debate has been brewing among you is the seven mag better or is the thirty odd six better seven rim mag has won cartridge wars voted by you guys in the series that we have done but the number one comment i've seen seen since then is people who are salty that the 30 odd 6 did not win today we end the debate once and for all today's video is brought to you by the lovely decor in my office skull bliss has some great sales going on that i'll tell you about later [Music] so point number one goes to the seven mag it has a bigger case capacity of 82 grains compared to 68 in the 30 out 6. that allows you to stack more powder in there now when you look at the two cartridges you say how does it have more capacity because it's almost an identical cartridge length however the seven mag is just a fatter case the parent case of the seven mag is the 375 h it's just a fatter column of powder but even though the seven mag can put more powder in there the thirty out six can shoot heavier bullets that's really the cool thing about the 30 out 6 is you can load this with such a wide variety of bullets i mean the 30 out six you can put a tiny little 110 grain bullet in there if you want to just shoot it really fast and you're on an antelope hunt or something like that or you can load this heavy with a 220 grain bullet and take it to hunt eland or something like that that is an incredibly versatile cartridge now the 7mag you can also load quite a bit different but it's really going to go from 120 to 185 grains you just won't see quite the broad range of bullets in general that you do from the 30 out 6 at least not in the factory loads another point goes to the 7 mag for energy let's go to the laptop here and look at some numbers i knew i was going to get chewed up in comments no matter what i do about the ballistics because it really just depends how you load each one of these cartridges so to try to make it a fair comparison between them i picked hornady precision hunter federal power shock ammo and nosler trophy grade ammo and i just saw what loadings they chose for both cartridges using the same bullet so in nosler's ammo we see the seven mag barely eeks out the thirty out six at the muzzle but as you go out to distance you see the seven mag really retains a lot more of that energy that's because of the bc that sleekness of that bullet that we're going to talk about in a little bit but the interesting thing is with all of these loads including i think the most interesting one is this federal power shock for both it's not a real hot load it's a little bit mild but the bullet weights are really really really really similar here and so i think it's a decent comparison between those two and even so the seven mag just has more energy at every single distance there but these numbers are so close i think if you shot a thousand animals in the same spot with a 30 out 6 and then a 7 mag you would have the exact same number of those animals dead i mean those numbers are so close the thirty odd six has a little bit of a wider frontal diameter for killing the seven mag is a little bit faster for killing then let's take a look at wind deflection where you see the 7 mag does have a measurable impact and that's because generally the 7 mag is going to have higher bc bullets that's a big deal if you're trying to use a gun to shoot longer range not necessarily at game but even just if you want to take that same rifle out and just go shoot some steel on a saturday you do have an edge in wind deflection on the 7 mag then we look at the trajectory of these bullets and we see the seven mag just does not drop as much as the 30 out six and so we have to offer another point there so really as we look at just those raw ballistics the seven mag just wins every time but just barely it's because it's shooting about 150 feet per second faster next category we look at recoil because we say okay if the seven mag's shooting faster we have to have a punishment on the other side with recoil i think to be fair we have to call this one a tie between the 7 mag and the 30.6 because as we look at the recoil numbers it really depends on which load we're talking about in general i would put the 30 out 6 like a quarter of a pound more recoil than the 30 than the 7 mag but it's so close that i think if you were to shoot one gun and then the next there's no way you could tell which was the 7 mag and which was the thirty odd six and so for that reason i'm gonna call recoil a tie today's video is brought to you by skull bliss skull bliss offers really cool home decor carved from actual animals goals that are ethically sourced so you can check out their website they have ram skull cowskull buffalo skulls longhorn skulls and a variety of different finishes you can pick i got one that's hand carved and it looks really cool i love having it in the background of my videos they also have cool finishes that are metallic non-carved or even a mosaic they're running some big sales right now on the website so check it out at skullbliss.com i have a special link in the description plus there's a code backfire 50 that'll give you 50 off until august 1st so check it out at skullbliss.com artisans are making some great stuff but there's a very important category that we have neglected until now and this one definitely goes to the 30.6 and that is the cost of ammunition on average right now a box of 30.6 is 47 dollars and for the 7 mag it's about 57 and so the 30 odd 6 is cheaper to shoot for factory ammo but this is the thing that's driving me crazy i need to call up a couple ammo manufacturers and kind of weasel my way in and find some answers on some of these i don't understand the pricing of ammunition because if you're a reloader and you're either reloading 7 mag or 30.6 the difference in components between them is about 9 cents per shot you're just putting a little bit more powder in there and that's really the difference you know you got to get the brass there's a tiny tiny bit more uh material in the seven mag in that brass the bullet though in the 30 out six is a little bit heavier like the actual components i do not understand why the seven mag costs about nine dollars more to shoot per box from factory ammunition because for reloaders i mean we're talking about a dime is it the difference and so for a box we should be talking about one to two dollars max maximum in actual materials they're both extremely popular cartridges though of course the 306 is more popular i just don't understand where we get these big price differences in cartridges sometimes when the difference in components is nearly nothing i understand it if we're talking about a very niche cartridge that there's just less supply of but the 7mag i mean it's everywhere and so that's one thing that just baffles me we also have to give a point to the 30 odd 6 for working better in a shorter barrel more powder means it takes longer to burn that powder and so a 7 mag really using the formula that i kind of make for finding the right length of barrels the 7 mag is would be 25.25 inches and the 30 out 6 can go down to 23.5 inches and so in general having a two inch shorter barrel to me is a big advantage since i shoot suppressed in fact that's maybe my biggest knock on the seven mag right now is ah man now that we're in the age of everybody using some kind of muzzle device i don't want those long barrels and so that hurts the seven mag for me we also have to give a point on reloading to the thirty odd six not only are 30 out 6 components even more available than 7 mag but also the 30 out 6 is probably a little bit better of a case to be working with the issue there is the belt on the 7 mag now i've shot a ton of 7 mag i haven't done a lot of reloading with 7 mag though i've done some but not a lot but the thing that i hear complaints from in reloaders is that belt there causing little bits of bulging in the case since it's not totally uniform on the sidewall some people tell me it's not a big deal at all other people who reloaded a lot say it does cause issues and you kind of some people are using kind of specialty dies to kind of hold that that head in there as they're as they're pressing it there are just some extra little steps you gotta do with the seven mag and so i think everybody would probably agree the thirty out six is a little bit better of a case to be reloading but i don't know how big of a deal it really is so now we ended with an equal number of points i gained a new appreciation for the 30.6 as i really spent this week diving into the history and all the nitty gritty details about it but i think for me i probably still give a tiny edge to the 7 mag just because i feel like that 284 diameter just the bcs of the bullets you can get ah to me it's a big advantage i love all the ballistic advantages of a little bit flatter trajectory less wind drift all those kind of things because every gun i shoot yes i'm going to take it out and hunt with it but i'm also just going to go out and just shoot steel and just enjoy shooting it out in the desert and so for me that's a big advantage what is it for you which do you prefer 30 out 6 or 7 mag
