my favorite engine the Hemi and this is my personal 528 let's get it started wow wow I think it's crazy man this is crazy I love it [Music] welcome back to Nick's garage a little muscle car an engine building shop where Good Things Come Together as usual the place is full to the rafters with Gorgeous examples of classic American Muscle [Music] the dino room today Nick is continuing testing with a very special personal project a 528 cubic inch Hemi that he's built into a beast foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] results with this engine but the tests he's about to perform will surprise even the most experienced engine builder hi my name is Nick and welcome to my shop all right I just want to tell you guys I'm back in the dining room with my 528 Hemi 9426 a 528 this is a personal V8 engine that I built from accumulating pieces for such a long time it is a 528 with a flat tap on our dollar camshaft with the 625 CFM carburetors and we made subtest a few days ago with the headers last week with the headers the big Hemi made some incredible power and insane torque I did it I think we hit it I think we hit it yes yes we did yes okay six season 57. wow this is a torque monster yes now this is a third party yes but I wanted to put manifolds yes exhaust models on a 528 cubic inch you know I know we're gonna lose power torque and whatever we're the headers with the same carburetors with the all the same setup except for the manifolds we did 660 torque foot pots of torque at 4 000 RPMs and we pulled out a 614 horsepower at 6000 RPM but the question that's on Nick's mind today is how much power and torque will these beautiful exhaust manifolds cost the 528 Hemi I don't know so let's see what we did with the exhaust manifolds so I'm Gonna Get It Started warm it up and then let's do some testing [Music] foreign Supply me the oil pump and the timing chain on this engine and there was a few other items also but you know what I got to give him a big handy they'll help me out they have good products and I use them all the time and by the way the lifters are in here or made in USA by knowing okay I can't wait to get it started and let's see how it goes put on air fuel ratio okay we got a set of carbs here that were restored by Donnie orky in Ontario cortis Ontario and of course my favorite engine the Hemi and this is my personal 528 okay let's get it started next start your engine okay no joke let's go foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign foreign fast test just to heat sink the block and then uh after that we'll start testing but right now let's just make one quick test yeah you know I like to get you all uh hot I like to get the water temperature maybe close to 180 but I need to compare the water temperature like our last notes were uh on the coolant or should I say the water temperature was at 155 so we're going to start testing away from 55 and later on later on I want to run the temperature of 180 degrees Fahrenheit like the way it runs in the car then we'll do a test on that too and see how it goes so you know if this is going to get installed in the car it'll probably be with manifolds uh so all I'd say do it that way we got oil temperature also hooked up it's right here our coolant temperature is uh 163 degrees Fahrenheit and you see it on the lighter you can see that the number is in blue damage is still cold so once you get a green we'll get going when everything turns green we're ready to go [Music] [Music] all right I'm happy that the uh rear seal is not leaking and if anybody wanted to know these are aluminum silver heads they are not cast iron I've had it for quite a few years I had them I had a bulb job done on them nothing very special I installed Double Springs so I could rev up to 6500 no no issues whatsoever everyone unfortunately running electronic distributor sounds good and I've got vacuum for power brakes check this out let's put this on idle you guys take a look we should have 15 16 inches of vacuum at less RPM let me bring it to 900 950. [Music] there we go here we go what about a thousand RPM 15 inches of vacuum so if this engine would be installed on a car with power brakes or have no issues [Music] I'm going to bring it to 155 degrees Fahrenheit so I can compare it like our previous test with the headers and one thing I'm happy for like you know sometimes you look at an engine when you have it running on the dynamometer you might look at the rear seal all the time like I always do and once in a while it's a hit and miss like I might build 10 engine so you're probably going to get one that's going to leak oil to the rear seal unfortunate this one's perfect and I'm happy for that and all I'm looking for right now is to get it tested see what kind of power and torque it makes with my manifolds on this 528 and the way you guys are going to see it here is the way it's going to be seen at Motorama and here we go I'm ready put on the fan George okay I'm just gonna make our first test to get the heatsink in the block then after that we're going to do some more testing and we'll take it from there foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] wow wow [Music] wow I'm pretty I'm pretty impressed I'm really impressed air fuel ratio did not change whatsoever okay torque we made 660 before right now we made 637 at 4 300 RPM so we lost some torque we went from 660 to 637 which is 23 foot pots of torque we've lost with the manifold horsepower we made 615 roughly we're at 605 607 we lost eight horsepower that's it that's not bad at all we're talking about a 5.8 here this Engine versus headers of uh two and two inch 1 8 versus our exhaust manifolds take it from there okay this is incredible man why would you want to put headers that's my opinion from what I see here there's not a big big difference from what I can see why would you want to put headers on this big monster you know it's making way over 600 it's making what 637 footballs are torque at 4 300 and we still have 6.7 horsepower with six to one hundred