hebrew word for sabbath we hear this throughout the show is shabbat and so if you just want to take a screenshot right now of the chat and of yourself right up there on the screen and then shoot that to me at brandon brandonrobbinsministry.com um we will we will send you that gift and we'll get you all set up with that so thank you so much all right so we're gonna jump right into our first lesson tonight so one of the things you may not know i may not have noticed in seasons one and two and this has something to do with a quick little scene i mean it's really just a few seconds that happens in episode one of season one where peter comes home or simon sorry simon comes home and i just want you to see this clip and then we'll talk about what happens all right that was it so super quick but what you notice in this scene is that he comes in and he washes his feet and uh you know this is actually something that happens a couple of times throughout the first two seasons where you know somebody comes in and they wash their feet as soon as they enter a room there's a moment where jesus washes his own feet in an episode of season two and and there are a few things that you should know about this practice um foot washing was something that was practiced throughout the middle east mostly because feet were the dirtiest part of the body i mean just think about it kind of this is a a culture of sandals right so your feet every day would be covered in sand and dirt and dust and i mean honestly whatever you stepped in and so it was common in middle eastern culture middle eastern homes to wash your feet when you entered someone's home whether it was your home or somebody else's it was even said that if you washed your feet if your feet were clean then your whole body was clean but there's also a deeper meaning behind foot washing in jewish culture so jewish people believed that they were the image of god so this filth on their feet was something that they believed tarnished that reflection of god and this applies just beyond feet right this is a part of why ceremonial cleansing was such a significant part of jewish culture they believed that in washing themselves clean they were returning themselves to the proper reflection of the image of god that said when i see jesus wash his feet or when i see simon wash his feet i can't help but think ahead to another foot washing moment between the two of them at the last supper right because at the last supper jesus begins to wash simon's feet or peter's feet at that point and peter refuses you know every time i've read this passage i don't know if you've had the same reaction but my natural reaction was to think what are you doing peter like why in the world are you refusing jesus who wants to wash your feet i mean why would you refuse your savior but when you look at other scriptures and you understand how people viewed foot washing you can actually see why he would do this right john the baptist speaks of jesus and says i'm unworthy to even untie his sandals and he's not even talking about washing feet he's just he's not even he's not even worthy to untie jesus sandals and that's because things like untying sandals and washing feet was the work of a slave in the first century and so men at dinners like the last supper they would relax like you know the one that they're having with jesus and and slaves would come and wash their feet and john is saying i'm not even worthy to be jesus's slave i'm not even worthy to be his servant which then gives us a whole new perspective on jesus because when jesus goes around washing his disciples feet around the dinner table he's doing the work of a slave jesus their rabbi isn't just serving them he's being a slave for them he's being a servant for them jesus god chooses to be a slave for us and this is the scandal of the gospel right the king came as a slave god chose to be a slave you have a god who would be a slave for you and so whenever you feel unworthy i just want you to look at how low jesus was willing to go in order to love his disciples this is how much god loves you and i think the question that this this really drives us to is how can we humble ourselves to love other people like jesus has loved us and so there's lesson one tonight about foot washing and something you didn't notice in the first two seasons of the chosen now before we move on to our next lesson like i said i just want to continue to bless you all throughout this night and so um we actually want to do we just want to jump right into another giveaway so we gave away uh the journal for for uh the for season one of the chosen and so now we're going to give away the other journal for season two and uh here is your question if you wanna win this again just write it in the chat and the first person to get the answer right is the person who wins um and so here's the trivia question for you which disciple do we learn has died in season two episode one all right so think back to that if you follow the snipe life this should be pretty obvious uh because they made an awesome thumbnail about this but which disciple did we learn has died in season two episode one you're reading lift you've probably seen the answer [Laughter] it was early all right i think somebody got this all right denise s awesome great job you were right big james we learned big james is dead uh in the very beginning of season two episode one if you haven't seen it i'm so sorry to spoil that for you but hopefully it's not too much of a spoiler uh but yeah so uh you have won that so take a screenshot right now of the chat and of um your name up there on the screen and then uh send that to brandon at brandon. or brandon brandon at brandonrobbinsministry.com can you remember my own email address um that's a great question you know what just go ahead and email me we'll trust you we'll trust that nobody else is going to steal this gift right now um and if you want to steal a journal for the chosen then also send me a prayer request and i'll pray for you all right so uh what i told you is we um we are doing we're giving away a really cool prize at the end of this and what we are giving away is something called an artsa box um and if you haven't heard of this this is a subscription box where the items all come from the holy land and uh they come from very like specific vendors in the holy land local vendors and they each come from a different region and so we're going to show you real quick is an unboxing where you can see what these boxes look like and i'll kind of take you through all the elements of this and i know um snipe life you guys have done this before too so if you guys want to chime in as we go through this and just share any comments um about stuff you've noticed uh as you've used this or um unboxed it yourself i'd love to to have you guys in this but go ahead dave we'll show the the unboxing of this all right and so um as you see you know your uh art sabot comes in this very beautiful box that hopefully doesn't get roughed up too much in the mail i don't think it's playing actually there it is uh you also see some very nice fashionable hands a nice hand model doing that work right there and so when you open up your arts box you got some really really neat things that that show up here the first thing you get is a whole packet of different information and cool little things that tie into the box so uh what we'll see up here in just as a second in just a second is what some of these cards look like um man i did this very slowly yeah this is absolutely one of my favorite parts of the box because it it shows you so much um detail of different aspects of israel and so the reason why we love the boxes so much is because israel is an amazing place and this is an insane way to help out local artisans i mean it really really is yeah definitely and um each of these things right here you know so the first one we showed you is just like a postcard of an area in the region i think this is the wrong video um it's a postcard of an area in the region and the other is like a recipe for a special kind of bread that one is about some ways to give some christmas gifts yeah i think this is the wrong video i don't think so but i think this is the wrong one what we'll do is we'll uncut it and i'll just show the items that'll be the easiest way to do it um yeah so in that box you get some some really cool stuff and i'll just show you a few things right here one of the things yet is you get a lot of like food and products from around there and that's kind of how what i enjoy when i get a box is i like things that are consumable um i like things that i can taste where i can explore things so like one of the things that comes in the box that i just showed you is uh pure date honey which i've never actually had this before have you guys tasted this yet no we haven't yet didn't taste it yet either i felt bad opening it before i actually showed it on here no you're good um but yep so if you like dates and you like honey that's awesome this um box that i just showed you comes from this desert region near the the dead sea and so one of the other things that comes in here is basalts you like taking bass it's bath salt from the dead sea which i don't even know i didn't know you could get that but yeah that comes in that box and then there's um you get some golden rosemary um salt that also comes from that region so you know when you're at the dead sea you're in the it's incredibly salty region um that comes from there as well uh a couple of things i think you can see them behind me so there's let me grab it so there's one thing that you get that really highlights the dead sea scrolls which were found in that region and it's this like little cistern that looks exactly like what they found when they uncovered the dead sea scrolls and then inside of it is um replicas of the dead sea scrolls which are a little um difficult to get out so i'm not going to try to do it right now but you get to see exactly what that looked like and then there's um information there that tells you all about like what happened how they found them what the dead sea scrolls saying just kind of gives you this really cool look into this incredibly important archaeological find in that region of the world and just to give you a sense of why that those dead sea scrolls are so important the dead sea scrolls were these scrolls that were kept