hello everyone welcome back to my channel if you don't know me my name is Kaylee and I am a brand new YouTuber I am a business owner an entrepreneur a podcaster a dog mom a Londoner a sushi addict all of the things yada yada yada and today I'm going to be sharing with you five lessons that I have learned when I took the jump from being in conventional employment towards being my own boss for the very first time as a fully freelance entrepreneur self-employed whatever you want to call it I always get asked this question I always get asked like what should I be prepared for when I quit my full-time job what things should I look out for what things should I be prepared for and honestly I don't think anybody can really prepare you for this journey but here are five lessons that I bet you haven't heard before I've really tried to make these not too cliche things that will hopefully help you and prepare you if you about to make that jump lesson number one your journey will not look linear your journey will not look like my journey it will not look like Oprah's Journey it will not look like Beyonce's Journey Taylor Swift's Journey makeup by Mario's Journey anyone that you look up to your journey will not look like their Journey your journey is going to be full of real high highs and it's going to be full of real low lows as well and I think that's something to really bear in mind it's not going to look like a constant upwards trajectory not going to look like one booking leads to two booking leads to 100 bookings leads to 100 sales it is going to look like slow Seasons it is going to look like times where you're like wait have I made the right decision here it is going to look hard and sticky and amazing and wonderful and all of the things but it absolutely will not be linear in my own Journey I've had some months where I have not made any money and I've also had some weeks where I've made 21k January I had the biggest earning month that I've had this year and then February I had the lowest it is not just each month building upon each month and each day getting better and better and better when you come out of full-time employment you are coming out of a very solid paycheck and you are going into uncertainty and that is not to put you off at all I'm not saying this to to downplay it being your own boss is the best thing in the world you don't have to ask anybody when you can go on holiday you don't have to tell anybody that you're off sick I remember when I was in retail I had to call like three bosses three different bosses if I wanted a sick day you don't have to do any of that there are so many blessings but there's also a lot of downtime and there's a lot of grit and there is a lot of Blood Sweat and Tears along with all the laughs and the joy as well I think the best thing to bear in mind when you are about to quit your job is that that not every month is going to look better than the last and that not every booking or every sale is going to be better than the last and if you're prepared for that financially prepared with you know Financial forecasts and if you've done your business homework right those months where you're not earning as much won't feel so hard the biggest thing that I want you guys to remember when you're on this journey when you're in your lows is they do not last forever and neither do the highs everything is temporary and I have used this as like a guiding principle in in my entire life if you are going through the hardest time of your life right now it is temporary and if you're going through like the happiest time in business it is also temporary and I think if you use that as a guiding principle the months where you're not earning much or the months where it's really really hard or the months where you're burns out it's temporary I think the best advice that I can give you and this is a little bit cliche is to not compare your journey to anybody else's Journey if somebody is absolutely killing on social media try and reframe that that voice that tells you but why am I not killing it into a voice that tells you if they're killing it I can also do that too I always use like my competitors wins as proof and data that actually I can do that too okay lesson number two planning planning planning planning is going to be your best friend planning for every single outcome I'm a data girly I'm a business girly I'm a strategy girly and a lot of my community a lot of the the students that I have do not know the importance of learning your business before anything else a lot of their investment goes into learning how to be better artists which is amazing also a lot of your investment and a lot of your time should go on the business side of things because business is what brings you money I see so many makeup artists spend tens of thousands of pounds on their kit your kit is never going to be the thing that gets you booked it's your brain that is so planning planning planning planning planning having a business plan A Financial forecast having a strategy having a plan around your your routines which we're going to get to in a minute but just planning things out and treating your business like it is a business I take examples from the greats I look at like Charlotte Tilbury and and Bobby Brown and even bloody gym shark I look at what they're doing and I base my business on that with the same energy like big business energy I go into it imagining I am the next gym shark imagining I am the next L'Oreal I do the same things that they're doing they have a business plan they have a financial forecast they have quarterly reviews I incorporate all of those things into my business your business will be a direct reflection of the energy that you put into it so if you're going into it and you're like this is a side hustle this is a small business that is the output that you're going to get but if you go into it and you're like I am planning for a multi-million pound business that is the output you're going to get some things that I always do at the very beginning of my year is I do a year budget I do a marketing plan I do a business plan for any new business idea that I have I look at where my investments are going to go I look at individual strategies for all the little things that I'm doing so right now I have an agency that I have just set up just this year I have a business plan for her I have a budget for her I have a financial forecast for her I have a strategy a growth strategy for her these are all of the things that no matter no matter if you haven't even made a single pound yet if you do those things you are giving the same energy that the great the top 1% are giving their businesses and that will equal amazing results lesson number three and this is an important one guys when you quit your job you are coming out of a place where you had structure you had routines you had lunch breaks you had days that you worked and when you go into your own business full-time your life kind of gets thrown up in the air and you have no routine the very first thing that I would do is sit down and prepare your own routine when I'm teaching my students this I call it their CEO routines routines and just structure in general will help you transition into that new role a lot easier so I kind of plan like what time do I get up what time do I want to be at my desk what time do I want to finish work I plan my annual leave I literally plan like if you are a business owner and you do not plan your annual leave you won't take it simple as that I plan my days off I really do enforce some kind of structure so on Tuesdays that's when I do content on Thursdays that's when I do SEO I try and get some kind of loose routine in my diary that I can follow that will ensure that I'm not lost because if you are lost that is the