the following is a special presentation of espn on abc music city usa nashville tennessee and all the week long much of the color in this city has either been wildcat blue or rocky top orange today they get to clash in bridgestone arena one senior playing his final scc tournament and a youngster trying to lead his team to a title welcome to nashville tennessee where the sec tournament headliners have lived up to their billings we've seen passion and precision grit and grace now the survivors of the first two rounds square off in their quest for sec supremacy four teams need two wins for one title [Applause] the sec semi-finals of the stage who will be the star it might come down to who wants it more [Music] nashville has been a marvelous host city for the southeastern conference basketball tournament the 2010 edition it is the sec on espn and it's semi-final saturday in the sec tourney all part of championship week presented by dick's sporting goods our first game this afternoon is a dandy a rubber match between kentucky and tennessee number 13 and number two in the country set in game one here at bridgestone arena tennessee had to play back-to-back days they beat ole miss yesterday to get here kentucky with a win over alabama the winner will take on the mississippi state vanderbilt winner and that one comes up a little bit later on this afternoon welcome back to nashville everybody brad nessler along with jimmy dykes you know partner you can talk all you want for kentucky they're looking for their 26 sec title they still have an outside shot at being a number one overall seed tennessee trying to win a crown in their home state you know this has got the makings really of a regional final not a semi-final in a conference tournament all very important stuff but more importantly it's tennessee versus kentucky the day john calipari got hired by kentucky this bitter rivalry went to a whole other level it's bruce pearl's orange blazer against the big blue nation the winner of this game owns this town and owns this part of the country for the next 24 hours that is what's at stake let's take a look at our star watch right now these two guys have been brilliant throughout the tournament headed to all tournament honors for sure wayne chisholm the senior leader for tennessee and john wall i think you've all seen him he's the sec player of the year in just his freshman season but he has been remarkable what a clash what a game in semifinal game one the vols and the wildcats set to do battle next [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a little big and rich well we know we've got some bigs and a lot of these guys someday will be rich tennessee beat kansas and kentucky number one and number two first time that's happened since 2002 season they come in with 25 wins the wildcats have got 30. let's take a look at the starting lineups first for the volunteers of bruce pearl here's how it looks in the backcourt bobby may scotty hopson who's had trouble so far scoring in this building and jp prince who had one of his best games of the year against kentucky up front wayne chisholm and brian williams and for the wildcats of john calipari sensational backcourt two of the guys are freshmen in john wall and eric bledsoe darius miller joins them and up front patrick patterson the veteran and demarcus cousins another super freshman they've met twice this season each team won one tennessee lost the first game 73-62 then came back two weeks later and won 74-65 and you can see kentucky did not shoot well from outside the arc jimmy in that second one that was a key and jp prince was sensational the reason why tennessee's defense that day their zone was manish and their man-to-man was zonish all designed to keep kentucky out of the lane and make kentucky a jump shooting ball club that will be the same formula tennessee tries to use today against john wall and bledsoe and the rest of that kentucky team our officials doug sermons anthony jordan and in his rubber match tip off tony green who was the referee in the previous two meetings tony's got it in hand both teams take the court a lot of respect between these two clubs and a lot of passion has been passed in back and forth in the previous four hours they played we've got two more coming up and this one is bigger than the previous two a chance to get to the title game tomorrow and for kentucky they continue their quest to maybe be an overall number one seed in the ncaa tournament j.p prince demarcus cousins tony green with a ball in the air here we go and immediately wall inside the cousins who missed a jam [Applause] bobby mays will set it at the point for tennessee but i think tennessee wants to score early in this ball game in the shot clock or late that's their way of shortening this game down the more possessions the more rebounds and that favors kentucky they pack it inside to brian williams he's going to go to his right off the back of the iron nice hustle by chisholm trying to steal it after wahl got the rebound playing for a possible three seed for tennessee maybe i mentioned a possible number one overall depends on what kansas does for the big 12 tournament i think tennessee is sitting there at a high four seed right now they win this game they move to the three seed they win the sec tournament they can move up to a two seed so much to play for in this game the big guy got ahead of steam and he's got the first basket it's light trying to guard shrek with those great big huge shoulders he's a likable character sometimes get a little frustrating a little grumpy but his size brad is mammoth on the floor i just had a picture of eddie murphy as the donkey and shrek eight times his size still say he will be the most difficult guy to defend around the rim in the ncaa tournament demarcus cousins scotty hopson would love to get a good start any kind of start in fact he can start from the free-throw line darius miller with the foul that is a great start by hobson since he struggled from shooting that ball drive that ball fought for his drive alley early at bridgestone arena wayne chisholm in his four games here averaging 18 points shooting 54 and scotty hopson's had all kinds of trouble he was their leading scorer for tennessee up until yesterday in fact wow and you can't get it from the free-throw line you know it's not working although scotty is not one of the best free-throw shooters tennis he's got but you can see the frustration he walked away from the line he just knows that this has not been his building and you talked about it is his hometown is only about 45 minutes from here and he's maybe putting too much pressure on himself missed him both important for hobson though to not let his stroke affect the rest of his game he needs to defend his tail off and rebound in this basketball game for bruce pearl there's a lot of other things he can do he doesn't score [Applause] cousins again around williams had it stripped by prince [Applause] and now bledsoever to pull up jumper chisholm with a rebound [Applause] prince nice spin move ran into traffic and ran into cousins and picks up the foul cousin's so good at moving his feet to establish defensive position he is not a shot blocker he is a charge taker as a big guy took several yesterday has led this team in charges throughout the year because of his great footwork and his willingness to take the contact he had foul trouble in the first half yesterday came out in the second half it took two charges in the opening minute now it's three on one maze the prince you don't want to give tennessee an unbalanced floor that results in broken playability again for tennessee score early or score late [Applause] bledsoe's wide open for three what a rebound off the backside by patterson went up over hobson and chisholm they've done it twice already the opening couple of minutes can't lose partner no absolutely cannot lose contact with demarcus cousins either visually or physically [Applause] prince lost the handle momentarily chisholm around a pick on the drive and knocked out of bounds by kentucky anthony jordan asking for some help from doug sermons the right call i think the shot clock is continuing to run so we're gonna have to fix that it's gotta go back to uh i would say roughly 10 maybe as low as eight when i first looked up when the ball went out of bounds the shot clock sits and that's what tony and doug are going to look at over there to try to determine the reset because the ball never hit the rim and it's going to be tennessee ball so it's a matter of how much time they have to inbound and get a shot away [Applause] we'll take a look with you and you see the eight right up there on top of the screen [Music] tennessee shrinking the floor defensively to start this game the reason why again kentucky two out of 22 from the three-point line the last time these two teams played in tennessee pulled off the upset no reason to change that formula if you're bruce pearl jimmy talked about bruce pearl's orange blazer only wears it against kentucky and vanderbilt now we'll get our officials resets and jp prince making sure everybody knows how much time they've got to shoot might be chisholm for three he's gonna drive and again had it knocked out of bounds with five left so pretty much the same scenario good lift fake by chisholm to not settle for what have been a contested three and now with five on the shot clock tennessee's so good at scoring off the baseline out of bounds when chisholm takes it out he's a key williams right back to chisholm you're right jimmy there it is you've got to know when chisholm takes it out they're going to get the ball back to him as soon as he establishes legal position on the floor almost four minutes in a 4-4 tie and a steal by j.p prince he's got bobby mays with him he'll do it himself but it rims up bledsoe coming the other way in a hurry now wall up and under so much speed combined between bledsoe and wall you delete the first drive and there's a kick to the