[Music] do [Music] well for those of you that are are familiar with oklahoma city we're in midtown which for those of you who aren't familiar from out of state or out of town this is a really youthful hip area with fun restaurants shops breweries it's very close to downtown and it's just like i say it's just a young people magnet and old people magnet too i guess because we come down here quite frequently to stuart so let's go in check out this darling plant shop called plant people it's at 1212 north hudson i don't want to hit you stuart hey ladies thank you so much for having us here today so i tell you what we're here for a couple of different reasons i want to do kind of an overview of your shop and talk about how fun and wonderful it is but also stuart is looking for some plants for his office so if you don't mind we're going to kind of look first get some ideas and then we'll catch up with you gals and talk specific plants and all of that kind of business okay great thanks so in addition to all of these obviously wonderful house plants they have here they also have containers for them they've got other goodies they've got totes they've got potting soil they've got plant food things like that and i think we'll clarify this with them later but i think they also do workshops and planting instruction and things of that nature here but what i love about it is like i say they sell wonderful house plants popular house plants containers baskets things like that but i think as importantly they just are a real service to the community because so many people have jumped on the house plant bandwagon some new gardeners inner indoor gardeners but some experienced and so what i have found is that they also provide a great community service because people come in they bring their plants or they ask questions about what's wrong with their plants is it underwater over watered does it have pests and these gals provide just invaluable information which is a real community service so it's so fun when i was young when i was in high school and college i you know those were that was in the 70s and i was just all about house plants that real kind of oh fun indoor decor bohemian vibe that is every bit as popular right now and so it's fun to visit shops like this that sell and showcase how those plants can be displayed what kind of light they need and how they can really enhance your interior decor and and and also help you express your own personal style so stuart as we kind of go around look at different plants that kind of capture your eye [Music] and also the scale of plant i'm not really sure you haven't told me exactly what size of plants all sizes that you're looking for and what kind of light do you have in your office one big window on eastern face okay so i'm trying to think it's it's got pretty bright indirect light it's big and in the evening yeah so they have pathos that yeah philodendrons um swiss cheese plants they've got fiddly figs they've got begonias they've got pothos they've got ponytail plants they've just got all sorts of different things and we'll have them give us some tips on what types of plants rubber plants are best for low light conditions bright light conditions that kind of thing i love this concrete planter here which which one a dracena mrcena in the corner yeah it always has kind of looked like a corn stalk to me but now that you said it it does and look at this whimsical that always looks dr seuss-ish to me like they should be yeah and and you guys if i am misnaming any of these plants it's been a while since i i have grown a lot of house plants so if i am misrepresenting any of them by all means correct me in um in the comments below and here's my question of the day for you guys are you a house plant enthusiast and if so if you could recommend one house plant to viewers what would it be whether it was because of your favorite it was because it was very easy to grow or because it was especially dramatic just let us know what one house plant you would recommend the other thing is they have not only lots of of house plants but they have they have different um kind of categories of house plants because they've got some obviously for simple containers but they've got hanging baskets they've got really large specimens yeah isn't this cool i love the way they've got it displayed on these baskets here so if a lot of you are into that kind of ethnic decor coupled with house plants and i think we'll ask her about it but i believe christina said she practically had to move out of her of her apartment because she had her house because she had so many houseplants and i can definitely relate to that [Music] these are look at these stuart these are fun you like those stuart you you definitely are finding some things that you like you really like that okay that tells me you like the variegated stuff an interesting observation you seem to really like the variegated stuff and the highly textured things so we'll keep that we'll keep that in account only pick some out they also have lots of the little tiny cacti and things like that that are so popular right now and this look at this one this is a form of sense of area and it's very fun yes it is i believe it's as easy as the other and then i think they also they also have things here where you can select your own container and then they will pot it up in the container for you if it requires replanting now this is the type of thing stuart let me show you this these are the types of containers right now that seem to be really popular i've noticed them in some of the higher end stores like this in west elm and things but also even places like trader joe's when they're potted up and you can buy them in a container they've got really fun whimsical containers that really beautifully enhance the plant and they've got totes with their names on it oh this is fun joyful dirt succulent must be a food