so you've got your atmos system all set up but you're not sure if it's giving you the best performance hey team i'm josh in this video we'll look at five movies and the specific scenes that i use in my sound bar testing that give me the best atmos and i'll explain the different sounds you should be hearing it has to be said that there will be spoilers so skip ahead to the next movie using the chapters if you're intending to watch anyway let's get to it the first movie i always start with is ford vs ferrari there's plenty of awesome atmos scenes but the one i enjoy the most is the beginning of the final race there is so much to take in starting with ken miles navigating between cars as they all leave the pits further along you should hear the ferrari door fly overhead and then the debris moving from front right to back right as the car gets destroyed then a few seconds later his door opens with a lot more wind added to the soundtrack and another ferrari passes from left to right a little bit further on ken is battling with ferrari in the wet this is where you should feel immersed in the rain with the added sounds of the car as it screeches around the corner the brake pads add another layer to the audio and move from front to back as the car changes positions within the frame next up is michael bay's six underground this movie is absolutely crazy with all the stunts they pulled off and a great demo for your atmos system the first scene involves ryan reynolds flying an acrobatic plane which should give you a great sense of how sound can be moved within the 3d space close your eyes and listen to how the sound changes height within the room as the plane ascends and descends as well as the front to back movement with it flying past you it also has a nice kick drum in the background to test your sub the other scene i use all the time is nearing the end of the movie where ryan activates a super magnet and everything metallic on the boat goes flying there's plenty of detail in scene as people and objects are thrown across the deck a couple of sounds to listen for are the guns getting stuck underneath the over bridge the guy that lands in the pool and the cutlery as it gets stuck into the walls speaking of cutlery a couple minutes later the magnet is deployed again but in a more confined space and with more knives in the foreground and food as well as pots and pans in the background these scenes are a lot of fun and the whole movie is worth a watch for some brainless entertainment moving on to 1917 an atmos masterpiece this is one of those movies that benefits from having a large screen and a good sound system there's two scenes i want to touch on first is near the end of the film where lance corporal scofield is on the final stretch and delivering a message to colonel mckenzie not only can you hear the explosions at different distances but when the debris comes back down around lance corporal your surround system should make you feel as if you're there men's voices and whistles fade into the distance as the camera pulls away and then you're left with loud music that drowns out much of the details the second scene is about 15 minutes before but gives us a more isolated sound of single bullets flying past us as we rotate around the character then the river gets introduced which gives us a full 3d sound as if we were there with him the change in height of sound should be noticeable as the camera moves in and out of the water as well as lance corporal's breathing as he moves around on screen another great water scene is from the movie jungle cruise as the boat heads for the waterfall you get plenty of surround sound from the steam engine changing gears to the water brushing past the boat all to keep you immersed in the movie there's a bunch of spray that goes over the front of the camera which you should hear go right past you and as the steam pressure is released the sound comes from both front and back the final rotating shot fades the sound of the waterfall from right in front to the background but still keeps the rumble present near the end of the film there's a chase seen through the trees which involves the sound from bees and snakes flying past the camera then the final fight scene involves branches coming through the window and more bees flying around frank the ignition of the boiler should be felt through the sub which then blends into the melting bee wax that falls to the floor and the sound follows a little further on we have snakes falling out of the trees which should sound like they're falling down past your head followed by knives swinging from left to right and vice versa the whole final scene is filled with great sound effects and worth a watch and finally we have the blockbuster movie of 2021 dune we'll start with the worm attack on the spice crawlers this is an epic sequence that should give you a good sense of moving air around you when the thoppers take a dive and the soundtrack quietens you should be able to hear the wind swell around your head especially in the rear once they level out two of the thoppers come in front of the camera and the other one goes behind the sound will follow them accordingly as their flight comes to a halt great audio systems will be able to give you a large sound stage and there should be a big wall of sound in the front of the room later on in the scene paul is kneeling in the sand we hear a mixture of sand and people's voices rotating around him the rear speakers will be heavily used for the sequence as the sound envelops you the sam worm follows us with a big thump and bass to end the scene we see the worm consuming the spice crawler which again should have sounds coming from all directions now before we finish i just want to touch on the ways you can experience these films and atmos currently apple movies netflix with a premium plan disney plus and vudu are the available streaming services and then blu-ray discs for physical media please don't watch these scenes on youtube if you're wanting to test your system as they won't be an atmos with that i've got a video coming out soon that'll explain where to place your surround speakers for the best atmos performance so if that's of interest to you then please subscribe anyway that's all from me see you guys soon you
