freedom losing all hope was Freedom hey what's up everyone it's Brian here from the Y and today we're going to be taking a look at Fight Club so while the haters will say that fight Club is just another film that promotes toxic masculinity to angsty teenagers I believe it's so much more than that of course a huge part of the film does Center on waking up from modern consumerist society to reclaim your masculinity and Forge your own path but the flip side is that it's also a cautionary tale against extremist Behavior as Thanos would say perfectly balanced this whole thing should be or you can say screw all that fight club's a romantic comedy because there's actually an argument for that too if I did have a tumor I'd name it Marla on that note let's get right into the video here's 30 facts you didn't know about Fight Club so how many of you saw the twist coming because I'll be honest I had no idea but looking back on it now the movie actually gave us plenty of hints along the way everyone probably remembers that they had the same briefcase on the airplane but it's lesser known that both also wore the same white boxers in addition when Tyler calls the narrator back on the Payphone a sign indicates that it's impossible to receive incoming calls it's also shown that Tyler lives on paper Street and by definition a paper street is a road that appears on maps but was never built and last one for now when Tyler walks past the mirror in the hallway he has no reflection foreign both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of Fight Club feature their own unique Easter eggs upon inserting the Blu-ray into a player there's no thumbnail or even any indication that it is what it says holding true to rule number one and after loading it up you're greeted to the menu of the 1999 film Never Been Kissed starring Drew Barrymore which eventually glitches into the fight club title screen for the DVD version of Fight Club you can pause it as I'm not going to read the whole thing but it contains a special warning from Tyler [Music] unsurprisingly Fight Club had his fair share of controversies the first big dispute took place in the sequence with Marla and bed with Tyler where she was originally supposed to say I want to have your abortion Laura zizkin the president of production emphatically objected to the obscene line and demanded that director David Fincher immediately changed it he agreed on the condition that the new line was there to stay no matter what and a deal was made my God I haven't been like that since grade school after hearing this this game was even more pissed and asked that the old line be put back in but per their deal he told her no can do and you know how the British use phrases like primary and secondary school to refer to different stages of Education well Carter who is British initially assumed that she was referring to something like high school when she said grade school and was obviously pretty shocked when she learned what it really meant only two minutes later zizkin was once again unamused when she watched Tyler open the door wearing a rubber glove she petitioned for it to be removed and may have gotten her way though when the part got the biggest laugh out of the whole movie at a test screening she was persuaded to change her mind the final issue centered on this very line carbine gas-powered semi-automatic weapon pumping round after round in the colleagues and co-workers in early screenings the threat is shooting up the workplace scored positively with test audiences then came Columbine and as you can imagine test audiences had the exact opposite reaction Fincher mold over is scrapping the part entirely but since they were already done with filming and it led directly into the phone call with Marla he had to leave it in compliance and liability my tit's gonna run off after the narrator loses a fight both men agree to a rematch about next week next week and at the end of the film The Man is credited as next month's opponent as is the case with most films that develop a cult following Fight Club was a box office disappointment they didn't exactly lose money grossing 100 million off a 65 million dollar budget yet after everyone got their share of the profits there wasn't much left over the real money came later as almost purely based on Word of Mouth the film grew to be a massive success leading to it selling over 13 million DVDs usually the Caster instructed not to drink while filming no matter if the character is drunk in the scene or not although there's no rule against drinking while on extended shooting breaks so allegedly one night Brad Pitt and Edward Norton decided to get a bit tipsy and hit some golf balls straight into the side of a catering truck just offset who the hell knows why they did it though David Fincher were sure glad they decided to as he turned his camera captured the very FICO best moment between the two and the rest is history to prepare for the rules in Fight Club Brad Pitt and Edward Norton took up a slew in new activities which included boxing Taekwondo and grappling and the pair even learned how to make actual soap on Pitt's end he took things a step further by having the dentist chip his tooth to achieve more rugged look a question of Medicaid as I pass do I give you the ass I want to Crunch [Music] when Tyler makes this remark all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars you can see that he's looking directly at Jared Leto the lead singer of 30 Seconds to Mars what makes this even better is that the band had only recently formed the year prior and he was still relatively new to acting I mean what are the odds that he'd be staring at one of the only people to become an actor and a rock star at the highest level and you you're too fun Chuck palahnik the author of the book which the movie is based on detailed how he weirdly enough got the idea for the novel from a camping trip he went on on his vacation Paul Nick found himself in a scenario we can probably all understand just trying to get some sleep when the people next to you want to party all night long one night he confronted them and as he explained they literally beat the crap out of me but that wasn't the worst of it Paul Nick said when he went back to work on Monday all bruised up people didn't ask me what had happened I think they