Eve both were rested and after three weeks were escorted back to England to face trial it was decided that the pair should not be tried together Crippen would face his trial first and once that verdict had been determined Ethel and Eve would take her turn in the dock to be tried as an accessory so it was that on 18 October Crippen stood alone in the dock at the Old Bailey before the Lord Chief Justice of England Lord a verse stone the proceedings would last until 22 October Crippen's defense was simple the body found in the cellar of his home was not bells the body must have been of some poor unknown woman and been placed there before he and Bell had moved him it was therefore crucial to the prosecution to prove that the body was bells one piece of the flesh found in the shallow grave had borne a scar and medical records showed that Bell had such a scar on her lower abdomen more conclusive was the fact that the remains had been wrapped in a pyjama jacket and a tag inside that jacket led to the manufacturer's Jones brothers they confirmed that this particular cloth and pattern were not issued until late 1908 proving that the body must have been placed there after that date this and the scar was consistent with the body being that of Bell Elmore medical tests had shown that the flesh contained traces of high Essene a poison and it was known that Crippen had purchased five grains of that substance on 17 January 2 weeks before Bell had vanished it was enough for the jury who took just under 30 minutes to find Crippen guilty of his wife's murder on 25 October Evelyn Eve was put on trial as an accessory to murder and found not guilty a subsequent appeal on behalf of Crippen was dismissed and his death sentence was confirmed on Wednesday 23 November 1910 48 year-old Crippen was hanged at Pentonville by John Ellis and William Willis Crippen's last request had been for a photograph of Ethel and some of her letters to be buried with him in his unmarked grave the request was granted number 2 the true story of Peter Falcone oh and his girlfriend Joanne Lee's remains one of the strangest crime events to have taken place in Australia falcone Oh mysteriously disappeared in the Australian outback in July 2001 while the couple travelled around in a combi van Falcone OHS body has never been found and he is now presumed dead the events leading up to his disappearance the investigations and court cases are interesting but has the truth really been discovered Falcone oh and Lee's were travelling at night along the stuart highway near Barrow Creek between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory on 14 July 2001 MS Lee's said that at some point shortly after passing through Barrow Creek about 8 p.m. when it was dark they became aware that another vehicle was following the van that vehicle a white four-wheel-drive utility fitted with a bull bar pulled alongside the van its interior light was switched on it was driven by a man wearing a black baseball cap with a motif on it and a long-sleeve shirt with what appeared to be a t-shirt under it he appeared to have a Mexican mustache that drooped down past the sides of his mouth a dog was also seen to be sitting on the passenger seat of the utility around 11 kilometres s north of Barrow Creek at about 8:15 p.m. the man waves the Kombi over he told them that he had noticed that their combi had engine trouble after Falcone I went to the rear of the vehicle with the man to investigate Lee said she heard a shot fired the man then threatened leaves with a small gun tied her up and covered her head and pushed her into the back of his ute Lee says she escaped while the man was distracted apparently while moving Falcone OHS body she hid for five hours in nearby scrub bushes on 15th July Sunday at about 1:00 a.m. Lee's emerges from the scrub onto the highway and out in front of a bulls road train truck being driven by Vince Miller then stopped about a kilometre down the road and Joanne ran towards the road train Vince got out of the truck and spoke to Joanne he started to help her look for her boyfriend but when she told him her attacker had had a gun he decided it would be best to go for help he drove her south to the Barrow Creek Road house where they contacted police by 7:00 a.m. the NT police had launched a search for mr. Falcone oh and the gunman quickly they found a pool of blood covered with dirt beside the Stuart white this blood was later DNA matched top at her Falcone oh but strangely his blood had been mixed with animal blood the police also later found the combi driven well off the road into the scrub Falcone OHS body however has never been found expert Aboriginal trackers called from a nearby settlement could find no sign of tracks of anyone other than Lee's in the vicinity after four years of grueling investigations in which over 2,500 suspects had been identified but no real leads and no body police tracked down and arrested truck driver Bradley Murdock he was convicted of murder and is still in jail despite claiming he did not do it many experts on the case agree with him and evidence of a setup has been reported what happened to Falcone OHS body this is the greatest remaining mystery and the linchpin of Murdoch's defense show me the body is his constant challenge to judges and police an impossible escape one of the points used to weaken Miss Lee's story of escape was the manner in which she slipped out through to the rear of the four-wheel-drive utility in court she admitted her original account may have been wrong she may have been pushed into the back of the vehicle through canvas awnings at the side plus the issue of her impossible escape from the cable ties used to restrain her hands behind her back in court she quickly slipped her neck Dee