by the essene community out in this area near the dead sea and when they go look at these scrolls these are are pretty much some one of the fewest documents in the entire world that are actually from the time of jesus like they've been untouched they're completely um they've been preserved for all this time and so when they look they see so much about jewish culture at that time they see scriptures that were copied down back then and can see that the the words are the exact same as the words we have in scripture today which just gives all of this credibility to the fact that those scriptures weren't changed over time they've stayed consistent over time it gives us insight into things like languages that were used back then like you know which cultures used aramaic and where did they use hebrew and how do we understand what jesus is doing and the more you dive into the dead sea scrolls the more you can actually learn about the world that jesus lived in which then just gives you a whole new set of eyes for the gospel um and i just think it's really cool really amazing thing to learn about and then the other thing that is in there is uh this jar for olive oil and just has this you know really cool little cork i believe you could put olive oil in it if you wanted to um but just another thing that kind of represents what you would find in the holy land and in those regions and what those vendors make uh anything else you guys want to add put them up on the screen yeah i think um you know for us we've been working with arts a box and we've reached out to them i mean when we were at probably like a thousand subscribers because we were really looking for companies to work with that we really really believed in and so art's a box like i've been to israel twice vanessa's been with me once and um and so and we'll talk about more later but um going to israel is one of the most impactful things that has ever happened to my christian walk and so having a little bit of a little piece of that come to you every every quarter is really really impactful not only that but the artisans that are there whenever covet hit it knocked out a large majority of the local artisans within israel because there was no travel to be done there they're surrounded on all sides by enemies this is a really bad situation for them right tourism is a major major part of how they live and and how things happen in israel and so when this when covet happened and there was zero tourism and and all these businesses were started struggling artsabok stepped in to help specific you know local artisans and so they would go to a um you know a mom in um in nazareth and say hey i want to buy 5 000 orders of your product in this case it was soap right and so they say i want to buy 5 000 this huge bulk order and she just starts crying right like it's it's a really really impactful um thing that's happening so i really encourage you to be a part of arts a box use brandon's link i'm sure it's down below in the description um it's really really an amazing product yeah that's awesome thank you guys yeah and um i just saw thought darla thank you so much and if you guys are interested if you don't win or you know you just want it and you just can't wait uh we got a link down in the description where you will get 20 off of a subscription to that and uh what we're going to be giving away tonight is we're not just gonna give away a box we actually worked with um arts the box and we're gonna be able to give away a whole year of boxes so you will get four boxes over the course of the year uh which is just this incredible value and just a really wonderful gift that connects you to the holy land in a really special way and so i'm excited that we get to do that uh like we said the link is in the description and you can go check that out there the deal's even better than that brandon because if they do an annual subscription on their own it's an extra 10 on top of that so it's actually 30 off an annual subscription with your code so there you go wow that's amazing that's really cool uh so yep thank you guys um for that and um what we're going to do is we're actually going to head on to our next lesson and this is gonna be um given to us by david and so i want to introduce david tate to you david runs now let's be honest about movies it's a channel that looks not just at movies but it also looks at the chosen and david even does these really cool videos that dive into the disciples i mean when i look at how much information he has on these disciples i'm like i don't even know where you got it this is just so cool and so um yeah it's awesome and so david let me just turn it over to you and you can uh you can share with everybody a little bit about yourself and your channel yeah well thank you so much first and foremost yeah hi everybody my name is david and i just want to start by thanking brandon for getting us all on here it's always a pleasure to get together with y'all and just talk about the chosen and talk about god and talk about scripture and all that stuff it's my favorite things to do and it's just a pleasure that y'all would invite me on here uh but yeah so my channel is now let's be honest about movies and like brandon kind of said it started out as a movie review channel but with the influence of the chosen a lot of my subscribers come from people who watch the chosen and so that kind of shifted how the channel works a little bit and so most of my content now is related more to the chosen but i'm also doing kind of more bible study related stuff so as brandon mentioned i'm currently doing this series called the lives of the apostles and we're walking through the lives of each of the 12 apostles from three different perspectives first we're talking about the fictional storylines and the tv show the chosen and then we're taking an in-depth dive into everything we know or might know about their lives from the text of scripture and then thirdly we're talking about what we might or might not know about their lives from the traditions that developed in the early years of the church and so far i'm trying to remember how many of those i've released i believe i've released the videos for the first six apostles so far i've pre-recorded some of them and so i just don't remember how many i've done so far but that's actually been really fun for me and i'm trying to make it to where it's not just an intellectual thing because i think sometimes we can dive into stuff like that and it's just intellectual but my main goal is that we can look at the lives of these chosen people of god and see how he shifted and changed their lives for his glory and i'm hoping that by studying their lives we'll learn how we can also be used by god and we can learn how he shaped them and stuff like that and so it's actually been a blessing to me and i'm hoping that it's a blessing for everybody who's been watching those but in addition to that i also have reviews for all the episodes of the chosen and i do in-depth breakdowns of every single episode i believe i have every episode of the show so far where i literally sit down i click play and then we're just pausing the episode every 15 seconds or so just to talk about what's going on in the episode and so that's basically what my channel is and uh i've really been enjoying it it's been a blessing doing this and it's allowed me the opportunity to get to know y'all and so once again thank you so much for having me on here but i've talked enough about about myself let's start talking about the chosen uh lesson number two is actually going to tie in quite a bit to the second trivia question that we had a few moments ago because it ties into the death of big james and so i sent you all a clip from season two episode one and if y'all can play that for me that'll get us started it's coming my son why are you doing all this why now because we're getting older and our memories are i mean why now during shiva because everyone is here i need to get their memories he won't be the last of us this happens to who knows when i will see the others again or if not in a hurry to write a whole book but i do want to get the eyewitness stories now while we're together isn't matthew going to write something he's only writing about what he saw and about what jesus told him directly but i was there for things that matthew doesn't know about i was in his inmost circle he loved me he helped all of you you just feel the need to talk about it more often i prefer to treasure these things in my heart perfect thank you so much uh yeah so that scene right there in and of itself kind of encapsulates everything i love about the chosen it's about a one minute scene but there's so much just in those few back and forths of dialogue that just there's too much to dig into and so basically the context of this scene is that it's at the beginning of season two episode one and it's a flash forward scene that takes place around probably a.d 44 or 45 so about 15 to 18 years after the events that are taking place in the majority of the show so about 15 years after jesus ministry and what's happened shortly before this is that like we're talking about in the trivia question big james the brother of john he died and so all the apostles have gathered together in jerusalem during shiva that's the jewish time of mourning and they've all gotten together and what happened right before the scene we just saw is that john had been conducting a bunch of interviews with his fellow disciples and fellow friends who followed jesus and he's just been asking them to share their stories about their encounters with jesus so that he compiled some sort of narrative about jesus and what happened during his life and this is eventually going to turn into what we know as the gospel of john and the reason i love this scene so much is because it does what the chosen always does so beautifully it takes something that's rooted in historical fact and then it also kind of embellishes things to let us know what things might have been like and what we have here right at the very beginning mary says to john my son why are you doing all this and so you'll be like what's going on there why does she call him my son this is mary the mother of jesus why is he calling john my son this goes to john chapter 19 whenever jesus is hanging on the cross he turns to the disciple who he loves which all people uh which