[Music] this month my challenge was to learn how to sing and now singing something that I've loved my whole life as a kid I used to like to sing I used to have a band actually in the band I wasn't the singer I wasn't even the backup singer I was struggling to make the backup backup singer even though I like to write the songs and I love to sing the songs just in my own time when I would sing them to other people they just didn't seem to enjoy them I have this love for music and this passion for singing and it's really something that I would really enjoy to be able to improve but it's one of those things where it's always been a little bit unclear to me how much singing is correlated to you know what you're given genetically and what you can actually work to achieve and so this month it actually started off with me visiting one of the best vocal coaches in the world his name's Roger love he's based out of LA and his work with the biggest stars that you can think of when the biggest stars in the world need to find their true voice they turn to one expert and no other voice coach in history has been more commercially successful than Roger love awake with John May eyes like this Selena Gomez is like with Gwen Stefani he's worked with INXS evicted poison just so many huge names and I got a chance to sit down with him and ask him a lot of the questions that I had when it comes to seeing can someone like me actually improve my singing I've never found anyone that I couldn't change their voice to make it infinitely greater I have found people that don't work hard and they try it for a minute and then they give up we were all born with the potential to be able to sing and very few people learn great technique so my price is to actually learn this month was to go through raj Allods online training course he's got this full course to take you from beginner to learning all the techniques that he teaches to these major stars ministers with a little singing to the camera so we can hear like the before and after so I'm gonna do like 30 seconds for a minute a cappella I'm gonna sing this song Riptide by advanced road hopefully this isn't too painful for you guys later runnin down to taken away to the dark side I wanna be your left hand man and I love you when you're singing that song and I got a lump in my throat cause you're gonna sing the words wrong okay cool so that is my before the funny thing is like in my head it kind of sounds like a singing in que I have no idea what it sounds on camera hopefully we can see some massive improvements I would love to be able to sing well let's look at what my it's day 1 homework is a lot of it was actually doing vocal exercises there's a lot of singing different notes so you're training your ear to sing in pitch it's also training your body to get different sounds out cleanly and correctly okay so I just finished my first lesson from Roger lo he's super entertaining and charismatic so he's great to learn from so one of the things that he really stress is going to be really important is going from your chest wise to your mid voice to your head voice you already have a deep voice and my job is to fix all of the highlights code so that you can have limitless choices love songs that you're gonna say like oh I love it when somebody comes in they say I have a low voice and then I show them they can sing in their life and I say you're a tenor and they they were like who knew everyone kind of has a range in each of these voices so my chest voice I can go really low or and maybe my highest note in my chest is oh so I've got my like little range if I want to sing a higher note I'm not going to have to use my mid voice and my head voice my head voice I might be able to go oh you can kind of feel where you're singing based on where your body is actually vibrating and resonating so when I sing that oh I can feel kind of this kind of resonation in my head and when I go oh I can feel that more in my my mid oh I can feel that in my chest once you start to understand where you're singing from then you can hear a song and go oh that no it's slightly out of my chest voice I'm gonna need to bring in my mid there and you can kind of confidently mix into just two to mid or mid to head and try to make it sound still like a full note and try to make it a little bit more seamless and so the more you practice by going from chest amid to head and you can find that in a song and smoothly transition from one to the other throughout the month I also tested my singing and I was singing to test was I actually improving you know when I'm listening back does it sound better does a sand cleaner how often do you record yourself singing I mean I have previously but maybe like once in the past five years you know once in the past five years so a professional singer usually records themselves all day for hours at a time and it takes them years to get even used to listening to that practice and then listen and then practice man listen not only to my examples but to themselves doing the exercises recording themselves listening back oh I was off on this but I was sort of more on on this so really becoming aware of the way you sound most people have no idea of the way they sound I am going to be trying to sing a song right now been doing the warm-up exercises and I'm really gonna focus on some of the things that I find I'm gonna sing feeling good by Michael Buble probably a pretty ambitious [Music] you know how I feel in the sky you know how the new dawn it's a new day it's a new life for me and I'm feeling fish in the sea you know how running free you know how [Music] I got some work to do I think at some moments where I didn't sound terribly strained and massively out okay and then I also have some - in Wales like oh boy this is bad this is really bad hopefully I can come a long way from you another really important thing that I worked on this month was diaphragmatic breathing so that means you breathe in through your nose nice deep breath in through your nose and you really let your stomach get really big and then you slowly let the air release out of your mouth while you're singing make sure you're not raising your chest and shoulders my chest and shoulders are remaining stationary the sound that you create from singing is actually air being released and if you have the air in your stomach then you're not creating these closures throughout your chest and you can get a nice clean consistent sound and it won't sound congested and close and it'll sound more open and loud and so that's something that's really important another thing was the larynx this thing over here on my throat and when it raises up it actually can just the air flowing from your mouth and can give you a more congested sound and so I really have to focus on having a low larynx throughout the month and there's some exercises that I did you can sing kind of like a Yogi Bear voice you can sweep will hug moose and that actually takes your legs and it pulls it down and once you're getting comfortable by driving it down then you can actually start singing more confidently with your throat open and the sound coming out a lot more cleanly [Music] Wow does not kind of seem like that I'm improving that much if anything it feels like I'm getting worse because I'm trying to think about all these techniques and there does like getting in my head and I'm like alright lowlights ready diaphragmatic ly brave trying to switch to middle voice to head voice to chest voice and so if anything is like tripping me up and making me just like lose control it took me a real long time before I started to actually make this sound better I was getting too caught up by thinking about all of these different techniques that is kind of starting to become stressful and I was in my head and I wasn't just relaxed and when you're not relaxed you can kind of hear that in your voice the more I was learning the more I was actually stumbling over trying to think about where do I need to sing from and half did that sound and so originally it was like slowing me down but as I started to get a little bit more comfortable with it and particularly just getting cleaner sounds for my chest voice which is where I'm most comfortable then I started and feel a little bit more comfortable and I started to hear progress in all of this singing throughout the month I thought it'd be a little bit fun despite being very awkward to sing in front of a little group of friends at the end of the month being a little bit awkward singing in this room then everyone just staring at me if I'm singing I had some very supportive friends come and listen to me and I do really feel when I listen back that there was a considerable improvement just my confidence in the singing my ability to hit the pitch a little bit cleaner as opposed to like going too low and finding pitch that was a mistake that I was making this train noise that I often do trying to push out really big loud sounds and knowing how to like they'll back my control to make it more open there's all these little things that I think I can hear in that final performance I'm definitely not an amazing singer now by any means but I definitely have started my journey to singing a little bit cleaner and a little bit more palatable for other people's ears which is exciting for me because I do love to sing and now hopefully after this entire journey other people might enjoy my singing a little bit more [Music]