bound hands back to her front instantly putting that particular question to rest as Falcone Oh still alive there was also the story told by Melissa Kendal and Robbie Browne who worked at a service station in the town of Bork they say they served a man who matched Peter Falcone yos description a week after the events at Barrow Creek they were stunned to see him walk through the door as his picture was in that day's newspapers he had entered the shop with another man and a woman one of the match the photo fit pictures issued by police they said the Bourque Falcone o departed with some chocolate recently whispers of money trouble drug connections and Falcone OHS connections to the underworld have started to be uncovered in 2011 a Melbourne lawyer convicted for involvement in a large cocaine importation ring said he knew Falco Niall was still alive he offered no evidence to back his assertion but insisted Murdoch had been framed number three on April 18th 1976 approximately 150 nautical miles from the southwest coast of Ireland the crew of a Spanish fishing trawler the Eduardo pandal spotted an object floating in the water as the crew approached they saw that it was a small sailing boat the vessel was floating vertically its bow completely submerged after hoisting the boat onto the trawlers deck the pandals crew conducted a search of its cabin amongst spoiled cans of food and nautical equipment they found four forms of identification a passport driver's license health insurance card and a University of california-irvine ID the boat was named ocean wave and it belonged to the conceptual artist baz jan adder based on the barnacles attached to the boats hull the captain of the pandal Don Manuel cast an era a Ferran concluded that the ocean wave was adrift for around six months Adar's body was never recovered an ER had set sail from Chatham Massachusetts ten months earlier on July 9 1975 his departure was documented by his wife Mary Sue at her Anderson who photographed at her onboard the ocean wave as it was towed out from the harbour Adar's destination was falleth england from there he was to travel to the ground and your museum in the netherlands for an exhibition of his work the artist conceived of his journey which was estimated to take anywhere between two to three months as part of an artwork titled in search of the miraculous had he succeeded the ocean wave would have been the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic Anna took a camera in several notebooks with him none of which were recovered a number of questions arose in the wake of the artists disappearance what happened to him was he really dead or had he staged his disappearance did he commit suicide and if so had that been his intention the entire time these questions became more pointed due to the artistic nature of Adar's journey the resulting narrative was impossible to resist he was the artist who had died for his art in May 1976 a little over a month after the discovery of the ocean wave the editors of Avalanche art magazine Liza Barron Willoughby sharp published a transcript of a phone interview with Anderson in the summer issue of 1976 in which they repeatedly probed the nature of Adar's intentions the final exchange which is also the most quoted part of the interview in capsule the reactions to his disappearance Mary Sue adder I heard a lot of his students were so incapable of living with the reality of it that they were fantasizing all kinds of situations will it be sharp escapes Liza bear starting another life somewhere else Mary Sue at her AAHA they had rumors going for months that he was alive and well will it be sharp there was no sense of him wanting that kind of thing or thinking Mary Sue at her own Oh will it be sharp this was the ultimate peace and her committing suicide Mary Sue at her no I'm absolutely convinced that was nowhere in his consciousness we talked about it and he assured me repeatedly these were not his intentions such mysterious circumstances of course bred suspicions maybe adder hadn't drowned but survived and began a new life for himself with an alternate identity maybe he committed suicide number four this case involves four credible witnesses in 1976 four buddies Chuck rack charlie folds and Jack and Jim whiner decided to take a camping trip all the men were students majoring in art they left on August 20th a Friday evening and Rove out of Boston to a remote area a lake on the allagash waterway when they arrived at the lake they set up camp on the lakes beach they built a large bonfire which they knew from experience would last about between four and five hours then they hopped into the two canoes they had brought and headed out to do some night fishing it was pitch black out on the lake and they planned on using the bonefire as a beacon to find their way back to the campsite shortly after moving to the center of the lake chuck got a strange feeling as if someone were looking at him turning around he saw a huge ball of light hovering about 200 feet above a distant section of the lake chuck pointed at the object and said hey look the others turned to see a bright perfectly round sphere of light pulsating and changing colors Charlie grabbed a flashlight and blinked it on and off at the object the sphere which had begun to slowly rise up immediately stopped then it slowly headed towards Charlie and his buddies growing in size as it approached the guys panicked and began rowing for their lives not knowing what this strange glowing thing was as they furiously paddled a hollow cone of pale blue light shot out of the sphere and began advancing on the water towards their canoes at that point they all blanked out the next thing they remembered was being back on the beach and getting out of their