hello everyone I'm calling Canet today we're gonna have some fun because today I'm going to show you five of my top favorite router bits and you know if you haven't subscribed to my channel yet I invite you to do that but let's get started looking at router bits for years I've had people say : I just bought a new router what bits should I get and my answer is always the same just buy the bits that you need when you need them just buy your bits one at a time when you need a specific bit and and just use that now the bits I'm going to show you today are bits that I use all the time and a lot of people use a lot of the time but the ones that you select may be different so these are just some suggestions from what I use before we get started talking about bits I want to talk first of all about shanks router bits come in two shanks a quarter inch see how thin that is and half inch and you can see how thick that is now if you have a trim router they will only take quarter inch size router bits a quarter inch shank if you have a larger router they will come with in most cases with two kinds of kaulitz at nuts and Kaulitz and you can see there's two different sizes so they will take both quarter inch and half inch and depending on which nut and call it you install and the collet is the inside part of course the nut is the outside there's the lineup of bits that I use probably in order that I use them the most frequently the first one is a round over bit and around over bit of course is just used for rounding over the edge of something just to make it smoother or to make it look good and round over bits come in all sorts of various sizes but I use this one the most and it's 3/8 the second bit that I use a lot is called a rabbeting bit and it has a removable bearing most of these have bearings on the top but this one has removable bearing because you can put different bearings on it and you can see that by changing the bearing it shows you or it it it allows you to make a deeper cut so if I put for example this bearing on of course you can only see a little bit of carbide there so it just makes a very shallow cut compared to this one which makes it allows a lot of carbide to be exposed so it would make a very deep cut now with many of these bits there's a little washer on top you need to be careful with these sometimes because this bearing on top always needs to be able to spin free but some of them if you put them on the wrong way they'll actually jam up against the carbide and they won't spin so when you're putting these together make sure that you put the bearing the right way and when you tighten it and there's a little there will be little allen wrenches that you can use to tighten those up and when you do that double check and it doesn't need to be super super tight just check to make sure that that bearing spins freely before you put it on your router the next bit is called a flush trim bit and the idea with a flush trim bit is that the bearing is at exactly the same level as the carbide cutting blade and you would use a blade like this or a bit like this if you were trimming for example a veneer and you wanted the veneer you can see how it's hanging over there if you wanted it at the same level as that wood you could run that bit along there and it would trim that veneer off to exactly the same level as the wood because the bearing is being used as a guide now these kinds of bits come in three different variations they come in this one with the bearing at the end there's also another one with a bearing down here and there's a third one that has two bearings so you have to remember I have to think about how you're what application you're going to be using it in but this is easily the most popular with the bearing at the tip the next bit is called an OG often called a Roman ogee bit and that's because of the kind of shape that it cuts out and you can see from the shape of it this is the kind of bit that you would use for example if you were making picture frames maybe some molding for some cabinetry some sort of decorative molding and many of these have bearings on top that you can change the bearings on and when you do that you'll get a slightly altered effect of the molding so just a feature to watch for when you're looking at Oh G bits [Music] the last bit that I use quite a bit of is just a simple straight bit and this is a pure carbide bit and they come in spiral up and spiral down and what it's used for primarily is for drilling holes but you can if you're very very careful with this you can use it for making slots as well now this is carbide this is not steel and a bit like this you have to be very careful with them because these bits do not like to travel they will snap unlike all of these other bits for example this is a steel bit with carbide inlaid on this bit that I'm holding in my hand is pure carbide and carbide has more of a characteristic like crystal for example if you drop a carbide bit on a concrete floor or sometimes even on a steel top table table saw top they will actually break in half if they hit the right way I've seen that many times where they've fallen on a concrete floor for example and they just they just break a steel bit of course would never do that so you have to be very careful these bits will stay sharp a very very long time but you have to be very careful if you're using them for making slots you need to go very slow and take a very small bite each time but they're primarily for drilling holes so that you can then cut a slot out well that concludes my video for today and as I said earlier just by your bits one at a time as you need them that way you'll save money and you'll get the best value out of your own router bits don't forget there will be an article on woodwork web but I'll put some links to some of the bits that I use so you'll be able to see a little bit more detail on those as well I'm Colin cadet for woodwork web thanks for watching you
