Hi friends! Today I'm going to show you how I plan, shoot and edit my vlogs. Let's do it :) Anything for the shot ;) Currently I film my vlogs with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro. For audio I use various audio recorders, for instance a Rode Wireless Go II in this video. I always film in 6K resolution and export in 4K. This camera offers the best of both worlds, high image quality of a cinema camera, while being compact and easy to operate for one person. Sometimes I do it all by myself. Sometimes it was filmed by T. Getting everything right in camera is important! But to be honest, the gears don't matter that much. The best equipment is the one that we have. What really matters is the story we want to tell, the emotions we try to convey. Two crucial things: the sound quality, and understanding light for correct exposure, I'm a fan of natural light, but in winter, you can't rely on natural light alone. Watching films, looking at classic paintings and analysing them really helps you seeing light differently. T is back from running errands. So now he's going to help me with the filming. It's simple, it's fast and it's perfect for chilly mornings. Documenting and sharing my life is what I do for work now. I personally don't find the technical stuffs hard. What's truly tricky sometimes is finding balance between being in the moment or behind the lens. The honest answer is that I still don't know. I'm still learning. Still struggling. And at the same time, growing. It's a perpetual predicament, and maybe someday I will find the correct answer for myself. For now I just want to enjoy my soul-warming wonton soup ;) Then I will walk you through my thought process of creating a vlog, and the editing as well! Yum, this is so good! A video done right can go further than just telling the story visually. It can make convey emotions, evoke memories and feelings. The concept of each video is important the way I tell it, the way that I pace a story, the way that I choose to represent it through very particular images that is a lot about my personality. That's why I always write the story when vlogging. Making a shotlist. It helps to visualize what I'm going to do. It gives structure to my thought process and don't let me distracted. It helps creating coherent arrangement of images for later. Introduction orients the viewers to the central idea. Transitions guide us through the sea of images. And conclusion leaves us with a sense of completion. "For me, it's so beautiful to think about these pictures and sounds flowing together in time and in sequence, making something that can be done only through motion pictures." By the time I start filming, I already know how the vlog will look like. Music is something incredibly important in my videos. I curated and saved my choices of music for later use. Whenever I need a song, I just need to browse my private collection. There are a lot of websites to license music legally: musicbed, artlist, songfreedom, epidemic sound... You can also curate your music while doing other tasks! Time to secure the footages I shot. Anyone who works in videography knows that organization is key. When you’re dealing with thousands of files, you need a system in place. After filming, give your files clear names, delete bad footages, number your hard drives, back up your datas... And so on. I edit my videos with DaVinci Resolve Studio 17. I work on 4K resolution and 23.98 fps for highest quality possible. But in the end, it doesn't matter! As long as it's a good story, even low resolution footages from mobile phone is good enough :) Importing my footages into the video editor. Choosing the music first. Music will dictate everything. The mood, the story pace, the narration. Here I just want to use the first 50 seconds of this song. Dupplicate it to cover enough the length of footages I will use. Now let's find the second song. Make the volume level of different parts of the song consistent. Go back to old projects to copy my logo, intro, outtro... so I don't have to create them again from scratch. Streamline the workflow to increase the efficiency. Now let's start adding footages. Since I already planned everything, have everything I need, and know which footages will go where, the editing is super fast and easy. Don't forget to save your project regularly. I let the flow of the video take control of itself. It will evolve out of the original idea in my mind. Sometimes your idea works. Sometimes it doesn't. I just have to find a workaround. Have a detailed plan by all means, but also leave room for improvement & improvisation. Speed it up to make a timelapse sequence. After that I will move to color grading. I already have my color grading set up and saved for different situations. For each clip, I just have to find the correct one and apply it. It saves me a whole lot of time. Of course I still have to do minor corrections for each and every clip. Repeat the same process for the whole video. Correcting the basic settings such as: exposure, contrast, white balance, saturation... For vlogging work, I just want to keep things as simple as possible. Finishing up the narration / subtitles. That's it for today ;) Thank you so much for watching :) Let me know in the comment if you have any questions.