best driver in college basketball to back it up john wall and here's wall driving the other way on the steal yes he did and the big blue comes to life and bridgestone arena up four just like tyrique evans and derrick rose got it done for john calipari in the month of march john wall look at his eye his year under coach cal 10 another shot clock for tennessee crowd in an early frenzy for the wildcats prince has a look up he's gonna have to launch a three and he rimmed out the three-pointer bledsoe's got the rebound katz on the run bledsoe leaves it for cousins with a hook wait a minute traveling not [Applause] cousin kentucky early by four at the sec tournament semifinals as jimmy said the best driver in college basketball here he comes making like jimmy johnson eight four cats espn's exclusive presentation of the sec tournament on abc brought to you by ing your number find it at ing your number dot com and cisco welcome to the human network [Music] john wall already pretty good box score line four points a rebound an assist a block and a steal and we're only five minutes into the game kentucky by four chisholm for three he's gonna take about four of those a game and he makes a good deal of them not that time though kentucky trying to force feed demarcus cousins early in this ball game i like the game plan not the execution of the pass but cousins has coasted the last three ball games they must get this guy in tune early offensively [Applause] cameron tatum we had a big game here as well maybe cousins will do it himself chisholm got him as he hits the deck hard and he'll have to earn it from the free-throw line all right we've already seen a couple of steals by kentucky in this game they set back on their heels when they are upset in knoxville and allowed tennessee to grind it out with their flex version offensively not so far to start this game kentucky is getting out shooting passing lanes going to make tennessee speed up remember kentucky in the second game scored the first four points and then tennessee ran off 18. but that was at thompson bowling arena it's a six-point kentucky lead let's check in third member of our team janine edwards well brad kentucky leads the nation in rebounding margin but in their last five games they have been out rebounded and that is a stat that sticks in the craw of coach john calipari he said rebounding is all about effort bottom line calipari staff keeps track of effort they call them hustle points during games they hit a new season low in their game yesterday versus alabama calipari wants and expects more effort from his team and many cousins as getting some more rebounds was one of the things he talks about guys demarcus had a nice steal but he didn't pay off from the free-throw line last five trips for tennessee 0 for three from the floor and they've turned it over a couple of times let's see if they have better luck this trip trying to cut into what is now a six-point kentucky lead championship week continues on espn tonight's conference championships phillips 66 big 12 title in kansas city kansas and kansas state and then at nine new york life brings to georgetown and west virginia in the big east championship i may have set a six-point lead it's a four-point lead 8-4 marcus cousins gets a breather in order for kentucky to grab that overall number one seed they need to win their tournament they need kansas to lose that game in the big 12 title darius miller now it's a six point lead and wayne chisholm usually stands when he's not in the lineup because his back stiffens up on him bad hit bad back that everything wayne says this is not a good offensive team that tennessee has on the floor with exception of tatum as a shooter and prince as a driver you can defend them goings will try one kenny hall and a hand on it prince picks up the loose ball and when it strips kentucky running with wall he walked with it he'll get away with that next year sure somebody asked me earlier how you how do you defend john wall i said you need to ask the best guards in the nba because the college guys haven't figured it out his ability to take over a basketball game and not only beat his guy but the second defender and the third defender exceptional three-pointer for tennessee still won't go patterson had his hand on it let's see who's going to win that rebound kentucky [Applause] only nine teams in the nation brad are less experienced than the kentucky wildcats zero teams in the nation have more talent and this time of the year i take talent over experience and kentucky has it right now they've got a six-point lead with that talent liggins patterson really asking for it down there against county hall they don't get it to him yet they still know and the rebounder be tatum's [Applause] tatum's going to try to take it coast to coast they'll go to the free-throw line [Applause] we talked about the youth of kentucky all starters look at the numbers they have met expectations because the expectations for these three guys were to lead kentucky to an sec championship a number one seed in the national championship and they are on track right now at least heading into the ncaa tournament that freshman recruiting class that cal put together quickly at kentucky right there with the best i think in the last 15 years maybe ohio state in 2006 with greg oden mike conley daquan cook david lighty north carolina 06 also ty lawson brandon wright wayne ellington stevenson dion thompson yeah the fab five those would be the other three that i would put in this group with kentucky over the last 15 20 years probably [Applause] patterson had his hands on the rebound on the miss by dodson but couldn't hold it finally says scotty hopson look at the look on his face a field goal drops for much less a three [Applause] that makes it a two-point game that'll fire up tennessee and brad hopson didn't hesitate he's been a little hesitant the first two days in this building but but on the catch in the shot pocket the release the rotation and the result and scotty hopson mount now might be the offensive guy that the balls have lacked [Music] the sec on espn championship week presented by dick sporting goods 10-8 kentucky in this first semi-final of the day scotty hopson on the bench from hopkinsville kentucky about 45 minutes from here look at the reaction after he finally got a field goal to go and it was a three-pointer that just might be the spark as jimmy said going to break that will light him up because they need him look what he's done in this building prior to today three for 29. going back over his games last year here and not only is that a momentum basket for scotty hopson but his teammates have to feel very good in that huddle knowing that hopson might be back tough inbounds catch by demarcus cousins kentucky brought over two from the three-point line in this game i just need to make a handful to balance out that power inside game they have and the inside game is a turnover trying to get it to patterson hopson is he going to think about another one he'll drive for this that was blocked partially but followed up by kenny hall so the freshman kenny hall ties it at 10. i like the decision by hobson because he didn't just completely buy in that everything's great with his stroke that would have been a challenge three and he does something off the bounce and again trying to force it to patterson cousins finds the handle and a chance for a three-point play and that was just a muscle shot most guys don't even get that thing to the rim because he was getting fouled but watch the power of number 15. braddy's strong as an ox he's got a set of shoulders on him that no one else in college basketball has and very few at the next level has 6 11 280 85 pounds [Applause] and his commitment to run rim to rim in three or four minute spurts very impressive what john calipari has gotten out of this young man and hopson thought about breaking to the basket and pearl a bounce pass that went nowhere except out of bounds let's check in with janine well brad and jimmy bruce pearl was just emphasizing to his team in that last timeout kentucky has not been able to score on us in the half court keep it up guys you're doing a good job they're doing a good job on that defense on the interior to make some of those passes ricochets and still align drives which is what happened early wall that time he found his man patrick first basket young man knows how to fight for his drives demi there will be nothing given to either team in this building today you have to have a guy like john wall that will just insert his will offensively tennessee's got to take a timeout couldn't get the ball inbound bruce pearl upset with the officiating kentucky by that basket [Music] bridgestone arena's got a great feel sec semifinals here in nashville brad john wall is going to work off of a ball screen up top and you have got to fight him out of that lane because he's going to fight himself to a passing alley and patterson does a great job of drifting slightly off of the drive of john wall bobby mays minus the headband if you're watching at home and you don't know who's playing point guard right now [Applause] hopson a runner scotty hopson coming to life when his team needs him the most [Applause] tennessee has already used both man and zone in this game and they look very similar kentucky has to cut through to identify what the defense is that's the only way to figure it out wall leaves it for orton from the free-throw line williams had a hand on it wall stole it from it wall was six maze leaves it underneath for williams and it strips and out of bounds tennessee ball this is similar to yesterday pretty much told him to go sit down and see the reaction of demarcus cousins and that's been going on since day one of practice john calipari has more patience with guys like demarcus cousins than anyone else in the college game hey bobby mays tennessee can get him rolling a little bit that would really help as well he cuts it down to