first christians observed with great devotion the days of our lord's passion and resurrection and it became the custom of the church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting this season of lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for holy baptism it was also a time when those who because of notorious sins had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness and restored to the fellowship of the church thereby the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the gospel of our savior and of the need which all christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith i invite you therefore in the name of the church to the observance of a holy lent by self-examination and repentance by prayer fasting and self-denial and by reading and meditating on god's holy word and to make a right beginning of repentance and as a mark of our mortal nature let us now kneel before the lord our maker and redeemer most holy and merciful god we confess to you and to one another and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth that we have sinned by our own by what we have done and by what we have left [Music] on we have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves we have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven we confess to you mercy on us we have been deaf to your call to serve as christ served us we have not been true to the mind of christ we have grieved your holy spirit have mercy on all us past unfaithfulness the bright hypocrisy and impatience of our lives [Music] our self-indulgent appetites and ways and our exploitation of other people we confess [Music] our anger and our own frustration and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves we confess to you have mercy on us [Music] our intended love of worldly goods and comforts and or dishonesty in daily life and work we confess to you us [Music] our negligence in prayer and worship and our failure to commend the faith that is in us we confess to accept our repentance lord for the wrongs we have done [Music] for our blindness to human need and suffering and our indifference to enjoy us and cruelty have mercy on [Music] false us for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbor and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who give have mercy on us [Music] for our waste and pollution of your creation and our lack of concern for those who come after us have mercy on us [Music] restore us good lord and let your anger depart from [Music] is great accomplish in us the work of your salvation that we may show forth your glory in the world by the cross and passion of your our son bring us with your saints will the joy of [Music] resurrection [Music] is [Music] almighty god the father of our lord jesus christ who desires not the death of sinners but rather that they may turn from their wickedness and live has given power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people being penitent the absolution and remission of their sins he pardons and absolves all those who truly repent and with sincere hearts believe his holy gospel therefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his holy spirit that those things may please him which we do on this day and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy through jesus christ our lord amen the lord be with you and also with you let us pray almighty god whose blessed son was led by the spirit to be tempted by satan come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations and as you know the weaknesses of each of us let each one find you mighty to save through jesus christ your son our lord who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god now and forever amen a reading from the book of genesis god said to noah and to his sons with him as for me i am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that is with you the birds the domestic animals and every animal of the earth with you as many as came out of the ark i establish my covenant with you that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth god said this is the sign of the covenant that i make between me and you and every living creature that is with you for all future generations i have set my bow in the clouds and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth when i bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds i will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh and the water shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh when the bow is in the clouds i will see it and remember the ever everlasting covenant between god and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth god said to noah this is the sign of the covenant that i have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] oh lord i lift up my soul my god i put my trust in you let me not be humiliated nor let my enemies try over me let none who look to you be put to shame let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes show me your ways o lord and teach me your power lead me in your truth and teach me for you are the god of my salvation in you have i trusted all the day long remember o lord your compassion and love for they are from everlasting remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness o and our lord is the lord therefore he teaches sinners in his ways he guides the humble doing right and teaches his way to the lowly a reading from the first letter of peter christ also suffered for sins once for all the righteous for the unrighteous in order to bring you to god he was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison who in former times did not obey when god waited patiently in the days of noah during the building of the ark in which a few that is eight persons were saved through water and baptism which this prefigured now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to god for a good conscience through the resurrection of jesus christ who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of god with angels authorities and powers made subject to him the word of the lord r [Music] calls me from [Music] my [Music] is [Music] me [Music] sweet [Music] sweet [Music] he blessed [Music] his friends [Music] is and wait for gloria after jesus was baptized he was led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil he fasted 40 days and 40 nights and afterwards he was famished the tempter came and said to him if you are the son of god command these stones to become loaves of bread but he answered it is written one does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of god then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple saying to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down