hello golfers PGA teaching professional Todd Kolb director of instruction for US golf TV and a Todd Kolb Golf Academy today we're talking about one of the things that I am very very passionate about and that is chipping getting the ball up and down and why am i passionate about that because a lot of the information unfortunately that you've been given could actually be wrong we're going to talk about that the three most common things that people tell you how to improve your chipping is simply wrong we're going to talk about that more importantly we're going to show you and help you understand what you need to be doing to get that ball up and down so let's get into it first of all three chipping mistakes three things if you struggle with your chipping I guarantee that you have been told or either you read it in a magazine or you saw it on TV or maybe even the local golf profession or somebody told you number one handle in front right we've all heard that if you've played any golf at all one of the first things they tell you when it comes to chipping is move the handle lean the shaft board I'm going to tell you why that is just simply dead wrong and why it's probably killing your chipping number to move the ball back right that's the second thing they always tell somebody when the new to the game move the ball way back in your stance once again it's not right unless you're trying to hit a specialty type shot which we'll talk about a little bit number three is what do they tell you to do hit down on the ball they really want you to hit down on the ball like you're going to drive that Club and drive that ball down into the ground now we're going to talk about how there's a hint of truth in that and hitting down on the ball but not to the point where we're just trying to drive the darn thing down in there so if these are three things that you've maybe heard about your chipping if you struggled with your chipping then the rest of this video is for you because we're going to answer some questions we're going to unlock some secrets and most importantly we're going to get you hit and better chip shots around the green so let's go ahead and get into it so I'm going to erase this word mistakes because we're going to be done with that we're not making any more mistakes we're going to start getting back on track so the first thing we're going to talk about all right is what I call effective effective loft and bounce affective lost and effective bounce now I'm sure you've heard of the word lost we know what that is each golf club has lost on it right the one I have here today has 58 degrees of loft but also there is bounce there's bounce on the golf club now what is bounce well bounce is the curve that you see on the bottom of the club head without diving real deepened into the design of the golf club you need to know first of all what bounce is and you need to know why it's probably the best invention in wedges so bounce is the curve on the bottom so if I put this on a flat surface you'll see the leading edge comes off the ground some clubs have more curve more bounce than other clubs all right but here's what you need to know bounce is your friend right bounce is good it makes a shot easier because it allows the club to do exactly what the word says bounce it allows the club to bounce through the turf so the first thing is is when we hit good chip shots we've got to have effective loft and we've got to have effective bounce all right so do you remember the first suggestion of the mistake that we erased where you're racing those mistakes do you remember the first one move the handle forward right okay so let's think about this I've got a shot I've got my 58-degree wedge so I'm assuming that I want 58 degrees of loft when I hit the golf shot because if I wanted 45 degrees of loft I have a club that has that it's called a pitching wedge if I wanted 30 degrees of loft at the moment of impact I have a club like that it just has a different number on it so the first thing is an effective loss so when you hit the shot you want to deliver the loft on the golf club to the ball that's designed to and the only way to do that is to deliver it in what we would call a neutral shaft angle if I deliver this shaft angle I have deal off to the golf club all right and that's most people know that you probably you're thinking you're self-taught I already I knew that already but here's what you probably didn't know it is that when you lean the shaft forward this is important listen to this when you leave the shaft forward you negate all the bounds the leading edge moves down now can you hit good shots from that position yeah you can but you darn well better be practicing a lot because when you negate the bounce remember bounce is one of the best things you got going for you when you take it away you decrease your margin of error because the club is not going to bounce through the turf so that is the first thing that I want you to know when you lean the shaft forward yes you lose the loft which first of all doesn't make any sense on its own because if you wanted less loft just grab a club with less but that has less loft on it but most importantly you lose all of the bounds that hopefully that makes sense if it doesn't make sense let me know but to put a comment below ask a question because I want to get that answer because this is if you can do this you're going to ship better okay you're going to ship better and like I said earlier make sure you give me a comment below if you need that all right the second thing is we tell people allotted so we will move the ball back in the stance right so let's talk about what is that that's ball position now where should the position of the ball D we're hitting a chip shot no I'm not going to dive into all the details on the setup because that's a whole nother video but basically I like to feet pretty close together I like a little bit of pressure for it I personally like the ball in pretty much the center of the stance maybe slightly back but I'm never telling somebody unless it's a unique situation which I'll talk about in just a second so hold on for that but unless it's a situation with a normal lie I want the ball in the center to maybe slightly back why would that be okay think about it remember our first thing here the most important thing is effective loft and bounce that's everything with chipping so when you