sprinkle joyful dirt directly on soil and water in okay that's good to know if you're not sure i'm always a little bit confused about what to feed your succulents [Music] aren't these cute stuart i might need one of these what do you think do you think i need a plant-people t-shirt and that fun and look over here stuart oh you know what see this i'm i'm moving too fast for you as always stewart i apologize and especially because you're really looking you're really shopping for yourself aren't you okay as always i get too enthusiastic but aren't those fun you i know i started to say you have one and you know who else i think has um does carrie have one carrie has one i i think my my son has one and these are great if you're propagating leaves because you can take a leaf an individual leaf or like over there that little individual spider of a spider plant and you can root things in there and then you can propagate you can propagate and get more more plants from just a few and then they've got all of these really fun little cacti and things so let's let's go oh look at this isn't this cute stewart oh you know who needs this my gambling friends my gambling friend stuart that's pretty cute okay let's see if we can catch up with the gals well this store it just it goes after my heart in so many different ways so let me introduce you to two of my new best friends so this is christina and this is brenda they co-own this shop since when november when we opened the shop uh in 2021 but we opened our plant people brand around november july 2012 yes july of 2020 okay and so this has a wonderful story behind it because with every um with every kind of problem there lies in in some cases an opportunity and you gals started this business after covet correct yes just a few months after just a few months out the outbreak in oklahoma city in oklahoma city so you had to quit your jobs and so then you just started this business so then i have to ask was it over cocktails yes what was your preferred cocktail of choice that brought you to this i was epiphany i was making her try my bloody mary's i was kind of topping up my bloody mary's and i made her one and over tacos and my husband bruised and so we were she was trying to you know make we were trying to make her husband try beer and that is yeah it was just one of those nights on the deck when we were still wanting to be with our friends and have a safe bubble but we were spending more time outside and yeah just to kind of still be around each other but it was definitely an adjustment that's for everyone yeah so out of hardship friendship and a little bit of alcohol yeah our new business was was spawn so you are just a house plant crazed individual i am told i i got a lot yeah yeah yeah does she need an intervention no i mean i i'm not super attached i share my plants friends come on i share i drop off sometimes i'm even like where is that one she's like oh i gave it to someone so and i'm like oh you guys you have one of your children away cher my sister comes and visit her friends come over so i don't mind i don't mind sharing i i've got a lot to share well but the other thing is is i find when i used to grow a lot of houseplants when i was younger and single it was such an important part of my decor and my aesthetic the expression of my personal aesthetic do you find that that's still the case with people who come in here and shop absolutely they're trying to find things that look good in a corner i need something for this corner to balance out this side of the room so they're really trying to use plants to bring life and decorate for sure and i think also it's a coping mechanism because it really makes people feel comforted and feel better during these stressful times to have something that they need to nurture that's living and breathing and growing and enhancing their environment and they're supposed to be healthy for you definitely agree i think during the pandemic it became almost therapeutic you know it went from hobby to you know just really giving them something to do with their time and and yeah smart they're therapeutic for sure great comment stuart and the other thing is i i find that they're great poor stewart they're they're just they're such great companions because i mean every morning if when you would see a new leaf begin to unfurl we lose our mind i know i know it just becomes you just become i was just telling her i was like my hoya bloomed and i'm like here's pictures of its flowers yes and i'm happy for but then kind of jealous because i've had a hoya rope for a few years and i've yet to get my flower so i'm like we do great but you just have to experience it vicariously through brenda yeah my plants will do well and she might be struggling with the same one or vice versa and i'm like can you just i can't deal with this right now like can you rehab her and she will she has a rehab corner a little hospital yeah well that's the other thing that i i especially like about house plants is it's so easy to share them i mean it's so easy to propagate them and i don't want to spend a lot of time on it today but could we come back and you guys could share some propagation techniques absolutely with houseplants so that also leads me stuart if you don't mind focusing on the back so you guys sell the stuff that you would need you sell the potting mixes probably fertilizer pots obviously that kind of thing do you do planting workshops and stuff here or do you give instruction here we do give instruction plenty of instruction we've repotted for customers who come in um they either bring a pot and buy a plan or vice versa or whatever they want to put together we'll pop for them we haven't done any workshops though one before we opened our place right before we were opening our neighbors elk valley they opened their doors to us and we're like hey you can have a workshop here so we did like a succulent