3 QBs who are fighting for their jobs in 2023

playing quarterback in today's NFL is certainly high risk and high reward if you win you will get paid huge money and everyone will love you but if you struggle not only will you get ripped to shreds on Twitter you might lose your job extremely quickly the most well-known example of this is Josh Rosen Josh Rosen was selected 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals and the 2018 NFL draft Rosen would start only 13 games his rookie season and after going 3 in 10 in those starts he would be traded to Miami after the Cardinals selected Kyler Murray with the first overall pick just the very next year most recently the New York Jets selected Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the 2021 draft hoping they had just landed their quarterback of the future coming out of BYU Wilson impressed Scouts with his ability to make off-platform throws which led to people comparing him to Aaron Rodgers well after only two seasons and an 8 in 14 record with Zach Wilson as the starter the Jets just decided to trade for the actual Aaron Rodgers to replace him that being said your time to prove yourself as an NFL quarterback is extremely limited and Second Chances do not come often these three quarterbacks are fighting for their jobs this upcoming season starting off the list I have Baker Mayfield baker has had a very up and down career since he's entered the league the Browns surprisingly selected Baker with the number one overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft however the Browns were not exactly a great situation for a Young quarterback as Baker played under four different head coaches in just his first three seasons in the league this played a great effect on Baker's development as a quarterback and can be shown by his inconsistency throughout his career but in baker's third season he showed a lot of promise when he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002. 2 ending an 18-year drought the longest drought in the NFL at that time and not only that Baker led the Browns to their first playoff win since 1994 after defeating their division rival Pittsburgh Steelers 48-37 at Heinz Field giving Cleveland fans hope that Baker Mayfield was the man the man that was going to lead them towards NFL legitimacy after decades and Decades of hopelessness and disappointment so it's safe to say there were huge expectations on the Browns and Baker Mayfield heading into his fourth season unfortunately for Baker he failed to live up to the hype during an injury riddled year for Baker the Browns would finish the 2021 season with an 8-9 record which was tied for last place in the AFC North this led to the Browns making a blockbuster trade for former Houston Texans quarterback DeSean Watson which ultimately ended up with Baker getting traded to the Carolina Panthers after are beating out Sam darnold in Carolina it was announced that Baker would be the Panthers week one starter however Baker's stint in Carolina wouldn't last long as he would only start six games for the team and after having a 1-5 record and completing only 58 of his passes the Panthers decided to release Baker Mayfield in the middle of the 2022 season then he would be picked up by the Los Angeles Rams where he would start four games for them to finish the 2022 season Baker would go 1-3 as the starter in La which brought his total record on the season to two and eight this offseason the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield to a one-year deal worth up to 4 million dollars he will be competing against former second round pick Kyle Trask for the starting job in Tampa however good news for Baker is that this Buccaneers team has talent and has made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons so now it's time for Baker to go prove himself as a starting quarterback in the NFL but if he struggles odds are he he won't be a week one starter again next up on the list I have Trey Lance leading up to the 2021 NFL draft Trey Lance was skyrocketing up draft boards he was wowing Scouts with his big arm and athletic ability while playing at North Dakota State University Trey Lance had quite an impressive career however he only started in 17 games throughout his college career but in those 17 games Trey Lance put up video game like numbers throwing for over 2 900 yards and posting a touchdown to interception ratio of 30 to 1. and if that's not impressive enough he also totaled over 1300 yards on the ground and had 18 rushing touchdowns oh and I also forgot to mention that he was 17-0 in those games so here's a prospect In Trey Lance who is big strong and athletic doesn't turn the ball over and has a proven track record of winning every game that he plays in that sounds like a player every NFL coach would want on their team the San Francisco 49ers held the 12th overall pick in the 2021 draft and were coming off a season where their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had missed eight games due to an ankle injury injuries had been a common theme for Jimmy G throughout his time in San Francisco but just two years prior he led the team to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance but the 49ers fell in love with Trey Lance during the draft process so they shocked the entire NFL and traded up to third overall just to draft him heading into his rookie season the 49ers would decide to start Jimmy Garoppolo and let Trey Lance have some extra time to develop however Garoppolo impressed and led the 49ers to another NFC Championship Game appearance this made things a little bit complicated for the 49ers despite garoppolo's success head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Trey Lance would be the starter in week one of the 2022 season however Lance's time as the starter was cut short and only 2 where he would go down with a season-ending ankle injury early in the first quarter against the Seahawks then Garoppolo goes down with a season-ending injury in week 13 against the Dolphins which leaves them with a brock Purdy the last selection of the 2022 NFL draft Purdy proceeded to go undefeated as the starter and lead the 49ers to yet another NFC Championship Game appearance a game that they possibly could have won had Purdy not also gotten injured early in that game things are not looking good for Trey Lance if he fails to beat out Brock Purdy for the starting job this preseason the Trey Lance era will be over before it even started to finish off the list I have Mac Jones Mac Jones had some huge shoes to fill in New England when he was drafted 15th overall by the Patriots in 2021. the Patriots were just coming off their first losing season in 19 years after Tom Brady left to go to Tampa in his rookie season Mac Jones led the patriots to their winning ways leading the team to a 10-7 record and a playoff appearance however that playoff game was embarrassing as they lost to their division rival Buffalo Bills 47-17 this raised a lot of question marks surrounding Mac Jones were the Patriots winning in spite of Mac Jones that was the big question after all the Patriots won a game against the bills earlier in the season where Maca Jones only attempted three passes in the entire game so just to spice things up a little bit the Patriots decided to draft bayley zappy out of Western Kentucky in the fourth round in 2022. despite that there was no quarterback competition heading into the year and a Mac Jones would be the week one starter but it was in week three where Mac Jones suffered a high ankle sprain in the final minutes of the game versus the Baltimore Ravens that would mean veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer would get the start in week four where he would be knocked out of the game due to a concussion leaving the door open for Bailey zappy to get his first NFL action zappy would look pretty good as the starter in New England going 2-0 in his only two starts going into their week 7 matchup on Monday night football versus the Bears it was announced that Mac Jones was fully healthy and would return as the starter Mack would play three offensive series which ended up in two three and out drives and an interception after that Patriots fans could be heard Channing Zappy's name all throughout Foxboro and they got their wish as Mac Jones would be benched for bayley zappy however zappy couldn't lead the team to Victory and Mac Jones would be named the starter again the following week and he would finish the season with a 6-8 record now Mac Jones is in a tough situation this year in the AFC East because he's gonna have to go toe-to-toe with guys like Aaron Rodgers Josh Allen and to a tongue of iloa I think it's pretty safe to say if Mac Jones struggles this year the Patriots will explore their options at quarterback heading into next season because even if it's not Bailey zappy who replaces