you know what we only lost like 23 footballs of torque horsepower we lost about eight horsepower now you can imagine those manifolds you guys well as a matter of those are puny compared to the headers but anyways you know what with a big Cam and uh with the two fours on it I think it's crazy man this is crazy I love it okay I'm gonna make one more test back to back so you guys ready here we go put the O2 sensor back on here we go [Music] wow we got the same horsepower back we got the same horsepower back 613 wow this this is very impressive now that we now that we this is very impressive no this is freaking me out here now here we go here we go this is too much all right I gotta write this down we did uh here we did 612 horsepower 5900 RPM okay which we did like 615 with the headers and now with the torque we did 660 at 4 000 with the headers and here now that that block is heat sink six 45 at 4200 RPM so we lost 15 pounds we lost 50 foot pumps of torque with the exhaust manifolds and the horsepower just a couple of horses that's it you know what this engine is going to stay with the manifolds we don't need headers no this is something really good okay so we rented 155 degrees Fahrenheit right now I want to run it at 180 degrees Fahrenheit because someone told me you have to heat up the engine to get more power so now I know where I stand let's get it to 185 I'm sorry 180 degrees Fahrenheit and do one more test and after all the air fuel rats was perfect I'm not going to touch the timing I know exactly where it is actually I played with it this is the best spot that's The Sweet Spot we want to call it and uh let's do one more test at 180 degrees Fahrenheit and we'll take it from there okay let's warm it up now I'm gonna let it warm up George okay let me go take a look I'm gonna shut the fan listen to noises so let's go [Music] [Music] okay let's get the engine hot actually I gotta put the thermostat up okay in a sec okay so I just adjusted the thermostat to get at 180 degrees Fahrenheit so I can do one more test and people tell me you know I read some comments running harder like the way it runs in the in the engine bay so we're not going to run it no more at 155 we're gonna run it up 180. so I'll let it build up some heat then we'll take it from there and while we're talking about building up heat take a look at what was going on in the exhaust collection box behind the engine during that last test there's so much heat blast coming out of those pipes that it's cooking the carbon off the inside of the chimney [Music] okay let's see now come on let's go to 180 let's go to 180. [Music] mine is on rolls out 178 degrees Fahrenheit let's get the water to 180. here we go 175 176. cooler down and I'm ready okay here we go foreign let's see what we got okay here we go now this is a test 180 degrees Fahrenheit actually uh there's no change 155 to 180. we pulled out the same numbers 603 horsepower at 61. torque is up at 6 30. 33 at 4 300. so running at 155 or 180 made no difference so there you have it you guys it's pretty good so I can still test my Motors 180 degrees Fahrenheit you know I'm very very impressed I'm very impressed these models really work on the Hemi and you know what surprised me the most is that it's not a 426 it's a 528 wow that is something foreign [Music] you know I had a 426m in the past that I ran headers versus exhaust manifolds and I lost like 20 horsepower 22 horsepower and maybe about 25 foot-pounds of torque but now we've got a 528 right here headers and of course now I got manifolds just wanted to tell you guys with the headers each one is that I had the same engine same carburetors same air fuel ratio I pulled out a 660 foot-pounds of torque 660 at 4 000 RPM and then at horsepower I pulled out a 614 at 6 000 RPM so today with the manifolds the same setup this is what surprised me the most at 4200 RPMs we pulled out a 645 foot parts of torque all we lost was 15 pounds of torque horsepower 612 at 59. wow so we lost a couple of horsepower now would you install headers on this engine I'm very impressed I'm very impressed and you know what I'm really glad that manifolds are staying on this and you know what this is what engine deserves I just can't believe that the bigger engine wants Less storage less power than the 426 but these manifolds are nicely designed they work great I have them coming out with a two and a half inch pipe right here Outlet just like most people have in a car these are ceramic coated exhaust manifolds and we have no oil leak in the rear seal so I'm happy the only stand I got here is my gauge which is right here but that doesn't matter that doesn't matter that's my gauge but the rear seal nothing whatsoever yes am I happy with this you better believe it wow carburetors work fine the sugar is working fine exhaust is working ball train hydraulic flat top it what more can I ask for you know I don't know I'm very surprised myself that at 528 didn't lose much power at all anyways you know what I'm proud of it I'm happy and it's staying the way it is [Music] now I always start the engine I try to listen to any engine losing before I take the engine off the dyno I'm gonna start it a lot of idle and if it all goes well off it goes [Music] oh look at everything okay not bad for hydraulic Flats at the time okay let's go see [Music] and so another magnificent muscle car engine is ready for delivery from Nick's garage [Music] but this time Nick is delivering to himself he's going to pack this engine up and drive it down the trans-canada highway to Toronto so he can share it with all his friends at the Motorama Auto Show and after the show we're going and you guys if you look down below the video we have a whole bunch of merchandise that you guys can buy so whatever you like buy it love it wear it and enjoy it and help spread the word the next garage and if you have some time check out our patreon page we have extra content and you guys can watch it and take it from there and we'll see you next time [Music] oh [Music] [Music]
