you go into saying that you can't find wrx's for under five grand hold your horses because we're talking about reliability so let's talk about the wrx's more relaxed and reliable little brother the impreza you see i think the impreza which is short for impressive is quite the vehicle for under 5k if you want all-wheel drive because it's still powered by an ej25 the same block as the sti so what's different well for starters it's not turbocharged and they have different heads but hey the impreza still puts down the power to all four wheels and it comes standard with a manual transmission so you can shift your own gears i mean yeah it has the fun pedal and the impreza really separates itself from the pack as one of the only all-wheel drives in its class which does lower the fuel economy to 20 in the city and 27 on the highway but you're not buying this thing for prius like fuel economy are you and this thing was put on a jenny craig diet because it only weighs about 3 000 toyota highlander and the highlander is toyota's flagship midsize suv taking their stellar reputation of reliability and economy and molding it into an suv and man did they knock this thing out of the park not only is it common to see these things sitting at 200 250 or even 300 000 miles some of them look brand new after all that use that's way better than the old porsche roof and if you want to to go with the highlander because it has seven spacious seats and if you option it with the limited trim you're tacking on a navigation system and leather seats so how much do you think all this costs well you'll be knocking on five grands door if you get this fully loaded hybrid all-wheel drive with just a tick over a hundred thousand miles all i can say is wow but wait hold up i almost forgot to mention that the hybrid highlander comes with 268 horsepower yes 268 horsepower that's like almost as much as this thing but i know that a highlander isn't gonna tickle all of your fancies or however you say that so we got another super reliable all-wheel drive suv up for ya i bet you've seen one two or probably a million of these waiting in line to pick up their kids from school or scouring your mall parking lots and that's exactly the idea that honda was going for but did you also know that they offered all their crvs with all-wheel drive yeah that's right the crvs have actually proven to be pretty capable off-road as well ensuring that your mom won't get stuck during her midlife crisis mudding extravaganza and it's also one of the more reliable cars on this planet with many of them lasting over 300 thousand miles and gas mileage well i didn't think you'd ask 27 miles per gallon on the highway which is fantastic for an suv but as far as performance goes there's a lot left to be desired i mean they will hit 60 but you may read a novel before then and they're not exactly the prettiest vehicle out there but it definitely gets the job done well it's like the vanilla of the most vanilla flavors that you can get but if what you're looking for is reliability at a solid price and something that will always get you to starbucks and back well hey you can get a crv like this one for 4 500 bucks with just over 100 000 miles on it so what happens when subaru takes a stab at the honda crv well you get the subaru forester which in all honesty my little sister just bought one and i'm a huge fan of except it costs a little bit more than five thousand bucks but the one that you can get for five grand is pretty cool too because some say it's a car and some say it's an suv but no one really knows what it is it's just provocative i don't even know what that means no one knows what it means but it's provocative no it's not it's getting people going and the subaru forester is damn good for a lot of things like hauling you and your family up to the mountains for a ski weekend or driving down a dirt path to find your favorite camping spot heck it even does a good job just sitting in the line at mcdonald's it is literally the jack of all trades complete with 165 horsepower from a naturally aspirated forebanger or if you're willing to shell out the doe for a 2004 or later model you can get that thing turbo charged and when something has a turb ski that means that it can be sporty too and heck this thing is essentially a lifted hot hatch and it's got my heart beaten and while it returns over 27 miles to the gallon on the highway it might be the full meal deal if you're looking for something that's fun and reliable for under 5k because after all it's japanese it's a subaru and parts are plenty available and heck check out this one that's just starting to stretch its legs at 80 000 miles and it could be yours for under 5k so what did we learn well the subaru forester is the perfect companion if you're sporty and adventurous that sounds like a lot of fun but what if you want to live that lifestyle and share it with your whole family yes like all of them well you're gonna need a vehicle with three rows and v-tech right so the next vehicle on our list is the honda pilot and this thing is even bigger than the crv and it has a ton of room for activities and it's not even slow in fact it's faster than a porsche well like a porsche cayenne and a really old one at that but still a porsche all while moving eight passengers to and from soccer practice with ease and did i mention v-tech yes thanks to some fancy engineering gizmos the pilot will still return over 20 miles per gallon and since honda made the pilot with simplicity in mind these lanyards last a very long time so throw that soccer mom stigma out the window because you should pick one up and you can get one like this with 86 000 miles on it for less than 4 500 bucks and i would call that an ideal deal but what if you just have to have a manual then it's probably best to go with the impreza but if you need a little bit more practicality then i'd check out the subaru outback yes the outback is essentially a lifted wagon and i'm telling you what's not to love about that the outback has the usability of a car the practicality of an suv and the ruggedness of a truck and considering that it's powered by a boxer four-cylinder putting down 250 horsepower it's got performance rivaling the wrx since it's a subaru you know it's capable off-road and for hundreds of thousands of miles as well but all that reliability and off-road prowess won't come cheap the outback starts new at roughly 30 000 but thanks to our good old friend appreciation you can pick up the older model for right around you guessed it five grand i mean what is not to love if i'm on a budget for five grand and i want to be able to go skiing in the winter and have a reliable and practical car year-round what's my pick well i'm gonna have to go with the highlander yes especially when you can get the hybrid with all-wheel drive for under 5k so let us know down below what would be your