yeah remember the succulent garden workshop over there and so we definitely want to bring that in here too we just have to you know be able to manage like the covered rice sure absolutely and the crop yeah yeah yeah still trying to navigate our plantings yeah well i i think plus it's getting to be gardening season yeah and and house plants too are coming into their high growth phase so even though they have been inside they too are starting to kind of wake up and it's time to fertilize some of them now i always in my videos i ask a question of the day of of all of my followers and viewers and i ask the question if they could recommend if they grow house pellets and if they could recommend any one plant anyone a house plant to someone what would they recommend so i will ask you guys put you on the spot too first of all can you name a favorite house plant and here's my next question because plant parenthood has become so popular right now like my my son and daughter-in-law have a huge family of plants and they name all of all of their children do you guys name your plants i've only named one of my plants yeah um it was only one two pepperoni ripple and i loved it i named it benjamin like benjamin button i don't know but that's the only one of all my plants i've named i haven't really yeah i've named my ponytail palm i have a pretty large ponytail palm in my house and um well my daughter named her francesca so she has a name but i'm more of like a personality assigner you know like please give you vibes and personalities and they kind of so you know some are flirty some are sassy summer you know you're too much for today like like more of an assigner of personality values my kids they try to be really really clever like they they named their their aloe vera vera wang oh my gosh and that's so fancy so it becomes it becomes a whole dynamic it goes far beyond it gives you joy and pleasure beyond just the plant themselves okay so now i want to highlight and focus on specific plants that you guys would recommend so i come in stuart comes in let's say stuart comes in and really doesn't know anything about house plants he wants something that's very easy what would you say if you're a newbie indoor gardener what are the three easiest house plants you would recommend i i always ask what their light is like what is your light like um do you want to hover over your plant or do you just want to set something beautiful in a space and just be able to walk away and they're okay so we have some plants that you can do that with um zz plants are very popular for easy they don't demand a lot of attention yeah definitely these are some of the easies we have so this is the ravens easy um so their newer growth comes out this lime green color and as they mature they turn this purple black color and these are the regular zzz's um and so the reason why these are so low maintenance in their roots they have like these rhizomes that holds in all the water and nutrients they need so you really just need to water these about once a month oh wow just kind of they kind of thrive on neglect and i'm sorry did you say these were low light or in low light so one thing the other thing i love about certain indoor house plants and things is i love the fact this has a shiny leaf so that reflects light beautifully it would reflect candlelight it would reflect lamp light or whatever which is pretty and do you guys recommend that especially on large leafed plants that that the growers periodically wipe down the leaves and stuff to keep that dust at bay and increase light that's really important some leaves do have a natural sheen to them we love that about them ravens are one of them they have this natural sheen but every once in a while you'll need to get a damp towel and clean the dust the watermarks especially oklahoma has really hard water and so it creates a lot of hard water spots clean them off and it gives you a chance to kind of check underneath for those pests that kind of show up when you're not expecting it um it definitely helps with the light that they get and if you run a humidifier um it helps absorb some of that moisture that you're putting in the air yeah i definitely need to have a humidifier and make because that might get so dry during the artificial heat of winter are you taking notes on all of this [Music] so if i were going to recommend a plant one plant for your office i would definitely recommend this easy all i had to say was thrives on neglect it will it will we have a winner and the other yes the raven and this is the one we're mostly familiar with okay now would you point out to stuart also the importance of drainage and how you've got these sitting in the plastic container is sitting in kind of like cash po that may or may not have a drainage hole in it yes so these are nursery pots when you receive your plants they're going to have these holes at the bottom that's really important especially for plants that do not like to sit in damp soil this is one of them it's best to let them dry out really well water thoroughly let it drain and then you can set it right back in your pot and that way water is not collecting at the bottom but the pot itself will also protect the surface from any kind of water damage or anything okay so stewart i have to ask you which do you find more appealing this black and and bright green or the traditional color the traditional i think that one back in the corner that is what it's really tall okay can we put our name on that one yeah absolutely okay let's put our name on that one okay let's move on to then number two what would be another uh another plant you would recommend well i would say the pothos here oh yeah that is that is classic 70s spoon bar this is the plant we all grew up with right we our mothers our grandmothers we all had that aunt you know that had a house full so this is a very common plant even though it's very