what's up everybody it's Mike here from the art of guitar here with the guitar workout I know a lot of people have been asking about you know what do I do when I practice this is strictly a physical exercise routine it's not theory based or creative based at all so it's just to get you warmed up and get your hand strong enough so that you can play for a long time without any fatigue and also you'll build up your speed at the same time so try to keep up we're gonna have the metronome at about 95 beats per minute most of today and then we might change it a little bit but not much [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] okay you should be a little bit more warmed up now so what I would like to do is take my left hand shake it out a little bit do the finger yoga where you take your fingers and just kind of do the splits on your leg like that I like to go back and forth and then sideways as well don't do it too hard you don't wanna hurt your fingers and then you can also do this stretch here and then be sure to roll your wrists a little bit because you used a lot of wrist motion when you're doing these exercises all right let's go to the next permutation of this two three go [Music] [Music] playing three can be tricky sometimes let's go to two [Music] all right let's do singles now just because we're doing singles doesn't mean you don't stop to an alternate picking so keep that going if you can pretty go [Music] [Applause] [Music] remember you guys you can go as long as he want you can go all the way up the neck if you choose to time to do some staggered spiders that's what we're gonna go one three two four ready go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we can double that speed if you wants you can go three four [Music] [Applause] [Music] so we're gonna do the slow one to get used to the feel of it and then we're gonna double the speed that's just a quick jump but you guys can do it gradually if you want to change your metronome speeds that's totally fine all right let's do one last pattern of this idea we're gonna go one for two three it gets a little weird when you get to the tops and when you go backwards you have to go three two for one it feels kind of strange so let's go slow first ready go [Music] double the speed three go [Music] alright time to give the left hand a little bit of a break and do a lot of right-hand stuff all we're gonna do for this one is we're gonna play three strings in a row and we're gonna go down up down we're gonna cross strings like that the left hand can kind of take it easy it's gonna go or the fretting hand I'm sorry for your left-handed players the fretting hands gonna go five six seven five six seven she's gonna go up in a diagnol pattern three go [Music] let's do some hammer ons so we're gonna do is we're going to start at the fifth fret we're gonna hammer onto the sixth fret and we'll go all the way to the top backwards are gonna do pull offs we're gonna then go back and we're gonna do the first finger third finger then the first finger fourth finger three go [Music] double-speed two three go [Music] all right we have a couple more permutations of the left hand so we're gonna go middle finger to ring finger climbing up and back down that feels really weird then middle finger pinkie in this round all right we're gonna go half speed in the double speed three go [Music] [Applause] [Music] double speed three four [Music] that one misses my hand up all right the final one is just ring finger to pinky 3 to 4 ready go [Music] double speed - ready go alright now that your left hand is ready for some interesting hammer-on and pull-off techniques let's do some legato and this seems a little difficult to sometimes for people but all we're gonna do is we're gonna hammer on 5 fret ways right now 5 6 8 and then pull off 6 to 5 and hammer back onto 8 so it's gonna sound like this then we move to the next string [Music] and we keep that going in a flowing motion you'll catch the beat once that get started ready go [Music] [Applause] [Music] now backwards [Music] [Music] and we take out the gaps watch this three go [Music] you can also put it in a trip that feel [Music] it's really hard to do if you want to keep the same metronome take happen it just feels weird to do it in triplets but that's a good way to speed it up without changing the metronome speed now I suggest you do that and you climb frets as you go it's a great way to develop really strong left hand because it has to do most of the work now we go for some big stretch is okay if we're gonna go from fifth fret to seventh fret to ninth fret some people prefer first finger second finger fourth finger others prefer the ring finger for me it just depends on the situation I'm just going to go first second fourth and we're gonna do is we're going to climb up in 3 so we're gonna pick 1 2 3 1 2 3 alternate picking we get to the top we'll just go backwards then we're gonna do with hammer ons on the way up and then pull-ups on the way back down and then we're gonna go into sixes and the nines go [Music] again [Music] now with hammer-ons go [Music] and let's go into sixes picking two three go [Music] hammer ons and pull offs [Music] so nines are kind of interesting where to go up three strings doing this three pattern and then we come back one string go up three come back one string go up three and so on picking first two one two ready go [Music] backwards [Music] a mirage [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right now we're gonna do some string skipping spider exercise so we're gonna go 1 2 3 4 but every time we go to another finger we're gonna go beyond the different strings so it's going to be 6 string 5th string 6th string 5th string we're gonna stay in groups of 2 as would climb we'll do the slow speed than double the speed ready go [Music] backward [Music] all right double speed ready go [Music] now we just have to do that but actually literally skip a string this time so now we'll be on the sixth string then the fourth string sixth string fourth string with the same pattern three go [Music] you [Music] Cowen's a bit challenging let's double the speed three go [Music] now feel free to do that all the way up the neck if you want to it gets really challenging when the frets get small and you still have to keep that same pattern going so make that your own practice okay all right it's time to walk up the string this way instead of going across the strings so we're going to do the normal spider up we're gonna pause we're going to come back down we're going to do that on all six strings just to get a feel for each one three go backward [Music] [Applause] [Music] now what we do this is kind of strange now we climb up with fingers one two and four as we climb up like that backwards four two and one it's gonna feel a little bit strange three go [Music] [Applause] [Music] Arlis t 1 3 4 here we go [Music] that's another one that's fun to just climb all the way up the neck it can take a while but it's worth doing time to do the slight exercise this is kind of a fun thing and developed if we go to the seventh fret with our middle finger we slide up one fret then we played the seventh throat their first finger slide down a fret so we used the seventh fret as kind of our middle ground as we slide around that rhymed and then we get to the top we come back down three four [Music] let's go to the ring finger on the seventh fret slide up two frets first finger slide down two frets it's got that same kind of effect walking back and forth three go [Music] [Applause] [Music] final one will be the pinky up three frets down three frets very strange feeling three [Music] time for bending this could be a little bit tough on the hand let's go up to the seventh fret what I want you to do is keep your first finger back here put your middle finger next to it we're gonna bend that's eighth fret up to the ninth fret pitch so we're just gonna do a half step Bend then come down to the first finger so every single time we do a band we're gonna resort back to the first finger before moving to the next string we're gonna go all the way to the bottom string and then work our way back and it's gonna sound like this when we get to the bigger strings we're gonna pull down then work our way back and then use our ring finger for the next one then our pinky for the last one three go [Music] now the ring finger go [Music] all right now the pinky go [Music] so now we have to do the harder part which is gonna be a whole step Bend so we do exactly what we just did everything is just gonna sound like this now instead of okay we've got a whole step now ready go [Music] ring-finger go [Music] pinky [Music] I don't do that one too much because it really is tough on the left hand going back to my finger yoga stretches and all that good stuff remember this is a workout so take your take care of your body all right let's do some sweep climbs this is a lot of fun we're gonna take a shape we're gonna actually use a little Theory now and this is from the first form of the Caged system and that's where it's basically outlining a C major shape and we're gonna play one note at a time we're gonna climb like this [Music] and then go back remember because we're practicing the sweep idea you take your pick and you just let it go from one string to the next one direction then there's a little bit of a alternate pick and then on the way back we just do up strokes all the way so wrists lower to look like this then we move up a half step when we go as high as we want let's start here at the fourth fret though three slow [Music] let's double that speeds ready go [Music] another important aspect is that as you push the pick across my palm is actually touching the previous string so that it kills that otherwise you get too much ringing out you can go faster like I said set your metronome higher at a higher speed and then you'll be a flying alright the final exercise are just tap climbs so we're gonna actually go fifth fret eighth fret with the left hand first finger pinky and we're gonna tap the twelfth fret and on the way up so we're gonna be ascending we're gonna go 12 pull off to the five hammer the eighth we're gonna do that all the way across but on the way down we're gonna go 12 eight five so we're gonna kind of change it up a little bit on the way back it just feels right to do that descending alright so let's start at the 12th fret after we finish one round of up and down we're gonna go up the fret and do the same thing ready go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you're tapping finger might hurt a little bit in the next few days sometimes I feel like rug burned I can kind of already feel it I'm not used to tapping that much I mean I used to all the time but not as much anymore so that was a good workout for me
