hello welcome back to the crafty organizer today i am stupid excited to share what i've done with you now i'm going to do this completely out of order normally i show you how i make something but i want you to see the value of it before so make sure you stay till the end if you want to see how i did this i have used foam core storage lots of times with you guys and the totally tiffany dupe that i did a couple of weeks ago got me to thinking what if i did this on a larger scale and reinforced it so that you could make some larger storage for whatever it is you need so that's what i did today so here is this giant bookcase that i made and it is completely made out of foam core now i have reinforced the living daylights out of this because i want to test it you heard me right i'm going to be doing this live with you i have a bunch of bins and items stored in things already and i've weighed every single one of them so as i'm placing things on here you're going to be seeing with me how much weight it can hold my goal is 20 pounds because i think if you could store 20 pounds worth of your craft items with only five dollars worth of foam core i i i'm excited i hope you're excited too make sure you click the like button if you do but we're going to be doing this live so this is either going to be an epic fail at which point you won't need to stay to the end to see how you make it or it will be a huge success and you'll stay to the end to see how we made it so let's get started now i've set this up so that i've created supports underneath three of the shelves the top three even though this is the top of the bookcase i designed it so that you could put things on top so again if you're interested on how i did that stay till the end but right now let's load this up and see how much it can hold now with any bookcase i always recommend going heaviest on the bottom first this adds stability to a bookcase no matter what the material it's made out of the other thing that you want to do is make sure that your heavier things are on the outside of the shelves with the lighter things in the middle and again it's not just when you're using something made out of foam core or cardboard this is if you're using oak or mdf or pine if you've ever gotten shelves that have bowed in the middle it's because the weight was too much in the center especially if it's a wide shelf it just can't handle it so keep your heavier things towards the outside and your lighter things in the middle so here are my bins and here are the rubber stamps these are on block so these are going to be heavier now whatever you put on this bottom is irrelevant because your unit is going to either be on a table on a desk if you're using it as a hutch or on the floor so this bottom shelf you could probably load up with a lot more as long as it's not leaning to the side so if you were to put books in here i would use book ends with it so that the weight isn't pushing on the outside because after all this is foam core but right now we've got five pounds on the bottom with with the two totes filled with rubber stamps now i know i said do the heaviest things on the bottom but i really want to test this for you guys so that you know if it's worthy or not so i am putting all of my paints on this shelf i basically emptied everything from the gutters that i made and i started pulling supplies from around my office i actually ran out of supplies so most of the things that i use on a regular basis that are all around me have been consolidated into this bookcase so let's go with paints for the paints i am using the soda can holder from the dollar tree and guess what i found out it perfectly holds 32 of the acrylic paint bottles i thought that was incredible i really did except that this little boy is five pounds on its own so i was kind of expecting five pounds to be on each shelf but we're going to push the limits on this one because i want to see what it'll do for you so here's i'm doing this live and i'm nervous here's the first five pounds going on the outside okay so far so good i'm sorry i keep going up and down everything is around me so this one had the remainder of my paints it had some of the bigger bottles and it has my ceramic water bottle so this one was i think oh i was marking on the back see i was smart this one was three pounds uh and again i'm showing you pictures so that you know i'm not fibbing about this three pounds plus the other one that makes eight pounds for this shelf okay so far so good okay i've got one more to add to this one and this one was also three pounds it's all of my adhesives and my tape so this one's a little bit heavier oh that makes 11 okay so this one is just over 11 pounds on one single shell okay okay this is the heaviest shelf so if this manages to stay this whole time and not buckle um then oh my gosh you guys i'm gonna be so excited with you again i didn't design this to hold heavier weight but i want you to see that when i'm building these they actually are really strong if you uh if you end up putting heavier weight on here what you could do is build a support just out of a square that's the exact same height and you could put this in here to give more stability to it i am so stinking thrilled right now okay sorry let me let me go to the top shelf now for this one i did ribbons and i used those soda can holders again and i'm again i'm sorry i keep bending down but i had everything laid around me so that it would work better for the video so i weighed all three of these together and it was three pounds total and again this is just the fridge soda holder i think these are awesome for so many different things so this one is only