last winter I made a bunk bed for the spare room in my house and I want to make a matching set of bookcases for it today now the bunk bed was made with dimensional lumber so I want to continue the theme of dimensional lumber projects for everything else that's going in this room I'm going to make two bookcases that are each 7 feet tall about nine and a quarter deep which is the width of these 2 by 10 boards and also about 28 inches wide all for the back panels will receive a rabbet along the back inside edge to receive the back panel and to cut that rabbit I'm using my laminate router my small trim router with a quarter inch down cut spiral bit I really like using a spiral bit as opposed to a straight bit because it creates a nice clean edge and also the down cut bit will create the nicest final pass edge that you will see I can't stand using a router most of the time because of the horrible dust collection so for this particular router I do have a small edge guide attachment that I've hot glued a shop vac attachment right to so that I can suck up the best right at the cutting tip because of the size router bit that I used I had to take three passes to remove all of the material and it really didn't take as long as I thought it would take now I didn't go all the way to the ends because I'm going to square one side up at the miter saw and then cut them all to their final length which is 7 feet all these shelves will be in dedos and the side panels and I don't want the joinery to be exposed on the front of this I want it to match the bunk bed so I'm going to make a stopped data the data will be one and a half inches wide to accommodate the shelf and also it's going to stop about a half inch or so before coming through the front side of the side panel I'm laying out all of my dedos first before I make any cuts because I don't want to accidentally make a cut in the wrong spot and I'm using a larger router for this because I'm removing a lot more material than what I was on the back rabbit Oh yesterday I was able to finish up all the dedos and the side panels before a storm blew through and today I've cleaned up all the day dough's with a chisel as needed now I go ahead and cut all these shelves to their final lengths and trim them to their final width at the table saw I've taken one of my shelves that has already been ripped to its final width and I've cut this square notch here in the front and the dimensions of this square is equal to the depth of the stopped dado and what this will allow is the shelf to be slid into place and it will completely cover the stop dado from before and I'll have a nice even transition on the front with no exposed joinery I made this notch cut on the table saw to set up the table saw for this cut I've made sure that the height of the table saw blade is equal to the depth of the dado and also the distance from the outside face of the blade to the fence is also equal to the depth of the dado and anytime you're doing something like this it's always a good idea to make a test piece first to make sure everything is nice and fitting before you go ahead and cut all of your actual material now to make this easier to push through it a little bit safer to push through I've attached a sacrificial piece of plywood to my miter gauge in the table saw and this will not only help me stabilize the material as I push it through but this little foot down here on this side of the plywood will push the waste piece away from the blade and leave it behind the blade as I return the miter gauge to the start position of the cut the glue was a little bit crazier than I thought and I don't have enough clamps long clamps to do both bookcases at the same time so I'm going to let this sit for about an hour before I get the second one in clamps and at that point I'll be in the home stretch just cut the back panels to size a little bit of sanding here and there as needed and then I'll apply a wax finish to both of these you you you you
