ask you geez do you pronounce it Adeline yes okay totally right whatever oh that gets it totally right okay now they're alive hi Menzies who are here with Adeline from sabbatical Beauty one of my personal favorite skincare shops she sells korean-inspired skincare totally like way beyond 60 years and I brought her here to spill her secrets talk about her past mistakes so that you don't make the same mistakes and also stuff that she sees you besties sometimes make that she's like oh that would be so easy to fix but they don't know how to fix that and then of course we're live so you guys can ask her questions as well so welcome Adeline thank you for joining us thank you so much Renee for having me super fun so tell everybody a little bit more about how you got started with sabbatical Beauty okay so um I was actually a professor before I quit my job to do this full-time and I started making skincare because I was really into Korean skincare it was like the only thing that would really help my skin I had really dry skin I didn't know how to do anything about it and went to a dermatologist dermatologist was like moisturizes rbs and nobody should buy them and they're going to causing your like acne and so right so I went basically for like four years not moisturizer and getting like ring clear and ring clear and then Korean Beauty started surfacing and I start trying it out I really liked it then I realized that you know I did more research into skincare that when a product says like you know the product is like honey this honey is really good for you if you actually look at ingredients in this honey is probably like 1% of the product and so I was like where can I find a product that actually like have the know in large quantities the ingredients that they say that they're supposed to have and I decided the only way to really be able to a test those product especially with Asian ingredients was to make them myself because I just couldn't find anywhere else so I I was on sabbatical I was supposed to write book I'm writing a book I started like playing with skincare in my in my kitchen I just I bought some and put it together now my friends saw the difference in my skin and they were like oh you gotta make that for us so I started making it for them and then they told me to set up a shop and then I set out a shop and then I got press coverage and then it kind of blew up and then what really sealed the deal for me was when I bought your Korres handmade hide on university I think it was 2016 and I bought your course because I had no idea how to run a business I had just like a product that worked and so I bought H to you and that kind of like set me on my course to I understand how marketing worked and that's how I grew to getting to be a six-figure business that would age to you was I instrumental to that super awesome I just I personally buy your products and I love like the sleeping pack ones but I do have kind of a funny story that I have an irrational fear of bees and I bought something in yours with honey in it and I can definitely vouch for the fact that when it says it has like that ingredient in it you're right it is the like hugest quantity like its weight wise the biggest ingredient and I put it all over my face and then I went to the park with my kids and bees were like I was like okay honey on days like winter and there were the other stuff in the summer when I go to the park with the kids because like I already have an irrational fear and they were like right near my eyes oh my gosh oh wow but I really I really do love your products personally so I so personally when I tried them I was like I can see why how she got to where she got and anybody going to your website can kind of see the same thing and I have a link to adilyn's website down below as well so tell me kind of what kind of mistakes you felt that you could have kind of overcome like you what would you wish what did what do you wish you knew when you started later you learn that he would have been like man that would have been a shortcut if I learned that a long time ago uh well I think what the biggest thing that I learn which you kind of get it at your training as well as that that aren't really shortcuts um when I night when I'm saying that there aren't really shortcuts what I mean is like you can't really expect to just like they're very very few people that just blow up and continue to stay blowing up and that's like what I realized because I I blew up and then I have a really hard time maintaining that in bringing new people into my business and and and you know in HT you you talk about how you need to continue know even if you launch at the very beginning and then nobody's listening you gotta keep launching and you got to keep doing that stuff because eventually you gather momentum and people will be interested in what you have to say and then they'll start following you and paying attention to you so that just takes a long time and I didn't realize that it took a long time you know I thought just like boom you get a press feature that's it but it doesn't work that way where's my worry I'm gonna click the button right exactly you have to create really like mission marketing machine which in htu is really the system of launching collections in order to gather that steam in order for people who are keep wanting to pay attention to you in order to not come across as salesy because you're not selling a product for the sake of selling a product you're really just like launching things because your business is fun and there's something exciting and people just want to keep coming to you and watching you just cause you're doing something exciting so I wish I had known how much work it was going to continue to be I