three pounds total so i totally know this shelf can handle it since it handled 11 pounds already okay so now i'm going to the top uh and when you watch the tutorial i reinforced three of the shelves i did not reinforce the bottom because as i said this is going to be resting on top of whatever surface you have whether it's a desk a table or the floor but i did reinforce this shelf this shelf and the top shelf so that you're getting to utilize this for storage as well so for the top i'm going to play with the configuration a little bit you can see that you can put two of the locker bins together or you can do three of the soda bins but you could also do a combination where you have two of the soda bin holders and one locker the top is a little bit wider because it doesn't have the sides so i'm going to do a locker bin with pens markers and pencils and this one is heavy this one is three and a half pounds and i made it so that you've got things in containers so that you could just pull it out i want this to be really functional for you not just to test to see how strong it is so as i was putting things together i was genuinely making it of how would i want things organized on a shelf so i would have easy access to it so this one's going on the top and again heavier things on the outside this last one again i ran out of things in my area but these are my little sanding blocks and sanding papers this will actually sit right in the middle this last bin i want to show you how to break down additional categories inside you know i love storage bags inside but this is a little bit of a different take so i got two different food storage containers and i tried two different ones because i know different stores have different things so the rubber maid is called the take along and it is a 2.9 cup and the betty crocker is called an easy seal and it is three and a 3.4 cups worth of storage inside i only bought two sets but if you had more you could put one more of these containers inside but then i just place things that i'm going to use frequently these are my small embellishments i have my small bits of twine and ribbon i have glue sticks and then the last one i have my washi tape so it could fit five but i had four so this is uh three and three pounds the pens were 3.4 pounds so that comes that comes to 6.7 pounds which if the bottom was 5 and then 11.7 uh 3 and 6.7 i cannot do math i think that's just over 25 pounds which means i've already exceeded what i was hoping it would hold so this is it i cannot even believe it you guys [Music] i what do you think of this i am so genuinely excited so as i was building this i kept thinking strength strength strength i did a lot of the same techniques that i did with the totally tiffany container that i duped but i got suggestions on using straight pins so i bought straight pins to strengthen all of the seams but the ones that i bought were too long and too wide around and it kept poking through at weird angles i couldn't get them in straight and i was worried about stabbing myself so instead i doubled the foam core in certain places and i added a small strip of furring wood so again stay to the end if you want to see the whole tutorial and how i made it but again i haven't done the math yet but it's over 25 pounds that this foam core bookcase is holding right now i am so thrilled with this you can easily slide things off get access to it and slide it right back on and you guys if you were to cover this with any type of contact paper it would become even stronger or if you decoupaged it with something it would become even stronger i used five sheets of foam core to make this so for five dollars i got a 20 inch by 30 inch little bookcase and you could make as many of these as you needed and put them across a table for a ton of storage i have one last thing i want to show you with this before we get into the actual how to make it and that is there's dead space on some of these shelves and i know a lot of you like to have things on dowels whether it's to hold scissors or ribbons or your washi tapes because this is made out of foam core you cannot use a tension rod on here because tension works by pushing outwards and because this is just foam core it would cut it would compromise the entire thing and it would come crashing down but i had an idea where did i put it oh i had an idea of taking bottle caps you know the type you get off of your soda bottles or your water bottles and i just cut a hole in the lid i just took my little snippers and i snipped two sides bent the tab back and it broke right off i did that twice and what i'm going to do is glue these bottle caps on the inside of my bookcase so that a small dowel can just go right through that hole and rest inside now this isn't meant for a lot of weight uh i'm already impressed to death with how much weight this is holding i would not make this more than about a pound mostly because i don't know how the glue would hold up on the weight of that so i'm going to use hot glue and we're going to check this out i am going to measure really quick i'll do that off camera so that it's level but i'm going to glue it and put it in and see how it works so i'll be right back so i went ahead and took my washi rolls and put it on here again this is a bamboo stick i just had lying around so it's not exactly straight but that's okay i want to show you how this works so i glued these soda bottle lids or the water bottle lids inside and now i'm going to do is in this openings that was on each one i'm just going to let it slide through and rest inside the bottle cap totally works i'm so happy with this i hope you're excited about it and you