all right if you want to get a low priced car and get some mileage out of it you might do like this guy did with this 2007 honda civic 3 800 bucks when it had 100 000 miles on it now yes it's worse for wear now because he got in a fender bender and had parts replaced and they weren't painted so even though the old matrix here it's the same year it's a lot better shape but he doesn't care because it's his first car you could see the rest of the car this is when honda was doing those crappy paint jobs and you can see the clear coat has all come off on it but really it was his first car and so for 3 800 bucks he's already gone over a hundred thousand miles now the owner originally came from albania and this is first american car here he just decided hey i'll get something reliable like a honda they drive a lot of lower mercedes and albania's father's got one and they love them there but those are the ones that are made in germany not the ones made here so he made a smart choice now maybe it doesn't look like much but look what he's done in a hundred thousand miles i'd replace the starter big deal brake pads big deal he did it himself one wheel bearing he bolted it on and off himself you're easy cars to work on the parts don't cost that much and really a hundred thousand miles and that's all he had to do on it you can't argue that no yeah the hood props all off but i mean big deal things fall off i kind of like it this way now you can get it open a lot further and it won't hit you in the head check it out this is one modification i like look at all the room i'm not gonna bump my head when i get up they should actually make them this way hey honda listen to scotty redesign your car so the hoods go up like that normally and then people can work on them easier now this particular one has a 1.8 liter which is one of the best engines that honda ever made these things can run and run and for a little car they're plenty zippy enough with an automatic transmission he's one guy but it does have a back seat for small people now it is a somewhat older car he gets 29.30 on the highway not great by today's standards but then again you're gonna buy a car that costs 35 grand up he paid 3 800 you could buy an awful lot of gasoline with that little differential let me tell you it has a little bit of an oil leak it doesn't really burn oil it's got a little bit of oil leak that he can fix if he wants but i mean but when you consider it was fender bender and what the car looks like i don't think he cares if it leaks a little bit of oil let's start it up it's a honda it starts right up it's not shaking but in gear it's still not shaking honda knows how to make engines it's all comes a fancy scan tool let's see what the innards are like here we go called intelligent diagnosis and here's everything you can go through so here we go we'll do a smart scan got a couple of codes stuff we really don't care about since it was wrecked in the front we know it probably has a problem with the airbags not working we'll see what they are open to the left side airbag inflator open the driver's side seat sensor okay we got an old car it's been in a rack yeah the airbag system isn't going to work correctly anybody knows that use your seat belts buckle them up tight not going to spend a fortune repairing that system on this car it'd be probably more than the card's worth so use your seatbelts that's not a big deal as long as you use your seat belts so we'll forget those and we'll go to the body control module which has the code daytime running light for america circuit malfunction we already know that because one of them isn't working who cares by law in the united states you don't need daylight running lamps my matrix came with it i hated them so i disconnected them it was made in canada where it's law but it wasn't the united states so i just disconnected the stupid thing so who cares about that but we really care about is what's happening with the main power control unit so we'll go through that we'll look at fault codes for the main computer system there aren't any let's look at the data stream see what kind of shape this car is in start it up and here we go remember blue is good red is bad look at the fuel trim it's .99 and sometimes it's one 1.00 is perfect and this is a car with 200 000 miles on it they're all zeros there's no misfires as we go through everything's bloom it never ceases to amaze me that an old car like this with this kind of mileage is almost running perfect it's almost 1.00 sometimes it's 0.99 1.00 is perfect it's amazing what they did when they built these hondas and for you doubters the ac still works on this thing let's take it for spin see how it does and this might be a lowly civic but it's got power windows and yeah the roof has a bunch of thumb tacks holding the fabric on that kind of adds to the charm if you ask me i think it's cool now it is a civic so you know you're going to feel these rhode island bumps but considering that the struts are still original the thing doesn't really ride all that bad a little bitty car but it doesn't have little bitty car acceleration you step on the gas it's a honda it's got get up and go still with 200 000 miles on it and truthfully it handles quite well these hondas are little zippy cars for 3 800 bucks