canoes the object was still hovering overhead standing there dazed they looked at the object for two or three minutes before it shot off at super speed straight up into the night sky and disappeared all four men felt strange and disoriented despite the appearance and disappearance of a very strange object none of them felt like talking about it they did however notice that their bone fire had burned down completely leaving only a few hot embers to their knowledge they had only been gone for about thirty minutes the fire should have lasted at least four hours this later turned out to be a classic case of missing time several years later Jim Winer suffered a head injury the injury caused a form of epilepsy known as temporal limbic epilepsy as part of his treatment he was asked if he was having any strange experiences Jim then stated that he was having very strange and lifelike dreams he also frequently awoke to find strange creatures in his room at the foot of his bed Jim's doctor referred him to Raymond Fowler a serious you for researcher Fowler had Jim hypnotically regressed and the whole story about his camping trip to the allagash waterway came out Jim and his three buddies had been picked up on the lake by the beam of light that had followed them they were all taken aboard a spacecraft they were examined and had samples of blood semen and urine taken skin hair and nails samples were taken as well all four witnesses to the allagash incident confirmed the experience of the others all their descriptions matched all the men were artists and were able to provide detailed drawings of what they had seen the drawings included the alien beings the surroundings and the instrumentation used for their examinations the aliens were particularly interested in Jim and his twin brother Jack it turns out that these twins had been abducted almost since birth years later in may 1988 Jack was abducted again along with his wife Mary Jack recalls that they were literally floated out of the house and across the lawn to a waiting craft shortly after Jack and his wife were abducted Jack found a strange lump on his leg that seemed to appear out of nowhere overnight Jack's family physician was concerned that the lump might be cancerous and arranged to have a surgeon remove it when the surgeon went in he found a small strange-looking object since he didn't know what it was and had never seen anything like it the surgeon sent it to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta later in trying to find out what happened to the removed object Jack discovered it was sent to a military pathologist in Washington DC from Mary United States Air Force colonel took control of it and it was never seen again when Jack went to ask the surgeon more about the object the surgeon stonewalled him and refused to talk about it even though Jack had been his patient number five between 2002 and 2005 a serial killer who became known as the West Mesa Bone Collector murdered and buried eleven women in the outskirts of Albuquerque New Mexico to this day law enforcement officials have been unable to discover the true identity of the murderer despite the fact that they have a list of potential suspects two of whom are already dead the stuff of a mystery television show The Bone Collector saga will leave you with goosebumps all of the West Mesa bone collectors victims fall between the ages of 15 and 30 to fit a specific profile were suspected to be involved in the Albuquerque drug scene and worked as prostitutes like many other infamous unsolved murders the true identity of the West Mesa Bone Collector remains a mystery due to a lack of new evidence and it's likely that these crimes will remain unsolved until someone comes forward until then this is everything we know about the West Mesa Bone Collector when a collection of bodies was discovered in the desert outside of Albuquerque New Mexico it wasn't just a number of bodies that were found that stunned investigators but the way in which they were buried the bodies of 11 women and one unborn child were found not in a single mass grave but rather they were found scattered across a desolate empty plot of land because of this it took law enforcement officials quite some time to recover all of the bodies then they started the arduous process of identifying each of them quickly coming to realize that many of them had been missing for years by the end of their investigation the bodies of 11 women had been identified Jaime Barela Monica Candelaria Victoria Chavez Virginia cloven Selenia Edwards cinnamon Elks Doreen Marquez Julie Nieto Veronica Romero Evelyn Salazar and Michelle Valdes one suspect lorenzo Montoya died in 2006 at which point the murders mysteriously stopped Lorenzo Montoya had a rather suspicious criminal background he not only lived near the burial site but he was arrested in 1999 for attempting to strangle a prostitute that he picked up and taken to a secluded area in 2006 Montoya died after the boyfriend of sherek Hill another prostitute murdered him Montoya had hired Hill and then tied her up and strangled her but when she didn't emerge from Montoya's home at the time she said she would her boyfriend whom she'd brought with her approached the house and killed Montoya in self-defense suspiciously the West Mesa murders stopped after Montoya was killed leading the authorities to conclude that he may have been the killer police believed that the killer might also be responsible for the disappearance of six other women when law enforcement officials began searching for other bodies strewn across the plot of land in West Mesa they had compiled a list of 20 potential victims all of those women had been missing for some time and they all shared characteristics with the known