can see some benefits and you'll stick around for how i make it so let's get started with that i used five sheets of foam core now i know not everyone has access to foam core i believe you could use cardboard i don't know how strong it would be because that's not what i'm testing but five sheets of foam core i also used my hot glue gun i did use several sticks of glue i think i probably went through about eight on this project the shipping tape and if you have better success straight pins that's an absolute option i also used my square and my fiskars blade the very first thing i did was measure the depth of the containers i was using which for me was 12 inches so i went ahead and transferred that on and i cut both boards so i had a total of four shelves that were 12 inches deep by 20 inches which is the width of the board then i cut down the furring strips i already had one of these but you can get them for about 98 cents at your hardware store and this is just for demonstration but i'm showing i'm going to glue a furring strip to the base of each one i'm going to add hot glue to that furring strip and i'm just going to stick it right to the middle of the shelf if you plan on adding more weight you could add a furring strip to the front and the back and use another full sheet but i'm just using the middle to keep this super strong i'm going to do this to all three of the shelves and any place i noticed that it's lifting up i just added a little bit more and i did add a bead along the front the side but look how strong this is now it's time to create the backing i used one full size sheet and i marked at 10 and 20 inches this is where the two middle shelves are going to go so this sheet does not get cut down so this will be a top but i'm going to start in the middle first and do these first two pieces so i just run a bead of the hot glue along the edge and i line it up to the two dots and just press it into place you only need to hold this for a few seconds and i did get my square out just to make sure that the shelf was going to be as straight as possible repeat this with the second shelf and then use the shipping glue on the edges of the top and the bottom now i'm going to put on the bottom you'll notice this piece does not have a support on it and then i can put on the top piece for every one of these even if you don't see it i use shipping tape now i'm going to mark the edge of every single one of the shelves just in case there's any discrepancies and then i'm going to cut this out twice so that i have the sides of my bookcase once i have those completely cut i am ready to start assembling the rest of this bookcase after you're done cutting the sides for this you're going to go ahead and mark the 10 and 20 spots again and this is to make sure that your shelves are straight once you've glued to it i'm going to run a long bead of glue along just the back of the bookshelf and this is to make sure i can get that seam completely down and make sure that it's flush and square once i have that secure i can start going one shelf at a time and i'm just going to repeat this process on all four and again if you don't see me doing it i promise i not only ran a bead of hot glue around each seam but i also strengthened it after i put the glue on with the shipping tape make sure you do it in that order hot glue first and then the shipping tape on top of it once i had all four shelves done it was time to do the exact same thing to the other side so i measured at the 10 and 20 marks just to make sure everything was perfectly squared and i start with the back first the reason you do this is to make sure that you have room for adjustments afterwards so if this is completely flush then everything else will come out perfectly so i'll start with that top and then i'm gonna switch the angle here so you can see but i'm just gonna i've already attached this one i'm going to run a bead of glue all the way around before i put on the shipping tape and i went through a lot of glue so now i'm running this now i'm running the glue along the bottom and then pushing it down and running another additional bead of glue all along the length of the top and bottom of the shelf here's the last one so i've got the glue down i'm placing it on top and then i'm going to go ahead and put that whole bead of glue in that corner and then off camera i will add the shipping tape i i don't even know what else to say i am so excited about this i finally did the math it was 26.1 pounds that this foam core bookcase held so for five dollars and again if you're buying the containers from your dollar store it'll be more expensive i like the look of these i think these dollar tree locker bins are great i use them for a multitude of things you could also put small little labels on these and dress it up or you know i love doing the handles if you're interested on how i put handles on things i've got a link to that video in the description below but it'll be interesting to see how it holds up over time i'm going to leave this for a couple of days make sure you go to my facebook page and check in i'm going to post probably in three or four days about how it's holding up over time but i am just tickled pig with this so thank you so much for watching today hopefully you didn't think i was too much of a geek getting all giddy about a five dollar storage unit but i am super excited about this and i just can't get over this shelf i i'm so excited anyway thank you guys so much for watching thanks to my patrons who allow me to make these videos and i will see you guys in just a few days bye [Music] oh my gosh i can't believe it [Music] i can't believe it [Music] you
