my name is Aaron Cairo and I'm a professional skateboarder from the San Francisco Bay Area today I'm going to teach you guys five tips to getting better Ollie's so the first thing we're going to talk about and the five tips the first tip is going to be about your body position this is your upper body and where it is a lot of times when you're doing skateboard tricks you look at your feet and you think about your board but you don't think about what's happening up here which can create problems sometimes people lean too far this way you know a lot of times I see people doing always like this I've never seen that just to be honest never seen that but if you had any like question about where you should be you have to be like straight over your board not this way not leaning too far forward not leaning too far forward that way or that way and the basic idea behind this and basically any trick you're going to do is that you want to to the very best of your ability pop kind of straight down and come straight up so in that sense you still have to bend your knees and you have to bend at your waist so you're going to bend down like this or you want to come straight down and straight up you don't want to be leaning with your upper body that way or that way or that way or that way I'll show you what happens if your upper body is too far forward which does occur because a lot of times kids will bend over like this and then that's a very drastic example I don't always jump so far forward but that is what happens anytime you're like this and you're not popping straight down and then up if you're like this well as you pop that way your boards going to go over there so that is step one to better all these proper upper body position pop straight down pop straight up step two to better always is the pop so after you have your upper body in a proper position and you know how to bend down then we're going to learn how to pop so we're going to go over pop as opposed to like jump as opposed to like what a pop is so a pop is when you hit your tail on the ground it's a very fast snap it's just it's also not like super hard a lot of times people concentrate on getting the hardest like snap down with their back foot you can it doesn't necessarily need to be like that it just needs to be enough so you hear the back of the tail you hear it hit on the ground what's going to come up it doesn't have to be this like OH super serious slam so a good way to practice this is just like this that's pop now a jump is like this that's like how much vertical like feet you can get off the ground with both legs now a pop that's a little bit different you see the difference so pop pop pop when it comes to nollie just pop and then the next step would be sliding your foot up more get it more leveled out etc so anyway so that's a bit about the pop that's step two the pop define that brings me to step three the slide what a slide is is when you move your foot like this the thing to know about a slide is that you're not leaving your foot flat on the ground you're not putting your foot here and going like this that's not a slide a slide is where you turn the sole of your shoe ninety degrees and then you drag it up the board up up the board you can even hear that noise that it makes and it's definitely going to do damage to your shoes so expect that you want that to occur the biggest thing I see very brand new skaters doing is they try to ollie without turning their foot like this I try an ollie just like this so that ends up looking kind of like and they're like I can bet I can get it off the ground a little bit but not quite and the the step that they're missing is a real strong slide and as you slide up you're kind of like going like that you almost want to like drag your foot up and then push it forward very strong emphasis on push it forward because that's what's going to get your board to go up and leveled out drag up and leveled out so the timing between that pop and the drag up is so important it's unbelievable pop is second you hear the sound of your tail hitting on the ground you should be dragging your front foot up and then pushing it forward and then down that's step three the most important step of which you can practice by standing here and going like this step three the drag step four is some information about the jump what is a jump why do you jump do you jump is there jump technically a jump is where you crouch down and then come up and bring both feet off the ground now I get it so many questions about this it's crazy like an a lot of the all the videos that I've done it's like do I jump do I need to jump how do I need to jump my answer to this is I think you're concentrating too much on jump think about why didn't they just call it jump why do they call it an ollie it's because it's an ollie not a jump okay I'm going to show you what a jump looks like on a skateboard notice no ollie was completed now I'm going to show you what an ollie looks like on a skateboard different it's different I doubt like the upper body it goes up I'm sure but I debt it doesn't go up super high it's different than a jump it's more of like a I always say teeter-totter motion I think that's something that kind of gets a little bit misunderstood it's because it's either totter is this thing that goes back and forth rocking like that the skateboard pops up and then you basically use your front foot to drag it up and then it goes like that and yeah both feet are in the air the board is in the air I guess you can call that a jump but when you concentrate on jumping and not ollying I think it gives you a very hard time because that I see kids starting to go like this and they're like why I'm Jack maybe I just can't maybe I just can't jump enough but it's not the jump it's the ollie so it's really that motion the timing between hitting your back foot dragging your front foot and bringing it all up into the air so jump and then ollie whoa see I started jumping at the ollie I almost lost control of my ollie just talking about it made me lose the ollie it's just different it's weird I don't really know how to explain it much more than that but I feel like if you concentrate too hard on jumping you won't Ollie learn the steps of an ollie as an ollie and learn to ollie just like when you learn to ollie you'll see the difference it just feels so much more different this and this it's so much different it's it's incredible I don't even know how to begin to describe it to you but I can see how before you learn how to do a real ollie you think oh you just like ollie the board sticks to your feet but it don't so anyways that's step 4 of the ollie the jump I hope it helped you step 5 and without consider one of the most crucial and most difficult parts of the ollie the timing timing basically means what one part of you is doing in relation to another park in other words what your feet are doing in the exact sequence of like not too much time between this and too much time between that and what your board is doing so there's about three things occurring on the Ahly this this and the timing between them if you have the timing off you're only kind of looks like this or that's like sliding too soon the first one was sliding too late and the second one was sliding too soon has to be the exact like the second your tail hits the ground your front foot should just barely be starting dragging up and pop again remember is like it's a pop is not huh and stop that'll happen a lot to it'll be like a pop is down and up so your back foot has to go down and then come up and as your back foot hits the timing is exact exactly the same your front foot should be coming up that board achieve liftoff and then come down so timing fifth tip to better Ollie's most crucial step so keep your body straight get your feet in a good position make sure you're level over the board and make sure when you're bending down you go straight down and come straight up pop hit the tail fast drag your front foot up keep your front foot going forward to level your board out in the air and do some Ollie's those are the