one in order to beat kentucky you have to have guys like bobby mays and when they step off the bus they think they're going to beat kentucky and there's not a lot of those kind of guys around tennessee has a group of them i walked by bobby mays about 10 minutes before the game i said good luck bobby he said it's going to be a good one he's right so far cousins in the lane the championship week continues on espn and here on abc a couple of conference titles for you one o'clock the miami duke winner taking on the winner of georgia tech and nc state for the acc title and at one o'clock jimmy and i and jeannie will be here the winner of this one against the winner of vandy and mississippi state for the sec crown demarcus cousins is having trouble from the freezer line today 0-4-4 and only 64 demarcus cousins on the year and as much as he's going to get fouled and as much contact he's going to absorb in the ncaa tournament he needs to take that thing above 70. john calipari is letting everybody know what he wants and what he doesn't want i don't know if daniel orton didn't like what he heard or if coach calipari said why don't you head back there on your own but he's just going through the tunnel i assume back to the locker room john wall another big rebound he will come down and wait for some help miller in the corner for three darius miller john wall loves and lives in the middle third of the floor in transition and tennessee built their defense in the middle third of the floor but then it opens up open three-point shots on the wing bobby mays missed that three and wahl's got another easy rebound that time leaves it for bledsoe underneath fouled by williams that'll be william's second so he and chisholm the two big guys each with two fouls for a young kid john wall understands the power part of the floor in transition is the middle third because all the attention defensively has to be attracted to that part of the floor it opens up rim runs from the wing and three-point shots you think these two teams don't want it we got coaches yelling at refs we got coaches in players faces we got players talking back to coaches we got players going to the locker room we got a little bit of everything and we still got eight minutes to go in the first half when you sign on to play for tennessee one of the reasons is you have a severe dislike for kentucky and when you sign up to play for kentucky one of the reasons is you have a severe dislike for tennessee did you see that orton just came back and john calipari gave him five all is well as bledsoe hits two free throws john calipari's concern going in that ncaa tournament do his young guys understand brad you have to lay exhausted exhausted in the locker room after every game from here on out he's not sure his young guys have figured that part out yet the score on the scoreboard at richstone arena for the 87th time we assume is wrong and ours is good 21-15 i just take an average usually of what we have on the screen and what they have on the scoreboard not go with that pearl on a runner doesn't usually score but he knocked that one down brad remember tennessee score early in the shot clock or late there's another basket and a good one with single digits on the shot clock liggins back out to bledsoe wide open cousins one hands a rebound try to throw it back up there that was rejected he's down on the deck tennessee has numbers but they don't use it and now cousins is all alone what about being in the right place at the right time on the wrong end and a foul on miller that'll be his second boy this has got a feel of an ncaa regional final here in nashville it's the semi-final of the sec tournament in nashville sometimes when you're on the deck just dust yourself off wait for the ball to come back [Music] my man kenny chesney bringing us back it is a moment to shine for the four remaining team in the sec basketball tournament championship week presented by dick sporting goods this is semifinal number one mississippi state and vandy will follow this has been a dandy so far kentucky leads by six brad nessler jimmy dykes janine edwards with you at bridgestone arena number 13 in the country against number two in the country janine and jimmy both went to the respective huddles of tennessee and kentucky janine what do you got well brad bruce pearl was pointing out to his guys that you know turnovers are leading to easy buckets for kentucky right now their transition defense is also a little bit lacking so he wants his guys to do a better job guarding in the half court and then at the end of the play clock is when they're going to run their set he and he also is emphasizing guys all five of you have to get back in transition jimmy how about kentucky well two major things stood out to me in kentucky's huddle john caliparian said i want all eyes on me look at me if you have an open look against that sagging defense of tennessee you take the shot with confidence if you don't you're coming out and john wall just took a pretty confident stroke the other thing that stood out partnering in that huddle only two voices were going on john calipari's and john wall those are the two guys doing the talking to the teammate that's what you want out of your point guard this time of the year wow what a fade away one hander off the glass by wayne [Applause] chisholm [Applause] gave one up maybe should have taken it steal and a trip by liggins just what john calipari told his guys brad you saw bledsoe turned down a three let's go back to watch chisholm first of all boom gets a little bit of contact with that left shoulder to get some separation chasing a guy that is so difficult to defend calipari feels like he will play in the nba because of his versatility i really don't know where wayne's headband ended up after that shot but it's not on his head anymore bledsoe turned down a three and john calipari told his guys in that huddle every time you turn down a look it results in a turnover by us get this shot up on the rim this anthony jordan one of our officials took the head man and tossed it here's wheezy minus the headband with a left hand that was kind of a prayer orton nice rebound but the flip out was not good underhand outlet pass went almost right to coach calapero [Applause] no surprise john calipari was the senior class president in high school prom team point guard on the district champion basketball team had a rough life and a foul as hobson was driving the lane on darnell dodson john calipari if you don't know if you don't watch sec basketball in his first season as a head coach in lexington last year his memphis team went 33-4 right now his kentucky teams trying to go to 31 and two time out couldn't get it in for the second time tennessee having trouble with an inbounds play so they take a timeout with 5 22 remaining first half before the game kentucky taking the floor i'd say they were loose enough there's demarcus cousins with some of his moves patrick patterson the veteran got it going on and of course everybody does the john wall dance if you're wearing blue john created that little muscle flex thing that everybody in every arena does when he shows up it's really easy to do but your bicep might not look like john walls that's a loose confident group and the importance of winning conference tournaments i think is obvious when you consider eight of the last 12 national champions brad won their conference tournament you never get tired of winning you never get tired of competing if you're john calipari with a young team they have to be hot hungry and healthy and part of being hungry is how hungry are you for wins this time of the year gotta have the triple h huh this is your threads to a national title i think this is very important the last 10 national champions had at least a 10-game winning streak in the regular season a scoring margin of plus 10 points a game in the regular season and they were above 500 in true road games kentucky answers yes yes and yes to all three of those threads there's a blocking foul at pearl as john wall went to the rack so he'll go to the free-throw line kentucky has a winning streak this year 21 in a row their plus 14 scoring margin and they are six and two in true road games to me the most important one is that regular season winning streak of 21 partner because in order to do that you have to be able to win ball games when you're playing at your best and when you're not playing at your best and you win win 21 in a row you've proven you can do that and we've seen them do both we have we've had them enough times to know that on the off nights they can still find a way to pull it out right now they've got eight points from john wall and their lead is extended back to six [Applause] arsenal sits so right now for tennessee it's hall tatum prince pearl and bobby mays remember chisholm's got two fouls so does brian williams so this is a much smaller lineup and as jimmy said earlier it's one that you have to look at and say okay who's gonna put the ball in the basket maybe prince if he gets a decent drive [Applause] again they're going to take this shot clock under 10. trying to limit the number of possessions in the game nice overplay with a long right arm of demarcus cousins with a seven foot seven and a quarter inch wingspan i always hate to call it wingspan because these guys aren't birds but nobody else has been able to come up with any other terminology for that but long arms just put it badly pearl has to bring it way back and now they're going to have to hurry bobby mays has got to look up there and know he's got to shoot from way out and he almost got it off the front of the iron that was not a good possession for tennessee but a good defensive stop for kentucky bruce pearl lost his club on the other end of the floor lost communication amazing point guard has to accept it another four minutes now cousins kicks it right back out to dotson missed the three and patrick patterson i think pushed off trying to get position