victims of that list eleven were found buried in the serial killers dumping ground and three others were luckily found still alive however the remaining six all of whom remain unnamed even though their pictures are available are still missing and might have fallen prey to the murderer as well the West Mesa burial ground was first discovered in February 2009 by a woman who lived in the area allegedly she had been out walking her dog in this particular 92 acre deserted scrubland known as West Mesa a section of Albuquerque New Mexico when she came across a bone sticking out of the ground and promptly called the police after studying satellite imagery of the area where the bones were uncovered law enforcement officials were able to pinpoint the approximate years that the ground had been disturbed in the area they were even able to identify tire tracks leading up to and around some of the burial sites that appeared between the years 2003 and 2005 those photos also showed evidence of soil movement most likely from when the graves were dug in 2010 George Walker a private investigator in the Albuquerque area began receiving messages from someone who claimed to know the identity of the West Mesa Bone Collector in fact the emails and phone messages are suspected to even be from the killer himself however law enforcement still hasn't determined who has been leaving the messages and they aren't sure if that person even knows anything reliable as none of the information provided has been verified Fred Reynolds who died in early 2009 of natural causes left quite a mystery behind Reynolds was a former heroin addict who was supposedly looking for several missing women before he passed away one of whom was Doreen Marquez whose body was found buried in West Mesa according to Laurie Gallegos a friend of Marquez Reynolds might have been operating an escort service that employed many of the victims the real question here is why did he have pictures of Marquez and the other missing women before the body dump was even found did he know something that the police didn't or was he actually the killer number six much like the murder case of Lisa Voe Stephen mccarran's death is also a murky subject it all began on what was supposed to be one of the best days of Stevens pretty short life the five year old from Hamilton Scotland was on holiday with his aunt and uncle Lynn Annie and Sneden they were visiting Butlins Air which was known to be a quaint little spot for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle they were living at a holiday camp together and the incident occurred only hours after Stevens arrival the camp had everything a little boy could ask for arcade games boat lake a pool tennis courts theaters the works unfortunately Stevens holiday turned into what would later be the most well-known missing child hunt by Scottish police on September 17 1988 Steven spent a couple of hours at the park moving from game to game it was a warm sunny day and Stephen had been looking forward to it for weeks for a brief moment when Stephen was playing on an escalator his aunt and uncle lost sight of him both of them thought that the other was watching Stephen and within those few seconds Stephen disappeared at first it was not a cause for alarm since the park was extremely crowded Lyn and Ian spent about 40 minutes searching the entire park shouting Stephens name this was when things started to take a sinister turn something was not right they notified Park security who in turn notified the police what followed is today known as the most extreme search for a missing child in Scotland about 200 people scanned the premises for Stephen his description was widely circulated and divers were made to search for him in nearby rivers it got to the point where they even sent for a helicopter that had the equipment to detect a body but to no avail the search went on for ages and they covered a six mile radius around the park at this point everyone started to believe there was only one answer Stephen had been abducted as time went on people started to speak up quite a few people who were at the park mentioned seeing Stephen walking alongside a middle-aged man and even sitting at a cafe with him this led to the majority of people thinking that he was abducted but this theory was soon put to bed after a witness claimed that they said him climbing over the perimeter fence other witnesses claimed they saw a young boy that resembled Stephen walking along the air turned he wrote about a half-hour after Ian and Lin had seen Stephen last this gave people a glimmer of hope that they could try to find him if he had not been forcefully taken while this was true the surrounding area was marshy and the temperatures dropped during the night after a couple of days went by spirits were at an all-time low and the police were asking around for leads everyone was expecting the worst and their fears soon became a reality 16 days later Stephens dead body was found by a lady who was walking her dog after the autopsy it was concluded that Stephen died due to exposure to cold temperatures and rugged terrain this was not a good enough answer for Stephens family there were still too many questions his socks had been taken off and put into his pockets which was odd since Stephen did not know how to tie his shoes even his jacket was nowhere to be found and there was no reason for him to take it off in such cold temperatures the jacket was also never found it was also highly improbable that such a young boy could have walked six miles away from the large camp the area he was found at had already been searched and there is no answer as to why he was not found during that time the police however were hell-bent on sticking to the idea that Stephen ran away and