fast track to just procrastinating not getting results not doing anything try and sit down and craft a routine that serves you and that is the important part my routine I'm very very structured I thrive in routine so when I show my students my routine it sometimes boggles their mind my routine should not look anything like your routine because your routine and the way that you work will be based on your own preferences on your you know your family life on how much you actually want to work I work in by Kaye a 9 to5 because I love that I love that structure I love that I know my work days and my work times I love and I thrive in that kind of environment but if the N9 to 5 doesn't work for you if it doesn't serve you if you're a busy mom or if you have like a million things going on it can a little bit like Tim Ferris is with his 4-Hour Work Week the important thing is that it works for you and it gives you results write down a list of all of the things that you want to do in your business things that you haven't really had a chance to do maybe you've not had the time things like content uh content creation days SEO days networking write a list of all the things that you want to do and then write a list of all the things that you have to do to keep your business moving to keep it running like admin like emails like like systems combine those two lists and then what I want you to do is make families families of like for like tasks so what I mean by that is kind of all the social media tasks Bunch them together all of the money tasks Bunch them together and then take them they're now called your blocks and start putting them in your diary start putting them in your calendar and that is going to form some kind of routine for you that is a great great starting point I actually have loads of podcast episodes on this that I'll put down below and that will also help you if you are interested in routines because I would say with full full certainty I would not get done I would not be as productive as I am if I didn't have a really good CEO routine that serves me okay lesson number four and this is a really important one for your happiness Implement some boundaries right now in fact out of all of these four lessons this needs to be the one that you pay the most attention to if you have no boundaries with yourself with your customers with your clients you will start to resent your business real quick I used to be a bridal makeup artist I still am I still do a few Brides a year and I actually around 2018 2019 era I started to really dislike Bridal it turns out I loved Bridal I Just Had No Boundaries I was traveling Here There and Everywhere I was traveling hours for my Brides I was letting them contact me at all times of the day I Had No Boundaries boundaries are the thing that will keep you happy they will keep you safe and they will keep you sane some really really good boundaries that you can and if you are mobile if you are somebody who is doing a service is how far are you happy to travel for that service for me I was traveling like one to two hours and I figured out that actually I'm so much more happier if I served the clients closest to me so now I don't really travel very far my travel maximum is 30 minutes and that there singlehandedly improved my happiness around work you should have boundaries around your rates around how much you charge because nothing will make you resent your job more than getting out of bed for a rate it's also really important to have boundaries with yourself like for me I have a tendency to overwork myself so for me I have boundaries about when I come off the computer what days that I work making sure that I don't do any work on the weekends I have email boundaries so you know email office hours that keep me not glued to my emails all the time it is so important that you have boundaries and it can be really difficult to know where to start when it comes to making your boundaries so one place that I would start is to get on your notes up get on your notes up right now now and make a list of all the things that make you slightly unhappy in your business this could be around rates it could be around the type of clients that you serve it can be around the hours that you work anything that brings you unhappiness write a list and then create a boundary for every single one of those I now only work within 30 minutes my travel time is 30 minutes max anything more than that and I say no to that client I refer them to someone else or I break my boundary and my happiness things like rates if you are unhappy with getting out of bed for less than x amount of money it shows you that you do need to raise your rates your boundaries can really really help you just be happier at work and when you are going into this fulltime you do not want to become resentful of what you are doing and here's the thing right there are loads of things we can love our job with our full heart and soul but there are going to be things that you're not going to be happy doing there are going to be people that you're not happy working with that doesn't mean that you hate your job that doesn't mean that it's time to pack it in it's just time to implement some boundaries around those things that keep you safe and sane trust me you're going to want to do that one okay final lesson knowing the difference between busy and productive when you go into becoming Your Own Boss when you go into owning your own business fully full-time it is very easy to add lots of things to your to-do list and that is a fast track to burnout also it's very unproductive I listened to a podcast I think it was the manifestation based podcast in 2020 and she said that actually 80% of our to-do list is fluff is literally fluff it's useless we want to be busy when we're in business but it is knowing whether the things that you are doing are actually productive or not so a really useful thing that you can do and there's a lot of lists in this video and I apologize for that is to look at your current to-do list and ask yourself does this task make me money if it doesn't it might be fluff it might be useless it might be something that we've added to our to-do list to be busy rather than productive I think one of the biggest pieces of advice that I can give anybody who is just looking to do this full-time for themselves is to really understand that your biggest biggest biggest asset in your business is not money it is your time and being really really conscious where that time is going whether the time that you are putting in each day is actually bringing you results it's okay to do fluffy tasks sometimes we have to do fluffy tasks sometimes things can come from the fluffy tasks but time in your business is so so limited there's a difference between spending time in your business and spending time on your business when you are physically working in your business it's actually quite hard to grow your business and scale it but when you are working on it that is when you need to be productive right that is when you're going to get the growth that is when you're going to get the scale that is when you're going to hit that next level that you're looking for so those are my Five Lessons let me know in the comments below whether you've heard any of these before I really really tried to like dig deep and really think about the things that I actually wasn't prepared for the things that I have learned from being full-time in my business for let me think how long have I been full-time now for 5 years I think yeah 5 years so I really tried to dig deep with this I really tried to think about the things that I had no idea nobody told me about and nobody really talks about so let me know if you actually knew any of these and if any really resonated with you I hope you
