well guys this is a YouTube viewer from Sacramento I bought this pickup all the way up here for me to work on I sure hope I don't let him down 2001 it was a six no six drives it a couple hundred miles if you drive it a couple hundred miles it'll throw at 12:22 and at 12:23 koude and why is my scanner not waking up just getting hooked up to it I want to monitor it what we're gonna do how they're gonna strain working for you Tony I gotta fix that to you but what we're gonna do in this thing we're gonna do a fuel pressure return test I've got the Miller tools I have some of them already but some of the fittings I didn't have then I realize I didn't even really need that much if you really want to do the test it's really not that bad I'll explain it to you when we get on the road what it does he had it flashed it wouldn't pass the monitor did one of the monitors wouldn't complete the monitor tests of course California him being down there in Sacramento they have to smile them every two years and that wouldn't pass a monitor so he ended up taking it to the dealer which he regrets and [Music] they of course they do like every stinkin dealer does they put their latest flash file or update in it and they do something on that latest flash file that makes the fuel system parameters really really sensitive on them and if the rail pressure isn't exactly right on them it'll throw that 12 22 and 12 23 so what's going on here there's something that's not quite right in the fuel system more than likely inject your feed tubes or the injectors themselves for returning too much fuel so what you got to do is run this thing down the road we're gonna drive it about probably 20 30 miles we're gonna come back with it still running well I'm gonna park it in the driveway here with it running walking there I've got all my stuff that I need laid out bring it back out shut it off put my ninth out my nine thousand twelve Miller fitting in the back line coming off the back side of the filter head so what happens is the cp3 pumps got a line coming back to the filter head it goes through the filter head to another banjo on the other side and tees in to the returned going back to tank and also the injector return comes around from the cylinder head and tees into that too so that fitting there will I salute the cp3 pump which will also isolate the fuel line coming off the injector return tube so you'll run one into one bucket and run another one into another bucket the first one will run on by both both of them in both bucket both returns into one bucket will start the pickup at you'll get in here let's see wait now I'm screwed up here we got to go back good a special function and then you'll want to go to idle of enable/disable injector kill test that's not where I wanted to eat was a system check was where it might have been fuel pressure override test right there and what that does is that will ramp up the RPMs for however long the test I think it's it's either thirty seconds or a minute what it does it controls the fuel control actuator it sets the fuel control actuator twenty thousand psi at a certain are padding 1200 rpm and once the test is timed out you'll set it off and then you'll measure your fuel in your container you if you have over 240 milliliters of returned fuel then you replace all six injectors if you have between 160 and 240 then you isolate it with a cap and start going well actually that's not right if you have between 160 and 240 then you go back and in torque all your injector returned your all your injector feed tubes and your head okay and then put your lines back on then you do the test again and if it still fells then you start capping on one at a time which we won't even do that for Paul because he's already told me if one fells he wants them all changed so if we get between 160 and 240 we're gonna torque the feed tubes and if the feed tubes and we do the test again and it fails again then we'll change all six injectors but here's the feel pressure override test so I'm gonna go drive it I've got his inner fender off and his fender flare off so I can get in there easier he's probably gonna be mad he'll see the mud on the side of his pickup when we had all that rain my driveway here was solid mud and I drove it to town one day to get parts trying to get that code to come on and I didn't realize when I call I called and recalled me and I didn't realize that it took two or three hundred miles of drive and I said [ __ ] I just I just went 60 miles anyways that's what we're doing right here I kind of like to get into the live data as well let me see if I can get into the live data look at desired versus actual rail pressure fuel pressure sensor fuel pressure set point that's what you want put that at the top all right and we need to check his air conditioner out too and it's not working but the most biggest thing is get this fuel system right and the air conditioner is gonna be pretty important which I'm pretty certain it's gonna be a fan clutch issue what the hell is popping up on my phone everybody in nerd-off everybody and their brother has been calling since I've been in the shop and my phone doesn't work in the shop so that time of the year I mean the money that the desired and I mean you got to really get this thing high you know obviously if he's driving it to 300 miles it's obviously is that the injectors are getting heat soaked and one of them is probably leaking by just enough to tow the code I know that from reading about this 1222 1223 code and all the forums and stuff the guys that have been having problems with them ever since you know the easiest way cuz it runs fine it doesn't there's no starting issues nothing like that but what it does when it does that those are in the limp mode and the goal plug-in not the intake heater grid the grid eater a little curlicue light on the dash starts flashing and puts him in the lamp mode so anyway it's just just a pain in the ass he clears the code he's he's good to go for a little while again but he's sick of dealing with it so he just wants it fixed we're gonna do our damnedest to do it we're going to test it correctly the best way that we can this is a straight Cummins procedure I looked it up they used to come and use to do these tests and idle and see that's the same thing I found on John beers the 10-ton idle test doesn't really give you a it's not a very good test the better test is to ramp that RPM up and get that rail pressure up there like 20,000 psi that's when you know it's gonna leak because you know just sitting