in today's video we are creating some gorgeous diy projects using the crafter square wooden planks these come from dollar tree and they come in two sizes and you get six pieces in each which makes each project very inexpensive i am so happy that dollar tree is putting these out i just feel like it gives us so many options and we're able to diy easier with a blank canvas rather than having to scrape off or redo all those little signs i'm so excited to go ahead and jump on into the video and show you all how i end up using these little wooden planks the first thing that i knew i had to try um whenever i was using these wooden planks was to use several of them to piece together to create a bigger sign i love making signs and if you followed me very long on this channel i make signs all the time out of dollar tree signs using seasonal ones and i have to scrape off everything that's on the sign so i was excited to be able to create my own with mostly dollar tree items like i said other than using this walmart paint stick they sell these in a pack of three for a little over a dollar so still very inexpensive but i did feel like it needed the support there if you wanted to substitute this with dollar tree items you could use some of the seasonal stakes like the yard stakes they put out you could pull that back piece off and that would be some long thin wood that you could use to connect all of these [Music] together i did try to space these out evenly and leave a little gap in between each plank so this does look more like a realistic palette sign and i just love how it turned out i didn't get the paint sticks perfectly even on the top and the bottom but you're really not going to be able to tell after you decorate it so i loved this home little wooden cutout word from dollar tree it was in the valentine decor i had not seen it anywhere yet so i was super excited to find that and i'll set that aside in the paint in just a second but first i wanted to go ahead and prep this sign i start by painting it with a super dark gray color it's the elephant waverly chalk paint and this is going to be a base color because i am going to kind of dry brush over this with white and i want a lot of that darker gray to show through if i put the white on the natural wood um you wouldn't really be able to see the contrast so i love the effect it gives whenever i do go over like the super dark with the white and i didn't let the gray dry 100 so you can see it is mixing in a little bit and i love that effect it gives it like a streak effect and it looks more kind of natural versus it just being really streaky so it looks really smooth and has those gorgeous lines coming through but then after it did dry i sanded a little bit on the edges so the gray would show through even more [Music] i stared at this home sign forever i could not decide if i wanted to paint it black or if i wanted to use that same super dark gray color and so you'll have to let me know in the comments down below what you would have painted this i just decided to go ahead and jump in and paint it black and i'm so happy i did because i feel like it really adds a lot of contrast it makes the home really pop off of that sign but i did leave the little heart so that i could paint it gray just to kind of soften the sign up a little bit and i'm really happy i did that because it kind of makes it all come together even though i have like the gray in the background the heart still pops out at you and then i love adding the stitching on everything you're probably tired of me adding this to so many projects but i think it is just adorable and i love it and i did feel like this sign needed something the black was washing out all of the letters and you really couldn't see the m and i was just scared that people weren't going to be able to tell um or that it wouldn't look like a real m so i used white paint marker to go around the home and then for the heart i used black sharpies because i knew the white wouldn't show up on the heart and then i'm flipping this over and using a stable gun clearly this is a brand new staple gun and i don't know how to use it just yet or how to line it up my old one was super wide so i missed the string a couple of times and my little strings were too short to tie so i ended up having to hot glue them and put a little bit of support down but it's still holding really nice and tight and then i found this boho ribbon at hobby lobby i'm not sure if it 100 goes with this sign but i was dying to use it and i think it looks really cute it has the browns and the grays or the blacks in there so i'm loving how it looks and i was gonna paint my wooden hanger but then i feel like it gives it a really cool contrast so let me know what you think [Music] next up i am using the more square wooden planks and i think this is my favorite project of this video i think it turned out really really pretty i was wanting to create like a farmhouse planter box and with this being like natural wood i knew i was going to be able to give it a stained effect so i was so excited i tried to be really really careful when i was constructing this that i didn't get a lot of hot glue on the outside so if i do kind of stain it and that doesn't mess it up now you will see i did have to try to glue these together with some of the tower blocks i stacked a few up and tried to line it up before i glued everything down and i am going to be connecting two sides and then put the whole box together so you'll have to kind of play around with this and see how yours fits together but to get mine in a complete square i had to tuck in a couple of the edges so you'll see what i mean in just a second and so really try to before you get everything glued down try to hold it together make sure it is going to be really square because on one side of the tower blocks i had to scoot it back and leave enough room for the edge of that wood piece so right there leave a little bit of space for that to set down on top of it because like i said it does have to overlap a little bit and this just made it square and fit flush together but i feel like the tower blocks worked perfect it made it super sturdy adding so many in there and then i do the same thing to add a bottom just set it on top of another square plank and then add in some more of those little blocks [Music] [Music] [Music] my walmart has been sold out of this antique wax for so long and i found this huge container of it the last time i went so i was so excited to use this so i do end up using it on a couple of my projects today but i love using this wax it works as a stain i hate staining in my craft room because it's really smelly and it just gets everywhere and you cannot get it off of your hands but this works so good so you just paint it on and then i use an old washcloth to kind of wipe off the excess and it gives it that um darkish stain look i just love it so much it worked perfect for these wooden planks because it really absorbed it like stain is supposed to work after constructing my wooden box i cut down styrofoam and put down in there and then i had to share these flowers with you all they are new for spring i guess at dollar tree but they are gorgeous i think they are some of the best flowers dollar tree has ever put out they have that like realistic not cheap looking greenery at the bottom they are just called wildflowers but they are beautiful i love the natural little white flowers at the top i'm pretty sure they had other colors um so i'll have to check but i bought like five picks and i think that's all my dollar tree had but i definitely want to look for some more because they have so many ideas for these i went ahead and cut mine off of the stems and with wire cutters so that i could tuck them around and make a pretty arrangement