today i'm going to help you answer the question should i buy a high mileage used car or truck and the answer is that depends well you might say gee thanks scotty big help ed that depends on what well i'm gonna show you on what depends on what kind of mileage what kind of vehicle is it rusted has it been wrecked you need to figure out what kind of shape to use vehicles in take this 014 runner i made a video with the other day now yes it has a lot of mileage as we go inside check it out 386 000 miles but then again it's a toyota it's pretty much the original owner he bought it when it was a year old with like 12 000 miles on it and it's always been a tennessee vehicle so no rust check it out you want to check out rust get a hammer and go under the vehicle here's the frame listen to this rock solid straight as can be nothing's rotting on this baby if you look at a high mileage vehicle or any vehicle for that matter and the frame's rotten the fender wells are rotten run away because just like neil young sang ages ago rust never sleeps keeps going the only way you can fix is by cutting it out the frame's rot you're gonna have to replace the frame to do it right don't buy a car like that but if it's clean like this one even with the mileage this has on it with the way that it runs i would have no qualms of buying this vehicle getting it now in tennessee and driving at the california in back these toyotas especially the four runners with the full frame they're all made in japan excellent vehicles the higher model is like 386 you're not going to pay a fortune for it but on the other hand it's going to last a long time but let's say this was a chrysler truck and it had maybe only 220 instead of 380 i wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole odds are some serious stuff's gonna go wrong with it soon if it hadn't already so you don't want to mess around with the wrong vehicle do a little research don't buy a problem car as i've always told people a lot of it depends on price and what you're going to do with the vehicle let's say you want a knock around truck to use once in a while or a van to haul stuff once in a while hey maybe you'd buy some old chrysler van since they were so horrible the resale value is almost nothing and if it runs and drives okay and you're only putting a little mileage i got customers with those things they bought them for 600 bucks and two or three years later they're still driving them half the stuff doesn't work but it still drives and runs if you don't care about something like that go ahead just don't buy a cheap high mileage vehicle like that and expect to get 20 000 miles a year driving it that would not make any sense but this toyota the shape that it's in yeah no problem going 20 000 miles a year for years and years and years and years because think about it you're going 65-70 it's not shifting you got 70 mile an hour wind cooling the engine it's just puttering along at a nice rpm it's not shifting gears there's very little wear on a vehicle when you're going at highway speeds so there's nothing wrong with buying a quality car that's got a lot of highway mileage on it still with high mileage they're gonna go cheaper there's no arguing how much money is somebody gonna pay for a car that's got two or three hundred thousand miles but even here you still have to think of the quality of the car my father-in-law years ago bought an oldsmobile it was a salesman's car at the company that he was vice president of things fell apart he bought it like 130 000 miles it was a 1980s oldsmobile it wasn't that well made it's when they started to go to front-wheel drive and they screwed everything up so you always have to take in consideration the style of car that you're looking at even if it's highway mileage the basic car is always important this is a 2007 toyota camry my son bought it gave it to my grandson grandson takes very little care hardly any maintenance at all as you can kind of tell by the bird poop on the door and the interior's a bit ragged too but what happens when you turn the key it's a toyota it starts right up and to prove my point even further we'll open the hood up which of course doesn't stay up because the struts are hauling up or worn out he just uses a stick it has that 2007 2.4 toyota engine that's notorious for burning oil that's the one thing he does do he checks the oil yes it burns oil so he's been adding oil for years but you heard how good it still runs even with the defective piston rings this thing is still purring along like a kitten but really for toyotas this is just a baby it's only got 149 000 miles on it defected piston rings and all still runs like a clock it's been whacked a few times repainted poorly and that's the end result and recently it just ran into a goat tore some of that off well i guess that just shows that i'm in tennessee now because that wouldn't happen in downtown houston i never saw any goats except at the houston livestock and rodeo show now of course when you're looking at a high mileage vehicle it's very important to either have your own scan tool or pan mechanic with a scan tool to analyze it for a bunch of reasons the main reason being maybe there's hidden problems if you watch my video i did the other day on this four runner the only problem i found was the right rear speed sensor wasn't working so the abs system wasn't working correctly everything else was working perfectly fine you can't hide that stuff from a computer people can take the check engine light bulb or a modern car led they can break it with a little ice pick so the light won't come on you won't know anything's wrong until you plug one of these on but here's a quick tip when you're looking at a vehicle all you want to do is turn the key to the on position and when you do you should see the check engine light come on now of course when you start it it should go off but if you do turn the key on and the check engine light doesn't come on generally that means somebody either took the bulb or the led