and considering he's put a hundred thousand miles on it with very little repairs and with 200 000 miles that transmission still shifts like a dream now in this case looks can be deceiving you might think oh man look at that thing i would not be surprised if this thing when taken care of would go another 200 000 miles it wouldn't shock me in the least now he bought a late model civic for a very little amount of money with 4 000 miles and he's got a 15 000 miles on now this is kind of his backup car but i would not be surprised at all to see this thing go another 200 000 miles if people take care of it they're pretty much bulletproof if you do just minor maintenance on the thing it may not look too good but it still runs fine if you close your eyes what you're not supposed to do when you're driving you'd think hey this car is not that old just don't open them too wide in broad daylight oh you'll see it looks old because he didn't paint the hood and it rusted for transportation he didn't go wrong and it can still be a good car for somebody if he was going to sell it on it'd be a great knock around car for somebody especially someone who doesn't care about the superficial parts of life they just want it to run and go good and so what if it looks who's gonna steal this thing right nobody now if you look at this volvo it's got a moose on it it looks like a regular volvo doesn't it the paint's coming off because they don't paint them other great it looks like an xc90 all-wheel drive the paint comes off them but it can run an awful long time this one has 225 000 miles on it which isn't surprising for volvos they can last a long time but what's under this hood is what's surprising it's got a transverse v8 engine and if you look at it it kind of looks like one of those four taurus shows that was a v6 there's a reason for this back in these days ford and volvo had a thing going so obviously something was going on with yamaha too the odd thing about this volvo v8 was it was actually designed by volvo but it was built in japan by yamaha now they're powerful engines they have a racing version of this with twin turbos that puts out 661 horsepower and the only problem they had when i first built them was vibration because it's a transverse motor right this has to fit where smaller engine used to fit so instead of a normal v8 with a wide bank these have a closer together bank the v angle on this v8 is 60 degrees you take a conventional american type v8 it's 90 degrees they smooth it they don't need a balance shaft so they found that they shook too much so they put a balance shaft in them and they work perfectly fine but if you owned one of these things before mid-2006 design the balance shaft had this weird bearing on it half was in the engine and half was exposed to the outside so if people who were fanatics would steam clean their engine it could damage the seal and if that bearing went out fifteen thousand dollars of engine work later you're not gonna be a happy man but if you're looking at one that's an early model 2006 or newer you want to make sure that that balance shaft doesn't have any kind of problems because if it does you want to fix it before you drive i had a customer buy one he didn't and the engine blew up and then he got rid of the car because he was going to spend 15 grand some people say it's possible take the radiator to much crap out volvo says the only way you can work on these engines is to pull the engine transmission out then work on them then put it back in enhance 15 grand to rebuild an engine so you don't want to do that well we'll open this one up and look inside this is still got the original engine in it got 225 000 miles and let's start it up sounds pretty good to me now this thing is worrying almost like a german machine it sounds great for all that mileage on it this owner his family has three of these v8 bubbles he likes driving like a maniac he loves the moose no one passes the moose ride he's lucky to get 13 miles a gallon the way he drives on the other hand when i had that 2013 shelby cobra gt500 i only got three miles a gallon when i was driving it around so it's better than that now he bought this thing used for 7 900 bucks he's put 75 000 miles on it and he loves the car you buy a brand new one when they were new yeah you're gonna lose a lot of money they don't make them anymore of course when volvo started to restructure everything they kicked the v8 out the window they decided their platform was going to be four-cylinder engines and hybrid cars so a gas hog v8 was not part of their plan so the swedes and the chinese who now own them said goodbye v8 but if you want to mess around in the snow this is all-wheel drive now he put 20-inch rims and put 9-inch wide tires on them that are wider than original he said it handles like a dream these v8 engines were fascinating design volvo designed them yamaha built them in japan you take care of them they can last a really long time but where do you see how they run now you can see it cruises quite nice and watch what happens when you step on the gas away we go it's extremely smooth they can go forever they have tons of power volvo gave up with a bad gas mileage went to electric cars hybrid cars and four-cylinder engines so they don't make these anymore and actually