48 HOURS IN LILLE - ft. The 12 Best Restaurants & Bars (France's Unsung Hero)

hello he's licked lick the camera you give it a good clean just give it a good clean i'm jesse behind the camera is will and together we are top jaw now we haven't been abroad together in a long time but we are finally somewhere where we can't speak the language well we are back in france in lille which i kind of feel is like paris is more laid-back younger cousin big thanks to hello lil for putting this together super close to belgium and it's kind of a hybrid of the two you can see that in the architecture the attitude here and of course the copious amount of beer it's very strong beer it's an hour and a half from london quicker to get here than many places in the north of england and it is hella different [Music] she dropped our bags in the uber cool mama shelter and it's a bit early but i think it's time for some lunch maybe a little blond beer some little blonde lads in mama shelter restaurant got some little sharers little finger foods fried squid with spicy mayo flaffle some fries with some local cheese called marwa and mama's croque monsieur we said we wanted one of those will we're going straight in with the good stuff cheers bro it's the light lunch then mate cheesy and buttery french night of cooking they've got a huge club we're 15 kilometers from belgium here in lille so naturally there's a lot of good beer flying around i really want today and this whole trip really to be as french as it could possibly get will so french [Music] this little square here is the absolute centre of lille and the architecture is exactly what i wanted she's finding it a bit nippy as well i think [Music] down yet another little beautiful cobbled street we're here for olga the carousel burg again french accent but this lovely little fine pastry shop the speciality here is something called the petit pusher translated to little chicks don't know why there's no chicken them vanilla and orange blossom cream oh that's a bit of me oh that's beautiful a strawberry and pistachio pavlova my absolute childhood doc dessert of choice oh come on well a few places in the world where they serve pastries like they're tiffany engagement rings from one bakery to another but they are very different this isn't there you've got to get a hold of yourself the facade and the interior are stunning and remarkably unchanged from when it was first opened in 1849 these guys make an iconic waffle that's gorgeous and it's going to go very well with this here espresso stay at that nose yeah well you know you've got to do what you're doing yeah it comes with territory bro crap will damage got a lot of sugar in my system just caught into my veins makes you get a present for the girls so as it turns out we actually did get presents for the girls all by our design they will do you pick wisely uh yeah um do you have any idea what's in them no were they given to you and now you're going to re-gift it not know how to mouse eight percent will no messing yeah like pints of wine cheers one prayer cheers buddy what your beards look like milk mango milk short little walk down from that cathedral we're at the capsule these guys have more craft beers on tap than i have pairs of pants i've gone for baraka an american ipa nice and chilled five percent that's lovely go for alice dog another ipa a bit more punchy eight and a half percent that's lovely we went with the regress no way which is sour boy and that's kind of strong at like seven percent that really gets to get used to and a smashbox that's the bully that you want to avoid at fourteen and a half percent this is a belgian strong dark ale and it is strong and then it's dark right about 10 minute cab out of lille to this place we're in the outer skirts of town at this old textile factory for brick house brick house car two guys who absolutely loved craft beer they learned about brewing and started brewing loads of craft beer right here oh he's doing the thing again they paired up with papa raphael which is like the primo pizza place in lille it's because i've got white trousers on still lively with my legs oh mate these are actually naughty boys bro okay so we've wanted a yankee trouble and an under acid oh stickers a yankee trouble and an under acid ipa sour boy actually this is a knife all the beers served here are brewed on site in those big tanks they're unpasteurized through those taps past our eyes and into our gobs [Music] this pizza is lenored which is after a very famous northern french food dish which is essentially like a cheese soup melty cheese bread ham onion the works and this is leprechaun spicer boy beautiful that's so easy to drink the yankee trouble under acid i'm not into it as much as the ipa those who like their kind of fruity ciders you'd be really into the sour beers it's not the ipa that i live and breed will you try that brilliant cheers yankee trouble i can't pull this down my trousers for days a b-e-a-a beautiful ipa that slips down faster than your nan's knickers brilliant sorry [Music] there's a lot of beer here i love that like a lot of beer places don't just have like a handful of beers on tap they have more taps than they have patrons but they're strong bye everybody catches up on you there he is how you feeling well all right bro i'm all right what are we doing today today we're visiting a couple of micro breweries all right yeah absolutely and uh we're going to a market we're going to a couple of food courts big energy big atmosphere big assortment of food banging top jaw content will that is phenomenal probably one of the best coffees of 2021 well not the best yeah it is really good their magic beans are doing it for me we love espresso we love coffee we love good coffee shops and we've sniffed out the best one in lille tampa exclamation mark packing it down packing down the ground in the portafilter that's called tampering tampa very lovely bristolian as well that works here which is really good for our french yeah straightforward smells illegal yeah beautiful mate a little oatmeal banger oatmeal banger for the lads banger for the lads there aren't that many espresso style coffee bars in lille but we do know that tampa is a brilliant [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the building behind me used to be a very premium upmarket department store but about a year ago they turned it into a food court making it a bit more top-jaw ready this is the grand sun or as we all like to call it the grand scene the grand sea food courts are great we love a food court sit relax have a couple of beers and grades buying a bit from lots of different food vendors you don't need to stick to one never stick to one have you have you got any beer that's under 10 alcoholic volume no there's no one there mate you told me to do it first through the day yeah it's after midday so we can stick a pail for the mail down my mouth we have three beautiful colorful packed tacos from la gorita i can't believe it very well we have a margarita though we like the large rice it's