move the ball back in your stance when I move that ball back let's say this is the balls in the center here when I move the ball back ninety-nine out of a hundred people keep the shaft forward so they move the ball back but they leave this shaft forward now they have d lofted the golf club and they've locked all the bouts so it's not so much that the position of the ball being moved back is bad it's that when they move the ball back they leave the handle forward and now they have a forward shackling which is the number one killer when it comes to chipping alright does that make sense hopefully that does like I said earlier if it doesn't you know be sure to comment below or ask a question or maybe you don't agree with that that's okay let me hear your reason why and maybe you can teach me something as well so ball position get the ball basically kind of in the center of the stance maybe slightly forward alright number three I'm just going to call this the motion now what do they tell you well you want to hit a good shot you got hit down on the ball hit down on the ball I mean they've been saying that for a long time and it just simply is not right does the club travel in a descending motion at the moment of impact yes it does I don't think I don't think there's very few people who would probably disagree with that the club has a descending that's the word though it's descending it's not down when people tell you to hit down on the golf ball what happens they take the club and they literally stick it into the ground think in terms of a descending blow versus a down blow and I think what'll happen is is that the club will still be descending alright it will go more through so it's down and true not just down does that hopefully that makes sense alright because I know we're playing with words a little bit there but it's important when you get as a coach when you give somebody a word okay that that imparts that implies a feeling to them when they're golfing and the word down to most people indicates literally down and stop not down and through so I like the word descending blow verses down hopefully that'll help just a little bit that makes sense like I said earlier hopefully this is making some sense to this number one key of effective law and effective on so let me give you I want to give you one tip all right one one tip right here all right I'm just going to call this this is the one tip that I give almost everybody when it comes to chipping and this is this is going to eliminate almost all of this this is the one tip to kind of cover most all of our bases all right and that's what I call the movement of the butt end of the club okay so what does that mean you're thinking what in the heck is he talking about what does that have to think okay so first of all you got the club head right this is the butt end of the club right here this is what we're talking about the movement of the button did this right here this is the key to hitting good chip shots we're always focused on this part but what you do initially initially with this part of the club will determine everything so here's what I want you to do when the club moves away from the golf ball the initial movement of course the club head is going to go away from the target right I want the bottom end of the club to also move slightly away from the target okay this is what most golfers do they move this part away and they move the top part forward so the butt end goes towards the target the head goes away from the target they do this motion okay so what does that look like ah looks like first of the steak doesn't it it looks like the forward shaft lean right and when we got forward shaft lean we got no loss we got no bounce we got the ball back or stabbing down right no wonder you're chunking it every single time you're in a cheap shot okay it doesn't make any sense at all so what I want you to do is when you move the club move the handle we're going to use the hand I use but into the club it's kind of a technical term but maybe it'll help you remember it better I don't know but the handle move the handle in the same direction as the club head when it goes away on the ball now I know there's going to be some of you out there okay that's okay that's what I love about golf there's always differences of opinions and thoughts that's what makes it the greatest game alright you might be disagreeing with everything I've said and that's okay I want to hear I want to hear your point of view let's talk about it let's hash it out a little bit I'm not saying and at the bottom of the club the handle in the club it moved the same amount we all know that's not true all I'm saying is this in the initial movement away from the ball if you can move the handle and the head the same direction you will maintain effective law and effective us and you will guarantee to hit better chip shots all right so let's let's circle back here let's circle back and hopefully like I said earlier got some comments some thoughts on this or we've got a ton of information on chipping if you like what you've heard here be sure you're following us on our social media or YouTube you can follow me on Instagram you can follow us on Twitter we're all over the place and we've got some good information help you play better golf so here's the thing at the end of the day you are probably told if you saw what you're chipping to move the shell forward lean it forward move the ball back and hit down on the ball those are all things that are negating taking away law and they're taking away bounce what you want to do is you want to have effective loft and bounce by simply getting the ball pretty centered alright getting the shaft in a pretty neutral position to start and then that initial key when you start the swing move the butt end of the club away from the target and when you do that you will hit down on the ball but it will be a descending blow through the ball and when you do those couple concepts that's definitely going to help you're tripping alright so hopefully you've liked what you've heard here we've covered a lot of ground if you want more about want to follow more of what we're doing be sure to follow us on our YouTube channel you can follow me an Instagram we've got our Twitter account we are all over the place or you can also certainly go to our website at US golf tv.com that's our home base that's where we've got
