So how do you check to see if the skin tones that you're filming are correct? That they are white balanced and everything? Well, the human eye and technology today does a pretty good job at auto balancing everything but if you really want to be scientifically correct follow these steps in this video Hey everyone. Kelsey here and welcome back to Gal today we are talking about perfecting your skin tones using a variety of different in-camera and post-production effects and I'm going to be showing you how you can check to even know if your skin tones are correct a lot of times some people might look a little bit too orange or a little green a little purple and how do you even go about correcting that. Well i'm gonna be showing you some in-camera tips that you can do such as custom white balancing choosing picture profiles and then i'm going to show you how you can do some fix it in post scenarios so i'll be showing you how to use the skin tone line in lumetri scopes and i'll be providing the footage that i shot so when you go into post-production you want to follow along you can use the sample footage to see if you're doing it correctly as always i include the time codes below so if you guys want to be able to jump around to the different time-coded chapters to review different parts of this video just use those time codes they're right down below you can click right now as you're watching this video and i want to thank envato elements for sponsoring this video so envato elements is seriously one of the best resources out there i've been using it for the past two years it has stock video it has after effects templates logo reveals lower thirds music sound effects anything that you need and i'll tell you more about it later on but you can use my link below to get 70 off to get unlimited downloads of any of these assets that you can seriously use forever and i repeat you can use them forever there's no licensing hiccups so thank you elements for reaching out and sponsoring this video and now let's go ahead and let's do the tips oh wait i almost forgot you guys need to stay tuned till the end because i'm doing a camera giveaway of the Akaso action camera so watch until the end to learn how you can win one of these action cameras and without further ado let's go ahead and jump into the tips now a few years ago when i was first starting out on youtube i was just using the auto white balance hoping that everything would look right and you can really see that my skin tones were way off by using the auto white balance the auto white balance cannot achieve the same perfection as a custom white balance so the first step to achieving better skin tones is by setting a custom white balance and you want to do this in camera because it'll have the best results compared to actually fixing it in post-production inside of premiere pro so i'm using a canon and all cameras have different ways of setting the custom white balance but with the canon eos r you're just going to take a photo of your subject holding up a white card or just a white piece of paper and after you take that photo you're going to go into the menu settings and choose the white balance settings and then just click on custom white balance and then choose the last photo that you took and what this will do it'll calibrate the color temperature to the white card in the colors of that photo that you took and this will achieve the best results i will do some shots showing you what the video will look like if i used auto white balance compared to the custom white balance or let's say you're accidentally white balancing using the cloudy mode and then you need to fix it in post-production and i'll show you how to do that in the third step of this video but for now let's talk about picture profile so this next step on picture profiles is completely optional but it's good to keep in mind when you're filming when you want to achieve the best skin tones you want to make sure that you're not in some special effects picture profile such as one of the tinted ones because that will mess with the color temperature but let's say you've never even turned on a picture profile before another thing you can think about doing is choosing the log format which gives you more dynamic range to color grade with and i love shooting in the canon log because i'm able to adjust the highlights and the darker tones in my image much better now it is a little bit more work and you don't have to turn on log but once you go log i like to say that it's hard to go back to shooting just standard because you just have a lot more flexibility and it'll look kind of more milky at first and that's okay because you actually need to color grade and i made a whole tutorial on how to color grade log so it looks a lot better and inside of the menu settings when you're turning on the log you can actually turn on the view assist and that way when you're looking at the screen on the canon it'll show you what the final image will look like after you color grade and so that is picture profiles definitely explore log the next step is post-production all right so here in my timeline i have four different clips that were shot in four different types of white balances so here is the correct custom white balance that we shot in the canon log here is the auto white balance shot here's the white fluorescent white balance which is really off as you can see and here is the cloudy white balance as you can see it looks a little bit better but it's still off so what i'm going to do first is show you how to adjust the exposure of the log footage here so that way it's in the correct exposure level the first thing you need to do is adjust the brightness and contrast of the shot and i like to use lumetri colors curves so this is where i go over and use the scopes and right now it's in the vector scope which we will get to with the skin tone line but let's pull up the luma waveform which displays the brightness now in order to get this shot correctly exposed we need to bring up this waveform as close to 100 and as low to zero for more contrast so to control the top of the waveform we're going to go over to this white line over here and just bring this up closer to around 100 and already it's looking good if you bring it too far over to the left it's going to get clipped and overexposed so right around here is fine and then same with the bottom of this curve we're going to bring this over to the bottom closer to zero and already if we turn this on and off you can see a huge difference so we can go ahead and say good to go with the exposure let's go ahead and let's turn off the luma waveform and now what we can do is see over here this is the display of all the colors in this vector scope this is the vectorscope yuv now this outer line here this just means that this is the broadcast standard and because we're not using this for television we don't have to worry about the saturation levels and it looks like it's right on the edge so it's fine for this magenta to be out there but in terms of the skin tone we want to isolate just a patch of my skin so we can see if the skin tones are correct so to isolate just the skin we're going to go to effects and let's click on the ellipsis mask underneath opacity and then we're just going to isolate just a patch of skin here and let's zoom in to around 400 percent and this is just checking to make sure that this custom white balance was doing a good job with our skin tones so now when we go to lumetri color you can see it just isolated the color just to the skin tone line you