most scholars say is the apostle john and he says to john behold this is your mother and he says to his mother behold this is your son so he actually entrusts mary to john's care and so that's why mary is calling john my son but then in the dialogue that develops after that i just love what they do so she says my son why are you doing all this and john responds because we're getting older and what the writers of the chosen are doing here is they're giving a hypothetical scenario for how the gospels came to be and this is something that scholars debate about this is stuff that people just endlessly have debated about for the 2000 years since scripture was closed you know since the canon was closed people have always debated why were the scriptures written when they were written why were the gospels written decades after jesus ministry why didn't they immediately just write them down as they went even though in the chosen they've actually showed where matthew and john here and there are writing stuff down and that is plausible but what i like that they're doing here in this one scene is that they're showing us what things could have been like and the cool thing about this is that it's actually consistent with the tradition at that time period what i thought i'd do real quick is i would actually quote to you a person who comes from the early church history this is a guy named clement of alexandria writing in the 2nd century right so less than 100 years after the events that take place in the chosen there's this guy named clement of alexandria and he says this about the composition of the gospels he says for matthew who had at first preached to the hebrews when he was about to go to other peoples committed his gospel to writing in his native tongue and thus compensated those who he was obliged to leave for the loss of his presence and when mark and luke had already published their gospels they say that john who had employed all his time in proclaiming the gospel orally finally proceeded to write for the following reason the three gospels already mentioned having come into the hands of all who of all and into his own two they say that he accepted them and bore witness to their truthfulness but that there was lacking in them an account of the deeds done by christ at the beginning of his ministry this is all recorded by a guy named eusebius in the fourth century but he's quoting a guy from the second century and what i love about this is that the way that clement describes this is he says that the apostles were gathered in jerusalem for a time period and then at some certain point they started going out and they started going to their ministries beyond israel and during this time period it starts off with matthew well matthew's about to leave and he decides that he wants to leave the people of israel he wants to leave them a written gospel for them and so he writes them a gospel he leaves and then mark and luke later on they compose their gospels and then john at the very end he decides okay i need to write a gospel as well and he focuses more on the early ministry of jesus this is consistent with what we see in the gospels but it's also consistent with what we see in the chosen right here mary says john why are you doing this and he says we're getting older right and so the reason why the apostles didn't necessarily write the gospels immediately after jesus died and rose and went to heaven is because they have their eyewitness testimony they could share with people publicly this is what we saw jesus do but once they start getting older once they start dying off once they start spreading abroad now the need like now the need becomes more necessary for them to write down the written accounts so that even in their absence they the people that they left could have written accounts of what jesus did so that it's not distorted and so i like it's really cool here how the chosen has taken something that we see in the in the word of god right in scripture and they've taken stuff from tradition and they've kind of molded that together to see what could this possibly have been like and so once the apostles began to die there would have been motivation to write down the events of christ's ministry that's the first thing i think is really really cool here but then mary continues and she says i mean right now during shiva she's talking about why during the morning period why are you focusing on this rather than morning for your brother james and what i think is cool here is that this once again is consistent with the history of the early church we know that james probably died around a.d 44 or 45 and that's because the apostle james is the only apostle whose death is explicitly detailed in the text of scripture we read about it in acts chapter 12 where it says this about that time herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church he killed james the brother of john with the sword like i said this would have taken place around a.d 44 and 45 and with the death of big james started the second big wave of persecution for the early church and so this seems to be the time whenever the apostles actually started going abroad the first wave of persecution started under the name under this guy named saul who we know as the apostle paul he started the first wave of persecution and then that died out whenever saul converted to christianity and then they had relative peace until about 44-35 whenever james was killed and during that time period it seems like that's whenever the apostles branched out and they started ministering all throughout the world and so it makes sense that this would be the time wherever john and matthew and all of them start getting down and start collecting some of their thoughts and some of the other eyewitness testimonies for their gospel and so i just thought that was really cool how they incorporated that into the show because it is consistent with the word of god and it's consistent with the early church tradition and my favorite part about the show is how they take those two things they merge them together and they show how things could have been and so that is lesson number two awesome man thank you so much uh that is that is awesome you've just done so much research that i love it when i get to talk because how many books you had to read to be able to put together that it's been about five minutes it's just so cool you know it's funny i was actually reading something about this very topic today um i was reading a book that was just talking about how did the gospels come together and one of the things that it highlighted is that at the at the time of jesus and this rabbinic culture it was actually forbidden for disciples to write down the teachings of their rabbi um and you know this was just something and the reason wasn't because there was anything bad with it but it was truly believed back then that oral transmission of something was better than written and that and so that's so weird for us because we live in like this idea of if it's imprint it's in stone but back then the belief was like if it's written down it can be messed up you know somebody could change one word and it changes the whole meaning of the whole thing but if it's passed down orally and you're all teaching the same thing and memorizing the same thing you like balance each other out to where if somebody messes it up you got six other people there to correct them and so it was more trusted and so it's just interesting to imagine that okay how are these disciples wrestling with this how are they saying to themselves but if we want this to spread it can't just live in this oral tradition of us it's got to somehow be put down where other people can get it it's just such a cool thing and it's very interesting that you point that out because that's very consistent with what we saw in season two episode two whenever peter is really or simon sorry not peter yet uh whatever uh whenever he approaches matthew and he's really opposed to the idea of matthew writing down what jesus says and so it's kind of interesting how that coincides there yeah i call him i call him peter like every single time yeah and and when people comment about it i'm just like yeah i'm just gonna keep on calling well now it's hard because simon the zealots part of it too and it's easy to say simon z but we can't call simon peter simon peter yet and so well yeah i mean i took it for granted like i was just saying it all the time in like my first several videos and people were like honestly like who are you talking about i thought his name was simon yeah yeah yeah yeah but um that's cool awesome thank you so much man um so i want to take another moment and now introduce um brandon and vanessa a little bit more formally um brandon and vanessa run a channel called the snipe life and you guys what i love so much about you is that you all are so good about bringing other people together like you know i was so overwhelmed creating videos at the very beginning of this that i don't even know other people were commenting like i mean like i guess i sure i could have believed it was happening but i just didn't know other people were creating videos and doing stuff like that and then you guys reached out and have just done such an amazing job of connecting people together and bringing these communities together and putting out amazing content where when you guys dive into something that it's definitely not what i do you know you look at the creative side of things and um you know you point out all the times when the chosen messes up which i think is just really cool so let me give you guys that the mic and let you introduce yourselves a little bit more and then we're gonna come back and talk about the trip we'll be doing together yeah i'm not necessarily sure that's the one thing we want to be known for but that's okay i mean i mean if it's got to be done i'm not going to shy away from it so while we're the snipe life we look at creativity through the lens of christianity and my name's brandon i'm vanessa and every single time brandon says brandon tonight uh i keep on like like looking around this happens all the time when we're talking on text or whatever too so um anyways so glad to see you guys tonight for sure we just um love talking about the chosen we started probably a little bit after brandon talking about the chosen and yeah like he said