.338 Win Mag - Ammo Test [And Fail]

[Music] hey everybody how you doing this is about to be a really fun video out at the range today with my 338 bag when you have a hunting rig like this you need to find the blue lights that it loves the best that's what we're doing today 338 win mag it's not the easiest to find but this is what i was able to put together we got some federal some norma and some more federal stuff is not easy to find and when you do find it it's not the cheapest stuff but so we got uh some federal premium trophy copper 225 grain i'll show you one of those quick here's what they look like 225 grain coppers i'm honestly not normally a fan of coppers i've never had a bing bang that like to copper blue lots i understand some of y'all in some states gotta use those but they've never been good luck to me oh but that's actually what i sided this rifle in with next we got some norma 338 win mag oryx this stuff i think should be pretty good stuff let me find you one to show you this is a lead nose if you're a hunter like me and you've ever used some of this uh you know the normal auric stuff is some pretty good stuff i've taken a psychedeer with this ammo i'll pop you up a picture right here and i've taken a hog with this 338 win mag and this orex ammo neither one of them really went anywhere to say the least i'll show you that clip of that hog [Applause] [Applause] anyways um long story short well let me finish telling you about the ammo the third one is the federal fusion how heavy are these probably 225 too yeah these are 225s too if y'all can see that let me show you one of these we gotta show you one we gotta show you them all similar look to those ortix lead tip hunting around there but i know a lot of you guys are federal fusion junkies so there's probably a handful you guys rooting for these but like i said we've got to find the best ammo that this setup likes this is my thompson center compass 2 in 338 win mag to my knowledge they only made 500 of these and i got a heck of a deal for 250 beans on this thing brand new on top i've got a crimson trace hardline pro with 20 zoomies we'll go ahead and crack it up to 20 zoomies and we're just going to run down the line here i'm going to start with the normal so let me load up three enormous get the camera down range there at 100 yards we're going to take our time focus on our trick or squeeze here a lot of y'all been complaining at me for using the lead sled so i actually brought out a bipod and a sandbag today try to do some precision perfection stuff best i can but yeah 338's one of my favorites uh absolutely love it it's got a threaded barrel i'm trying to get us a shusher for that thing uh should be a hoot but let me load up some of this norma first and we'll get to slaying them see if i can find which boat lots my thompson center compass 2 338 wind mag likes the best this is going to be a whole lot fun all right here we go ready to party i'm wearing my new hearing protection this is the axle gs extreme 2.0 i started wearing these because it has even more decibel reduction than the muffs i typically wear if you haven't checked out axles i'll put links somewhere where you can find it but they're giving the mine about death these are those 230 grain normal oryx like i said i'm gonna slow down take my time here and just try to do this justice so we can try to find which ammo my 338 win bag likes best so i'm gonna shush myself up here and just slow down see what we can do triggers on these are not fantastic but they're not terrible let's see what we can do here we didn't load them gotta pull that bolt all the way back [Applause] all right so this point of impact is a little bit off from where it was sighted in with some other ammo let's see what kind of group we get out of it [Applause] not looking great so far [Applause] all right so two of those were within an inch of each other that was the norma now let's go to the federal fusion next let me load three of those all right next let's send three of these federal fusions like i said i know a bunch of you guys are big federal fusion fans if you're a federal fusion fan i filmed a video with 25.6 federal fusion at a thousand yards believe it or not if you haven't seen that video go check it out but here goes three federal fusions and 338 win mag [Applause] hmm i wonder if impact is good on our bulls out here see if we can do that two more times [Applause] holy mackerel those were not even close yikes either this uh scope is moving around on us which i don't think it is i torqued it myself or it really doesn't like the federal fusion that's pretty crazy spread at 100 yards [Applause] that one was closer to the first one now if this third one does terrible groups as well i might have to remount this scope but i really took my time on mounting this scoop here [Applause] and they're good wheeler rings i mean [Applause] it was like three in the morning i think when i mounted the scope so maybe