the three most common problems with a 4l60 e fried 3/4 clutch back broken drive shell worn TCC regulator valve let's look at the symptoms what failed and why the most common problem with a foil 60 e and number 1 on our list is failure of the 3/4 clutch pack the symptoms are no 3rd gear you put the vehicle and drive start off the transmission shifts to second gear fine but when it should go to third the engine runs away as if it's in neutral let's see what's wrong take the bell off pull the pan take out the filter take the solenoids out fold the poem pull the drone separate the drone here's the burned up 3/4 clutch pack but what caused it here's the real problem the 3/4 piston rubber seals shrink from heat and age hydraulic pressure blows around it and the clutch pack fries you need a new piston and a clutch pack like these the second most common problem with the 4l60e is a broken drive shell the symptoms are when in drive you have first gear only no shift to second and no reverse let's see what happened open it up like we did before after the drums are removed remove this snap ring pull out the planetary gearset remove the input ring gear and here's the problem the broken drive shell here's the rest of it it's supposed to be one piece it should look like this not only can the shell break off it can also strip out the splines like this one the symptoms are the same once again a new healthy drive shell looks like this the third most common problem is a worn TCC regulator valve the symptoms are the check engine light is on the shift a second is so hard it feels like a shift kit has been installed and a diagnostic scan comes up code 1870 internal slippage the problem is in the valve body let's look pull the pan pull the filter remove the solenoids and wiring harness remove the valve body bolt lift the valve body and turn it over the TCC regulator valve is located here it wears out as bore and causes the converter clutch to slip the computer senses this sets the trouble code turns the check engine light on and maxes out the electronic pressure control that's why the shifts get hard your repair choices are get the so next brand oversized replacement valve and reamer like these or use this spring which comes in high quality rebuild kits you just remove the clip in plug and valve assembly replace the spring and replace the valves plug and clip this essentially fixes the problem by covering it up the spring prevents the valve from moving this usually stops leakage code eighteen seventy and hard shifting thank you for watching I hope this has helped