we focus a lot on the storytelling aspects of things and why things work the way that they do because i believe that the chosen is the best piece of christian media in my lifetime and so there's nothing that i've seen that's rivaled it there's nothing that i've seen that's better and so far it's been an amazing amazing project to to watch and see to you know come to fruition and uh to analyze and so it's been a really really cool um you know moment in our last few months anything you have to say no you'd like to you do like to kind of poke the beard a little bit sometimes i mean if i have to no he just likes to question things i guess sure sure which is great that's how we should be approaching media in in general right like it's always like always check back to the to the word my my biggest emphasis i feel like is we always try to go back to scripture and make sure that because that's what matters right like we're we're in this um for the bible for jesus yeah take the show for what it is but then understand that scripture is still infallible it's scripture right yeah yeah and that's something i love about what you guys do i mean i know i i tease a little bit that you guys point out the places where they mess up but really that's not the crux of your channel right the heart of your channel is isn't helping to connect it back to the gospel into what scripture is really saying and let a show be a show but let's dive people drive people back into the word and that i mean i think that's something we've probably all experienced where as we're creating these videos i mean that's what people are really searching for like yes this show is cool yes it's a really great depiction but the fact that it gives us access to the gospels in a way where we can maybe picture something that we just had to imagine or we can now understand a scripture in an entirely new way like that's where the power of the holy spirit is really working 100 good good job of that and so speaking of those things that open your eyes to scripture let's talk about this trip that we're going to be leading uh so in 2023 in february uh the three of us are going to be kind of helping to lead a trip to the holy land uh we would love for you guys to be a part of it um i know for those of you who follow my channel this is the first time we've really talked about this and so you guys are kind of getting to hear it first here unless you got the newsletter today um but this is just gonna be such an amazing trip now brandon i know you probably know more about this than any of us i'm gonna unless you share your expertise and you and vanessa just kind of share what you all um yeah wanna tell us about the trip yeah so like i kind of said earlier going to israel for me is one of the the primary things that has changed my relationship with the bible uh specifically and so let me kind of explain it this way so when you read the bible right now and i talk about jerusalem where i talk about the sea of galilee i talk about the town of capernaum what do you think of do you think of a specific house do you think of how big do you think that the sea of galilee actually was because i guarantee you it's smaller than you think how big do you think the city of jerusalem was and what how was it built and what does it look like what are the foundations of the temple right like all of these things that you're reading and that you're thinking of in your mind are fictional things you have a fictional jerusalem in your mind you have a fictional sea of galilee in your mind you have a fictional city of capernaum in your mind right and so when you go to israel what happens is instead of reading the bible as a fictional book and reading it as a story it transforms immensely and what it does is it activates the parts of your brain that are memory instead of a fictional storytelling if that makes sense and so when you come back from israel and you start reading your bible and you start reading about the pool of bethesda or you start reading about jerusalem or you start reading about bethlehem these things are are things that you remember rather than things that you're making up in your own mind and so going to israel is one of the most important things that i can suggest to any any christian um ever and i think that every single christian it should be mandatory for you to go to israel at some point so what about you yeah i just i like you said i'm i have a bad memory so like even remembering trying to remember back to when i did go to israel like um it's hard but it's it's easier to re when i'm reading like you said when i'm reading then i i like it brings back those memories of of even like dave and goliath like yeah those areas and the eli valley yeah so yeah you should go yeah it's amazing so like brandon said the trip is in february of 2023 um just to get the hard thing out of the way right now the trip is three thousand nine three thousand no sorry four thousand one and 197 for just the israel portion and then we're also going to be doing a greece extension that's going to add about three days to our trip um we're going to greece we're going to look at a bunch of different stuff there some biblical sites and some you know some places that paul would have wrote to and that he would have gone to uh we're going to be going to athens i believe we'll be staying in athens for a few days and so it's going to be amazing part but that's going to be an extra 1299. so if you do both parts of the trip the whole trip all together is going to come out to right under fifty five hundred dollars and so um it is an amazing amazing trip if you sign up today you actually get two hundred dollars off that price if you sign up tomorrow you get 150 off that price uh and for a couple more months and then it'll keep on going down and down as we get closer to the trip but it's going to be amazing i really encourage you to go yeah and it's a long trip i mean it's not like you're over there for you know six days in your back it's i mean it's almost two weeks i think if you do the whole thing isn't it yeah if you do the whole thing we'll be gone from february 1st until february 14th yeah which is amazing and so hey tell us a little bit about the guy who's going to really be leading this trip tell us a little bit about rick yeah so rick won't be on the trip but he so rick rickhart is a great friend of mine i've known him since i was a little kid we grew up in the same church and so you know we've been around each other for a very long time served in a lot of ministries together he owns a company called imagine tourism travel and so imagine tourism travel is one of the premier travel agencies to the holy land they've been around longer than almost every other travel agency because his dad started basically the very first uh tourism to israel from america a long time ago in chicago and so um his dad was the pioneer of everything that happened and then a while ago he kind of started his own version of that and with his wife and imagine tours and travels was born it's an amazing company i have never felt safer on a trip um anywhere than with them um and it's he's an amazing amazing guy that knows so much and um i'm excited that you get to talk to him soon brandon you want to talk about that a little bit yeah i was just about to say so i'm gonna actually be flying down to florida um next week and i'm gonna connect up with brandon and with rick and we're gonna sit down and we're gonna talk about what are those spots in the holy land where once you see this place once you experience this you will never see the bubble again so we're going to create a video out of that and put that up in a couple of weeks but it's just i'm so excited for that that's going to be such a great great time to be together yeah it's going to be awesome um well let me um turn this over to you guys you know i haven't you've had a chance to tell us a little bit about your channel but why don't you guys give us a lesson about something people missed in the chosen sure yeah so we were kind of thinking about this and thinking about what we wanted to talk about in the terms of you know what of what have people missed and something that has always bothered me is is this scene here and so we're gonna show you this scene right here i'm just gonna talk through you let me know if you see anything interesting here so i've just spliced together a few scenes here um and uh there's no no sound here but there's some interesting things going on here so this is season one episode two and we've just pulled out a couple of different scenes here so you shout at me in the comments let me know if you see anything interesting here um in the in these scenes and then we'll kind of get into it so here we go we see mary this is the episode titled shabbat like we were talking about earlier the sabbath and so here we see little james and thaddeus for the very first time showing up at mary magdalene's house as she's inviting her guests in barnaby and um i just forgot her name i can't remember her name but uh the blind woman that's with them as well and then obviously jesus shows up as well here and um and comes on in so david did you know the name is it shula yes yes it's julie yeah thank you so much and then jesus comes in and um yeah we can cut back now but um yeah so this scene here has always kind of bothered me a little bit so in jewish culture today right we know that they have things called like yamakas right or kippas is the hebrew word for it and so it's this this interesting thing in this scene or in these scenes right throughout episode two at the end here during the shabbat dinner every single male is wearing a head covering right which doesn't seem so weird yeah it seems like it's only in mary's house because peter and peter has one on that was the first scene i showed yeah yeah so peter has one on he takes it off he kisses it and he puts it on the table um and then obviously in nicodemus house all the pharisees are wearing head turbans and different things like that too so let me kind of go back a little bit and then we'll jump forward but back in the time of jesus um there would be certain head coverings that people would wear especially the high priests would wear turban like head coverings um and this was a sign of respect it was a sign of kind of showing that there was something in between you and god and it was also a lot of