[Music] [Music] good morning and welcome to washington national cathedral on this thursday april the 7th i'm rose duncan cannon for worship and i'm so pleased that you are joining us this morning for the service of prayer and reflection jesus said if anyone will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me let us pray blessed are you god of compassion and mercy to you be praised and glory forever in the darkness of our sin your light breaks forth like the dawn and your healing springs up for deliverance as we rejoice in the gift of your saving help sustain us with your bountiful spirit and open our lips to sing your praise in jesus name we pray amen hear these words from a portion of psalm 105 search for the lord and his strength continually seek his face remember the marvels he has done his wonders and his judgments of his mouth o offspring of abraham his servant o children of jacob his chosen he is the lord our god his judgments prevail in all the world he has always been mindful of his covenant the promise he made for a thousand generations the covenant he made with abraham the oath he swore to isaac which he established as a statute for jacob an everlasting covenant for israel saying to you will i give the land of canaan to be your allotted inheritance glory to the father and to the son and to the holy spirit as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever amen the reading comes from the eighth chapter of the gospel of john jesus said very truly i tell you whoever keeps my word will never see death the jew said to him now we know that you have a demon abraham died and so did the prophets yet you say whoever keeps my word will never taste death are you greater than our father abraham who died the prophets also died who do you claim to be jesus answered if i glorify myself my glory is nothing it is my father who gives me he of whom you say he is our god though you do not know him but i know him if i would say that i do not know him i would be a liar like you but i do know him and i keep his word your ancestor abraham rejoiced that he would see my day he saw it and was glad then the jew said to him you are not yet 50 years old and you have seen abraham jesus said to them very truly i tell you before abraham was i am so they picked up stones to throw at him but jesus hid himself and went out of the temple in our reading jesus continues to challenge the jewish authorities about his identity they continue to misunderstand the real meaning of what he says whoever keeps my word will never taste death they can only understand in a literal sense but they do understand the implication of jesus's words he is claiming to be more than abraham or any of the prophets and they ask who do you claim to be when jesus responds he does not address their criticism of him rather he speaks about his father and then notes that they do not know the father although they think they do then jesus goes too far with the provocative statement very truly i tell you before abraham was i am again we have jesus using the term i am and notice that jesus does not say before abraham i was he says before abraham i am the first person to hear these words was moses in exodus god said to moses i am who i am thus you shall say to the sons of israel i am has sent me to you. john's gospel is the only one to have the i am statements and there's seven of them this is john's presentation of jesus these i am statements make known jesus as the source of life and abundant grace and they signal the very presence of god the religious leaders listening to jesus proclaimed these words know right away that jesus was claiming to be god and anyone claiming to bear the divine name of god would incur only one punishment death by stoning this was the punishment for blasphemy and it is no wonder that they picked up stones to throw at him yes they understood clearly that jesus was claiming to be god and while they didn't believe him they were also frightened frightened of the power and influence he had with many of the people he encountered jesus was becoming popular admired and sought after he was undermining the jewish leader's credibility with the people jesus was becoming a significant threat to the power and influence of these officials clearly their hearts were closed to jesus today might be a good day for us to examine our hearts we may have closed minds or closed hearts to jesus because of some way life is painful and we've had to struggle but can we identify those places have we distanced ourselves from jesus today i invite you to stop and reflect on who jesus is to you at this time in your life and to remember that he is always right beside us amen let us offer the prayers of our hearts to god that this and all our days may be full of your praise we pray to you o lord that you will keep us this day without sin we pray to you o lord that we may walk before you in the paths of righteousness and peace we pray to you o lord that you will bless your people and lift them up forever we pray to you o lord that you will guide and protect us by your holy spirit and bring us with your saints to eat glory everlasting we pray to you oh lord let us commend ourselves and all for whom we pray to the mercy and protection of god through jesus christ who taught us to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil but thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen oh god you have called us to be your children and have promised that those who suffer with christ will be heirs with him of your glory arm us with such trust in him that we may ask no rest from his demands and have no fear in his service through jesus christ our lord who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen grant almighty god that your people may recognize their weakness and put their whole trust in your strength so that they may rejoice forever in the protection of your loving providence through christ our lord amen [Music] [Music] you
