precious VI compact crossovers offer the set of capabilities and overall better value for muddy package than the Subaru Forester impressive cargo capacity and strong off-road performance are rarely associated with compacts but the Forester provides them in Spades arguably claiming the spot of a best small family SUV as its own yet like any other car out there the Forester 2o does it exactly shine all around so stay with us to find out about six reasons why the Subaru Forester may not be the best choice for you reason number six underpowered engine and droning CVT gearbox although combat crossovers aren't necessarily known as competent performers the Subaru Forester goes one step further or rather backward in this instance its 2.5 L flat 4 provides a correspondingly flat acceleration curve propelling the forer from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.5 seconds that's slower than most competitors but hardly surprising considering the reduced power as of this year the allnew 6 gen 2025 Subaru Foresters make 180 horsepower and 178 lbet of torque two horsepower less than their predecessors at least the two extra pound feet of torque offset the imbalance to some extent the CVT gearbox further compounds the issue by supplying a steady amount of droning at the higher end of the rev counter in a rather uncooperative demeer to boot for the most part however the gearbox will fade into the background and available paddle shifters will come in handy but every time that extra bit of pace becomes a necessity the forester's gearbox will kindly remind you of its faults in an unequivocal or rather vocal matter in this particular case at least the setup is rounded off with sub's trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive system that supplies the Forester with a more than welcome Edge in the off-roading Department the refresh powertrain tuning also supplies the peak torque at the lower end of the rev counter compared to before making the newest Foresters livelier in traffic however most buyers would surely agree that a more powerful engine would also be welcome and it's not like the company doesn't all already have a perfect candidate for the job either Subaru's 2.4 L turbocharged 4-cylinder is proving to be one of the best engineered recently introduced engines across the industry not to mention that it supplies its applications with as much as 260 horsepower significantly improving their performance in the process furthermore one of those applications is the forester's Outback sibling making us wonder where the compact hasn't been treated with similar gravity as its slightly larger counterpart the answer might lie in the allnew hybrid Forester scheduled to arrive at SU some point during the model year 2026 but for now the Forester is a one-way street so to speak until the more fuel efficient and hopefully more powerful Forester hybrid arrives those looking for more potent compact crossover would be better advised to look elsewhere reason number five ungainly design Subaru vehicles especially their crossovers aren't exactly known for their flashy design which would be fine if subies weren't polarizing it best at the same time as the company's volume model the Forester is a perfect example of their uninspiring design language generation in generation out the all new upcoming models may have addressed that issue to some extent but they still have plenty of work to do before capturing the gracious essence of Mazda and the robust nature of Toyotas in spite of marked improvement in several areas and despite channeling their inner R fors even the latest Foresters still lack the universal peal of their more illustrious competitors something that's especially true in the case of off-road focused Wilderness models which always had the displeasing task of balancing between the already awkward styling of the base models and the added clunkiness of the off-roading trims plastic clading and accompanying Aesthetics the interior meanwhile is functional at best although spacious and relatively well appointed the forester's cabin is still on the Spartan side especially nearer the entry level the cabin is also riddled with knobs and buttons although that too has been somewhat offset by the all new models and their larger vertically oriented touchscreen display however that also means that some physical controls are now being manifested in a digital form which traditionalists probably won't appreciate one bit reason number four fuel economy could be better until the mentioned allnew super re forcer hybrid arrives at some point during the second half of 2025 CD models will remain a second tier choice at best for those in need of an efficient vehicle sure enough the ebaa ratings of 26 MPG in the city 33 MPG on the highway and 29 MPG combined are fine enough for an all-wheel drive compact crossover the forester's hybrid competitors are much more efficient with 40 MP gallon combined the Toyota Round 4 Ford Escape and Honda CRV hybrids lead the pack by a country mile even their non-hybrid forms Faire better than the Forester although one shouldn't forget that Subaru's compact comes with an inherent fuel efficiency related disadvantage called all-wheel drive that even a CVT gearbox hasn't been able to offset reason number three lower than expected towing capacity for a high riding all-wheel drive exclusive crossover over the Forester should have done better in the towing capacity Department although at twice the capability of the pre- 2022 models which were only listed at 1,500 lb the newer Foresters are still left behind by class leading competitors like the Ford Escape or Toyota raav Force off-road oriented models TRD off-road and Adventure currently sitting at a 3,000lb capacity the Forester admittedly does better than before but still lags behind the mentioned Ford Escape and toyot R for trim levels by a full 500 lb throw in a much more expensive but similarly sized Jeep Cherokee into the mix and the compact crossover's maximum towing capacity will be stretched to 4,500 lb that's a sizable gap for any crossover to cover in knowing how Subaru isn't planning on introducing a more powerful conventional model but is instead working on hybrid it's unrealistic to expect the Subaru compact to compete for class leading towing capacity honors anytime soon reason number two completely outclassed by the Outback in short the Subaru Outback is is a larger more powerful and more capable crossover than its in-house Forester counterpart if you're asking yourself what the comparison between the two Subarus who don't even compete in the same class has to do with the Forester shortcomings the answer is simple while more capable across the board the Outback is only fractionally more expensive than the Forester making it a much more enticing Prospect for a number of reasons so enticing in fact that we'd argue it's the way to go and that most people shouldn't even consider buying the forer when they have the Outbacks added appeal to contemplate for starters the Outback provides even more impressive cargo capacity than its smaller sibling but that's understandable considering its size Advantage more bordly the Outback offers a choice between the same uninspiring power Trin that serves as the current Forester sole option and a more powerful turbocharged 4cylinder that would have been a great fit for the smaller crossover as well even the fuel economy ratings are the same despite the Outback's eight or so inches of extra length and 185 lbs of extra weight not to mention the Outback manages to replicate the 3,000 500 lb towing capacity of the forester's rivals the Forester has or rather will have one major advantage over its larger sibling further along the road which brings us back to the yet unreleased Forester hybrid once it finally arrives the hybrid will provide the Forester with a much needed fuel efficiency advantage over its Outback sibling but until then there's hardly a reason to overlook the ladder in the forester's favor reason number one pricing starting at mandatory destination fee the Subaru Forester is an enticing Prospect sure the entry level models are somewhat Barren in terms of our Advanced convenience and safety gear but they're around $1,400 cheaper than comparable RAV 4S plus they offer standard all-wheel drive on top of that the Ford Escape and Honda CRV both start from around $229,500 making them even less enticing prospects compared to sub's compact so why are we talking about the Foresters price in a negative light while it has to do with the previously discussed short shortcoming one glance at the new Subaru Outback's pricing will tell you that it starts from $8,885 some $1,800 more than the Forester and actually even less than the forester's main Rivals like the escape and CRV while the entry level Outback models won't provide any performance related Edge over the Forester counterparts they will provide a more spacious cabin and trunk at the very least meanwhile the range topping Subaru Forester requires at least $ 37,39 and at that point it makes sense to Shell out another $2,000 for the most affordable turbo powerered Outback Onyx edition even a trimtrim comparison creates a manageable gap of $5,000 which although might sound like much looks like more than it actually is at that level regardless of it shortcomings the Subaru Forster remains one of the go-to options in the world to combat crossovers yes it might be uninspiring in more ways than one especially the performance department but it's Hallmark of off-road incapability unparalleled practicality and overall more than solid bank for Buck make it a worthy candidate to even the pickiest buyers thanks for watching and we'll see you next time