people will say that it's a reminder that there's something above you right that god is above you that he's there all the time basically this whole thing is a it's a big sign of respect it's a sign of of surrender right which is really really cool however in the time of jesus they wouldn't have worn keep us like this in fact it wasn't even popular until the middle ages so a long long long time from now and so the the command that comes from this is actually um in the talmud which the the part of this at least the common part of it where people started to work quepos often started where yamaka's often was not until the the middle ages but um here's a piece of um of scripture basically that talks about this well not scripture but a piece of a passage from jewish culture so this is from the uh mishnah torah prayer and priestly blessing 5 5. it says this um it says one should not stand in prayer wearing a money belt nor bare-headed nor bare foot where the local custom is not to stand in the presence of the great without shoes and one should not pray anywhere holding factories in the hand or carrying a scroll and so it goes on but here we see you know it's talking about not being bareheaded and so there's a lot of different like small commands within the tamud and different things that talk about not being bareheaded for this reason it's a sign of great respect it's a sign of you know making sure that you remember that god is above you but it's kind of interesting to me because they wouldn't have had this during the time of jesus so i wonder why the chosen kind of put this in there um it's just always kind of confused me a little bit but you have any thoughts on it i don't i think um they do a really good job of researching and everything yeah but we do notice that later on in later episodes they don't wear no other episode right so like no other episode in season one or season two and i was at first i was like well maybe they only have them wearing it on shabbat but then there's definitely scenes with shabbat in season two and they're not wearing them there and so it's kind of a it's an interesting thing so i want to ask dallas i want to ask the team um if they get a chance to answer my question um you know like what's what's going on with that i don't know i wonder if it's a specific thing like a nod kind of to the jewish community or um or what it was about but here's here's another thing that i was reading says although biblical law does not require a head covering the question of whether to cover has been debated through the ages and biblical times high priests wore a cloth miter or a turban since the middle ages rabbis associated head coverings with piety and a bear head with frivolity according to an entry in the encyclopedia of judaism and so again this is kind of a thing that has been adopted over the years and become more and more um kind of common especially um hasidic jews and stuff like that as well it's a very very big deal for them to be covering their head all the time so yeah i thought that was kind of interesting what about you guys what do you think about that yeah i think about this sort of thing is this is just one of the really challenging things that anybody trying to do this has to wrestle with like what do you incorporate you know and i think some of the stuff that they do in the show i've noticed is almost like nods like yeah maybe it's not entirely accurate to that moment but but the hard thing about it is that like the talmud itself which is where so much of this stuff comes from like i notice all these prayers that they keep bringing in and some of these prayers don't even pop up for like hundreds of years but but with the talmud the hard thing is that like it wasn't even written down until 200 years after jesus right exactly yeah and so it's so hard to know like what in there was first century what you know came a little bit later i mean it's just all this oral tradition that's coming down and they're not like oh well you know 50 years ago we said this yeah just kind of have to guess sometimes and so i think what they're they're doing is they're trying to be faithful to the culture while also this is one of the moments where we realize like maybe you're 1500 years off yeah yeah i think i think my running headcanon now is that just everybody on that day they just had like a specific fashion statement they were trying to make and they all decided to just like yeah i don't know they all wanted to but no in all seriousness i think it also could be that this was pretty early on in the development of the show and uh you know it's always possible that maybe they chose to do that just to remind people hey we're dealing with a different culture here um so like it could have just been like one of those things to like help the viewer remember that things are gonna be different i don't know i might just be trying to justify it in my head cannon it's just a fashion statement awesome hey um dave can you put me on the screen real fast i have a message for the viewer hello viewers of brandon robbins uh live stream i'm hijacking the livestream for a second read the kids series but i did read the uh the regular series except i think the funny thing is i think i got through all the books except for literally the last one and there's like a bunch of books in that series yeah oh yeah i mean it's the very end yeah yeah yeah i remember reading them gosh in high school and everything it's uh it seems so long ago but yeah so that's um that is the the for for answering it for being a part of this now i want to take a quick um you know just a moment before we move on you know we're talking about the holy land and there's the the link down there in the description if you want to sign up for that trip in 2023 but i'm just curious for you guys what are you most excited about when it comes to that trip brandon and vanessa what are you guys most excited about i think most of all this trip is going to be different than any any normal trip to the to the holy land because i have access to rick and rick if you if you have so i know that you guys haven't but i've seen rick when he's in israel literally everybody knows him like he's like the mob boss of israel like you have no he is extremely popular everybody knows him because you know they want his tourists to come to their businesses and stuff like that and so he's he has a lot of really good friends um in the area and so there's certain things that we're we're going to be able to do as a group that normal tourist groups don't get to do and on top of that i have another relationship with it tai chamel who is the the founder of artsabox who lives in jerusalem and he has a lot of friends in israel as well so we have special things that we're planning with both of them that are going to be different than normal trips and so we may be able to do some workshops where we make some pottery or you know fun things as always is like going to the dead sea or walking through old jerusalem going to the wailing wall it's always an amazing spiritual experience the city of the town of capernaum is is huge for me because you know that you know that you know that jesus was there so yeah what about you everything like like you said just it being a content creator type of hosted it's just a different it's gonna be a different experience second i'm gonna remember more and um the grease extension is really something that i'm really like to just to see where paul went yeah um going to happen yeah i have no idea from unicorn i think we're going to court i can't remember yeah it's yeah everything galilee yeah meeting people everything yeah that's awesome man i'm excited you guys are sharing stuff with me i don't even know about this trip that's so cool that's i'm excited and let me just take a quick moment you guys um just so much generosity flooding out i just want to thank some people personally as i go through this i might miss people but thank you so much tomas and barbara and peace for life and deanne and cheryl and just all of you who are donating this i'm just humbled by the fact that you support this channel and what we're doing and it just means so much so thank you guys uh david what is it that you are most excited about with this trip yeah you know i've been to israel three times and every single time that i've gone to israel galilee is it's just my favorite place i think it might be my favorite place on earth i am jealous of all the apostles for growing up there because that place just going out there like usually almost every time i've gone i'd like wake up early in the morning go right by the sea and just like do a bible study as the sun is coming up and it's just amazing it's great to just sit down read the gospels and be like wow this is fantastic but also beyond that i think the thing i'm most excited about is just to be with y'all to meet all the people who are going with us and to just share that experience because the land itself is cool but i think it's enhanced whenever you're with a bunch of people who love god and who are excited about the opportunity to understand his story more you know and so i'm just really excited about being with y'all being with everybody on the trip and i think that's gonna be probably the best part about the whole thing yeah i'm definitely looking forward to that um you know we haven't even i mean i get to see brandon next week but even we all haven't really gotten to meet each other in person and so that'll be so cool and then getting to meet all of you out there um and then i would say the other thing you know i'm really excited about you guys kind of touched on it just the sea of galilee region like everything around there you you know you know jesus walked there he touched those waters he you know so much happened in that spot the more i study the bible you know when i was a kid all of these were just random names of towns i didn't know what they were but you see that all of this is happening in a really compact place and so that in caesarea philippi um yeah it's just one of those places that there's so much meaning in that spot it's kind of scary actually that's one of the places where it's like it it feels dark when you go there because there's so much history of idolatry and even kid sacrifice and so there's some there's some pretty sketchy like feeling when i when i when i think about that place yeah it's