and then i tucked in just extra box wood that i had lying around in the bottom so you couldn't see the styrofoam and then i'm showing you a few options you could use you could paint that little magnet circle that dollar tree has or i had a galvanized flower from walmart that would work on the front i really wanted a charm but i decided to go with this wooden heart in these little wooden packs from dollar tree and i took it outside and sprayed it with some silver spray paint and then i'm giving it a galvanized look by kind of dabbing on the elephant dark gray as well as some of the white i make a cute little dainty jute string bow and hot glue that on there and then just attach it to the front and i feel like this is a gorgeous project that i definitely will be leaving out all [Music] you can't year enough of this [Music] next up i wanted to show you all another way you can use these wooden planks that i love using and that is whenever i pick up one of these small canvases from dollar tree and they won't stand up on their own and i hate hanging them on the wall they're just really small for the decor that i'm looking for so i love to make them freestanding i feel like it makes it look like a higher end piece and just really nicer overall so i'm using one of the longer planks i painted it with this medium color gray paint and then of course dry brush over that with my darker elephant color but i feel like it matches the um text and the little laundry picture that was on the sign so you really want to coordinate the color that you paint this with the photo that you're wanting to match it and then i hot glue it to the bottom and support it with some tower blocks i decided to add in a little bow for texture but i think it just really spices up all of these little cheap dollar tree scions and make them look so much nicer and so much easier for me to use [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i had to show you all if you wanted to make a mini sign and not piece a lot of these together what it would look like i love making these little mini signs for my tiered trays or attaching little beaded hangers to hang them kind of like off the hooks that i have on shelves throughout the house but um i wanted this to look like a tiny little framed sign and it turned out really really cute and so using one of the square wooden pieces as the background i just cut down to size some of these dollar tree popsicle sticks these are like the biggest popsicle sticks that dollar tree carries or that i have seen there and i'm trimming them down to fit all sides so you do have to cut two of them smaller to fit on the inside and then i wanted to cover this with some decorative scrapbooking paper and hobby lobby has this gorgeous cotton paper out and i used this a lot last year and it's a really fun and easy way to get a lot of texture and decorativeness um without having to do a lot of painting and stuff or going in and painting your own like faux barnwood or shiplap and then using that same antique wax which i guess i use on a lot more projects than i thought i did in this video but i paint those and let them completely dry and then glue them down in place i also added in this chalkboard tag that dollar tree carries that i love i made a little bow out of more jute string and then just using some dollar tree stickers that's how i decided to decorate mine if you didn't want to go that route you could just take a chalk pen and write what you wanted to but i feel like this was so cheap and this just looks really really cute on like i said a tiered tray [Music] and for number five i'm going to make a little riser um out of these planks i was dying to try this for a long time so i just had to see if it would work i ended up using four of these planks and i attached them to one so that's going to be the support but i do end up flipping these upside down and putting some little popsicles on the edges so it kind of wouldn't rock back and forth and it had some more support on the edges and there wouldn't be any gaps but these little risers are perfect for kind of elevating like candles and photo frames i wouldn't put a ton of weight on this one um but i feel like it was pretty sturdy at the end but like i said just adding in extra support with the popsicle sticks and then for the legs i'm using one of these little brain teasers it was kind of like in a cube whenever i purchased it but after you open it up and pull it apart you can cut it and then you get all of these big chunky blocks which would work perfect for crafting so i had to use those as the little feet and i feel like they're so much nicer than the little wooden blocks dollar tree has i put them in the four corners and then went over this with more of the antique wax [Music] i did kind of mess up on this project or kind of didn't get what i was originally going for but i thought i was gonna make a really cool pattern and paint like the big chunky stripe in the middle white and then give it like these two little lines on the edges and paint them white and i should have just knew from the start that the painters tape was not sticking to this antique wax very good i think it was still kind of damp not not dried all the way so um then i tried the hack of putting the mod podge over the tape to get like crisp lines but it was just bleeding underneath so i got like a super fuzzy white line and i knew that was not gonna work i was not gonna be happy with it so i decided i had to go ahead and dry brush over the entire thing with white paint now i originally thought this was something that i could do and let the dark brown show through so it kind of just worked out that's what i was having to do so after i got a lot of white paint on there i feel like it still needed some more detail so i had done this to a frame a few videos back and kind of changed up one of the dollar tree plastic frames by cutting some of the little wooden hair beads in half and it turned out so beautiful and i loved it so i was going to try this with some of my chunky beads and it also worked really really good um the antique wax doesn't soak into shiny wood so i figured it would be a waste of time trying to put the wax over these beads because they do have a lot of shine to them and they're coated in something so it's not like natural wood so i just dove in with the white paint and just tried to make it blend in as much as possible but i still feel like it turned out really good i love how chunky the white beads look and it had so much detail and like i said you can put mini plants or candles or photo frames but they always look so good and add so much detail to every space [Music] i enjoy the crafter square at dollar tree so much and i love all of the new items they are getting i cannot wait to make another one of my dollar tree road trips and see what else that i can get my hands on to craft with this year it is so much fun going to dollar tree not knowing what to expect and then coming home with some fun new craft supplies thank you all so much for coming along and crafting with me um i had so much fun putting together these projects using the wooden planks and definitely let me know in the comments down below which one of these projects was your favorite and if you enjoyed this video don't forget to hit the thumbs up button let me know because i would love to make some more items using these um but i tried to make a variety of different things not just signs not just planters or vases but um some different little things so definitely let me know which one that you liked and what you would make or what you have made out of these i'll leave that down in the comments down below so we can kind of inspire each other thank you all again for watching and i'll see you next time happy crafting [Music] bye
