hi i'm dr marcos c santiago that's mcs for short and in today's video we're going to talk about the masks that i wear when i'm outside the house as well as when i'm on duty in the hospital [Music] so contrary to popular belief we radiologists are not just confined within our rooms and our workstations facing the computer we also get to have a lot of interactions with our patients as well as with other doctors so that means we're also at risk of contracting the covid19 virus so during the start of the pandemic what i use was this mass the surgical mask so when you wear it it doesn't really form a tight fit around the nose and the mouth so it becomes problematic when you're using goggles or facial because everything becomes foggy aside from that this mask are not that efficient in terms of filtering the virus but it's a good last resort so because of the issues with the surgical mask eventually we were given n95 mass respirator masks that are graded n95 during our duties so that one so for those of you that are not familiar with the niosh classification and means that this mass is not resistant to oil and it offers 95 uh filtration efficiency rate so what's nice about this mass is that it really forms a tight fit around your nose and mouth so you're sure that particles won't really be coming into your airway this plus it minimizes the fogging effect seen in goggles and face shield but one disadvantage that i don't like about this mast is because of the tight fit and that metallic portion near the nasal bridge it becomes painful with prolonged use so notice i want you to look at my nose look at that marking there so that's the effect of prolonged use of the masks another problem with this mass was that because of the demand was so high during the early days of the pandemic here in the philippines it was quite hard to procure this mass plus the cost was almost doubled or tripled the price and i think even right now it's still quite expensive so because of the issues i encountered with the n95 mast so what i did was i bought an elastomeric face mask from 3m so this one this one is a half case mass from 3m 7502 model so it's the 7000 series there so what i like about this mass is that it forms aside from forming a tight seal around your nose and mouth like this um it has a rubber rubbery silicone lining so it's really not that painful so it's really nice when you're gonna use this mask for long periods of time so basically air goes into this side air enters this side and then into this area so that you can breathe and exits through this hole now this respirator masks have face mask comes with this one these are your pancake filters so not this it's there's p100 written there so meaning is resistant very resistant to oil plus the fact that it's 100 so meaning it's 100 efficient infiltrating particles so what you do is basically you just attach it to the sides and that's basically it then you wear it like that so one of the issues that i found with this mask is that prolonged use eventually results into accumulation of water droplets in this area right here okay so um i remember i was with i was talking to a patient and then what's funny was that water was actually dripping out of the exhaust of this mast so the what's alarming there is that what if you have the virus so you run the risk of transmitting it to other people through those droplets so that's one issue another issue that i found are the filters of course you could buy the expect more expensive ones the one with the cartridges but for me i bought this one the cheaper one so um it's quite soft and another problem is that it gets folded and it's really not that hard so you run the risk of damaging these filters this was my solution this one and this one so basically these are 3d printed cartridges and filters um i'll link in the description below the name of the company so basically this one this guy right here you put it at the exhaust of the half face mask and and then you'll hear that pop and basically you can put something like a gauze or maybe a surgical face mask and then you could put put it inside this one so basically the purpose here is you're actually preventing air sorry water from dropping out of that exhaust filter preventing the spread of infection if ever you have the virus and next are the filters so basically it's quite easy you just open this like this and then you put the pancake filter inside and then you close it so what's nice about this one is whenever you disinfect your pancake filters you won't be soaking you won't be soiling that pancake filter because it's practically made of cloth outside so you're gonna clean this part which is made of plastic and then you attach it to your masks and the attachment is quite easy plus you don't get to touch the contaminated portion by the way mind you this is an original design made but by that 3d printing company so again i'm endorsing their services to you guys if you if ever you're using the pancake filters so it's like this it looks like this and that's it i can still breathe readability is okay so that wraps up this week's video so what do you guys think what filters and mass are you using i'm actually curious so please tell me in the comment section below at the end of the day i think it's really not about the type of mass or the brand of the mass that you're using it's more of the act of doing something to protect yourself to protect your family to protect your loved ones as well as the people around you it's more of the act of doing something to control the spread of infection so please do your part and wear your mask so if this video helped you in any way don't forget to hit the like and subscribe button also include the notification bell so that you'll be notified whenever i post a new content thank you for watching and then i'll see you on the next video bye you