didn't realize that I thought it was like whoa what done now I remember at one point you probably remember that I'm helping you remember this cuz we didn't talk about this before we went live but I remember at one point you asked me personally how do I because product lines you took my training at free handmade training comm where I teach you how to launch product lines and take them away and you experience like the hatred of people feeling that scarcity and they're like what am I supposed to do because this particular product from this particular line is my favorite and I will always want to use it forever right and you were like what do I do cuz they don't want me to take it away but you're telling me to take it away so what did you do to kind of fix that well okay so there are several things first of all customers may say that you don't want to take it away but then they won't buy it so but at the same time I kind of understood what your issues were with like you know stuff that went away that they felt it will only work with your skin at that point so what I've transitioned into doing is that I don't launch a whole collection of new products I transition into doing seasonal boxes which feature most core products and either one new product and one relaunch of an old product so like that if I get like a lot of people have you know cuz I have a back in stock request in my show if I get a lot back and start requests for product and I know maybe they might be actually summing to this product to bring back this whole product maybe and you need a new audience and so then I'll bring it back and revive it and see how people react to it and also when I when I know that a lot of people who are sad about product then I will say you know probably come back next season so just like stock up when you can so I just make things seasonal like I have some fall inspired serums I have a pumpkin spice latte Sarah and I have an apple cider Sarah and I really only like Starbucks I only put it out in November and then when my stock sells out it sells out because people may complain but like right now nobody is going to really buy a pumpkin spice latte Sarah they may say thank you buddy do you find it makes people buy more though before it before you take it away if you're like I have to take it away I find that they stock up a little more on it it depends some people do and that some people don't and then I mean to me it really shows you like whether they really they really do want to prod I don't know because they a few people will but a lot more people will complain about it and actually what stuff yeah you gotta eat so you would you you have to follow the dollar the dollar is the vote yes and I I agree that you have to take the things away because scarcity is important and also if I didn't take a product that out away I couldn't launch it and get so many people to buy it again yeah and and it's not like it's ever really a way if I'm going to bring it back again so I give people like you know I say if it's a lot is still a lot of requests for it where I go we can bring it back and I also offer that if you if you guys really really want product if you can get it like ten people to get it to buy a full so I come in to buy it full size well make one batch for you so we do it that way as well so it's kind of compromised I suppose it I think I think that yeah that's what I did I compromise but you say it sounds like you stay in touch with with your your what do you call them you're in it's not your insiders right my oh I call them sabbatical beauties sabbatical beauties that's right okay so it sounds like you stay in touch with them quite a bit and you can kind of tell the difference between whether it's just lip service or if they really do want it yeah we have a really really really committed vibrant Facebook group really great people in it and it can be very vocal about what he like how I know this is gonna be asked in the chat right now like how did you get people to join that insider's Facebook group okay so I started a group around a little bit around the time I joined htu I think and I do a lot of have a lot of invitations to join the group so once you're in my funnel you will get an invitation to join a group and some reasons about why it's so much fun to be in a group using screenshots or testimonials from people who are in the group and love it I also regularly like do things like I have currently for my seasonal boxes I have people who are dedicated reviewers of the Box they switch out yes skincare with what's in the box and everybody that's a different skin type and they kind of tell you how your skin is reacting week by week and so I put those videos up on the Facebook page and they say if you want to watch new reviews live and you want to talk to do reviewers like you should join our Facebook group because that's where all the action is that's where the action is yeah that's a great line for a message so you know so what would you say is probably the number one mistake that you commonly see other besties do that makes you cringe and how should they fix it I would say there are two things the first thing is like being really afraid of putting your prices up and I think I think it's a problem that a lot of women have because women don't value themselves and like like we're taught by conditioned in society like to think that you know what all work should be cheaper or should be not so expensive but I really think that the way you teach is completely correct that women should price your products and pricing and labor more highly so I whenever I see besties go like oh that's too expensive nobody would ever buy it I'm like no it my name is right you got to follow the basic things you got to have