hey guys today we're talking about five situations where you could use a compressor pedal instead of another pedal now first I want to thank Brian Wampler from Whomper pedals for sending me the mini ego compressor pedal that inspired this video now the first pedal of a compressor could replace is reverb what happens if you use reverb a lot you use it like sustain maybe hit chords and you like that reverb to keep it kind of big and splashy without that reverb it's going to be a little dry doesn't a whole lot of sustain it wouldn't be very big if your song was dependent on just hitting that one chord you can see where you'd be in a pickle turning on the compressor gives that all that sustain right back to you see very nice another situation you can use compressor for is a boost so we're using the run 20 with the overdrive set pretty low and we'll go ahead and hit the boost pedal here's a boost pedal to drive the amp and again without the boost pedal go ahead and hit that wall poor compressor and watch what's happening [Music] again giving it all that sustain and pushing the amp over giving you more overdrive a fuller sound definitely cool now one of the biggest uses for a compressor is sustain if you might be in a situation where you're switching guitars at a gig and without switching your amp settings one guitar is just too thin or it doesn't have the humbucker sound versus the single coil sound and you can use a compressor to go ahead and even that out and I would use the compressor to make one guitar sound as full and as rich and dynamic as another guitar now the other thing you can do is use it like a piano see a pianist would have a foot pedal to add sustain you could do the same thing let's say you're at the end of the song and you're just going so that's what it would sound like normally let's go ahead and add the compressor at the very end of that [Music] so now you add in the end look how long you can hold that cord it's almost infinity right and what's nice about that is again it gives you different dynamics one of the things that I like is also you can hold a note for much longer look at this note without the compressor now let's add the compressor back in you can see it makes a big difference and is a nice way to kind of even things out now another pedal you can use a compressor instead of is an overdrive it's not very common it's really something I like to do I love compressor pedals when I kind of turn all the knobs of ten and just kind of use it to push the amp now the amps running clean right now so you get kind of this kind of clean sound but what I'll do is I'll just push the compressor use a pickup that's just a little bit high high gain just a little bit of a bite and I basically just go for it other things I see a lot of guitar players use is it EQ pedal to fix a problem that really a compressor is better suited for if you're trying to stop the low frequencies from overtaking the highs or vice versa a compressor will do that more efficiently and better than most EQ pedals for example look at this guitar I have set it up on the amp and sounds great but those highs aren't really coming through and it's really not very even because I really can't hear everything across the board so I might use an EQ pedal to kind of help thicken that up a compressor sometimes does the same thing without trying so hard we get that kind of thicker low-end and we still get the chime of the high end so one of the things that we didn't touch about compressors is they're really good if you were really used to a tube amp and you're playing a salt stamp or a PA system and you're not getting that fluid feeling that you like from a tube amp I use a compressor all the time to make it feel more like a tube amp that's one of the things that I really notice about compressor right away is it has this feeling that feels really responsive to me so if I put it in front of Saul State I'm definitely feeling more at home like I would be if I was using my to amplifier now is it a perfect pedal by no means not and is it for everyone probably not I find the only way to buy a compressor is to really try a bunch of them like I was trying OverDrive's and finding the one that that has that sound that I'm looking for you really need to try them and see hey which one kind of has that tone I'm looking for they are not just this thing that you add to your sounds sometimes they can be the sound there's a lot of things you have to take into consideration if you guys liked this video you can hit subscribe to be notified when there's more every week and as always thank you for your time and know your gear [Music]
