3 KITCHEN MISTAKES YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE!

i am in one of the worst kitchens i've been in in a really long time and it's the perfect way to show you what not to do three biggest mistakes i see in kitchen design first mistake i see all the time is the microwave over the stove and i happen to have a very high concentration of new york city firemen as my clients they all have it it's not a good idea for several reasons one it's a fire hat the second one being it's up here so if i'm taking something hot out it's at my face level not a good idea and the third is this is the hearth heart of the home so you're missing a great opportunity to make this a focal point make it pretty you can get rid of your microwave you can put it in a drawer you can put it in your pantry you can put it anywhere but don't put it over the stove [Music] second problem is the flow and in this kitchen there is an abundance of flow problem in here we have blind corner cabinets and what happens is everything gets lost back there it has no pullouts blind corner here so that's pretty much lost in a kitchen this size to lose all the storage in both corner cabinets like that it's not tiny it's about nine feet by 11 feet which is not terrible but everything else about it is they didn't consider the flow and the clearance to be able to work in here [Music] so you'll see right away the sink and the stove are right next to each other if i take a hot boiling pot and i want to put it down on a level surface i don't have one so this is not a good idea normally we want 12 to 18 maybe even 24 inches on either side of the stove to land a pot safely the dishwasher is supposed to go here there's a huge pipe underneath here it's never going to slide all the way back so it wouldn't be flush with the cabinets and it won't open the fridge is right here so if i tried to open the door it's going to get to here so every time i want to do dishes i'd have to slide this really big fridge that way and then slide it back again doesn't work last but not least the biggie we all know about your side piece you can't hide it every time you walk in your house it's the first thing we see so let's talk about the side piece what can we do about it this is the bane of my existence this is a simple three-quarter inch piece of wood this is an easy fix and i blame the cabinet companies because refrigerators are 28 or 32 inches deep that's just it the sub-zeros are a little less if they're built-in you don't have to worry about it but all the rest of us poor suckers do make those freaking panels and the cabinet above a refrigerator 28 or 32 inches deep depending on what kind of fridge we bring you the specifications for get that bring the specifications you've got to know the fridge first you look on pinterest things you can do panels cabinets hide your pantry there turn a 33-inch cabinet sideways and make it your broom closet or a three-inch deep bulletin board for all the kids paperwork and all that kind of crap do something with it or embrace it and leave it alone but don't do it half-assed i'm in this hideous kitchen again to measure the space and to draw it up and play with the design so we can fix it thanks for watching