were afraid of the answer I realized that if you look bad enough people would not want to know what you did in your spare time they don't want to know the bad things about you and that he said was the inspiration behind Fight Club I showed this already my man here he liked it didn't you for the absurdly loud sex scenes Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter spent three days just recording orgasmic sounds for this reason among a multitude of others he requested that his parents not watch the film they went ahead and saw it anyways but only made it to the chemical burn sequence before they tapped out which means they at least made it far enough to hear the sex noises that he worked so hard on at the diner the narrator says the following to Marla please please 15 seconds don't open your mouth or move 15 seconds later a bell signals that his time is up due to the controversial nature of Fight Club the movie attracted is fair share of critics some calling it a film without a single redeeming quality While others found it irresponsible and appalling one of the film's biggest detractors was none other than Rosie O'Donnell who went on her show the Friday it came out and told her entire audience not to watch it which by itself isn't terrible but it didn't stop there as she went on to spoil the ending just because she was so bothered by the film I gotta say whatever your feelings are on Trump maybe he was on to something with Rosie we're all a little chubby but Rosie's just worse than most of us but it's not the chubbiness before filming this legendary scene I want you to do me a favor yeah sure I want you to hit me as hard as you can David Fincher pulled Edward Norton aside and told him he really needed to connect with Pip and to do that he said he needed to hit him for real in response Edwards explained I didn't know what to do and I hit him in the air mother I think at this point most people are aware of the four frames containing Tyler Durden that briefly flashed on the screen in the early parts of the film what you may not know is that Fincher also wanted to do the same thing right in the middle of the 20th Century Fox logo however he couldn't get the idea past the legal department he acquiesced only to come back with a second request this time to put a frame during the Regency Enterprises logo which the president himself declined and last but not least Tyler makes one more appearance before the narrator officially meets him he's a waiter on the TV in the hotel room so I hate to break it to you but you can't actually make a bomb with Tyler durden's recipe in the film did you know if you mixed equal parts of gasoline and Frozen I say in the film because this isn't exactly true for the novel which gives a pretty detailed explanation for how to make an explosive originally the filmmakers were gonna follow along with the book and give an actual recipe but in the interest of Public Safety decided against it so instead today I'm going to teach Allah you how to make the fight club bomb just kidding or am I maybe don't demonetize me YouTube just kidding though really the only other actor to be considered for Tyler Durden was Russell Crowe Crowe wanted the job and the studio didn't hate him in the park but in the end they just felt the movie really needed a major star you gotta remember this is pre-gladiator Russell Crowe so he wasn't a huge name also if Crow were tap taking on the role of Tyler Durden he probably would have never done Gladiator since both films were shot at basically the same time so everything worked out in the end for the narrator Matt Damon and Sean Penn were initially in talks before they settled on Norton and the salaries definitely reflected that Brad Pitt was the a side as they paid him 17.5 million while Norton received 2.5 things you own end up owning you similar to how films reuse different sets in costumes recycling digital assets is another way that Studios can save both time and money a great example of this can be seen in Fight Club as during the cave sequence where the narrator's breath is clearly visible this was actually a rehashed CG asset from Titanic by many accounts Fight Club seems to fall into the very rare category of films that turned out better than the source material this isn't to diss on the book though as author Chuck palahnik basically agreed with the statement and had this to say I was sort of embarrassed of the book because the movie had streamlined the plot and made it so much more effective and made connections that I had never thought to make one connection he says he failed to make occurs in the scene and he like did this every six years he goes to a new city and starts a new family in the book this line is sort of just mentioned and never brought up again while in the film it's used to set up that the fight club itself was being franchised Tyler had been busy setting up franchises all over the country as David Fincher stated there are Starbucks cups everywhere in every shot now I'm not quite sure if they made their way into literally every sequence but no doubt they're all over the damn movie one place Starbucks didn't want to be though was in the scene where they destroyed the coffee shop as a result producers had to change the name from Starbucks to gratifico coffee and after reading that a kid was inspired to blow up a Starbucks because of Fight Club you can see their reasoning and not wanting a store with their name on it to be destroyed on screen when deep space exploration ramps up it'll be the corporations that name everything Starbucks for homework Tyler sends the members out to get into fights with complete strangers one of them decides to antagonize a priest and sprays him down with the hose apparently the cameraman found this scene to be so funny he couldn't stop himself from laughing which is why if he pays super close attention the camera shakes ever so slightly and if he weren't already aware the priest later joins The Fight Club [Applause] in the wake of the movie many real fight clubs sprung up all around the country there was a gentleman's Fight Club involving people who worked in the tech industry a Princeton University Fight Club that took place on campus an unknown number of backyard teenage fight clubs in various high schools and two daycare workers even started a toddler