the world feels like it is a little bit unstable now and there's one thing that every good country girl should do when she starts feeling like the world's gone a little wonky and that's to take stock of her food supply that way she has the peace of knowing that no matter what goes on in the world at least she can feed her family a great [Music] dinner before we can talk about what to stock in your pantry and on your homestead we need to talk about how to store what you're going to stock so i wanted to give you my top three tips on filling your pantry the first one is only store what you're going to actually eat now i know this sounds kind of silly and really obvious but it's really easy to end up at the grocery store and get tempted by those really big cans of lima beans that you're never going to eat but they look like a great item at a good price to put on your shelf don't do it only store what you and your family are actually going to eat tip number two is to always stay ahead of what you need always have extra on hand more than what you need for a month that way you're building up your food supply and creating even more backup food for in case you need it later and tip number three is to make sure you always think about how you're going to store what you buy before you buy it different types of foods really need to be stored in special ways and you need to know that before you purchase those foods if you're not sure how to do that check out this video that i have on bulk buying tips and how to store what you buy the first thing that i make sure that i always keep on hand in my household is grains and legumes now i like to buy these bulk so that i have large amounts of them because they store really well i always make sure that i have bulk wheat on hand we can either cook that just the way it is or we can grind it into flour we make sure that we have oats so that we can flake them or roll them and make them into oatmeal and all sorts of other goodies i keep rice on hand and beans on hand these are always great things to have on hand because you can make full meals out of them you can make a lot of great foods you can make a lot of other things with them and they're going to keep you full and happy if you need food now the second thing i like to keep on hand is really important to me because it's something that often runs out really quickly if something is going to run out in the grocery store and that's your fats and your oils i keep on hand butter i usually keep that in the freezer lard some good quality home rendered lard and i like to keep olive oil on hand i also keep coconut oil for some sorts of cookings if you use any other sort of oil it's really good to just make sure that you have several months of that on hand i usually buy mine bulk and keep it by the gallon in the pantry now the third type of food i always keep on hand kind of goes along with the oils in fats because you store them much the same and that is your sweeteners again these are the things that disappear really really quickly when things happen and you can't get to the grocery store they disappear on your own home shelf they can also disappear on the grocery store shelf really quickly and that is again the sweeteners things like honey molasses and of course sugar if you eat any alternate sugars or non sugars like monk fruit or stevia those are really good things to make sure that you always have them on hand and you always have some backups stocked number four are your baking and your pantry staples this is things like vinegar that you would use to make salad dressing and things like baking soda baking powder of course always salt things like that so that you can continue baking foods for your family if you need to now obviously you don't need sweet baked foods in order to survive but it's important to remember that when the world gets stressful a lot of times people need a little bit of that extra comfort food and a plate full of cookies is going to go a long way to comfort the people in your family if they're feeling stressed now the next thing that i always make sure i have plenty of in the household is meat and different proteins now usually these are in the freezer but i also keep some canned on the shelf you know this last year we saw meat disappear from the shelf at the grocery store at an alarming rate and a lot of people had to scramble in order to get their protein supplies so making sure that you always have more than you need for just the current time is a great way to ensure that you'll be able to feed your family great food regardless of what happens this coming year eggs are another really good source of protein that can be stored in your home to make sure that you have enough for when you need it now the next thing i always make sure that i have and this is number six on the types of food that i keep in my household all the time that is fruits and veggies now fresh fruits and veggies are amazing and of course they're the healthiest and the best way to go but sometimes you're not going to have access to those so unless you can garden year round you really want to make sure you store some fruits and veggies too things like canned vegetables or canned fruits frozen fruits or vegetables freeze dried or dehydrated are all great ways to go to make sure that you have some options for getting those vegetables and those fruits into your diet even if you have to stay home for a while and not make it out shopping now the last one is one that a lot of people don't think of but that is convenience foods when life gets stressful a lot of times you need a break on cooking you certainly don't need to be trying to cook foreign foods or strange foods that take a long time even if what you're facing is just a personal disaster you need a break and you need a shortcut so make sure that you keep convenience foods on hands now you can can a lot of great convenience foods you can also freeze some freezer meals and make sure they're on hand or you can buy things and keep them on your pantry shelf things like cans of beans even you know the family favorite macaroni and cheese is a great backup for those emergency days where you just need a break because things get stressful hey and i wanted to add one bonus item and that's comfort foods things that are going to make you feel good in the moment that you need it a lot of times for us ladies that means make sure you have a little extra chocolate on hand hey if you want to learn how to step by step build up your pantry check