for it is written he will command his angels concerning you and on their hands they will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone jesus said to him again it is written do not put the lord your god to the test again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their splendor and he said to him all these i will give you if you will fall down and worship me jesus said to him away with you satan for it is written worship the lord your god and serve only him then the devil left him and suddenly angels came and waited on him the gospel of the lord praise to you lord christ [Music] i greet you in the precious name of jesus who is the christ greetings to also bishop marianne budd to dean randy hollerath reverend cannon leonard l hamlin reverend cannon kelly brown douglas the national cathedral leadership and family and the international family of friends of the national cathedral i consider it an esteemed honor to be invited back to join you again let us pray jesus for you by you of you through you and you alone in jesus name amen our text comes from our readings today that is psalm 25 the first five verses in you o lord my god i put my trust i trust you do not let me put to be put to shame nor let my enemies triumph over me no one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame but shame will overcome will come on those who are treacherous without cause show me your ways lord teach me your paths guide me in your truth and teach me for you our god my savior and then our text comes from the very last verse of that psalm verse 22 verse 22 deliver israel oh god from all their troubles and our theme and thought of meditation is yes and yes again how many times did you say yes to god today wait don't rush the answer just let the question sit there for a moment how many times did you say yes to god today truth is for many of us on too many occasions the kingdom of me gets in the way of the kingdom of god we choose my way my point of view it is my inability to say no to me that gets in the way of me saying yes to god it's my agenda it's my way it's my policy it's my thoughts over the one whose ways are not our ways and who thoughts are not like our thoughts when you check in with god before you check your cell phone that was a yes when you meditated on god's word before you posted on social media that's a yes when you felt the presence of the lord and didn't rush the moment that's a yes when you said yes to the promises of god the ones that sound so ridiculous and defy common sense that's a yes when you said yes to new mercies this morning because you ran out of mercies that god gave you yesterday that's a yes and when you said yes to the forgiveness of sins the ones that so easily beset us that say yes when you said yes to god's potential and possibilities instead of the proclivities of your own insecurities that was a yes when you turn towards the people and things that are life-giving instead of life training that's a yes lord it's like that praise song we we sang when we were we're growing up i'll say yes lord yes to your will and to your way i'll say yes lord yes i will trust you and obey when the spirit speaks to me with my whole heart i'll agree and my answer will be yes lord yes ah all you have to do is open your mouth and say yes why don't we practice it now come on center yourself take a deep breath breathe deeper now breathe one more time in a quiet way just say yes it's all right to throw back your head and say yes tell god yes say a yes that comes all the way from your gut and agrees with your heart and gains affirmation with your mind yes it's easy to say yes because god has already demonstrated what god knows what is best for us we exit the kingdom of me when we say yes to the kingdom of god when we trust that god has our best interests at heart woodrow crowe writes the god who knows you best knows the best for you it's easy to say yes to the lord who is already demonstrated in clear and concise ways that this sovereign can be trusted when you say yes you recognize that god is the sovereign ruler of the universe when we say yes we acknowledge his right as the creator to reign over all of the earth we also recognize our responsibility to submit to him as our authority when you say yes we are saying that he is the rewarder of them who diligently seek him the lord loves us and has chosen the best path for our lives our yes flows easier when you believe that god is god and god can do just what god says he can do and you can do what god says you can do and you are whose god says you are and not whatever foolishness that culture and society believes that you are less than who god says you are and when god says yes to our yes did you hear what i said when god says yes to our yes god's yes becomes louder than the nose of culture and society god's yes you're fearfully and wonderfully made god's yes you are created in the image of god that counsels the culture melanin phobias when you say yes you're saying that god is in charge and control and god is sovereign and god can be trusted to do what is best and then you wait for god all of your days god's timing is all always perfect and but from our perspective sometimes it seems god is moving slow dragging his feet through our issues and if we focus on our circumstances and the advice of others we may be tempted to jump ahead of the lord come on isaiah help us here god acts on the behalf of one who waits for him and when we wait for the lord we're just not sitting around idle but we are being sensitive to uh to his directions we're listening for that still small voice that's behind us telling us which way to go before making any decision he knows all the facts of our lives and the perfect timing for every situation and so so then our yes ought to be an easy thing to do but think think think back for a moment you know those occasions on everyone's resume when you should have said yes and you didn't when you when you should have just nodded your head and you didn't you should have waved your hand or or slapped five or spoke up or took a chance you should have stretched out you should have moved ahead and the whole universe held his breath waiting for you to say yes and you didn't waiting for you to say something that would change the world change your world or change your life forever and somehow yes didn't come out of your lips just like in our reading this morning remember noah did say yes when god asked him to build the ark and that yes had consequences because every yes has a consequence noah had to build something that people had never seen for something they had never experienced noah built an ark inside of a community that had