for</font> thousands of miles<font color="#CCCCCC"> Viet</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> Cong forces</font> would emerge<font color="#E5E5E5"> from the underground</font> fortresses to launch lightning-fast hit-and-run raids<font color="#E5E5E5"> before</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> melting away</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> to</font> the relative safety<font color="#CCCCCC"> of the</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> tunnels</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">before the might of the American war</font> machine could be turned against them <font color="#E5E5E5">knowing</font><font color="#CCCCCC"> that they stood little chance</font> against the<font color="#E5E5E5"> US forces on the open ground</font> <font color="#CCCCCC">these kind of guerrilla raids became the</font> <font <font color="#E5E5E5">to combat this threat the US Army tried</font> flooding the tunnels or using gas to kill or flush out those sheltering within however the sheer size of the tunnels combined with ingenious but simple water locks<font color="#E5E5E5"> meant that these</font> attempts had little success<font color="#CCCCCC"> the tunnels</font> were spread<font color="#CCCCCC"> over several against unarmed</font> civilians<font color="#E5E5E5"> and poorly trained partisans</font> they stood little chance against veteran <font color="#CCCCCC">Red Army units</font><font color="#E5E5E5"> one of the most infamous</font> <font color="#E5E5E5">of these units was the 36 Grenadier</font> division of the waffen-ss<font color="#CCCCCC"> the unit was</font> originally formed of convicted