for that rebound off the backside it's packed in here over 19 thousand outside still looking for tickets that's where i watched the two games last night no i'm kidding houston came into the conference usa tournament as a number seven seed going against the one seed utep and they pull off the upset houston is going to the tournament for tom penders as head coach they trailed by as many as nine in this game this means the bubbles going to burst for someone else because now conference usa is likely to get two teams in utep at 26-6 going all right john well how's that going to affect your jet then jimmy joe dikes well some team is going to have to take their luggage out of the overhead compartment right now at the back of the plane and i'm going to say it's washington right there i think that's the team that just got knocked off the jet with that houston upset virginia tech washington illinois back there the back of the plane with rhode island right now i think it's washington that just got said sir i need your ticket and your luggage come with me we'll keep that jet at the gate we'll revisit it later we'll try not to keep people aboard it more than three hours it could cause a fine to the airline but we'll look at it again a little bit later on mississippi state is out there at the gate right now cleaning their standby case we'll see them in the next semi-final demarcus cousins stood in strong to get that rebound off the missed by jp prince and now kentucky playing with a six-point lead they're gonna slow it down a little bit no reason for tennessee to get the toes of their shoes brad above the three-point line defensively [Applause] and there's another tip pass and another turnover prince had it knocked away from behind and off his elbow you saw demarcus cousins saying i didn't touch it j.p prince are saying neither did i tennessee turnover fred how about the effort of demarcus cousins 6-11-285 to run step for step with jp prince as a wolf defender coming from behind that was a 50-50 call there ryan williams who has two fouls heading to the locker room right now i'm not sure if he was shaken up earlier or not but he'll get an extra two and a half minutes in the locker room prince comes up with another steal now can tennessee convert not yet they didn't score early so now they'll try to score late [Applause] as hot as he was yesterday you think they'd want to get tatum a touch from long range they're running him on the baseline right now it's goins that's not a good shot not with three guys in your face and two of them are 611. nope [Applause] bledsoe that is a good shot when kentucky starts doing that they gonna beat you by double figures because they are a powerfully built two-point territory team almost double figures now up nine and tatum and it's stripped by bledsoe he and wall run together it's bledsoe with the left hand and he missed it but wall keeps it alive somehow in all that traffic john wall came up with that ball now they can play for a double-digit lead right here [Applause] [Music] and they're going to take a time out to talk about it [Applause] 114 until halftime and number two kentucky pulling away from tennessee right now abc you're home for the nba sunday showcase coming up tomorrow eastern conference title contenders cleveland and celtics will square off nba sunday showcase all gets underway with coverage of the gmc sierra nba countdown at three o'clock there's a guy knows a little bit about the nba and about kentucky former player one erupts runs pat riley let's check in with janine well brad ryan williams for tennessee just went back to the locker room he actually went into the training room he took a hard hit to his back he was limping slightly um and so he's going to be checked out by the trainers all right thanks denise we're trying to get another report at halftime and brian williams they need him in the second half but big guys in foul trouble has not helped the cause there's probably the play or the foul and that's when he walked to the sideline knowing that he had two personals he has made great use of the second chance brian williams coming back from the suspension and they need his size in this ball game and be a big blow if he can't return demarcus cousins in the past few games we've talked about his scoring problems not a problem in the first half they got him involved early and often and he's got nine points under a minute now and it is a double-digit lead for kentucky brad tennessee without wayne chisholm for a big part of this first half if they can just get to the locker room in single digits bruce pearl will have some momentum to build with you know demarcus coaster just ripped it out of the hands of tennessee this is a very dangerous time right now if you're a volunteer fan because kentucky is doing things like that and tennessee's not ashley judge loving it i don't know where he's going that's two of them he's put up in there against two guys that are a foot taller than he is and now to make matters worse he picks up a foul in the backcourt bad decision by going right before the half allowing kentucky to get this ball back and put more points on the board demarcus cousins is a man and his strength his quickness his footwork really something special to behold congrat again he's there to clean that up because of his commitment to run from rim to rim something he would not or could not do october and november but caleb perry has gotten it out of him i'm glad you finally caught him a man after shrek and an ox he's a man he's a man he's all of that he's a really he's a really likable guy you know he's uh he can be a little grumpy at times and coach kyle puts up with it as long as this big dude produces and he has been producing john wall has been two he's on his way to double figures to join cousins if he hits this next free throw chisholm comes back in he's got two fouls tennessee's had a long drought a long scoring drop you don't want to do that against a team this good why did bruce pearl put wayne chisholm back in this game with 17 seconds to go he's going to get a touch and don't be surprised that it's not a three see where they're running he's down in the low block right now running out of time hobson waits for the traffic to pass but he's way short on the shot pearl puts it back up there no good and kentucky in command at halftime it was very close for a long time and then the orange clad volunteers went on a drought and kentucky went on an 11-2 run and they've got a big lead as we check in with janine before the game i talked to coach califari about rebounding and as it translates into effort how do you like what you see so far in terms of effort i love our energy i love our toughness in a game like this you know how they're playing they're going to grab and hold flop chart you got to play through all that and that's all we talked about i thought the first five minutes was the most important part of this game now the most important why is that because what they did to us up there was 18-4 then we won the rest of the game but you're down 18-4 this second half the first five minutes is going to be the most important now of this half okay and we'll see what happens thanks coach well what happened was tennessee has its lowest output of the season courtesy of the kentucky defense kentucky with a lead of 13 at the break 32-19 as we head to the studio john saunders steve levin guys rascal flatts bringing us back and right now it's kentucky rockin tennessee and the sec on espn semifinals saturday all part of championship week presented by dick sporting goods as we're back inside bridgestone arena halftime 32-19 lowest scoring first half for tennessee all year long they did not shoot well 29 as we take a look at our lg first half statistics 29 for the floor for tennessee that's not going to do it kentucky with 20 points in the paint and they shot 50 and as i mentioned lowest scoring half the uh other low scoring half was yesterday whether two days ago against lsu when they had twenty come to life in the second half like they did in that one brad nestor jimmy dykes judy woods and it's espn on abc on the semifinals saturday from nashville kentucky played good in the first half they didn't play great and they better like john calipari told janine come out the first four minutes of this half and take it up another level because wayne chism was in foul trouble when he played 10 minutes and the offense goes so much through him it really changes this game if wayne chism gets involved nice to see brian williams get a touch and nice to see him back out there playing with a bad back but he'll continue to play says the coaching staff of tennessee here's a lob in the corner and a three-pointer in roots battle for the rebound everybody going after it and williams saved it bad back at all bobby meza head to chisholm score it back-to-back baskets by the two big guys that jimmy was talking about john calipari says i've seen enough a minute into the second half time out kentucky don't think bruce pearl didn't tell his guys the importance of the first four minutes 32-23 the lead's been cut into scott calipari is top seeded wildcats number two in the country still worrying or maybe not worrying but thinking they could end up with a number one overall seed brad that's what jimmy dykes he told janine go in the locker room first four minutes important he waited a minute and five seconds not the other two minutes and 55 seconds called timeout well here's why there's only nine teams in the country younger than the kentucky wildcats when they lost at south carolina he told uni one of the mistakes he made was he kept his timeouts in his pocket and he had him when he got on the bus that's right you don't want to do that with a young team john calipari burns one and makes sure to drive home the point again this game is far from over four point start for tennessee before that timeout bledsoe walked with it [Applause] one two three good call the game changes