shunned the ways of god and whose stench of sin reached heaven high their world was about to shut down and the world had never shut down before with a flood of epic proportions that they had never seen this type of pandemic before no one saw it coming no one saw that it would be eight people quarantined for 40 days and 40 nights shelter in place with two of every kind of creature just like the psalmist in our texts that all noah could do was trust god noah's yes saved the water which prefigures the baptism as peter writes to us now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to god for good conscience through the resurrection of jesus christ who now sits at the right hand of the father with angels and authorities and powers made subject to him abraham said yes when god asked him to sacrifice his only son the one he had prayed and waited for joseph said yes when god asked him to forgive his brothers who had beaten him and sold him into slavery moses said yes when god told him to go to pharaoh and ask him to let the israelites go when there was still a warrant out for his arrest rahab said yes when asked to hide the israelite spies and risk her own lives and the lives of her family esther said yes when mordecai told her to go and invite it to the king to save her people daniel said yes when god told him not to bow down and worship other idols mary said yes when the angel told her she would carry the word made flesh the disciples said yes when jesus asked them to leave everything and to follow him jesus had enough yes in him to resist the devil in the wilderness yes we do not live by bread alone yes do not put the lord to the test yes worship the lord and him only jesus was god's yes to our humanity jesus was god's yes to us and that god would come and breathe and feel pain and shun the riches of glory and he would thirst and hunger and sweat and bleed and grow tired and feel loneliness and frustration jesus would face critics and haters and feel sadness and fear and rejection and friendship and love all of the things we know as human life is an amazing yes from the god we serve hallelujah paul said yes when god asked him to deliver the good news of jesus christ to the gentiles yeah and carla grassner writes i'm going to say yes to what god wants me to do and not to what others think i should do shonda rhimes television writer and producer extraordinaire writes about a one-year experiment she would say yes to all of the things that scared her made her nervous took her out of her comfort zone for one year she would grab fear by the throat and all of the things that say you don't deserve you don't belong you're not enough and she uncovered a new confidence um the power of yes can change the world can change your world our world and change your life we are the united states and we are so divided yes we are a nation huddled masses yearning to breathe free yes and at the same time a nation that supports violent racist misogynist rhetoric and actions yes we are the land of the free of the home of the brave yes and we are a nation that applauds trash talk and name tall name calling and violent uncivil discourse yes we are a nation of diverse races and religious and ethnic origins seeking in close inclusivity in america yes that rings with the harmony of liberty yes and a nation with an ugly undercurrent of anger fear and hate yes with liberty and justice for all sometimes we're almost sometimes an ideal that fails upon praxis let me exegete the text it's yes that brings us to our our texts in psalm 25. here the psalmist is facing his own pandemic it is a crisis it is unnerving it shakes him to his core and shakes up the status quo we like it when things are stable go ahead raise your hand and say amen we like it when it's secure and safe not just safe in the arms of jesus but safe in our own neighborhood when when when things are unsafe we close our doors and we close our minds we shatter our hearts and shut down our compassions when things are out of control we either try to control everything around us or get lost in its mania panic stalks us when the structure of our lives break down the structure of familiar relationship the structures of public health the structures of finance the structures of democracy the structure of love my neighbor as myself the structure of humanity we're all fearfully and wonderfully made remember that even if i don't look like you or you look like me red and yellow black and white we are all precious in his sight the structure of truth that can set us free and truth still sets free for how can you say you love god whom you haven't seen and hate me who you do see what truth you do not control the resurrection or its results ah you do not decide who gets in after you have gotten in you don't have a right to dictate who gets saved or who else is a part of the whosoever yet it is at this intersection of of crises internal and external where we find the lord's opportunity looming just beyond our front doors have you ever cried out to the lord like david does in this psalm david the attributed author here i am lord i i lift up my soul not not just my mind not just my body not just my heart but i lift up my soul to you all hell has broken loose on the outside in my neighborhood in my home at work in the world everything has gone crazy on the inside of me all i can do is trust you lord don't let my enemies win triumphant over maybe triumphal for me no one who waits upon the lord should be a say a shame but let those who deal treacherously without cause be ashamed oh oh listen listen to david as he sings his song this morning let not my enemies win don't let them rejoice over my demise don't let them rejoice over me laugh at me could it be that david didn't want to have to defend god because every time something goes wrong and something doesn't go according to plan what do they say where is your god now where where is god now david is god answering your prayers how long have you prayed that prayer and god hasn't moved in your life maybe david is now afraid to pray prayers because they won't be answered maybe because god is not moving in the direction that you think god ought to be moving or is moving too slow and the answers are delayed how do i explain god's silence at a time like this here david is experiencing a crisis of faith and when we forget that god's ways are not our ways and thoughts are not like our thoughts or or that maybe some sin is lurking in the shadows of our lives and standing in the way david sings this song that it should be my enemies who will be ashamed especially those who deal treacherously without cause or or meaning or who act deceitfully without a cause who actions are