heavy not necessarily yeah yeah yeah [Laughter] yeah so i just have to ask with rick being the mob boss of israel has you ever made anybody an offer that they can't refuse oh i'm sure i'm sure he has yeah i'm sure awesome well let's go into another lesson so this is gonna be lesson number four and for lesson number four i wanna show you this really quick moment in season one episode four and i will be honest with you like if you don't have your subtitles on when you watch this you may not even notice it um but jesus is sharing a particular parable and i want you to see it real quick we don't have sound but you can read the subtitles and that's actually what really matters here all right so there it was so as you probably noticed in this moment jesus is sharing the parable of the seeds and the sower and this is one of those things like i said you know he's teaching it to this crowd but if you weren't watching the subtitles there you might not even realize it but it actually ties into the scene in some really cool ways and and when we look at this parable we can actually see it in a different way than we ever had before one of the things that i've found and i've done this most of my life is that many times when people look at this parable they look at this parable backwards and so if you're not familiar with the parable jesus basically says there's this person who had seed and they were sowing the seed and when they threw the seed some of it landed on the path and it was stepped on some landed on rocky soil some landed among the thorns and some landed on good soil and it produced great results and each of these soils is supposed to represent how we receive jesus's message and so whenever i've heard a sermon on this or even when i preach sermons on this like early on in my ministry i always ask the question what soil am i right like that's what i posed to the congregation that's what other pastors said to me ask yourself the question what kind of soil am i and that makes sense right because you hear about all these different types of soil and you're like am i going to be the one that produces 30 you know 60 and 100 fold or am i going to be one of the ones where it doesn't really take root but where jesus actually wants us to begin is with the question what is the seed and actually go into into a lot of depth on this if you've ever seen my beyond the words series i'm going through the gospel of mark and each video is one of those chapters that just gives you all the context and all the details that you need to know so that when you go back you can read it with a totally new set of eyes and and so if you want to see that i think the link is down in the description you can find the link to this particular video mark 4 down there but but what jesus is really trying to show us in this parable by pushing us to that question of what is the seed he's trying to show us that you can't really know the will until you know the what and you can't know what soil you will be until you know what the seed is and in this passage jesus says that the seed is the word but matthew's gospel actually gets more specific matthew's gospel says that the seed is the message about the kingdom of god and the kingdom of god is one of these phrases that you will just see over and over again in the gospels i mean this is really at the heart of jesus's message that he has come to bring the kingdom of god to bring god's kingdom here to earth and really one of the things that i think blew my mind when i started looking closer at jesus's message is that you know as a kid growing up i always thought jesus's message is that if we receive salvation from him after we die then we get to experience paradise right then everything gets better but that's not jesus's message at all like there is that component of jesus's message that there's this like future everlasting life that we get to experience but jesus is also speaking very very much in the present i mean he's speaking to people who are poor who are oppressed whose lives in so many instances are just miserable because of the powers that surround them and oppress them and he's saying god's kingdom is coming to earth now right there is a time coming where god will reign on this earth where the earth will be restored to what god intended it to be in eden where this is a world of justice and peace where god is the one who reigns and this actually becomes even more powerful if you re-watch this scene in the show because jesus is clearly talking about the kingdom as he he continues with even more parables and as he talks to simon and these men in the boat and at the end he tells simon that this thing that they're gonna do they're going to fish for people in other words they're going to spread the seed they're going to go into a hurting world and they're going to tell people that there is good news because the kingdom of god is coming and god has come and walked among them and jesus is entering or bringing about this reign of god in this world and when you think about it right in the end that's exactly what simon peter ends up doing you end up finding out that this man who heard this message in this scene is the good soil like he produces a hundred fold and so this is what it looks like this is like this visual picture of what it looks like to see this parable lived out and so then once we know this once we know what the seed is once we realize what the kingdom of god is that jesus is coming to tell us about then we can ask the question okay well what kind of soil am i right am i ready to spread that kingdom am i ready to surrender my whole life to that do i just want to receive the seed or do i actually want to spread the seed because if you look at the difference in the soils right there's one soil that it just it doesn't even make it into the ground but there's two soils that receive the seed they just can't do anything with it and then there's the good soil that receives the seed and grows and creates even more and that's what jesus calls us to do right he calls us to do both he calls us to receive the seed and to spread the seed and so that's lesson number four uh any any thoughts guys any any questions or thoughts around that it's just it's good stuff i mean there's one thing that uh you touched on there that i think is really kind of crucial uh just the whole idea of like what the gospel is a lot of times when we talk about the gospel we reduce it to just the death and resurrection of christ which that is like the central aspect of it right that's where you really get the meat of it but if you go to like mark chapter 1 the very first chapter of mark you have it saying that jesus went around and preached the gospel and that's because the gospel it's so much more than just the death of resurrection the gospel is the good news that there's a new king in town you know he's going around and he's saying hey like the king is here and i just think that's a really big aspect to it and just you describing what it's going to be like one day whenever we dwell with him forever on a restored earth just like naturally just gets you excited for that day you're like yes yeah there's a new king and it's just it's exciting stuff yeah yeah absolutely i think you know we're seeing similar things going through the gospel of john right now and um yeah it's definitely um interesting to see those those parallels for sure and the understanding of like um we're calling them hyperlinks basically when we talk about it but when you see these specific things that track you back to other other things that that have a meaning right so you're saying like the idea of the seed is all throughout the gospels it really really is and so when you see those things it always brings you back to that understanding of this is what the jews would have understood when they read it you know this is the understanding of of kind of where everything fits together and i love love the way the bible works that way yeah the hyperlinking to the prophecies and just bringing about it's a it's a unified story right the bible is just a unified story of redemption of of hope um yeah i i love that yeah and i love that that word hyperlink right because i mean that's really what's happening all over the place is i mean so many times you know you're reading something and and we notice automatically those quotes of scripture you know our bible makes that really obvious to us but then there's all these other cross references that are in there and it just it takes you to so much depth um yeah we're right as a church right now we're doing um the chosen as a sermon series and so we've just done episode one of season one and you know there's just this constant isaiah 43 going throughout that whole episode but what was so cool is to take that and actually invite our people to go back and look at the last chapter the chapter that was right before it where in in isaiah 42 basically god is just like slamming the israelite people like you guys brought this on yourselves like this exile this captivity all of this stuff like it was all your fault and then in the next verse god's like what's your mind like i called you by name and i love you and i'm gonna see you through anything and it just brings so much more depth to that because if you just read 43 those are really sweet words but if you read 42 and 43 you see this connection and how it all goes together and i think you know that's what we can when we can find those moments in scripture that take us to another place and just give it even more depth and more perspective it just it brings scripture to life in totally new ways yeah i love that yeah um well we're gonna do another giveaway i'm sure you guys are sick of these uh we could we can stop if you want no i'm just kidding uh we got another thing we want to give away as you can tell i'm a lover of books um i love reading and my wife will will probably attest to that that we need more bookshelves so or maybe she would say less books but um what i want to give you guys is this uh book called reading the bible with rabbi jesus and this author lois taverberg i would say is is an author who in many ways truly changed my life i read a book that she wrote called sitting at the feet of rabbi jesus and it was this book that opened my eyes to the context culture history of of the time of jesus where all of a sudden i started seeing things i'd known my