can see if i move this it starts to include more color in the background but as we isolate just the skin it'll show us just the skin tones so you can see here it actually did a really good job we want the color to be exactly on the skin tone line or the skin tone indicator now if we really wanted to go in and make some adjustments and bring some of the red to be tighter in this line this is where we can use the hue saturation curves so if we go to hue versus hue which allows you to change the color of an existing color so here we can then select just the reds since we want to bring the reds in tighter so we can actually create our own dots here right when the red color begins create a dot and right when the red ends let's say around here click and then let's make a center dot between and now we can adjust this color to be anywhere in the spectrum so if we bring this down see how it brings in those red colors tighter to the line for if we bring it too much though you can see it gets way too yellow if we bring it up it'll start to get over to magenta but now you can really see how by controlling this line it allows you to control this angle so if i bring this down just a little bit closer you can see we can bring it closer to the line and it's almost perfect but if we move this mask you can start to see the lips change a little bit so we want to be careful not to change my lip color too much so let's go ahead and just bring this up a little bit so we still have some of the pink in my lips displayed so already this is a great skin tone it's really difficult to see the before and after here because the human eye can only see so much but using these tools you can really make a great skin tone line and canon already has great color so you can see here the skin tone is great so let's go ahead and let's go back to the effect controls and let's turn off this mask and we can see this almost fully graded perfect shot here of the skin tone looking great if we turn off lumetri color this is the before with the log before graded and this is the after if you want to see really bad skin tones we can go to the white fluorescent here which was really poorly white balanced it wasn't white balanced at all so when we go in to create a mask here and let's go to lumetri scopes and we just isolate the skin you will see that it's more in the magenta color it's not on the skin tone line indicator so that is way off and that is difficult to fix so this is showing poor skin tones because we didn't white balance now we can also check out the auto white balance here so this auto white balance skin tone is actually still pretty good so what we can do is go to effect controls and we can isolate the skin tone again let's just go to a little patch here of skin and let's go to metric scopes and you can see it's did a pretty good job we can go to 400 percent and we can make some adjustments here and already it's pretty good you can see the skin tone is is okay so we don't need to do too much there but let me turn off the mask and you can see side-by-side comparison if we turn on comparison view between this canon log shot on the left which was custom white balanced and the standard shot with auto white balance now you can see here there's a little bit more detail in my face you can see that the the white balance is pretty good on the canon the auto white balance on the right and on the left is the custom white balance but the reason why i like the left more is because i have more detail in my face because i shot in the log i was able to control the exposure but on the right you can see that the exposure is good but there's a little bit less detail in the highlights so this is why i love shooting in the log another thing that i can just quickly show you if i turn off comparison view and go to lumetri scopes and go back to the luma waveform here you can see that the brightness level is good in this auto wipe balance shot like there's nothing that's overexposed here so nothing is really wrong at all but if i go over here into the log shot you can see the waveform looks a little a little bit different because we have more detail and we're able to control the brightness using this brightness curve so this is a lot to throw in here in the premiere pro section but i just really wanted to show how much better it is to shoot log and how much better it is for the skin tones to shoot custom white balance so definitely continue using those tips and if you have any questions be sure to leave a comment below and that brings me to this week's comment of the week rick gates wrote hey kelsey great stuff you really know where the crucial parameters are for each of these templates do they usually come with some sort of guide that indicates where the customizations need to be made so thank you rick for this question this was left on my logo reveal template editing video where i showed you how to edit templates from envato elements so these logo templates they all have what is usually called a master style layer so you select that style layer and then you go up to effect controls and this will allow you to change sort of thematic overall master style such as the colors of the different elements in the template and it makes it really easy to kind of customize that template so definitely check out that video if you have any questions about editing the templates and again envato elements really has some great templates to work with i love their lower third templates their after effects logo reveals in one of my most recent tutorials i did on the map animations i actually downloaded a logo reveal template of this world because normally i have my set logo reveal at the beginning of all my videos but for this one i wanted to have something more cooler that was related to the theme so i just went on and bought elements and i searched for cool i don't know map logo reveal and i got this really cool logo reveal that i was able to just customize to my brand so definitely definitely check it out i repeat you can use any of the templates any of the assets any of the fonts stock video music as many times as you want there's no license issues you download it once and you have it forever so use my link below to get 70 off i thought that my dog was about to knock the light over so use my link below to get seventy percent off oh she just hit the camera too uh so use my link below to get seventy percent off in vata elements and i hope you guys take advantage of it and lastly certainly not least Acaso sent me this camera the v50 elite action camera i took it with me out on my vacations to the baltic sea this summer and i was able to get some really cool underwater shots you can actually go 131 feet underwater with this thing so this can shoot 4k up to 60 frames per second and 1080p up to 120 frames per second so you can really do some cool speed ramping with the footage and the footage is pretty easy it has a nice touch screen on the back so you can easily change your modes no problem and it has the internal stabilization which is pretty standard for all of the action cameras now so if you want steady shots where you're where you're vlogging where you have it rigged up to like a stick and you're walking around you can ensure that it it's pretty steady so if you want this camera just leave a comment below i will choose my favorite comment and I will reach out to you and Akaso we'll send you this camera that you can start using and shooting for all of your adventures so yeah that's it for this video I hope you guys enjoyed it and that's it see you next time bye!