with wayne chisholm on the floor number four the offense looks different he can stretch you he's a good passer he only played 10 minutes in the first half got to be careful setting those screens he just about hitchhiked somebody out of bounds on that one they've got him working around the perimeter he's taken one three-point shot today usually good for four or five hobson's going to try three williams had a hand on it but cousins ripped it away and now it's john wall ian bledsoe will slow things down cousins asking for it chisholm's tangle up with him down there defensively walt mid-range jump shot nice hustle by demarcus cousins [Applause] and a three on the way whoa how did cousins get that one and now out of pure frustration i almost think between williams and chisholm they foul it i'll tell you how chism excuse me cousins get this rebound brad he's a man those powerful shoulders are finished off with a soft set of paws this guy does not fumble balls that are in his area he gets 50 50 rebounds he gets 70 30 rebounds the ones that normal guys would only get 30 percent of the time he comes up with him i said one time about demarcus cousins when you and i were doing a game it's like having a tree growing in your driveway you pull in you go how do i get in the garage i got this big tree in the way and the tree hit one of two free throws and the tree can move and move your maze all the way over those limbs didn't get enough height on it and williams his hustle keeps it alive for tennessee [Applause] hobson on a runner and he'll go to the free-throw line i think bruce pearl really likes what he has seen from his guys the opening couple of minutes of the second half much more aggressive i think they are much more confident with their leader wayne chism on the floor we'll see how scotty hopson likes the rims on the other end five points for him in the first half they only had six all day yesterday win the win over ole miss [Applause] have you talked about the limbs of demarcus cousins well he's going to stretch those long arms out with that 6 11 285 pounds to 7 feet seven inches and that's a long long wingspan don't forget the quarter because that's what he tipped that last shot at good point scotty hopson drains both and that might help his eye a little bit having two free ones they work on his stroke he's got tennessee back there with an eights [Applause] is he going to stick with that zone no reason to come out of it the way kentucky has fired up threes check in with janine well brad you guys were talking about kentucky's physicality and that is exactly what coach bruce pearl talked to me about at halftime he said you know what they are limiting us so much with their physicality he said they're disrupting us offensively we are not able to handle the contact he said i told my guys this is where you need to toughen up it looks so far like they took those words to heart scally hopson with the foul as far as just mass brian williams has i guess enough mass to play with demarcus cousins but he's still not as big as demarcus and i've seen way too many times players in this ball game looking to an official patting their elbow patting their arms saying i got hit forget that mess this is this is a big boys game and it's a man's game and there's a lot at stake and you have to play through that contact just like john calipari talked about going at the half john wall stepped down the baseline kentucky turns it over you see brian williams kind of playing with that lower back that's been bothering him but he's playing through it playing very well here in the second half chisholm thought about a three but cousins got on him quickly you have to respect chisholm no brad and that also opens up some backdoor cuts and some easier shots at the rim cousins on the glass chism keeps it alive they're gonna have to hurry hopson in the lane got it up still didn't hit the rim and then a foul to boots offensive foul the recovery speed of demarcus cousins and john wall outstanding because you talk about a blow-by move that looked like a guaranteed two points for tennessee look at walling cousins their first two steps are very quick and they recover and cover up mistakes beautifully just checked to mark his cousin's wingspan and he used all of it to pin that one against the window four minutes into the second half here's cousins on offense with a big wings as far as bigs that you're going to have to game plan for in the ncaa tournament demarcus cousins is going to lead the charge pole aldrich at kansas with the morris twins jackson and anuaku at syracuse cornell has a big seven footer named jeff foote eagle cedar at northern iowa not a lot of those seven foot big bodies kentucky has a plethora of them not many guys have one of these though nope he just comes down knows when it's time to try to take a little bit of the fire away from the opponent and drains the outside jumper don't forget this is game one of two here the espn on abc sec semifinal saturday mississippi state and vanderbilt will follow right now it's a fight between the balls and the cats cats are winning that battle right now by 10. wall again in traffic pearl got a hand on it enough to fouling but keep him from scoring and wall hits the deck great job by wall to cover up the ball and make sure he gets himself to the free-throw strike he understands all the fine points of a transition point guard [Applause] the sec on espn championship week presented by dick sporting goods this first semifinal game has been all kentucky they've led throughout this was john wall right before the timeout pearl stripping him with the ball he landed on his right knee as he hit the deck and there was the reaction during the timeout and he's in a lot of pain he'll be going to the free-throw line he comes back out my partner just ran over to their huddle john wall working on his right knee after that last play jimmy brad it's the right knee but he's fine again he's taking command of the huddle the only voice i heard was john walls and john calipari just like derrick rose stepped up for coach calip memphis and tyreek evans in tournament time the point guard has to be the vocal guy i thought john made a great point to his kids he said we are five minutes into the second half if you are tired take yourself out you have to play extremely hard and he talked about that yesterday with me about his guys sometimes they don't understand his young players you can't go six seven straight minutes of all-out effort he reminded them in that timeout take yourself out i'm trusting you to be honest with me now ball's got 12 points no problem with the free throw and he missed the second so john calipari talked about the importance of the first four or five minutes of the second half he didn't like the first minute in five seconds he called a timeout his team now has come back around to lead by double digits up 11. prince wow blocked my cousins who got a lot of ball and demarcus is saying did i really get him well picks up his first foul so it's not bad he's not in foul trouble i love the fight though by j.p that is all ball up top now with the hands of demarcus cousins i think that's a clean block j.p prince went with a purpose and so did demarcus cousins up top demarcus didn't complain about it that time to anybody that's good jp prince first trip to the free-throw line today 63 of the year jimmy's talked throughout his tennessee career about how offset he is from the middle of the free-throw lane when he shoots with that left hand and this time it's off the mark he steps about a foot and a half this is the center right there that's where you would normally line up to get rim ready and look where he steps he's done his in his entire career [Applause] second of two for prince that time it worked for him jp has got five still a double-digit advantage for kentucky you start wondering pretty soon does tennessee have a run in them bledsoe from three i'll ask you what did bledsoe do as soon as he caught that basketball straight up just like his coach told him let that thing fly you get an open look and you don't take it you're coming out bledsoe got the message they match their biggest advantage they got their crowd into it as well nice pass from tatum down to williams chance for a three-point play brian williams has been big offensively here in the second half and they desperately need him and at some point they're going to need chism to come to life offensively ryan williams right here going to set the screen and then sprint to the rim it's like a pro cut set spin and sprint he does a great job brad at getting his 280 pounds under control at the end of that play to go straight up and avoid the charge and even though patrick patterson had some nice help defense he couldn't quite get there fast enough and cousins may have touched that on the rim that's what bruce pearl is calling for but that's not the call so we're six minutes into the second half wildcats by 11. [Applause] bledsoe same spot same result that's a mistake by tennessee defensively you have to shade eric bledsoe especially after he makes one he'll make two or three in a row on you if you let him get fish into the rim biggest lead of the game for kentucky and a charging foul to boots and now everybody in blue is going to be up look at that when eric bledsoe catches that ball brad he has about a 10 foot buffer between himself and an orange jersey and there's our guy cousins again stepping in to take a charge a very dangerous spot right now if you're a volunteer fan down 14 and wall trying to add to it [Applause] hurl got a tough rebound [Applause] [Music] prince and he'll have a chance for a three-point play nice drive by j.p prince don't forget championship weekend news on espn tonight a couple of conference titles phillips 66 big 12 title in kansas city between kansas and kansas state that'll be a dandy in the big east championship presented by new york life georgetown and west virginia tomorrow will crown an sec champion