that was our first like taste of oh you can save up money hey everyone i hope you're having a good day today i want to talk about a few things that i do not regret spending money on also a little housekeeping note it's raining welcome to summer in the south i recently posted a video about things i wish i knew in my 20s about money and just some regrets that i had mistakes that i had made and i really loved the way that everyone responded to that videos sharing their mistakes but also championing each other and cheering each other on what a great little community we have here on youtube and if you're new here hi my name is lydia i make videos on frugal and simple living and i would love for you to join this community by hitting that subscribe button i do have a lot of regrets as far as money mistakes i made in my 20s i do have things that i spent money on that i don't regret and let's talk about those so the first thing is concerts i went to so many concerts when we were newlyweds when we were a young married couple with no kids when we were college students we went to a lot of shows and some of my favorite memories from living in atlanta is going to shows going to see concerts live and there are artists that i love that would see every single time they went into town the shows were always great they were always at really awesome venues so atlanta doesn't really have a reputation for the arts but i'm telling you they have some incredible venues there some of my favorite places to go see shows and so i spent a lot of money going to concerts there's something so incredible about live music and being there with people who love the same artist you do and singing along but there are also fringe memories that come with it and i was thinking about this the other day and i was telling my husband like do you remember that time that my friend trisha and i went to see the mountain goats we went to that indian restaurant and the waiter thought she was super cute so he gave her a free nine and then the guy outside on the street offered to buy her shoes it was such a weird experience but it's not just the concert you remember it's the other things and i'm rambling now but it's okay one of my favorite memories from actually being pregnant with my oldest son was going to see the weepies at the variety playhouse eating on the porch of the vortex and just having this like last weekend as young free people before our baby came okay so my next thing is going to see live theater so i have always been a fan of theater i studied theater in college i had a theater scholarship until i changed my major and i just love live theater not just i particularly love musicals um but i also love a good play a good one woman show and so i went to see a lot of broadway across america touring company shows when we were living in atlanta to see hamilton in new orleans last year and that was an incredible experience but while we were living in atlanta we got to see wicked and phantom and spring awakening which was an experience love the energy that live theater creates i love the atmosphere i just love going to see a great show and so i have no regrets number three is going to museums so while we're in atlanta wow i miss atlanta so much the more i think about it we had a membership to the high museum of art and every time they had a new exhibit we were there and we got to see some incredible things and this is what i love about art museums is that they would bring in these exhibits that i wouldn't get to experience otherwise like getting to see monet's water lilies getting to see some famous degas getting to see the terracotta soldiers these are not experiences i would have had otherwise but because they brought in these traveling exhibits we got to have experiences and see new things and see a new perspective also if you're ever in atlanta they have an amazing folk art exhibit that you will love if you get to go it was wonderful and so so having a membership to that was money well spent in my opinion and i wish i lived a little bit closer because i would go now do you notice a theme here that these are all experiences and not things that i just bought for the sake of buying i have a lot of regrets about things i bought i have a lot of regrets on putting things on credit cards my next thing is trips now jason and i did not do a lot of traveling when before we had kids because we couldn't afford it but there were some things that we did do we went to the mountains a lot because it was just a straight shot north and we could get a cheap hotel and hang out at the national park and it didn't cost very much we also saved up and went to new york city in 2010 and that was a trip we paid cash for we weren't even in the like debt-free sphere yet we weren't working a budget or anything like that but that was our first like taste of oh you can save up money and we actually ended up having extra money when we came home because we had kind of over budgeted and not spent as much as we thought we would and that was a great trip to new york we did not see any shows while we were there because theater tickets are expensive uh that's why i love broadway across america because those tickets are way way cheaper and you still get to see a high quality show we did see the king tut exhibit when it was in times square and it was wonderful and we just got to be there we went to see all the touristy things which i actually like that about travel i am cheesy you can make fun of me all you want but i love the kitschy hokey silly tourist things that other people hate like those tourist photos those family photos where you like stand together and then they superimpose something in the picture i'm here for it yeah you want to take my picture and then charge me 65 for it sold i'm still a sucker for those every single time when we budget for vacation now we budget for cheesy family photos that are going to be taken hold on i think i have some right here for you here is one when we went with my mother-in-law to the smoky mountains and we went to dixie stampede and i am pregnant with riles and i paid for this picture and i would do it again finally my last thing is books and yes i know you can get books free from the library i go to the library every week because i read three books a week and i couldn't afford to buy all those books anyway but i will support authors that i love whose work i know i'm gonna love who i have read all the books they've written up until this point i will pay money for their books why because literature is art and i want to support artists it's important for to me that is how i prioritize spending my money even now is buying books and i try to still support independent bookstores in fact a friend of mine shared one on instagram recently it was a lady owned bookstore in chicago ordered some books from them and their prices were very competitive and reasonable so books are something i love buying books from small book shops is something i love it's something i've always enjoyed it's something that i spent money on and it's not something that i regret spending money on also i have no problems buying a book reading a book and then wrapping that book up and giving it to somebody so what are some purchases you made that you just don't regret and you don't care and you enjoy the experience what are some things you buy now that other people are like girl you're spending too much money on that and you don't care because you love it because that's what you're allowed to do because it's your money save on things that you don't care about and spend on things that you do you know i don't care about a lot of things versus cars decorations but i want my feet to be comfortable i want a good cup of coffee i want to read a good book and i want my face to feel nice so i put good moisturizer on it we prioritize the things that matter and we don't care about the things that don't and i'd love to know what are some things you spend money on leave me a comment below thank you for being here that was a weird hand move and i'll see you in my next video