Fight Club after they ran out of things to do during an argument between the narrator and Marla the movie theater behind them is playing Seven Years in Tibet a film that Brad Pitt starting two years earlier well to be totally accurate it reads seven year in time though I think you get the point rule number six no shirts no shoes but where there's rules there is exceptions with the one exception in this case being Bob or meatloaf and while the in-universe explanation for this lines up nicely Bob Bob had tits the real reason he couldn't take it off was because his fat suit which was filled with birdseed and weighed over a hundred pounds how to be kept hidden and on the topic of shirts in Mr and Mrs Smith the hostage that Brad Pitt interrogates is wearing a Fight Club t-shirt in the film we learned that the narrator works as an automobile recall specialist a decidedly Grim job that puts a numerical value on human life and determines whether it's cost effective to do a major recall the scary thing about this is that the job exists in real life and it's likely something that automakers have been doing for decades the most well-known example concerns GM and a document called The Ed Ivy memo in it a cost to benefit analysis was done and it was found that they could save over six dollars per vehicle if they didn't do a recall and instead just settle the wrongful death lawsuits the death toll ran all the way up to 124 victims before they were forced to do a recall and pay a massive fine which makes you hope that the industry learned their lesson yet I'm not sold if x is less than the cost of a recall we don't do one [Music] there were even more clues that foreshadowed the twist take for instance how only Tyler pays for the bus ticket and then when a guy pushes past the both of them he only says excuse me to the narrator or how he switches between pronouns when discussing his father's advice [Music] 30 year old then you have the fact that the man who brings the car looks at the narrator and calls him Mr Durden Airport parking long term after you Mr dirty and as you can see here Tyler is clearly the one shown to be driving though when they get into the accident he crawls out of the passenger side I'm sure there's a ton more that I'm missing but here's the final one when Tyler gets punched in the stomach the narrator shares in his pain one of the biggest themes in Fight Club centers out consumerism and his detrimental effects on the American public a piece of symbolism that speaks to this message occurs when the pair is smashing up cars no I thought you did [Applause] when looking at the VW Beetle Tyler makes a sound that I can only describe as disgust and there's a specific reason behind this as explained in the DVD extras the beetle has always been a symbol of 60s counterculture and Freedom the thing is by the time Fight Club came out in the 90s the youth had become the corporate bosses and they were now trying to repackage their culture onto another generation everyone working on the film agreed it was exactly what the film was railing against hence why they decided to include it something else he might have missed is that the reporter covering all the Mayhem is Lauren Sanchez and now she's with Jeff Bezos the face of consumerism I swear there's a conspiracy in there somewhere from the Parker Morris building the original title sequence was much simpler than what made it to the final version as it was only supposed to be the sound of a gun cocking with the same lead-in we see today the title sequence we ended up with is in contrast a journey through the different regions of the brain notably it starts out in the amygdala the structure responsible for fear and obviously ends with the camera coming out of his forehead and while the sound effect of a gun caulking is basically free the extensive CGI used to map the brain set them back almost eight hundred thousand dollars foreign ER things really didn't go all too smoothly the studio was all set on Janine Garofalo when Edward Norton made an unusual request to drop her from consideration which they did next up for the role was actually Norton's girlfriend at the time Courtney Love and interestingly enough it was now Brad Pitt's turn to veto the actress finally hell in the bottom Carter was chosen based on her performance in the wings of the dove and both actors agreed she was perfect for the role one example that proves just how well she understood the character surrounds her makeup as Carter insisted that the makeup artist apply it with their left hand because she understood that Marla was not the type of girl who'd be skilled at putting on makeup or even care enough about doing a good job in the narrator's first meeting with Marla he says this people think you're dying man they really really listen to you instead of just instead of just waiting for their turn to speak then at the end of Fight Club he proves that it's really true I want you to really listen to me okay while Fight Club is overall a faithful adaptation of the novel one of the biggest discrepancies takes place in How It Ends if you think about it the movie ended very optimistic the narrator is finally able to get rid of Tyler and things with Marla seem on the up and up the book follows along right up to the point where the narrator shoots himself upon doing so he wakes up in a mental hospital and has a conversation with god about the events that just transpired the book ends with members of Project Mayhem disguises Hospital workers approaching him and saying we look forward to getting you back and funny enough the Chinese version of Fight Club was in fact closer to the original ending laid out in the book in their censored version he shoots himself and a blurb comes up on the screen that reads through the clue provided by Tyler the police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals successfully preventing the bomb from exploding after the trial Tyler was sent to the lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment he was discharged from the hospital in 2012. thank you all for watching I hope you enjoyed it I sort of been on this kick of 90s early 2000s movies lately doing uh you know American Psycho Schindler's List so probably the next video will be something a little more recent alright till next time have a great day everyone