died due to natural causes even though the police insisted that Stephen died due to natural causes his family refused to ignore the clues that they say are pretty obvious many people believe that Stephen was kidnapped and then left near the ditch where he was found or even killed before he was placed there but then again why would a kidnapper take Stephen six miles away from the campsite only to take off his shoes and jacket and how did no one see Stephen walking those six whole miles he was only five years old after all an inquiry in March 1989 maintained what police were saying earlier on police still stuck by the conclusion that Stephen had simply run away and died of natural causes the case may be officially closed but a lot of people including Stephens family do not accept the conclusion there are too many unanswered questions and too much that does not make sense Gerry Gallagher one of the detectives that worked on the case even described it as the only case that still haunts him with regrets unfortunately the case is less than likely to ever be reopened so most of these questions will never find any answers number seven in the early evening of 4 July 1928 a fabulously wealthy businessman named Alfred Lowenstein boarded his private plane at Croydon Airport it was a routine flight that would take him across the English and French coast lines before landing at Brussels where Lowenstein lived with his wife Madeleine but he also had many enemies in 1926 he established international holdings and investments limited that raised huge amounts of capital from wealthy investors by 1928 these investors wanted some return on their money Lowenstein was pleased to be flying home on that July day in 1928 it was a fine evening for flying with scarcely a cloud in the sky the pilot Donald drew was able to assure him that it would be a smooth flight it was to prove smooth for everyone except Alfred Lowenstein himself he was to vanish in mid-flight and midair one of the strangest disappearing acts in history some eighty-five years after Lowenstein's disappearance the jury is still undecided there were a total of six people on that ill-fated flight in addition to Lowenstein himself the pilot Donald drew stood by the doorway of the plane as the passengers boarded he was joined in the cockpit by Robert little the mechanic the cockpit was a sealed unit with no connecting door to the rest of the plane once the Fokker had taken off drew and little had no access to the cabin the other people on board included Fred Baxter Lowenstein's loyal valet who accompanied him everywhere and Arthur Hodgson his male secretary there were also two women Eileen Clark and Paula Biddle on his stenographers shortly after 6:00 p.m. the fokker f.vii a small monoplane set off down the grass runway within minutes the plane was airborne and climbing to its cruising altitude of 4,000 feet before long everyone on board could see the Kent coast line below a minut or so later they were flying over the English Channel at the rear of the fogers cabin there was a windowless door that led into a small toilet this room also had an exterior door the only means of entrance and exit to the plane the door was clearly marked exit and was equipped with a spring-loaded latch controlled from inside that took two strong men to open in midair due to the slipstream pressing against it Lowenstein spent the first half of the flight making notes then as the plane headed out over the channel he went to the toilet compartment at the rear according to statements later made by Baxter his valet ten minutes passed and he had still not returned to his seat Baxter grew concerned and knocked on the toilet door there was no answer worried that Lowenstein might have been taken ill he forced open the door the toilet was empty Alfred Lowenstein had disappeared into thin air an obvious course of action would have been for the plane to divert to Sainte angle over dere strip which lay between Calais and Dunkirk here they could alert the Coast Guard to Lowenstein's disappearance instead the pilot landed on what he believed to be a deserted Beach near Dunkirk in actual fact the beach was being used by a local army unit when they saw the plane landing they rushed to meet it it nevertheless took them six crucial minutes to arrive at the stationary plane by that time both passengers and crew were standing on the sand they were questioned by Lieutenant Mark Wales pilot Donald Drewe behaved strangely evading his questions for half an hour until admitting that they'd lost Alfred Lowenstein's somewhere over the English Channel next to question the pilot was a professional detective Inspector bonnet he was puzzled by what he was told a most unusual and mysterious case he said we have not yet made up our minds to any definite theory but anything is possible he arrested no one and even allowed the plane to continue its flight to Saint Englert and thence back to Croydon the ensuing investigation was bungled from the outset Lowenstein's body was finally retrieved near Boulogne on 19 July more than two weeks after his disappearance it was taken to Calais by fishing boat where his identity was confirmed by means of his wristwatch an autopsy revealed he had a partial fracture of his skull and several broken bones forensic scientists concluded that he had been alive when he hit the water the mystery of how he fell to his death remained unanswered though there were many theories some said the absent-minded Lowenstein had accidentally opened the wrong door and fallen to his death this was most unlikely given that it was virtually impossible to open the cabin door in mid-flight others said he'd committed suicide perhaps because his corrupt business practices were about to be exposed [Music]