deceitful wait for it without cause are the ones who should be put to shame is it possible at the intersection of crises and opportunity ah that that this is david's home coming uh remember david saying with confidence in psalm 24 23 the lord is my shepherd he declared with confidence in psalm 24 lift up your heads oh ye gates of the king of glory shall come in the heart this is the confident david but when faced with enemies without an enemies within that upsets his apple carted rocks his boat and rattles him in psalm 25 it is with a fresh opportunity that he becomes again acquainted with the god who is and the god who can do and and david has an opportunity to say yes again to god and so now now david after having lifted up his soul ask god to do three things three four things he says lord show teach and lead is this the pathway of true discipleship that engages the whole person lord show me make known yourself to me as moses prays now therefore if i found grace in your sight now show me your way that i may know you god's ways are revealed in god's word surely in the gospel yes and in order to receive true repentance uh that i will turn away from this ye repentance and forgiveness lord forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who mess with us the gift of salvation as god's ways are fulfilled for us in christ jesus who is the way the truth and the light then the taught one rises later in psalm 51 to teach others i will teach transgressors your way show me and i will show others teach me your paths and then lead me in your way you know the hem we sing lead me guide me along the way oh that you lead me i will not stray jesus who is the way shows the way to his disciples and us when he sent out the twelve and said you go preach saying the kingdom of god is at hand heal the sick cleanse the lepers raise the dead and cast out demons freely you have received freely you give jesus tells them to do what he did so it is enough says jesus for a disciple to be like his teacher david says march me to the truth and march me in the truth because to believe god's word is not enough to think god's word is not enough to know god's word is not enough we must do god's will we must do god's word and what do you require of us lord that you do justice and love mercy and walk humbly before the lord come here isaiah what are we to do do god's word if you get rid of un uh unfair practices quit blaming victims quit gossiping about other people's sin if you are generous with the hungry and start giving yourselves to the down and out your lives will begin to glow in darkness your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight i will always show you where to go i'll give you a full life in the emptiest of places that's that's not vashta that's bible that's bible this is the part where we say yes and we say yes again and so now now david is at his yes again moment are you yes is never one and done each of us may have to say yes at every red sea we must cross and every generation must cross its own red sea to flee the pharaohs of their own time to get to the other side of atrocity crises sent him into the face of god and crises should always send us into the face of god he lifted up his soul and declares lord all i can do now is trust you this is the intersection of crises and opportunity and david chose opportunity show me then teach me and finally lead me you are the god of my salvation i will wait all day for you david is attentive yes he is he's open he's not running away he's expected he is available he is not wallowing in the christian moment he lifts up his soul he is ready he's on ready before god show teach guide the psalmist sing now all of the ways of the lord are loving and faithful go ahead read down through that psalm yes again my eyes are ever on the lord who alone can release my feet from the snares go ahead keep reading yes again relieve the troubles of my heart free me from anxious yes again look at my afflictions and take away my sins there are many yes again guide my life and rescue me yes again and may integrity and of whiteness protect me because my hope lord is in you and david ends this song ends this song in our text deliver israel oh god from all her troubles what huh here the psalmist is not singing a prayer for himself but he's also singing a song for his nation yes again deliver israel from all of her troubles and so in the 21st century i say yes again deliver this nation oh god from all of her troubles i deliver oh god this nation from a triple pandemic a global health pandemic economic pandemic a racial injustice pandemic inequity pandemic 489 000 plus people have died from a disease that is stealing our breath so 489 000 plus families have been impacted 861 000 plus unemployment claims uh one in five children in america live in poverty which elevates a child's risk of behavior social and emotional emotional health risk and reduces skill building opportunities and academic outcomes 4.3 million victims of human trafficking deliver oh lord this nation from all of our her troubles shooting on our men and women in the street in their homes and in the church open season for violence on black and brown bodies in the street at the home in the church of this uh-huh black history sunday deliver god this nation from her troubles deliver us oh god this nation from the enemies of freedom that daily breathe down our necks and put their knees on the necks of voter voters rights and civil rights deliver this nation oh god from those who are trying to dismantle american democracy deliver also guard this nation from her trouble so that we can do the heavy lifting to engage the problems that plague our community change the course of divisive leadership blind loyalty and demagoguery deliver oh god this nation from her troubles so we can put compassion back in the budget so that our children and their children after them will be able to breathe fresh air drink uncontaminated water eat healthy food not subject to a melting ice cap rising sea water dust storms wildfire a depleted water table so we will not become invite environmental refugees in our own country yes and yes again the leader the leader in in this psalm 25 is now ready to be led by the lord are you are you david found his way back to the face of god and so must we and and we must lift up our souls to the lord not just our heart minds but our souls there are external enemies internal enemies that plague our hearts and our households and our neighborhood yes again you are the god of our salvation and we trust in you just like the psalmist says only you can deliver our feet from the snares of the enemy because the lord is my shepherd mess that should have