entire life in totally new ways like just things like pentecost like it just brought it to life in this whole new way and gave me a whole new perspective on it and uh so she's written this book about like having this jewish perspective as you read scripture that can totally transform how you read the bible and that's a lot of what we do on this channel and so i would love to give that book to one of you so again just write your response in the chat the answer to this trivia question and then if you get it if we name you email me at brandon brandonrobbinsministry.com and i will get all your details to give that to you so here is your question what town on the sea of galilee did jesus use as his home base and here's a hint this is also the town where peter andrew james and john are from so what town on the sea of galilee did jesus use as his home base while we're waiting on those answers to come in i just want to say that's a great book series like all the books in that series i mean they like you that's just it's formative stuff so whoever's getting it's getting a good book bingo you want it man woman that's awesome congratulations and that was just a really cool name to be able to say when i did that so thank you for that but you've won this and so please go on ahead and um just take a screenshot right now shoot me an email brandon brandonrobbinsministry.com and that is my gift to you thank you so much but yeah david you are you are so right like so they're sitting at the feet of rabbi jesus there's walking in the dust of rabbi jesus um there's this book reading the bible with rabbi jesus she's got some other really great stuff too but those are those are three big ones that if you're gonna have some books in your library those are definitely three good books to have and i can't remember if i put it in the description on this but if you look at my other videos i've got a link um in my descriptions where i give you just like a list of books that if you really want to dive deep into this um these are some great books that i use that you could use and and these are among them it's a great series any other book i'm just curious david put you on the spot um or even you guys snipe life any other books you're like this this is powerful i love this it's the book that he needs to read thank you bible absolutely yeah the bible's number one but i mean like i said i i've currently been doing my um i've been doing my lives of the apostle series so right now i've been diving into more like scholarly stuff so if you're into scholarly stuff i've got some that's maybe what i've been reading but i'm reading the fate of the apostles by sean mcdowell which is fantastic and then jesus and the eyewitnesses by richard bockham those are both really good books that they're scholarly but they're not boring if that makes sense uh a lot like those are the ones that i can actually recommend without you know thinking that you're gonna fall asleep while reading them because yeah i like anything uh apologetics so defending the faith by uh mary jo sharp i believe and then anything j warner wallace and sean mcdowell and josh mcdowell they're great great books yeah this is where we differ uh absolutely for sure you guys you guys are the the scholarly book people i'm the uh let's watch a youtube video to figure this out a hundred percent i'm just not there brain wise for sure so that's awesome oh audiobooks is what dave is saying he's an audiobook i like that yeah i listen i'll read my bible or like anything that i have to read like quickly i'll read everything on like two times speed read along with it that's just how i am for sure that's funny that you say two times speed because my brain cannot process that fast yeah you gotta work up to it yeah i had to do two times for everything like all youtube videos and stuff i just two times all the way yeah that's cool awesome well guys i think we are on to our last uh lesson for everybody tonight so in the five um things that you didn't notice in episodes one and two or seasons one and two um this last one is going to be things that you didn't know about matthew and i think we're each going to take a shot at this some things you may not have known about this character um yes i can so um bingo says can i give the gift to sheila hall and i would be happy to so sheila if you want to take a screenshot of this and go ahead and send that to me at brandon brandonrobbinsministry.com um then i will send that gift to you and that is gonna be the reading of the bible rabbi jesus absolutely thank you so much bingo that's wonderful and generous of you thank you for doing that um so okay things you didn't know about matthew things maybe you didn't notice about him in this um these seasons or just things maybe you didn't know about him in general so i'm gonna let david um go first yeah so i decided to pull a little bit of a switch through with this and this actually comes from the chosen novel which you just actually gave away a few minutes ago uh and in the chosen novel it is revealed that matthew's birth name was actually levi because his parents wanted him to grow up and become a priest but once he became a tax collector he decided that he would go by the name matthew it was his greek name because he wanted to make it easier on his family so that they didn't have to associate with him and so it was more like him just giving in to the fact that we've seen in the show where he says that his parents viewed him as like they didn't have a son anymore and so that's what it's revealed in the show and the reason they do that is because that is their way of reconciling a thing that we see in the gospels that people have constantly wrestled through because if you go to the gospel of matthew you have this account of jesus coming up to a tax collector calling him to follow him and he's referred to as matthew if you go to mark and luke it says he went up to a tax collector named levi and called him to follow him and so people have constantly wrestled through like what do we do with this one's matthew one's levi and we have good reason to think like that these are the same people and i spend like 30 minutes discussing this in my lives of the apostle videos like they were saying i i have i just ramble on and on and on so with good stuff really good stuff ideally ideally but yeah so we have good reason to think that matthew and levi are the same person uh and we just have to figure out why did they go by different names and ultimately we don't know and so we can kind of just speculate and so that was the way that the chosen decided to reconcile that levi was his birth name and then whenever he became a tax collector he decided to go by matthew just to separate himself from his family so that they didn't have to go around publicly admitting that their son was a tax collector so i thought that was kind of cool yeah yeah definitely what about you guys snipe life what um what's your thought about matthew yeah for sure so we're gonna kind of just dive into um you know the whole understanding of where matthew was and where he's kind of going i think um there's some really interesting things coming up and so in season one you know we saw matthew extremely arrogant um extremely quick to kind of you know do things for himself um and we see even in the first episode right when he's talking to this man that's taking him through town he's hired this guy so in matthew's mind you know he's very quick with him he's like i hired you for a job do the job or why else am i talking to you you know pretty much um and so he has this understanding of even him throwing away the shoes that he's discarding and the guy's like oh let me take those that's like a ton of money for me and matthew's like well you can get them on your own time i'm paying you for this job right now and so we see the transformation through season one and season two you know through season one we don't see too much of it because matthew isn't with the group until the end of the season but then during season two we see a lot of movement in him and so we see one scene in particular with thomas where um he's kind of starting to realize like oh maybe i am arrogant maybe there is something that i need to look at and then and then in episode six of season two he has a really big moment a really really strong moment of character development when he's talking with mary magdalene and he says i'm not a good person and the understanding of mary when when she's seeing that this scene is mostly i think for simon peter but having matthew you know say that out loud to to people i think is a huge huge huge thing for his character development and um you want to say something about that before moving on you just like that part yeah i do i love that that that specific scene in general is just a great example of how we should be as a church yeah in my opinion yeah we should be like trying to lift everybody up you know um instead of beating down like especially in the low parts yeah anyway yeah absolutely i think that scene is amazing for character development on all three of their parts even how he was like with his without his handkerchief and like he's giving up that old part of him and and the the thing that i'm moving on to is we're gonna see a lot more of that and so as we go through season two we see that moment we see episode seven and then we see episode eight in the season finale when he's with jesus and he has this ex extreme moment with jesus right he's with jesus for days and days and days going over the sermon on the mount and jesus is you know speaking to him this this first part of the beatitudes and and him having this moment with jesus i think he's just another place where his walls begin to crumble down right uh but then on top of that i think in season three we're going to see a massive massive switch in matthew not that he's going to be a different person i think he's going to still have those same ocd type tendencies i think he's going to still be the same personality but i think he's going to be more open to a lot of change from jesus and a lot of change within the group as well i think that's going to come along with a wardrobe change i think that's going to come along with a lot of different things um within season three and i think we're going to see um you know as the disciples split off two by two to go and and you know spread the word of