giving us it's given us ideas doesn't it fish balls kind of looks like apple but it's from mercy good flavors strong this right here we're very excited about this is the big bountiful ceviche fish taco shocker blocker how about a pork taco oh yeah that was very good but henry viii just gorging right i think the tank is full well that was a good feed well a food tank's full mate that is a good point general attack's never full what do you do when you're in the middle of lille and you own a townhouse a big townhouse kind of live in it and have some really epic parties or you can turn it into a brewery a micro brewery and have some really epic parties we're doing a beer tasting and we have nine beers in funtime they all sound very exciting and learning more about what a double ipa is basically it means it's very strong the session ipa that's the far more relaxed gentleman's beer that you can drink all day or we can just try drinking double ipa all day and see that takes us so this is brewed with lychee rose and poppy seed called the heroine awesome double ipa means just double the strength not necessarily double the hops as the x salt is brewed with orange blossom that is my favorite this is ladies given that name because it's made with 10 different hops local hops german hops uk hops and the first one was brewed in this tank here it's the first beer that amari ever produced and it's his best seller blonde baby i'm feeling very heady um well i think we're sort of you know done here for beers if not that was awesome every saturday sometimes in the weekdays you get a full lesson on how you brews beer as well as a tasting session if you fancy just sampling some of the beer like we have you shop down there sells it all tuesday through saturday all day fill up a case you gotta have the ginger one i like that one we're exploring a new city new town we'd like to find those streets that are the if in doubt go to streets rue royale is exactly that it's that you can't go wrong kind of street we're here for bear brick this place is a very pink very minimalist flemish restaurant i pulled it as a push [Music] help the male coming right up in this pale pink palace beer wick a flemish term for beer body they have blond beers white beers ipa pales on tap i'm just laughing the variety of beer bro very cool in here but i fancy watching me a while go by what'd you say will we got zucchini caviar some local cheeses little heritage tomatoes some sort of pepperoni sausage and some beautiful bread this is great mate what the devil is this big thing here a little homemade fries with some local cheese super strong when it's raw but when it's cooked it's nice and mellowed down this is from beach like a pizza with lamb smoked cheese and this is courgette flour tempura oh boy we're in a new part of lille not new to them new to us this is muck and we are here for la frisch about a 10 minute cycle car ride away from the center of lille this place is worth making the journey for four food vendors in there two bars good music and a hell of a good time let's kick the bloody doors off of which there is none [Music] i got a big pint of moscow mule brother with a couple of wheat straws looking after the world one cocktail at a time this is philippe starred lafrish owner of lafrish and he's giving us a tour going for a sergeant pepper and a dirty barbecue we've got texas barbecue sauce with very crispy grilled bacon cheese salad and their big contour hash burger yeah boy it's been a long time it's not a good burger like a long time this one is a sergeant pepper pepper sauce on a cheeseburger oh mama yeah because they like grill the cheese you basically was a little grilled cheese bits throughout which is beautiful things this is legal toilet cute little caravan serving up frets and legends i've got to order in french because apparently the guy doesn't see any english and that's fair enough because we are friends go one more extra spot yes sexy business and in here we have truffle cheese we have bacon rather than ham and we have egg and some other good cheesy business oh good and this one is the snickers caramel chocolate mousse chocolate sauce and some peanuts dessert to warm the soul will dessert to warm the soul hello it's licked lick the camera you give it a good clean give it a good clean just on a little road off the ground plus we have just [Music] this is a bakery owned and run by damien and constance they launched last year one week before the lockdowns began but they've survived and they thrived and we're here for some little bunch of baked goods and some of their beautiful coffee which we've heard is pretty top-notch [Music] day three third and final day we've done a bit of a 48 hours bridged over three days what's in the kishman today is great we've got almond cream hazelnut mousse jean duja which is like a combination of chocolate hazelnut icing sugar got some plum and some actual whole hazelnut on it yep very good very good indeed my man [Music] some of you may know that i am super into cars well i know cool facts about the citroen 2tv will so when i heard that we were going to have a tour of lille in a french car from the 1960s i was particularly excited post second world war they had a lot of scrap metal and everything they didn't know what to do with it they turned them into these this is archie not the car the bloke and he is our tour guide for today gonna drive us around lil and show us a lot of the historic landmarks and tell us some stories on how lil has got to where it is today we're having a great time in the 2cv and we've been into that whoa now i've got to get out and walk this is babe it's a relaxed yet very high-end restaurant specializing in meat and beer we're about to meet tevo the owner and he's going to sit have lunch with us we're all this is our final meal of our little trip oh mate and then back to london but i think it's going to be a belter so we have to let us burn this is it cooking this is bone marrow so served within the bone i think it's gonna be delicious and i think that's what this spoon is for pig's ears and i can't tell you how smoky and like paprika this smells beautiful putin a french canadian kind of dish 24 hours in cambridge got a hung out to dry and they commented out and i'm very sorry to all the french canadians out there this is actually made using cheddar from our country and their gravy that they make with all the bones from all the meat that's gorgeous [Music] i did say this was a meat restaurant that's exactly what we got beef elbow big hunky steak cooked beautifully rare just how this guy likes it oh boy tata fish roe seaweed and in the middle of it is some cheese you know babe's kind of own version of it yeah how's it go it was like whipped cheese loads of chives bunyan beautiful it's incredible tebow thank you very much [Music] met some awesome people had some great beer some fantastic food gonna be sad to leave very sad mate but home's only an hour and a half away so we can always pop back in our time big thanks to hello lil and the guys there and