out or the system has a problem and when they have problems sometimes the check engine light won't work at all quick test light doesn't come out when you turn the key on walk away don't even think about buying it there's too many ifs with something like that and what's the other advantage of a scan tool guess what these things have the real mileage on them when you put them in it'll show you what the real mileage of the vehicle is running off the computer doesn't matter if the clowns went out and got a dash from a different vehicle with lower mileage on it this thing's going to tell you the truth about what actual mileage the vehicle has on it and of course you want some kind of proof that a high mileage vehicle hasn't been in a bunch of wrecks and stuff always demands to see the title if the title says reconditioned salvage title was totaled at some point in time by an insurance company somebody fixed it as poorly or as well as they decided to and sold it on to the next person i tend to stay away from such high mileage vehicles because you never know what the history of it was unless you knew the person let's say it was totaled by an insurance company because it got hail damage and there's dimples on it if you don't care about dimples what the heck or maybe they had the dimples fixed that you wouldn't care about but there's often hidden stuff if you find out that the vehicle has been wrecked recently my advice walk away and whether you want a scan tool and know how to operate it or not these things can get you a ton of information pay a guy like me if you're worried if not get your own scan tool you don't have to buy a 4 000 one like this a really nice 99 dollar blue driver to get you a lot of information and it just runs off of your phone so you don't have to buy the hardware you're just buying a software and the dongle that plugs in you can learn quite a bit about reading the data seeing what trouble codes are do or not exist you can miss a lot of things without hooking a scan tool up and it works so fast they say get one learn if you don't want to do that pay a guy like me because there's a lot of high mileage cars out there that are in excellent shape and there's a lot of clunkers too now here's an example of a possible high mileage vehicle that you might want to buy but then you're going to complain it's too expensive the classic toyota tacoma if you can find when it's in really good shape to buy used yes you're gonna pay more for it because they can last so long it's very common for these things to go more than 500 000 miles if you take care of them let's say you found over 200 000 miles on you got to pay more than you want to what if it makes it to 500 000. man did you get a deal because you're certainly not going to pay anywhere near the original price and if you still have another 300 000 miles left you're making out like a gangbuster but let's say you can't find it in your price range a nice tacoma you could look at ford rangers you could look at nissan frontiers they're decent trucks and you're going to pay a lot less form used there's no arguing that but especially when it comes with used pickup trucks listen to me seriously here don't pinch pennies if you're planning on saving a whole bunch of dollars maybe it's a thousand dollars more than you'd like to spend but it's the toyota tacoma it checks out good believe me just spend it and don't worry and here comes another tip about high mileage vehicles you want to pick up truck get a rear-wheel drive one like this if you're buying a high-mileage used 4x4 there's a lot of expense in repairing 4x4 equipment so much so that i have had customers have me remove the front wheel drive shafts on their 4x4 truck and only run on the rear because they didn't want to spend the kind of money it cost to fix a 4x4 this whole four runner it's only rear-wheel drive it's two-wheel drive it doesn't have all that stuff on it now what rolled by another perfect high-mileage used vehicle it's a toyota tundra it's got 350 000 miles and it was just used you can see on the back to pull a cadillac from california to tennessee and it had no problems at all yes you're gonna pay more for a tundra but if they hold up like that like i say don't pinch pennies to save dollars you pay a little bit more if you're driving that thing for decades you're gonna thank scotty for saying there's nothing wrong with buying a high mileage toyota truck no i don't advise this but the man who owns this truck is a bit of a mad man and he once towed a total of 18 000 pounds with this thing and it made it where it was gone the engine didn't go the trending and gone and amazingly enough the tires didn't blow either and some of that was even done off-road i told you it was a madman but for a madman he's got the right truck a toyota tundra that he bought for his son when his son was 16 now since 24 and he's using the people i just want to buy and he says nah i'll have this thing taken to my grave with me as long as it keeps going but of course you don't want to buy a high mileage vehicle that's somebody else's problem and now make it yours that's why you need to do the things i said in this video comprehend a little about what kind of vehicle are you looking at highway mods city mileage is the frame rot and is there rust on it a lot of stuff that you can easily check yourself even before you take it to a mechanic because i've had a lot of customers bring me vehicles i immediately look at it it's a rust bucket don't buy it they wasted their time and energy taking it to me you can do the smallest checks first the simple things you got a scan tool you can get some really good ideas then bring it to a mechanic for a final check that's the absolute safest way of doing it because high mileage vehicles some of them out there are a dream come true and some of them are your worst nightmare a real sweet dream like this 2001 4runner with 386 000 miles on it do not poo poo a vehicle like this so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell you
