so I finally got my hands on the Amber Nick rg35 xxsp and I wanted to give my first impressions after having it for a short amount of time this won't be a full review but I just wanted to make a quick video talking about a few things that kind of surprised me about the am bernick rg35 xxsp after months of seeing all the leaks all the hype seeing all the newest iterations of all these flip handhelds because originally we were thinking Miu was going to come out with their Miu Mini flip first but I don't even know what's going on with that right now but we have ambern rg35 xxs right here it's in my hand so I wanted to talk about it a little bit so first getting out of the box actually holding it is a completely different experience than seeing it I've talked about this so many times but there really is something magical about having a clamshell handheld especially playing things that you wouldn't expect to be able to play on it for example playing some Dreamcast or even PSP on it or PlayStation or something like that I Love Game Boy Advance on this handheld but there's just something cool about playing consoles on a clamshell handheld it just feels wrong but it's a really good feeling so one of the first things that everyone is going to notice with this handheld is the controls other reviewers have talked about this but I think it is important to mention because it is a change for amberi to have these kind of clicky buttons I'll let you listen to the buttons in the d-pad real quick and then I'll talk about it so as you can see there compared to other handhelds like the rg35 XX plus which has the exact same specs as the rg35 XX SP some many rg35 XS is now they have the exact same internal specs but you do have a change here with the controls obviously they're quite a bit louder they're clicky buttons which is the first that I can think of at least the first that I've ever owned from am bernick having these clicky buttons as well as a clicky d-pad so this either could be a big positive or a bad thing for you depending on your preferences with the buttons I really like the feel of them they're certainly a bit loud I was considering using this while traveling in the future maybe because it's a foldable handheld you're not going to have to worry about getting the screen off scratched up if you just toss it in a bag or whatever else but yeah it could be annoying if you're around other passengers or something and it's super loud so that was a consideration for me but generally speaking I don't hate the buttons but the d-pad is where it does get a little bit more consequential in my mind you do have this more precise feeling with a clicky d-pad so if you're switching from left to bottom left diagonal to down you'll be able to feel each individual click which is okay but I personally don't love it that much it's not the end of the world by any means but to me it's just not my favorite and it is a departure from what we had in the previous rg35 XX handhelds at least in the rg35 XX plus and the rg35 xxh there is a little bit of a difference through those 2 d-pads from what I can tell not anything super super consequential but we do have a difference here so don't think every single rg35 XX handheld in the series has the exact same buttons and the same dpad it's just a different form factor that's how some people would like to spin it but of course there is a now significant departure from that with the rg35 xxsp it seems like the general feeling from what I've seen people say is that they don't mind the d-pad and the buttons too much I personally would prefer if they had the same controls as they had on the rg35 XX plus here but it's not the end of the world and maybe it was done this way to be more like the the original Game Boy Advance SP so on one of Russ's from retro gamecore two videos he did on this handheld so far he mentioned that if you hadn't held an original Game Boy Advance SP in years you probably wouldn't notice that the rg35 XX SP is significantly bigger than the Game Boy advaned SP not significantly like two times bigger but there's a noticeable difference and it is larger there have been people who have held them side by side and you can tell that the rg35 XX SP is bigger and upon seeing that comparison I actually am glad that it's a little bit bigger I know some people might want for the Nostalgia factor a one toone copy the exact same size but I actually like the fact that it's bigger just to make it more comfortable when playing and it's probably about the same if you were playing a Game Boy advaned SP when you were a kid or a teenager or something and your hands weren't as big as they are today as an adult I think that it's pretty much going to have the same feel it just grew a little bit and so did your hands so it's about the same so for me I'm glad it's this size I wouldn't want it to be smaller I know some people might disagree with that but just so you can get in longer gaming sessions with this without hand cramps or anything like that I think it was a good decision to blow it up a little bit make it a bit larger so when it comes to the overall build quality I'm super impressed with the rg35 XX SP it's better than anything we've seen so far and I know it's not super hard to say that because really besides this all we've had was retroid clamshell handheld which didn't really do so well towards the end with some of the issues with the hinge and then there's the pal Kitty v90 which really was the only thing that actually tried to fit in this exact space trying to aim to be kind of a Game Boy advanced SP clone but that was a handheld that cost still about $30 $35 I believe and it doesn't have the most premium feeling build quality which is kind of normal for pal Kitty but amberi I think did a really really good job here I have the silver color I really like the shiny metallic look Everything feels really solid the shoulders trigger buttons I really like the way they feel and the clicky buttons and d-pad feel good quality again the d-pad isn't my favorite but I'm not going to say it feels bad quality it doesn't it feels good quality and the clicky d pad can be useful in certain circumstances and I was afraid the hinge was going to feel cheap it was going to feel like it was going to break any day now but I haven't gotten that impression at all again that might change with time who knows but I feel like it's really solid and I have a feeling it will hold up maybe I'll eat my words in a few months but we'll find out and something that multiple other viewers have mentioned that you can't actually see the CPU right under the battery and some people have talked about heat issues with this I feel like there is slightly more heat here on the rg35 xxsp than you would get on a handheld like I said like the rg35 XX plus when playing the exact same game same setting same amount of time same brightness everything like this I'm not too worried about it to be honest it's not getting that hot it's just a little bit of warmth that you can definitely feel but nothing too bad I feel like you're only going to notice that when you're trying to play Dreamcast or N64 or playing PS1 games especially if you're using a 2X resolution or something like that if you're just playing Game Boy advanced games or something like that I don't think you're going to feel any warmth at all and again I'm not saying you shouldn't play Dreamcast games on here or PS1 games 2x resolution or N64 whatever else I mentioned I don't think that's a concern at all or something you should shy away from I'm just saying I feel like there's a bit more warmth there maybe it's a placebo effect because I'm aware of what other reviewers have said I know about the proximity of the CPU to the battery I don't think it's anything that significant but I think it is worth noting at least so overall in my very short amount of time I've had the rg35 XX SP I've been really really happy with it the fact that it's a clamshell handheld I feel like is a lot more motivating for me to bring it out and about I don't have to about the screen getting scratched I don't have to Lug around some protective case or anything else like that you can just toss it in a bag toss it in your pocket whatever you want to do and not really worry too much about it I imagine I'm going to be getting some scratches on the case and everything as much as I don't want to see that happen I can Envision it happening in the future and probably showing up quite a bit on this silver case so in the near future I want to talk a lot more about the rg35 xxsp there have already been two custom firmwares that have been updated to support closing the handheld and it going into sleep mode which is already a thing on the stock firmware but there are custom frore options that are going to support that now which is great and it's a really cool feature to have on a retro handheld so there's a lot to talk about there there's some other comparisons to be made between this and other handhelds there's a lot here so I really love the rg35 xxsp and I feel like it's going to be my number one used handheld in 20124 unless Mew comes out with a Mew Mini flip and I really like the analog Stakes we'll see what ends up happening with that so if you're interested in buying the
