hey welcome to downshift my name is Matt and this is the Lexus NX 350 Hybrid and it's kind of like a Porsche GTS product not in the sense of being fast or sporty but in the sense that this is kind of The Sweet Spot there's four different powertrains that you can get in your NX and the 350 normal hybrid I think is probably the best one Paulo what do you think I agree if you're not if you're not completely sold on the F Sport body styling that you get I think that this is the best bang for your buck so what we're going to do is show you everything that you need to know about the NX 350 Hybrid so the first thing we have to talk about is what is this thing well it's their compact crossover so it's smaller than the RX and it's bigger than the ux remember they make a ux I forgot but it's also sharing a lot of its componentry with the Toyota Rav 4 it has the same wheelbase as the Rav 4 but it's actually an inch or a couple inches longer so this is kind of like a RIT up Rav 4 but what's under the hood then is what makes this thing special what we have here is one of four different powertrain options this is the normal hybrid it's the only normal hybrid that you can get in this segment and it's a 2.5 L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder but you get three electric motors and a battery under 2 Kow so no plugin Lexus says it has 239 horsepower but they do not say a torque number uh has an ecvt on demand all all-wheel drive so it's front bias and fuel economy they say 38 we've been getting about 36 lots of Highway yeah 36 to 38 so that's pretty accurate and that's pretty efficient I'd say and we touched on it but this like I said is the only normal hybrid if you go to Germany the Audi the BMW the Mercedes they're all 48volt mild hybrids or you can go to something like the alpha tanali that we were in last week which is a plug-in hybrid you can get a plug-in hybrid here but this the NX is the only way that you can just get a normal run-of-the-mill hybrid it's also the most efficient now with something like the 350h they didn't they didn't try to make it something that it's not they didn't try to make it too sporty and it's the fact that they go so far as to not even offer an f- sport performance or an f-s sport body kit there's no adaptive dampers on this one because 350h is just about maximizing fuel economy and maximizing your luxurious experience and speaking of luxuries this thing on the interior is really where it shows its Lexus this versus the alpha tonali that we were in last week which is a competitor to this it's not especially when you look in the interior this is a full step and a half above the leather work here is exquisite on the door you have real genuine open Poe wood love me some open pore wood and then you just have great and luxurious materials Paulo loves the kind of tan conac saddle Brown whatever you want to call it it looks gorgeous it's fantastic but you've got heated seats you've got cooled seats they even have like an autoclimate concierge thing going on you've got heated steering wheel and for the extra ,000 you can get heated rear seats hello and you can also option I believe it's $500 a panoramic sunroof and the next thing I want to talk about is the glitz and the Glam specifically on the door CS check this out your kick plates here are a brushed aluminum or brushed nickel but not only that that's normal this is lit up the outline of the Lexus there I've I never see that I don't see that on Mercedes maybe you see it in like a Bentley in a Rolls I imagine you would but you also get it back here so aluminum Sills for your trunk and also lit up look at that Lexus not just Lexus but Lexus NX this was the one that really got me that I just thought this was a very nice touch that they did here yes very nice you're not seeing this in the alpha no but let's talk about the trunk space itself now like I said this thing is a couple inches longer than a Rav 4 but you get to the trunk and you got 23 cubic feet of space which is actually smaller than the Rav 4 how much is in the Rav 4 37 37 cubic feet of space now you can drop these rear seats and you know how I said you can get heated rear seats well you can drop them automatically from the trunk that's part of the same package that same $1,000 that gets you the heated rear seats but with the seats down what are we looking at 44 yep which is still smaller than the Rav 4 but then since we mentioned them check out the back seats now again I'm 61 these seats actually do recline a little bit they do manually not like the power adjustments from the trunk but look at this I've got knee room for days I even have Headroom with my nub and that's fantastic the leather work again fantastic and the fact that you have heated rear seats back here awesome climate Vents and some USB C's down there along with a normal 12vt but now we're outside of the car I want to talk about the door handle now that looked pretty normal didn't it well it's not actually like a normal door handle it's a digital door handle so this doesn't actually move there's a button on the inside that you push to release the door electronically you get in sit down close the door and that is how you open the door you have to push this in and then push it both of our wives had had a little more trouble than I think was probably needed to figure out how to open the door yeah more than we'd like to care to admit but yeah you just push this while you're pushing it in you open the door but if this ever dies you do have a mechanical fail safe you can pull this way there and then I want to talk about some of the tech things going on here starting right here you got your fully digital instrument cluster which is great but you go to shift into your Eco or sport mode doesn't really do much of anything so you have a digital instrument cluster don't really I feel like it could do more more but then you have a head-up display which is pretty good and it actually works with this which we'll talk about more later but then moving here this is a 7-in screen this is double that this is 14 in of screen and it's pretty good it's Toyota system that we've seen unveiled ever since their Tundra came out so you've