i wasn't paying attention let's see what it thinks about these uh federal premium trophy coppers 225 grain 100 yards i've hunted with this in the past like i said my memory says i got pretty decent groups but let's see where this hits [Applause] we're flinging like eight inch groups at 100 yards that's terrible so man i'm gonna go ahead and pull the plug on this one and uh i'm gonna recheck all this but just sitting here and that's tight it's tight as all can be i cannot move that the scope hasn't moved in the rings hmm look we're going to redo it and try it again but hey there's my 338 win mag ammo test it's not looking so good so far but i'm gonna go ahead and measure those i don't know if my calipers go that far but we're gonna do it anyways i'll get you back in the house and we'll take a closer look at those groups all right guys so back at the house and i measured those groups but before i show you the measurements let me show you the clip from when i first got this 338 win mag and my very first time sighting it in check out this footage first time i sighted this one in [Applause] well that sucker kicked hard i forgot how hard it kicked in the past two minutes [Applause] let's uh send two more here [Applause] this is one of the more expensive rounds to shoot here we don't want to burn up a ton of ammo but if we're going hunting with it we got to know it's dead on so let's squeeze off another one same holy same hole you cannot keep keep your eye on the target with this it just kicks you off every time let's see where this one is and we might make one final adjustment [Applause] three in the same hole okay that's what this stuff can do okay so man that gets me excited i'm ready to hit the hunting woods three in the same hole 338 wind mag 200 rifle let me uh before i go down there and we show up close i'm gonna go ahead and click this to the left two times so you can see there when i first got that thing and first sighted it in i was putting them in the same hole so i had a different scope on it different rings but we were actually using that same norma ammo that i used today so that being said i know for a fact that that 338 likes that norma ammo but ah let's get into a little bit let me show you what happened terrible results at the range today so i'm not even going to talk about this very long but here's the norma 230 grain that's the stuff that that 338 liked in that footage i just showed you from two years ago was putting them in the same hole today 2.5 inch groove [Applause] then we move over here to the what is this stuff the 235 grain federal trophy copper look at that all over the place a 6.25 inch group and then not much better the federals the federal fusions did a five and a half inch group so pretty much terrible across the board interestingly enough though when i just sighted this in with the new scope that's about what it got was a 2.5 inch group so all that being said when i first got this 338 wind mag i was putting them in the same hole have different rings had different scope same ammo i used a different vise but that really shouldn't matter especially not that big of a difference going from same hole to two and a half inch group uh every time we squeeze the trigger off on these it's like a three or four dollar trigger squeeze um so it's kind of a bummer when stuff like that happens but hey part of the process uh anyways here's what i'm gonna do um actually let me take a step back uh everybody's probably already commented what they think but i've already checked the torque on the rings i've checked the torque on the rails all that is solid i checked the nut right here right there solid not loose so none of this was loose the optic was not moving whatsoever um so that's kind of eliminated uh but here's what i'm gonna do because those rounds are so expensive i'm gonna do a clean slate and i'm pretty much gonna change everything so i'm gonna put different rings on it different scope i'm gonna use that exact same vice i still have it for when we test out the ammo again next time so instead of trying to eliminate things one at a time i'm just gonna go to a completely new clean slate grab different rings i've got that i had for something else grab a different scope i'll put this one on something else maybe the 6'5 grendel and we'll go from there but hey um and i'm gonna clean this barrel super super good uh get it back to like when it was brand new in that footage you saw we're putting them in the same hole but anyways that's my 338 windmag um kind of an ammo test fail video you can even see on the stock here i've got the dope for that norma ammo so when i went on those two hunting trips that's the dope that i was using um anyways um i used to be super confident in this we will again uh once we get them once we get it putting them in the same hole but um stay tuned there'll be some more 338 win mag videos soon and there's going to be some 338 lapua soon but we got to get this all