christ basically i think we're going to see a lot of really cool matthew moments that i'm really excited for in season three so yeah i think you just mentioned so many things i'm really looking forward to as these seasons go on like how they develop but also those moments where you've just been waiting for this like i want to see what happens when they go two by two i want to see how some of this stuff begins to unfold because you know that there's this insane journey ahead of them as they head towards the cross and i don't know exactly how far the show will eventually go but just the development i mean even as you see that that scene in season two episode one uh you know years down the road you can tell like something has has really happened and these are totally different people and so to see that change is i'm sure they're already planning it out the creators of the show yeah we know like a general timeline like we know that the crucifixion happens in season six and then we know season seven don't spoil it yeah we know that season seven is kind of the startup of the church and acts and stuff like that and so it'll be interesting to see for sure but we do know that the two by two is gonna happen in season three um as well so that should be really interesting to watch i'm especially i know this isn't this is kind of off topic but i'm especially especially excited to see judas and how they um and how they make him uh a character because i think in season three they're going to focus on him as a character that we that we fall in love with and then later on i think he's we're going to see more and more of some other stuff but i know and i'm sure that's going to be controversial but i do think that there is some real value in allowing judas to be a character and not a caricature and i think you know when you when you kind of look at i mean i did a video about judas at one point and just there's some little things in scripture that you're like oh like this wouldn't happen to somebody who's just this diabolical person for three years you know something more is going on here and i think it's gonna be interesting how they flesh out i know i know they have to be really careful as they do that but but yeah it'll be really interesting i've always talked about that with uh like my bible study group how judas is one of the scariest people in all scriptures to me i mean on the night that jesus is going to be betrayed by him he says when he's going to betray me and nobody just turns it's like oh it's definitely judas yeah like they doubt themselves before they doubt judas and so i'm really interested to see how they develop it because they have to make you love judas because all the other apostles love judas but back to matthew uh i'm just really excited to see him start growing out that epic beard that he had absolutely yeah yeah uh well let me share one one of the things that that i just find so fascinating about matthew this actually goes a little bit um beyond the show but you know in season two episode one you see matthew talking about how he's planning to create a gospel and writing down these accounts and one of the things that as we look at early church people and some other historical documents we see that there's actually records that matthew wrote a gospel in hebrew and we're going to put up some of those quotes for you real quick one of them comes from eusebius uh he's this early church father and it says therefore matthew put the logia in an ordered arrangement in the hebrew language but each person interpreted them as he could and so there it is like right up you know straight forward it says he wrote the gospel in hebrew and and we get other accounts of this too i think it's irenaeus as our next one um where irenaeus says matthew also used or issued a written gospel among the hebrews in their own dialect while peter and paul were preaching at rome and laying the foundations of the church and then i think even years later there's still accounts of this um in our last one is it yep st jerome says matthew composed a gospel of christ at first published in judea and hebrew for the sake of those of the circumcision who believed and so just every one of these accounts you know these are three totally different accounts but all of them are saying matthew wrote this gospel in hebrew for jewish people and you know there's actually another account um that with eusebius that says pantiness um a missionary in india found a copy of matthew's gospel in hebrew in 180 a.d and so i mean what it just shows you is that there's all these hebrew versions that are circulating that are reaching jewish people around the world and if you think about it like this makes sense right it's kind of like we talked about um you know where this is a community of people who they've been passing this stuff down orally but but now this has to be spread to jewish people and many jewish people may not have necessarily read greek and and so there's this gospel that's being written in their own language and when you look closer you see that there is there are all these idioms that appear that make scholars will tell you make no sense in greek um they're just phrases that would not have been used in greek but they are hebrew idioms and so you can almost just imagine that this is being recorded like at this point matthew's like the the jewish people around the world need to see this they need to see it in our language this is a holy language and so he puts that down to paper for them um and he just wanted to make sure that people knew that the messiah had come and so his account was firsthand he'd watched these things happen his life had been changed drastically and he knew his mission right he knew that the great commission was for him to make sure that everybody around the earth um knew this message about jesus and there's actually a really cool book you can read um it's called the hebrew gospel of matthew and i believe i may have it in that list of things um in in the descriptions but it it gives you the the hebrew version like the translation from the hebrew um versions of this gospel that they found and then kind of breaks it down for you where it just kind of shows you where the unique things are in in this particular version of the gospel there's things that could get missed if you're just looking at it translated directly from greek or even just looking at it in english it shows you um just these little things that make sometimes a really big difference and so definitely something to check out but but yeah just so those things that i mean i didn't know this my whole life and you start digging and you find some really really cool stuff yeah that's super awesome that he's like the traitor right like the one that's betraying the jewish his jewish people and for him to turn like the redemption in that and that he him writing a hebrew version of that's just that's amazing i you taught me something today so that's awesome [Laughter] all right guys so it is time for the big giveaway one year of arts a box um and so here is what you got to do you got to write the answer to this question in the description and then when we pick you um you'll send an email to me with that but here's here's your final question what is the name or sorry write it in the comments not in the description right in the chat not in the description um okay so here's the here's the question what is the name of the other disciple who might possibly be matthew's brother so what is the name of the other disciple who might also possibly be matthew's brother oh yeah yeah yeah darla got it yeah yep james son of alpha so congratulations darla uh james little james i think is maybe what we call him um but he is james the son of alphaeus and then matthew is also referred to as levi the son of alpheus now this is that's about the connection that we have that's why i say a big might be a brother um but i actually go into this in my video i think it's on matthew just talking about how matthew as being a tax collector would have been disowned by his family i mean very much would have potentially given up that name like he was no longer his father's son and so there's there's this loose connection that the two of them might be related and as you look into the to the disciples and you see some of the connections that pop up in scripture there's actually a lot of evidence that there's actually more relationships between these people than than i ever thought i just thought they were 12 random guys but but there actually are some connections um between them possible relations so there it is so darla you win congratulations just take uh an image um a screenshot right now and send that to me in an email and then we will get you set up with one year of artsabox which is so cool i don't even have a yearbook so congratulations that's awesome uh well i just want to take a moment right now that that's kind of the conclusion of this event um i'm so glad you guys are here i want to do a quick wrap-up right now just to give you some announcements of things coming up um on my channel and then i want to give you guys um you know snipe life and um david uh just let you guys share if anything's coming up on your channel but some quick announcements you might want to know about my channel next week we will have a video that i'm really excited about i actually did a version of this but i have updated it and i've expanded it and it's called 10 words that will change the way that you read the bible and it's actually going to be more than 10 words but but 10 plus words that will change the way that you read the bible and so these are words where if you understand what this word really means um maybe if you like take yourself out of the you know 21st century western context and see it as somebody would have understood this word in the first century or maybe you understand what it meant in the hebrew verses what it means to us in english these will change how you see some really really key scriptures even some like controversial challenging scriptures um in the bible and and just i mean for me these are words that have changed how i read it forever and so that's coming out next week and then in a couple of weeks we're going to do beyond the words mark seven so continue that series and then after that we'll have the interview with rick and we just brought our newsletter out today so if you