on abc will it be kentucky tennessee mississippi state or vanderbilt right now kentucky is in the driver's seat to have one of those tickets kansas and kentucky in first class in my jet they're settled in flight attendant has already asked them would you like a diet coke before we take off they aren't going anywhere they are locked solid in first class [Applause] wall trying to get it to patterson to settle for orton and an offensive foul on darius miller there's a lot of guys hitting the deck and we've had a number of charging calls in the basketball game chisholm back in darius miller gets taken out of the game because john calipari tells him if you don't shoot an open shot you are coming out [Applause] all thought about a three and finally decides to take it and miss it [Applause] liggins is wide open on the baseline trying to leave it for patterson hopson with a steal and he'll take it coast to coast and deandre liggins will be the next guy to come out for kentucky you watch on this substitution liggins will sit and replacement will come in riley darius miller [Music] the one thing that could hold kentucky back for winning the national championship their inability or lack of confidence in open shots liggins turns down one and he drives into traffic around the rim and allows a broken play floor for [Music] tennessee [Music] so it's down to single digits again tennessee trailing by nine ryan williams has had a good second half playing with a bad back wayne chisholm his back's not the greatest either and he's back out there along with prince and kenny hall scotty hopson and melvin goins for tennessee you know when bruce pearl puts that orange blazer on two or three times a year it means it's a different day and his kids understand when they see that orange blazer on the sidelines there is no way there is no way we don't go down without a serious fight i said earlier it only goes on for kentucky and vanderbilt otherwise it's in the closet or at the dry cleaners [Applause] and charge taken by prince patterson with the foul his third well it hasn't been a great smiley day for bruce pearl but all week some of the faces with james brown you don't know [Music] well sportscenter in game in vermont trying to make it back to the tournament again marcus blakely throws this one down hard against boston u vermont wins and they are going to the ncaa tournament somewhere our former colleague tom brennan is smiling as he watches his former team cut down the nets meanwhile take a look at the miami duke score duke is trailing by three at halftime and ohio state also looking for a number one seed trailing illinois all right john i can tell you where tom brennan's been most of the week here in nashville as one of the legends former georgia bulldog tom and his wife have been here since uh wednesday i don't know if they're still here i assume they are as a matter of fact they were out there at halftime he was introduced at halftime so he's here chisholm missed in close easiest shot they've had all day for tennessee you have to quickly shake that one off if your wing chisholm can get back and defend [Applause] kentucky on the floor with bledsoe and cuzzies wall dodson and orton here comes the vanderbilt commodores off the buster main field leading the way and likewise jarvis bernardo and mississippi state that's the second semifinal coming up right here on abc about 20 minutes or so after the conclusion of this one wall with five to shoot dodson will take a three cousins another strong rebound and he's fouled that is john calipari's point to his kids in the huddle you have an open shot you have to take it because we are a dominant offensive rebounding team we can't rebound shots we don't take after that shot lo and behold of all guys demarcus cousins went over to daniel orton and pushed him away from wayne chisholm as they were having words you gotta love it demarcus cousins peacemaker right here look at this you talk about a guy that has matured he's still only 19 years old it's not even fair to expect this guy to be a finished product mentally or physically and he has come a long long ways and he still has a long ways to go [Applause] that was good to see now we'll call him peacemaker after we go oxman [Applause] peacemaker 10-point game [Applause] same guys getting tangled up down low wouldn't shock me you see again john calipari he goes from elation to disgust in the blink of an eye one-on-one time now for tennessee brad i think after this season a hot topic this weekend and will continue to be a hot topic should the sec go away from keeping divisional standings in conference play not change your scheduling but go away from a east and west winner and just have a 1-12 format like the acc and the big 12. if you do that kentucky would be playing the winner of the 4-5 game today which is mississippi state in the semis and tennessee will be playing vanderbilt in a 2-3 matchup that would reward and protect your top four teams and i think that topic is green is gaining a lot of momentum right now from folks in the nashville area it has in this city in the last three or four days that's for sure cousins after he got a rebound on the other end going baseline to spin around he's got his 19th double-double already demarcus cousins well you can see how good the east was against the west this year and that lone blemish was florida losing yesterday of the top four teams i should say and brad that's this year you know next year it might be a mississippi state that dominates this league they should be rewarded like an overall number one seed kansas has been rewarded in the big 12. think about this last night the vanderbilt is the second best team they've proven that in this league in the regular season play they should be the number two seed in a one through 12 format had they been so they would have played the first game of the night session last night instead they play the late game they don't leave the building till after midnight and they're back here this afternoon yeah that's another reason to look at constructive growth for this league well you saw if you're going to stay here all night have your uk snuggie on which that couple obviously purchased at christmas time for one another there you go why did we not think of the snuggie thing well i don't know you and i i don't know we could retire at that lake house you had with no water if we did right that's right [Music] still a 10-point game as demarcus cousins is 3 out of 13 from the free-throw line they'll come see you this summer and sit on your boat on some dirt you can go skiing on the dirt nice drive by hobson i like what this young fella has done in this game he made one three-point shot but he has driven this ball with a purpose they might not be playing perfectly offensively but they're in single digits with kentucky bledsoe same spot this time it doesn't go but orton keeps it alive now wall and blood soaked rod won too many passes hopsing trying to beat him to the basket and bledsoe ripped it out of his hands but threw it away great hustle by eric bledsoe to get back stripped that ball but then trying to save it he threw it back out of bounds hopson did an outstanding job at getting bledsoe on his left side but the last second that burst that surge that bledsoe has with the basketball boom comes into play right there as a defender [Applause] more tennessee scores here and you won't want to go away for the last nine minutes and they do ryan williams all of a sudden the balls within six and bruce pearl says how about a little help there's just not enough orange in the building but he's getting some wall down to patterson that's how you end a run for kentucky and now all the fans in blue orange stick up 47-39 i think you just saw how kentucky plans on answering runs in the ncaa tournament go to patterson chisholm got a good look at a three but missed it patrick will walk up with john wall as they both hit the front court together [Applause] bledshow got it time out with 8 31 left back to 11 for kentucky red tennessee gets a big basket out of brian williams right here he's gonna work off the screen and get down here to this low block area wayne chisholm with the ball opens up the back end of the offense for tennessee that's why he's important that he's on the floor but what does kentucky do to answer it's wall to patterson and i think that will be their formula not only in the remainder of this tournament but in the ncaa tournament when they have to have a basket it will be patterson on the inside which then opens up the perimeter and when they've had to have a three in the second half eric bledsoe has knocked down three of them for them i think the biggest problem for tennessee right now is they've been unable to get wayne chisholm involved offensively if they don't in the next eight and a half minutes they're not going to win it kentucky's defense is a blanket yeah they're one of the better defensive teams in college basketball right now with their size the tallest team in college basketball average height of 6-7 they can really swallow you up and take away your vision take away your drive angles and take away your threes trouble getting the ball in again that's about the third time today that tennessee's having some difficulty and now bobby mays working against bledsoe who's had a hot hand from the outside for the cats look at bledsoe ice bobby mays on this side of the floor not letting him go across the top williams tried to get it to his partner down low and wayne chisholm that was kicked by kentucky bledsoe's gonna get a breather and he's gonna be a big ovation when he heads over to that bench from everybody in the blue in the stands he talks so much about wall and cousins and patterson he might be the entire key to this team bledsoe because he can really light you up defensively as an on-ball defender and he has lit up bobby mays so far in this game ryan williams hook shot is off the mark and he got it back somehow out the hands