like good marketing good lighting good photographs good packaging a good unboxing experience and people will pay for that and people actually really really really want to pay for that not everybody is just concerned about getting the cheapest thing ever so I think sure that's a different market so that's just all about tapping into that market and I think a lot of people think that maybe that market is really small or doesn't exist but in reality that market is bigger than the cheaper market yes a cheaper market is harder to compete in and it in on many levels it's harder to compete in because more businesses are in that market it's also harder to compete in because it's you have to cheat price your products so cheaply it's almost impossible to compete against like the cheap mass manufacturers so it's nearly market more room people are more willing to pay and people are happier would you agree with that um I think that there's less nitpicking over little details with the higher price market and there's there's more well first of all I also wanted to say that you're like yeah there's no way in which you can compete with a company that selling the same thing as you do except it cost like two cents to be made in China and it's like absolutely no way you can do that and second of all like I agree it's kind of like the difference between an Amazon shopper and somebody who comes to mice like one reason why I'm not really interested in putting my stuff on Amazon handmade is simply because I feel like they're customers that go to Amazon to look for skin care will be a different customer than a customer and it goes to Sephora to look for skin care or even if it's the same person they'll have different expectations so it's like if you price your products cheaply the same person would have a different reaction to you versus if you price your products more expensively and they were proud if you price them more expensively you probably will get a better experience at a customer in general okay I love that um Irish is asking Irish Bella 78 is asking do you make everything from scratch yes that's so awesome and you Betty's go ahead now's the time to ask your questions all in the chat here super awesome so did you always price higher like that like right out the gate no when I first started I tried to price like a mid-range maybe something like L'Oreal price range like you know not cheapest of the cheap but not expensive either like I would sell my serums for $25 and then I realized after doing the math that I was losing money and it was really bad there was no way I could continue to grow my business doing this especially because when you are a small handmade you know business you you're not buying in huge quantities so you can't stay on economies of scale you're not you don't have machines to put things together for you I pay people to help make my product and I pay them well so I can't I kind of do it like super cheaply so I realized that I need it to go premium in order to survive and I mean I'm not even as expensive as some of the crazy stuff out there that's full of junk I once I YouTube like a review of a lotion that was a thousand dollars for a jar that was like this big yeah I'm just like wow I didn't even know that that was like out there yeah Gayla bed and gold and everything Wow I saw this when somebody sent me this ingredient this product I was five hundred dollars for an ounce it's a cream for five hundred dollars and asked me to look at the ingredient list and I was like the first ingredient is water meaning that it's probably 90% water and everything else is light below that and that's why you're maybe four you'll pay for it a fancy jar that's true incidentally I'm actually running a webinar series on how to read an ingredients list for a product it's a free webinar series that's going to be starting next week and all and I will basically like walk people who attend the webinar over to like what to look out for and what to not want to like not want in your products and again oh what's the link for that I'll make sure I post it it's um it's a free webinar and basically it gives you like everything all the cheats you know you might need to go to the drug store or go to the cosmetic counter and then you basically like have all the information so it's like yeah thank you so if you buy an expensive product you know you're actually paying like what you're you know you you're actually getting your money's worth okay and for everybody watching adilyn just gave me the link but it's super long so stay to the end and then refresh in two minutes and I'll have the link in the in the description or you could also go find sabbatical Beauty on Facebook and join her group and I bet that it's in there as well cinder set sand is asking how was it finding suppliers for your containers was it difficult easy how many hours did you spend on it um I shopped around a bit for containers and I can't say that it was easy to find them because I had to I went to various different suppliers um I would say the process to find a supplier I'm happy with now it took me a couple of months awesome okay so and clearly it was worth it because then you didn't have to pay for a thousand dollar jars and passed that on to your customers let's see here CIN CIN Sandra I'm so sorry I'm probably butchering your name was it difficult to find suppliers that would cater to smaller orders wait I'm sorry you broke up I couldn't hear it was it was it difficult to find suppliers that would cater to smaller orders no I was really lucky and that when I started playing around with making my own cosmetics I found several suppliers that actually work with small batch people and so I have some really great suppliers and so that's been