happened didn't and things that should have fallen apart are still working come on say yes again people who should be dead are still alive accidents that should have maimed you merely roughed you up stuff that should have stressed you out strengthen your devices that should have destroyed you or fortified you can't you say yes again to god mind games that should have messed you up built you up trap set became traps revealed in the nick of time conspiracies failed the gallows built for you someone else was hung on manias that should have incapacitated to you led you to led to your heal and look what the lord has done the lord has been good to us and we are glad yes again weaknesses that should have been a disadvantage became an asset difficulties uh that should have derailed you became strong points you know the stuff i'm talking about the things of god which are hard to explain but our experience yes you may not be able to explain the grace of god but don't you love it when you experience the grace and when grace shows up but you may not be able to explain how favor works but aren't you glad when the lord favors you you cannot explain why the lord forgives the unforgivable but you're sure glad that the lord forgives you you can't explain how the lord knows when to show up in your life but you're glad when he does all you know it's just like your grandmother said he'll make a way somehow all you know is that the lord still can help at helping time all you know is that the lord will hide you when you need to be hidden from your enemies they may write you down with their bitter twisted lies says another poet amaya angelou and still arise all you know is that on your resume are some me too moments but because god love so loved you better that moment does not define you nor determines your future all you know when something that should have killed you god kept you here comes another poet andre lord come celebrate with me she sings that what tried to kill me failed can't explain abundant life but you know jesus died so that you could live it you can't explain why the lord loves you but you know the lord loves you enough to die for you fight through hell to get to you and rose from the grave to give you eternal life yes and yes you can sings unto the poet howard thurman keep before me the moments of my high resolve say yes the lord wants to take you places you have never been before yes show you things you've never seen before yes tell you things even the deep things of god ha yes the lord wants to work with you yes in you and through you yes how the lord wants to open doors for you yes guide you into places that are right for planting the seeds of gospel so you stop wasting time on unresolved people and eating eating unripened fruit here's another contemporary psalmist and poet how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us writes amanda gorman in her inaugural poem we we will not march back to what was but move to what shall be a country that is bruised but whole benevolent but bold fierce and free we will not be turned around or interpreted by uh interrupted by uh intimidation she says this poet because we know are in action and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation our blunders will become their burdens but one thing is certain if we merge mercy with might and might with love she writes with might then love becomes our legacy and changes their birthright yes and yes again deliver this nation o god out of her troubles hey listen come on amanda we will sing the lot we will see the light if we are brave enough to see it come on bible jesus is the light of the world and david our psalmist of the hour sings in you oh lord i put my trust and let the church say amen yes and say amen again yes again amen [Music] oh love our god how strong and true [Music] uncomprehended and unborn [Music] beyond all knowledge and all o wide embracing wondrous [Music] below we read the best in [Music] of shame [Music] [Music] all life would dwell our death we read thy part would bless and save darkness of the grave still more in resurrection we read the fallenness of thy mind [Music] [Music] let us affirm our faith in the words of the nicene creed we believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen we believe in one lord jesus christ the only son of god eternally begotten of the father god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made of one being with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven by the power of the holy spirit he became incarnate from the virgin mary and was made man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried on the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end we believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son with the father and the son he is worshiped and glorified he has spoken through the prophets we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen amen the peace of the lord be always with you and also with you once again welcome and thank you for joining us for worship today i'm so grateful for to bishop mackenzie for bringing us the word this morning and i'm so grateful to all of you for being with us and i want to say thank you to all of you out there who have been supporting the cathedral over these many months it means the world to us and ensures that our ministry and these services and our programs can continue if you're able to share some of what you have with the cathedral we would be most fortunate many people think we're supported by the federal government or by some national church body but we are not every dollar that we receive for the mission and ministry of this cathedral comes from private donation from folks just like you so please first support your own church or religious community and then if you're able to support the cathedral we would be most most grateful we have been blessed by so many of you over these months and i cannot tell you how thankful we are for your generosity now walk in love as christ loved us and gave himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to god [Music] turn thee to me [Music] [Music] [Music] distressed [Music] great great of a song of my you the god and father of all he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself an obedience to your will a perfect sacrifice for the whole world on the night he was handed over to suffering and death our lord jesus christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said take eat this is my body which is given for you do this for the remembrance of me after supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks he gave it to them and said drink this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and