of john wall they feed it down to chisholm they want him involved and he lost his headband again but he'll go to the free-throw line to be able to put it back on and daniel orton and wayne chisholm and company are not enjoying each other's company and there's a technical on is it on chisel or williams and bruce pearl wants an explanation from doug sermons we might have another technical i'm not sure if we got one or two i know we've got one a technical autism and that's his fourth foul too and i don't know what wayne said his facial expression didn't change much he got tangled up i think with orton again because that's what we could see from our vantage point and then it looked like everything was calm that he was going to get his free throws and all of a sudden came the t out of the pile okay now now doug sermons has held up three fingers on each hand which would indicate daniel but we also got a report from the scorers table that said it was number four so we're just going to hold the phone until we figure it out double technical they both got one so four was right 33 was right and he personal on patrick patterson i believe patterson would have been the guy that fouled chisholm as he tried to take the shot [Applause] we'll watch it again we'll be able to determine that all right now there's orton and prince tangled up williams has something to say orton does a wheel about runs into the captain of the volunteers number four and in all that mess there was a missed shot by wayne chisholm while he was shooting and the person who foul was on patterson they haven't got all that squared away don't we yeah you did a great job partner and tony green and anthony jordan and doug sermons they gave the players time to cool down they didn't immediately step in and stick a t they gave him about four or five seconds the guys didn't buy into it and ultimately bam bam great job of officiating by green jordan and sermons that free throw bounced around and finally went in favor of wayne chisholm a senior out of jackson tennessee playing in a 137 games in that orange uniform more than anybody in school history and he got both free throws [Applause] so it's back to single digits again set in the open when john calipari got hired at kentucky this rivalry went to another level it has gone through another level in this building this afternoon sure has as if it wasn't good enough at ruff and thompson bowling bridgestone arena is getting their share of it right now that's it got a three did not hesitate a great find from up top by john wall knowing exactly what he wanted out of that possession thompson gets cut off by cousins mays will try a triple of his own and it's dotson with a rebound kentucky by 12. we're down to 7 20. crossover by wall to kick out miller will try another three cousins look at those hands man he's going to have 20 rebounds before this thing's over i'll say it again he will be the biggest load to try to handle in the ncaa tournament more of a low than aldrich more of a load than jackson and onuaku anyone else you can put in that conversation around the rim on a neutral floor this guy is going to be the most difficult one to defend and keep off the glass wall got his man in the air gets it back to cousins on the low block he'll get it out dodson same spot for three got it and it all starts with demarcus cousins brad his strength on the basketball because he had a lot of contact to fight through just to get the pass off tennessee's with a bunch of trouble biggest lead for kentucky today hobson three-pointer short cousins another rebound outlet to miller three on one love dotson a 13-2 run by kentucky and they're doing it to the 13th best team in the country hobson somebody's got to shoot for tennessee but they can't find it and demarcus cousins has become a rebounding machine here in the semifinal game if demarcus cousins smells the least bit of fear he's got you and he might be sniffing it just a little right now soda like a shark we've called him everything else a really big shark they're all compliments everybody hitting the deck trying to save that basketball it'll be tennessee ball when we come back but right now it's kentucky's game as we go to break wildcats 58 volunteers 41. espn's exclusive presentation of the sec tournament on abc brought to you by ing your number find it at ing yournumber.com and under armor visit under armor.com to see the full line of the world's most technical performance apparel and footwear those guitars will be making some sweet music in a few years and mike teasdale making some sweet music right here takes the pass and throws it down in illinois trying to knock off the number one seed in the big ten ohio state and work on their own seeding in the ncaa tournament what if illinois won that and minnesota beat purdue demarcus cousins we've seen his moves we've seen his moves but then we've seen his basketball and it has been something else in this second half defensively on the other end offensively muscling blocking shots as i said he's been a rebounding machine another double-double his 19th of the year and as jimmy said he is a man he's been the man and that's 58-41 with just under five minutes remaining in the ball game brady's a great teammate i think that's the first thing that john wall and patterson and bledsoe would say about demarcus cousins they love playing with him because he's going to bring it for the most part every time he's on the floor he's a like a likable guy off the floor his strength is something that is just mammoth and notice out of respect for him i made sure he knew i was going to describe him as shrek before the game he said i like that yes sir i like that absolutely he's blue instead of green though he's a handful of what he is nice second pass down to hall kenny hall slams it home tennessee downs 15. can they put a run together in the last four and a half minutes kentucky's not going to let him if at all possible they'll use as much clock as is necessary i don't see it happening because i think tennessee looks to be like a tired team and that's another reason they proved himself to be the third best team overall in the sec this year and because of the divisional play that the sec still has tennessee had to play on thursday he should have been rewarded and only have to play on friday like kentucky head through to open the turn that's a good point that's some fresh legs there by patrick patterson as he kept that ball alive and it's a fresh 35 seconds with under four minutes to go check in with janine well brad during that last timeout coach calipari told his wildcats guys i'll say it again we are playing to win by if you see a shot you take it cousins went down gets back defensively though trying to block the shot he intimidated tatum on the drive and now the jump ball is going to go to kentucky [Applause] both teams scrapping for all their worth but as jimmy said the fresher teams were in the white and might have another technical here and we do [Applause] might be on demarcus cousins thought i saw a 1-5 or maybe we've got a double technical again if that's the case we might have seen the last dewayne chisholm [Applause] well we'll check it we'll let you know when we come back double technical foul with 333 remaining john calipari still sketching down there with a 15 point lead with three and a half to go as doug sermons and tony green two of our officials are over at the scorers table we're trying to sort out what we believe to be a double technical now here's what happened at the previous possession melvin goins looks like maybe an elbow went into the midsection of demarcus cousins who went down and then got back up and went back to play defense see demarcus hit the deck and then he hopped back up after the turnover went down on the other end tried to block the shot and then he and goins had a little bit of jawing going on so we're going to have doug sermons come over and talk to jimmy because i want to hear this one what we think we have is a double technical and we've got 333 remaining i'm just going to wait it out until jimmy tells us what it all boils down to jimmy's taking more notes than he has in the last month of the season [Music] and tony green's telling john calipari and bruce pearl the same thing on the far side of the court [Music] [Applause] bruce and john are very calm they're players bunched up on the court together and they're still talking about it jimmy's writing an autobiography and i think we're just about ready to hear what he wrote down all right partner a lot of stuff that you don't see every every ball game brad first of all they're right you can go back on the monitor and check for a flagrant live ball foul which is what going's committed on demarcus cousins with the forearm all right goings is going to be ejected for that flagrant foul he's gone now demarcus cousins reacted to the play of being elbowed in the midsection and got into a jawing session with goins so both players were assessed a technical kentucky will get to shoot two foul shots because of the flagrant foul on goins and resume possession of the basketball a lot to work through there but the officials because they went to the monitor on the first dead ball that happened after the incident they do the right thing they go to the monitor and this is what's in check right here watch 21. bam right to the midsection that is a flagrant live ball technical foul automatic ejection they did a good job of cleaning this up that's not the issue and there's a join between demarcus cousins and he's directing it towards goins and it's hard not to react to that if you're demarcus cousins so demarcus cousins good job partner at the free-throw line where he struggled all day and maybe justly gets that one to fall in meanwhile they're still telling melvin goins that he's got to get goings two free throws by cousins and he is going i said in the first half when you sign a scholarship offer from tennessee part of it is you have a strong dislike