okay the problem you might as you might imagine is that I don't have a lot of choice I mean you have a few suppliers to work with of course yeah verbling is asking is it worth it to open a Facebook page for an Etsy shop I only have Pinterest and Instagram but the traffic is very very low what about a Facebook page I wouldn't suggest opening a Facebook page to get traffic yeah traffic is more like or Facebook is more like you can funnel people to Facebook but it kind of ends there like you can't get new people from a Facebook yes unless you buy a Facebook Ads which I do yes yes Facebook Ads totally awesome as long as you test what's converting first and then scale up from there of course Nadine is asking would you recommend making a Facebook group with a sign up call-to-action to join a mailing list what are the advantages of a Facebook group versus mailing list that's a really good question I actually use both in conjunction with one another like the majority of my sales do come from my email list but my facebook group is full off the biggest raving fans and so like what I'll do is I'll throw out special giveaways and bonuses only to people who are in a Facebook group because when the activity level in the Facebook group is high Facebook will consider the content relevant and put in people's feeds so it's not what I don't think you can say like let's just funnel everything into one place and concentrate there because they work there like their different platforms so different things work there and other things work differently in different platforms so I concentrate my energies a lot on boast but I'm not one to another I mean you they also get told in the Facebook group if you want you know a first announcement of all the different under advertised discounts and everything join the mailing list but they also know if you spend a lot of time in the group you get like sometimes I do like a flash giveaway or something and you can't only do it if you're all in a Facebook group all the time so different perks for different sections exactly email list if you want to know first Facebook group if you want to interact engagement giveaways reviews things like that awesome hi my name is tae Vee when you began your business did you start with ten products for your base product line I make jewelry is it okay to start with more than ten but still within Rene's formula I think that when I started I already had about ten products and then I took each to you and then I made another collection and I did I think I did fourteen products in that collection and I would say you could but I don't think that was a good idea in my part because I was just driving myself crazy creating more inventory and I need it too and people just got confused anyway the to anything so I think you can I don't necessarily think you need to and I don't necessarily think would be more effective Lee lien is asking do you have some suggestions on how to start an email list well Rene walks through that in htu where you know offer a discount to join my email list that kind of thing another thing that I've been trying I don't know how effective it has been before is to create my other value filled lead magnets to get people to join your email list I always think it's as easy for a product based business to get signups that way but things that I've done include like you know I'm going to give you a four day email series on all the things you need to learn about to reduce the size of your pores so I've tried things like that as well with varying success if I put it up as a pop-up in my page usually the discounts work feather and then the other lead magnets I've tried Dmitri is asking how often do you email your customers on your email list okay that's another really good question so I actually segment my customer list between those that only read my emails and frequently no sir read my emails a lot and those that night when you read my emails and the ones that I read my emails a lot I email them every day the ones that oh yeah no I go every day that I think but some best users not a seizure that is to say it's not like you know I'm lying that's awesome but I know that's what I'm like you should be emailing a member every week they have a heart attack for once a week but I think that for people who want to hear from you they want to hear from you and it keeps you top of your mind and you're much more willing to buy from you they keep hearing from you because they're like I that's really approved email every day for those who read every day yeah the ones the ones you don't open it so much I email them every week or every two weeks that's great except when I'm having a launch and then they get email it maybe every day launches it's like the PBS yearly thing like you gotta just do yeah exactly I am funding dry moonstruck charms just fell out of her chair thank you so much for coming Adeline and thank you Bessey's for showing up I will have Adalind links down below and in two minutes if you refresh the You Tube video I will have her awesome webinar - which like I will be joining that as all that sounds super fun and exciting so thank you so much Adeline do you have anything else that you want to add oh just that I really am really grateful to H to you and everything that you've done and I've learned so much from you I'm so have a super happy to be interviewed today because my HD was really my start to creating a sustainable business with myself I mean you're a total rock star - like there's no amount of work then that you complained about like Adeline like she just goes quiet and then all of a sudden like she's it's all I know you're a favorite in the in the htu Facebook group thank you alright thanks again Adeline see you later Betsy