they never did make them they did design them but the japanese had yamaha built them all in japan and let me tell you they did a good job now this has guess what a toyota transmission it's an acen transmission it shifts like a dream watch you can barely even tell when it shifts going fast now you can't even tell when it shifts got a nice sound you pop these the headlights come out not six days of taking the bumper off taking half the car apart scraping the paint they just slide right out and these two bolts hold the bumper cover on you take them off the whole thing snaps off now most people don't know about these v8 volvos but to me this was the pinnacle of volvo technology kind of like the confederates in the civil war gettysburg was their high point well as far as i'm concerned this is the high point of volvo in terms of quality speed reliability it's not the crazy hybrid electric future that they have planned for us all an amazing machine you probably never heard of a volvo with a v8 in them you probably never seen the race car they made that has the same engine but it has twin turbos on it puts out 661 horsepower look it up you'll see it's a really cool looking vehicle and they were screamers guys tell me had friends they had them they got newer volvos 2019 and newer they hated them they said they were horrible compared to their old moose they wish they still had their moose you're built for the winter no rust on these babies you don't have to worry about rust on them they are solid built strong vehicles and as i mentioned before they have toyota ace and transmissions that are pretty much bulletproof this thing shipped as good as a brand new one with 200 something thousand miles on it you want to get a car like this and you don't care about the price of gasoline if a guy like me check it out if he says it's good go for it they don't make them like this anymore but interesting enough as you can see they were starting to worry about ecology even then this vehicle may include mercury added devices installed by the manufacturers please dispose of them as hazardous waste if you get rid of the car so you can see back in the day this one they were kind of green not with the gas mileage but with your disposal of it when you were done with it these things have tons of room and they got the third row seats check them out there's a battery you pull the seats out and now come the seats and the bottom slide out too fascinating designed vehicle they put a lot of thought into this thing but of course the main thing was the v8 engine designed by volvo but built by yamaha in japan and with the rims he put on you don't think it's a 2007. it looks a lot more like a much newer car now this is a 2007 toyota corolla that was bought for 2.01 three years ago by my customer as you can imagine 2.01 cents it was a family deal basically giving them the car three years later it still runs pretty good no matter how you maintain or don't maintain a toyota corolla as long as you keep engine oil in it and don't overheat the engine they can basically last in definitely not sure the homemade paint job leaves a little to be desired and the license plate is held on with a pair of vice grip pliers covered with ice and the side view mirror is held on with the mechanics helper duct tape because he ran into the side of the garage painted wheels and we've got a minion on the front hood but unlike many other economy cars these corollas are solid built take a chevy cruise i had a customer with a chevy cruze the first 80 000 miles two of the automatic transmissions went out and the third one was on its way out and heck in this 14 year old corolla the power door locks still work check it out even in the ice now it's got the usual spartan corolla interior and we'll start it up here this one's a standard look it's a racing toyota corolla all souped up well actually the pipe under there going to the muffler is rotted off he asked me hey scotty i kind of like the way it sounds is it going to hurt anything like that now of course over time if you have the exhaust off like that the check engine light will come on which is on now the car will probably run a little bit on the lean side and over tens of thousands of miles it can do some damage to the engine but on one of these toyota corollas i've seen people drive them 10 years that way and they still run good enough plus this is clarksville tennessee no inspection sticker soldiers here at 101st airborne they're all driving fancy cars that they've straight piped and take the mufflers and catalytic converters off and they're driving around they're not inspected here so you can drive them all you want if you lived in an area where you had to have a muffler and have the mission stuff yeah you'd have to fix it but it's not that big of a deal the pipe is rotted away you could weld on a new pipe or you could just buy a pipe or something bolted on it's not rocket science and under the hood is a bulletproof 1.8 liter toyota 4-cylinder engine which happens to be the same exact engine that's inside my toyota matrix only mine still has the beauty cover on it and i mean exactly the same they're both the same 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine basically toyota matrix were originally called toyota corolla matrix this