common it's still very popular we think and for someone that's new to plant life and wanting to bring in something they they're very forgiving so if you forget to water it it's not going to be super upset with you it might complain and it might get a little bit a little bit but it's forgiving just give it a good drink and give it some good medium to bright light it'll help keep all that beautiful variegation in the leaves and so yeah this is definitely a great plant for a beginner and they also make great hanging baskets and you've probably seen a lot of them sitting on top of an armoire or something or a fireplace mantle where it kind of cascades down the side you know the tendrils will get so long i've seen people even practically make curtains out of them yes yes that would be a that would be a really fun hanging basket yes do you like the variegation yeah okay okay that's really pretty you can look to see if there's another one you want of that variety but that's i think that would be good for you too and those propagate real easily you can just snip one off would you point out where you'd snip it off on the tendril if you wanted to create like if you wanted to root one of these so if you were going to propagate these nodes right here you see the nodes there around the joints of the plant you would snip there and there's a node right there and set that in water so you can snip under it so you could set it in your little hanging water feature stewart and that would make and that would make another plant okay so your third and your final plant these here this is another plant that we're all familiar with the mother-in-law's tongue yeah yeah the mother what's the other nickname snake plant sansavari is the the science name of these and this is also another plant that doesn't mind being ignored let them dry out completely in between waterings if you water too often these stems will get really wet and mushy at the bottom so you want to avoid that and just water yeah once a month really low light you guys these can tolerate real low life low light but what i have found is i went to visit my brother once and he had mammoth one of these that he had set in a corner from distance it looked great because it was a prominent architectural feature in his house it looked great um it was very very healthy but when i got up close to it he had really neglected it because i don't think it had been dusted yeah in years yeah so if you set a plant like this and you tuck it away in an area where it looks great make sure that you periodically wipe them down wipe them down and remove the cobwebs yeah these are really great like air purifiers um and actually nasa did a study on these hands of areas and they're known to produce oxygen at night so they're actually recommended in like your bedrooms and stuff like that just kind of help the air levels in your house yeah we love researching things like that a lot of plants that we carry um are great for your air quality to clean the chemicals and out of your air that you don't even know we're there well and it sounds kind of silly but if they're kind of like green pets i mean i i really feel like when i was single and living alone that to me they were as much company maybe almost as a pet would because i would really enter i don't know that i talked to them so much but i definitely would really interact with them you know take care of them and groom them and it was really it was a really fun thing the other thing that i just love every time i have been in here you get so much traffic of people coming in and asking how do they how do you take care of something or what's wrong with my plan that happens a lot they have some of our neighbors um we that we have in the community um we get a lot of messages on our instagram too a lot of dms you know and they'll ask you know to help with something and we'll say well just send us a picture send us a video let me take a look and then if we have some tips right then we'll share them sometimes we have to do a little research ourselves yeah um we might send them an article or something like that to help them um troubleshoot we call it let's troubleshoot this problem well and that's the other thing about growing plants is you just continue to learn new and interesting things even about pests you're still learning something so i just i absolutely love that well i i cannot convey to you how much i enjoy this this is you guys really need to come to this part of oklahoma city it's just such a hip place and plant stores in particular are really taking off because it's such a wonderful it's such a wonderful hobby now lastly i have to know where you got your darling glasses oh and i'm sure all our viewers will want to know too both of you zeni optical has been my go-to place for glasses for quite a few years z-i-n-i z-e-n-n-i optical so um they you know if you want lots of accessory type colors and stuff or just like glasses i have some sunglasses there i'm really hard on my glasses and playing with my kids when they're really small my glasses would break all the time so it wasn't they're very reasonably priced and inexpensive so it was okay to have a feedback horrible thing yeah i tell all my friends about zany obstacles yeah so yeah like well it is true because you don't know how many times you step on them yeah and especially if you're you know again when you're young you're always like a struggling graduate student struggling poor and and my eyes changed so much yeah then that i was constantly having to get a new you know a new prescription so that's a good tip too i just had to share because they're they're really very stylish and we're also all about about style here so if they want to find you on social media where do they find you plant people shop on instagram plant people shop on facebook and so yeah that's how you'll find us there okay and you guys you know stop by ask them