for kentucky and vice versa when you sign on for kentucky but right now both coaches need to make sure they're in the ears of their kids and say we will not finish this game without class get control of yourself and let's finish this thing off you can play hard but we don't need pacquiao and claudi before this one's over that one's later tonight and cheap shots to the midsection tennessee is in chase mode now defensively kentucky's just going to spread it and it's hard to chase john wall and eric bledsoe bobby mays is trying to behind the back wall to the rack got it it is hard to chase john wall and eric bledsoe [Applause] it's trying to bottle up the jet stream all you're going to do is find out that there's still a vapor trail and at the end of the trail the finger roll you know what's very impressive about that bobby mays was icing john wall to keep him on that side of the floor and it is so difficult to bring the ball to the middle of the floor when you're being iced and john wall just did it and demarcus cousins now trying to find the range from the free-throw line has he's hit six free throws in the game three in a row now he's got 18 points another double-double for the big guy playing his best game so far in this sec tournament after a slow start yesterday his second half was good his entire game today has been good remember janine telling us that john calipari told his guys i want to win this game by 25. mike got a shot at it he's got him by 21 right now the rubber match is snapping in the favor of the wildcats right now wall again the kick out this time to patterson and now bledsoe [Applause] clears the glass again they'll have to readjust his headband check the tears in his eyes 15th rebound to go with a big game defensively and on offense and now we're going to see john calipari clear the bench and you're going to see everybody in blue at bridgestone arena on their feet because kentucky is going to the championship game tomorrow in two minutes right now we go to john saunders [Applause] well brad we'll check in on another team that wears blue as well duke shire's gonna knock down a three from the corner here as you can see they are struggling against miami right now starting to open up the lead by 15. illinois over ohio state that would help illinois seeding and rhode island probably knocked out of the tournament back here all kentucky with just under two minutes to play [Applause] you know you want to talk about capping off a sensational ball game if you're john wall how about this one he can take the basketball anywhere he wants to take it anytime he wants to take it i used to scout in the nba boy that's one of the first things i look for in a future point guard can he take the basketball when he wants to and when he has to and john wall can do both his day is done but not his weekend he'll be here with us tomorrow afternoon on abc john hood at the free-throw line freshman knocks down his two free throws for some guys that don't get a lot of work get some late work here for kentucky and how about that score 26 points might get worse and a foul on kenny hall and hall will foul out without one well you don't want to fill out your bracket until you spend selection sunday with espn starts things off with sportscenter at six providing wall-to-wall coverage of the brackets at seven o'clock would join the game day guys and dick by tal then at nine reggie miller versus the new york knicks presented by levi's part of our critically acclaimed 30 for 30 series so a full night of basketball sunday on espn and that committee right now absorbing all the information sliding teams maybe from the you know the fourth 4c to the first four seed and they go through that s line format and it's a lot of stuff happening i think rhode island back here is going to be done i think they're going to slide to the end of this line and look at mississippi state right now they've got a chance to do this if they win that next semifinal game from the standby to on the plane that's what's at stake for the bulldogs coming up well tennessee will be in the tournament obviously but their sec season will end here today they'll be 25 and eight and we'll see how their seating goes and brad you and i both know tennessee is going to be a handful in that tournament absolutely they didn't play their best today kentucky had a lot to do with it but you got to remember tennessee the only team since 2002 to take down a number one team and a number two team in the same season that's how good these guys are and a foul on deandre liggins our ing player of the game i don't think there was any doubt wizard 19 points 15 rebounds after a first half yesterday where it wasn't any fun the second half yesterday was and both halves today were skyler mcbee at the free-throw line and this is just a matter now what the final score is going to be marcus cousins flipped the switch at the right time because over the previous three ball games demarcus cousins 21 points and only three offensive rebounds and big fella went to work today final 120. nice to get a little extra rest as well for all those starters for kentucky couple minutes over there on the bench they'll go to the locker room in the press conference after this and then they can get ready for tomorrow either mississippi state or vandy perry stevenson that's a big round of applause because he's a senior and he's been through the lows and now he's part of the highs for kentucky senior out of lafayette louisiana his first two points of the day trying to make it a three-point play and comes off the wool ridge on the rebound we're down to the final minute and it is all kentucky they had a 13-point lead at halftime tennessee made a run at him got it down to single digits and then kentucky ran away to hide pearl nice move on the baseline doesn't get it and hood with a rebound at tennessee i i think they're still going to track in to be a four seed and that ncaa tournament bracket on sunday had they won this game i think they would have been a lock for a three and they won the entire tournament they could have moved up to a two but they're still going to be difficult to handle no matter where they end up they are the number one seed and they'll be there at one o'clock eastern tomorrow noon central time here in nashville against either the bulldogs or the commodores that's our second game so you might want to switch over to espn watch some more basketball head to the refrigerator in a hurry whatever you want to do and we'll be back for the second game shortly we're in the final 20 seconds of this one tennessee throws it away john saunders and steve laven will be back in the studio in about 21 seconds john and level get you up to date on the upsets the teams that were supposed to win and did which is the case right here and what is still in store for us this afternoon and tonight but right now all the blue in this building has been waiting all week to see if their cats could get to the title game they have final score kentucky 74 tennessee 45. kentucky is 31 and two tennessee drops to 25 and eight and now they'll wait until tomorrow night to find out where they're going to play in the ncaa kentucky will still hold out hope that maybe they would not only be a number one seed but the overall number one seed and now after all the pushing and shoving and talking you see the sportsmanship between two teams that aren't crazy about each other but when all is said and done they both played as hard as they could one team was just better today and there aren't too many better than number 11. carter when john calipari was hired the expectations were when an sec championship they did it get to the sec tournament championship game and win that they've got a chance get a number one seed and win the national title i don't know if that's going to happen or not the number one seed is in their back pocket but they look like a team that can win it all let's check in with jeanine congratulations to coach calipari and demarcus cousins coach considering you guys looked a tiny bit flat at times yesterday what did you take away from this performance today well they're getting ready for the ncaa tournament and we have to start understanding the first five minutes of the game and you got to sustain effort you know demarcus played his butt rebounded he had a presence he even smiled today trying to get him to just smile yeah have fun i mean he's having he should be having a ball there's not a better big man out there there no i'll say this there's a few that can play with him now he just got to bring it every night he was terrific today tempers flared a couple of times during the game is it a fine line between 18 and 19 year old kids that are still learning how to act they know how to act now like my own children i'll discipline them i'll do it within i'm not going to embarrass anybody a lot of times they end up embarrassing themselves but it's because they're young kids they're all good kids i mean there's no one here that i i don't want as a son or one in my home so but we do some immature things let me say that well and you definitely want them on your team i know that congratulations coach demarcus congratulations on a big effort from you you had a couple of games where you were a little bit quiet other teams double teamed you and all how were you able to make more of an impact today well i just tried to come in and play with a high energy i've been struggling lately because my energy been low and that's that's bad on my part but i just try to come out tonight have a better energy all right well congratulations we'll see you down the road that road will be tomorrow for the championship game against either the mississippi state bulldogs or the commodores of vanderbilt all kentucky john calipari's team runs away from the volunteers in this first semifinal this afternoon 74-45 we'll see you back here shortly for our second matchup of the day right now back to john saunders in the studio john