is just toyota corollas with a different body style now this one might be the worst for wear but it still runs fine as you start it up starts right up of course it's got noise from that pipe so you don't want to be affixiated we'll crack the windows a little to let the air flow through that's the only real downside to having that hole you don't want to get carbon monoxide poisoning so roll your windows down if you're driving a baby like this and don't ever put it on recirculated air put it on fresh air so it's sucking air from the top up here and not having any of the vapors come up from the bottom now being a toyota corolla still got killer heat everything works on it now it doesn't need maintenance required well that's no biggie on this just turn it off then push the reset button down here and it will reset itself when you turn the key back on watch you can see the light's gone that just automatically comes up every 15 000 or so to get you ripped off to go to the dealer so they can charge you for things that don't need to be done that's kind of the truth it's a sales gimmick it's basically what it is no maybe noisy but it goes on down the road and power steering works fine it tracks straight it doesn't pull or shake and it's actually not a bad ride it takes the bumps decently brakes work perfectly fine don't make any noise no it's not a race car even though it kind of sounds like one but it does have a standard transmission so when this car passes by we'll give it the gas and see what happens it's spinning the wheels too much power well at least too much power today because it's icy on the road but on the other hand with that icy road you can see it didn't even skid all that much they were solid built especially if you get one for two dollars and one cents you can't look that gift horse in the mouth all in all this thing still runs good and if you want it to be quiet well just take your foot off the gas when it's just cruising it's not too bad but as soon as you step on the gas it's a race corolla not past the road test of flying colors but you can see it does have the check engine light on and the air bag light so let's get the scan tool out we'll just plug it in easy to get tony's toyotas and it's got six trouble codes oxygen sensor circuit which doesn't surprise me at all because if you got a exhaust missing it's gonna mess with that data for sure name code for a different sensor they're all oxygen sensor codes so far okay then it's got a code for the computer another oxygen sensor and another oxygen sensor none of which surprises me because the exhaust has got that big leak and that messes with the oxygen sensors then the computers are going to get weird data sometimes it can even trip that it's got a problem which it has in this case got the air bag light so let's go to seat restraining system see what that's all about so it's got a code for the front airbag sensor on the left side and another card for the front airbag sensor well guess what this baby's in o7 it's got those stupid takata airbags it was probably never taken in under warranty if you have a car like this all you gotta do is get the vin number call a toyota dealer and they'll tell you no we haven't fixed the cottage airbags take it and they'll fix them for free you can unplug the fuses if you really want it to yourself so you don't have to worry about them blowing up but you know i would never do that as a mechanic it's your car you can do what you want with your car and of course like i said you get the seat belts you buckle them in they work quite well race cars don't have air bags they got seat belts yeah they're a little fancier but still you can even get this fix free probably because it's got the stupid takata airbags back in 0.7 but not just for giggles we'll look at the live data and as we can see here it's really not doing that bad even with the exhaust coming off the short-term fuel trim is 4.7 and the long is 2.3 that means that it's adding a little bit fuel say scotty guessed right i told you when exhaust comes off like that you got a big hole in it it often makes the engine run somewhat lean the fact that it's adding 4.7 fuel shows that yes indeed the computer thinks it's running lean because that hole in the exhaust is making it run lean so it's adding a little fuel to try to make it run right and it runs perfectly fine so even though this thing's been used and abused it's still running pretty good it just shows the overall build quality of these things and this particular one wasn't even built in japan new united motor that means it was built in the united states and here you can see the original color of the car was originally a red car not what it looks like today well like i said if this was a comparable car american car like a chevy cruze i'd say the noise what it looks like it's time for the junkyard not this thing it might go another 10 20 years i would fix the exhaust myself i get my welding i just get a new pipe and weld it on it's not that big of a deal you got any monthly shopping have that done on but like i say the kid kind of likes the noise it's like a racing roll it out beauty's in the eye of the beholder isn't it so now you know looks can be deceiving in a car so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell [Music]
