hey everyone today i'm going to show you five tricks that can help you make your chords better instantly and we're gonna jump right into it but right before we do i want to officially announce my new pack called orbital which has 125 of the greatest sounds that i've ever made for extra serum usable in future base future house and other electronic genres and i am so excited about this pack that i'm giving away 20 of the sounds for free and a smaller pack called visionary and you can get that pack sent to you for free by hitting the link below this video so let's go ahead and get started guys alright guys so trick number one that i like to use when making cores especially when i'm struggling or i just need more inspiration on my chords is to try the same chords in different types of sounds and rhythms so here's a set of chords that I'm using pad totally airy from the visionary pack a beautiful set of chords here but to really understand what these course actually sound like I want to hear what they sound like with a different anatomy of sound so I'm gonna try these in a different slightly different rhythm and a plucky sound and right there because we got to listen to the chords with two different sounds and forms we really get a good idea of what these chords sound like from different angles so let's go ahead and Detroit number two all right guys let's go ahead and hop into trick number two which is starting with a drum beat and simply building the chords on the beat of the drums this helps just to give you something to start with especially if your creators block or you just want to get that quick explosive start on writing your chords out so I have a simple simple little drum rhythm here and it sounds like this all I'm gonna do is follow the rhythm of the drums and I'm gonna end up with something cool because drums give us that nice structural foundation so building chords we always start bass first you can see every kick gets a note we are using pad basic pad from the visionary preset pack so we came an octave up here then we're gonna go seven semitones up from this one and I'm gonna put some notes in the middle all right guys I use this next trick a lot and it's where we start with a drone and then just simply harmonize our chords with the TRO and so I'm gonna grab one of these beautiful sounds the sound sounds like this [Music] and you can hear it's very Airy very very atmospheric and it sounds like these that I have the easiest time harmonizing with because they're very by V to me [Music] and get that nice harmonization with our drone [Music] but once you get something you like like I do here you can go ahead and build the chords and it will sound nice 100% of the time as long as your bass don't sound good so these are the bass notes or bottom notes of the chords we come seven semitones up with the same notes and then we pick those middle notes that sound good [Music] alright guys now I'm going to show you how to make any chord progression less cheesy and I use this trick in every single chord progression I ever make and this works really well from it for every chord progression especially the cheesy ones like this [Music] and I'll be using pad for ways again so what I do is I take a chord progression that is in super basic form like you see here and what I do is start just reavoice in the chord so that there is linear as possible especially with these upper notes here and all this means is I'm going to take some of these higher notes and pull them an octave down so that the chords are as linear as possible and there's no like trick to doing this there's no exact way to do this you're really just rearranging the notes in the octaves however you want to and if you get a good sound then you're on the right track so now we should have this just by taking those notes down an octave so now they sound a little bit less cheesy a little bit less computerized this last trick I'm going to show you how I layer the cords in order to give me enough material for the song and what this allows us to do is get different angles on the cords to see if we really like them while we're giving ourselves enough material to write out the song so we have a basic set of chords here [Music] and this is pad basic pad and what I like to do is duplicate what we have and I'm not going to get rid of these original ones I'm just going to take these new ones and make a different rhythm with a different sound and see if they work together with these original chords alright guys so we got a second layer here using the music box preset guys I want to show you this project real quick where I actually used this trick and was able to pull it off really really nicely with the contrast between the two types of chord sounds so we're gonna start off with a pad chord sound and it's gonna transition into this plucked chord sound and the contrast between the two types of sounds is just so amazing here we go [Music] alright guys so I hope this video was able to help you make sure to grab vizionary by using the link below and if you would like to learn more about chord writing melody writing and sound design come join me in my