around idling that that codes not gonna pop up it's gonna be code it's gonna come up when you're going down the road so some of these tests that these manufacturers put out in the service literature I hate to say it's usually up to mechanic to figure out the way a better way to do it because he knows that [ __ ] ain't gonna work you know you're not replicating the conditions in which the code was set so I don't I don't understand some of their tests you know I like that 178 30 video I did a while back where I had an injector that was giving me problems and throwing a code and the only time that son of a [ __ ] would though that code is when they were pulling a heavy load disking up the hill and this is kind of the same thing is what it is and that's the same thing that thing would do it would D rate yeah when that code in flash you know so anyway that's what we got to do here we got to figure this problem out I am gonna drive this thing out to like MTA which is about 15 miles about a 30 mile round-trip I want it nice and hot which is really lovely to work on but it's the only way we can really test it effectively I think and I'm gonna get back pull it in the driveway leave it I'll until I get all my tools ready to go that way I keep my temperature you know on my engine and my fuel system it stays at a pretty good hot you know temperature and then pull that line off put the fitting in put the hoses on get into the scanner and be ready to be ready to do the test so anyways stay tuned alright guys the curlicue light came on and she went thing ding ding and she's through the 12:22 code I'm gonna turn around I do work for these guys in real Austin law here's back it's good meat you know I don't know the 12:22 it doesn't really feel like it no yeah I think it didn't II rated the 1222 did doesn't seem like it's got the get-up-and-go that it did have I was gonna stop there and clear the code but I knew bill was right behind me and then I'd have to sit there and talk to him for half an hour I'll get up here somewhere all over clear the cove I'll just I'll just do it when I get back I got an idea I wonder if I can monitor rail pressure while now that it's good and hard my monitor rail pressure well it's good and hot control the fuel control actuator myself the duty cycle and make the rail pressure go up I think and I can I wonder if I can notice my rail pressure dropping off I don't think it's enough to really notice a drastic difference they've got the program to wear it so so sensitive that it doesn't take much to set it off this gal here I had some [ __ ] make a comment on there Kevin hey Kevin G go [ __ ] yourself he was saying that I left my dogs unattended somewhere where he lives and dogs are getting caught the other side stairs he said tell them to go through their place if they're gonna drive like idiots you know so we're letting them go through there is a favor and trying to be nice you know and then they run your [ __ ] dog over and then some [ __ ] on YouTube tells me it is my fault [ __ ] you partner anyways that I don't usually call people out but when they called me out on that I'm gonna say something you kiss my ass all right guys something I'm just now noticing we have a fuel rail pressure problem for certain ok let's go into this I'll show you something on the fuel pressure override test it's supposed to ramp your speed up to 1200 rpm and 20,000 psi and it won't achieve 20,000 19300 it'll never reach 20,000 definitely have a problem here now I wonder if I need to clear this code first now we're down to 18,000 psi no we got a leak we got injectors leaking to return somewhere on it most definitely it gets worse and worse so let's see here I want to see what was I gonna do let's clear the code and then try it I don't think it's gonna make any difference [Music] cleared the code no curlicue light on on the dash let's go back to system check let's go back to fuel pressure override test should rant this psi up to 20,000 now it's falling off I mean it's 1,500 psi less than what it should be 18 5 let's do the return flow test and see how much leakage we got leave a running running we're just gonna let it idle here for a minute this one's our injectors this one over here is our DP 3 pump so where is my water bottle I'm just kind of curious won't let it do this I'm gonna go ahead and do the override test with it in the bucket [Applause] want to watch this one line RIT [ __ ] thing quite a bit of fuel from now that look at that's way too much I guarantee that's way too much [Music] in time doubt all right let's get a water bottle let's do our task here we go that's here you override test feel pressure override dance okay [Music] as soon as that thing go to idle back down see how we're not even maintaining real pressure and it was worse when I had the engine or more took me so damn long to get that fitting on there get timed out just gonna let it idle guarantee you that's more than 240 milliliters Wow it's pretty bad it's pretty bad I can tell you that right now huh I can't believe that thing even starts I mean that's 1 liter and it filled that [ __ ] half full there's like 500 milliliters in there I would say all 6 injectors need to be changed but what I can't believe is it's is that it's starting most of time when they get really bad like that they won't start but this one's returning so much fuel these are 100 milliliter those are 100 milliliter jars there's there's 100 [ __ ] jug is hot I can't I can't hold on to the Sun bitching me in a rag here the old feels a little wee bit hot lady 200 milliliters there's no sensing even we can do it though but if for the sake of the video we know what we have to do that all the injectors need to be changed 300 milliliters there's probably gonna be I'm just guessing probably [ __ ] me man early where's the little ones even going to the line it's play over anyway there's 400 milliliters more so I don't know I got one jug left there's probably at least another two of these is probably that's crazy man that's looking crazy I'm gonna do it one more time just make sure I'm doing this right make sure I'm on the right one this is my injectors than right here that's my injector make sure I'm not on the cp3 hey that's my injector one bill pressure override test okay [Music] yeah oh yeah I mean it filling a second half full [Applause] all right well that's pretty good test I mean if we know we got to do we got to get him six brand new injectors stick in this thing all right then we need to figure out what's wrong with his air conditioner