got things like Wireless Apple carplay wireless Android auto you've got over theair updates dual Bluetooth connection you still have 360 cameras you don't have the like augmented reality thing like you get in a BMW but it's a pretty good camera what you also have though is the silly egg view which has never helped anyone in their entire life but at least you can go in here and change the color of your car or to not match your car which is what I've just done but then I have to go back here and now I have an orange NX which is helpful right it it's so lame it's not not helpful uh anything I forgot the rear view camera or I guess rear view mirror can be digital digital fun thing about this we were just doing a video on the AMG G63 4x4 squared that was the first car to ever get a digital rearview mirror from Mercedes Lexus has been doing this even Toyota's been doing this for a number of years so they are ahead of the curve I prefer to do that actually sometimes um especially like at night or if you have anything in the back or people in the back it's just nice to do that the other thing is ambient lighting you really only get it right under underneath there on both doors it's very basic but at least I guess you have something yeah now I want to talk about the look of this car because I think and I know that you think it looks good for me though the red is not it the blue from the plug-in that we had that was it Chief debate I I I'm usually not a fan of red but I just think that this looks it looks so elegant like the lines of the car I know the grill is like that's kind of a point of contention some people think it's like spindle Grill I like it look good here I think it looks really good I think it's really elegant and I I usually am not a fan of red again but I think it looks really really good here it's instantly iconic as Lexus it's got the spindle Grill it's got the very sharp check with the triple Beams I love that it's just it's a very cherry red I'd like a deeper Mero perhaps but anyway we come around the side we've got upgraded Wheels here multi-spoke we've got some Chrome accenting here very luxury and then you were talking earlier about the body lines you can really hard crease all the way way down here and then it just wies out really nice I like it a lot actually and then we come around the back and it's very classic Lexus here you get full width tail bar but they have an overlapping thing which is very nice and this was actually the first Lexus to get the script spelled out on the back tailgate and of course you get a little rubber bumper thing next to your trunk there's like and no exhaust I think it's one of the best SUV cuvs looking little lookwise and another thing that I really love for some reason is that there's no little bump where the rear bumper is it's just flat I don't know why I really like that but I just think it's looks really good well you get something like a Nissan Pathfinder that has like football F yeah that looks like a whale or something I don't know why that's relevant it is then we're back inside because I want to talk about the safety features now your autopilot stuff is all here but you'll notice this is blank well it's because it's touch sensitive and it shows up in your head-up display so you can turn your adaptive cruise on you can set your following distance and all sorts of stuff here and it works pretty well it changes lanes for you right yes if it's um if you have all the correct settings on and you just hit your little blinker you got to make sure that you keep your hands on the steering wheel of course yeah but it'll Auto change names which I thought was pretty cool yeah it works really well you've also got incredibly bright headlights which is very good and you've got the little proximity or turn headlights as well to give you some added uh safety and we just talked about this you do have touch sensitive buttons here but if you just go to skip song and push it here it doesn't always register right away so sometimes to skip song you have to press this twice and that's kind of annoying to you also experienced this did you also say that if you click this it kind of changes what the functionality of the buttons do so like here you can move the dis you can decide where your heads up display is and uh what's on your digital dash here then if you click it again it goes into the cruise controls and same thing with the left side I think if you click it again it goes into like talk to text or talk to call features yep and then you can skip songs so it's kind of cool that Lexus integrated that and you do have a nice wireless charger here it works pretty well phone stays here as long as you're not driving recklessly but look at this hidden compartment it's not hashtag hidden compartment like it is in the Prius but you do have a hidden compartment and then speaking of compartments center console opens both ways and it comes with a red bck to match the color of the exterior and last thing we'll talk about is the price now an NX 350h starts at $45,000 but as tested this thing is optioned all the way up to $58,000 so approaching 60 Grand is it worth it we're going to discuss behind the wheel sport mode in the Lexus Hybrid sport mode Eng cage oh little wheel spin traction and then and then a Hoover sound vacuum sound um but yeah I mean it's like it's Lexus right and that's what I think this thing does so well is it's very self-aware about what it is it is a Lexus compact SUV hybrid and I think it shines as that it is not fast no yeah I think overall I loved loved this thing for the week but talking about the powertrain the good thing is they have a bunch of different options to choose from but the one that we have specifically I think I just wish it had a bit more pep a bit more power it's very it does like 240 is horsepower I don't know what the torque figure is they don't say they don't share that but it's not like fast but to me the thing that I love about it is the fact that we've been getting you know mid you could get up to like you 33 33 to 38 I think is probably what you're going to experience which I think is pretty good there was only one time I was getting on the highway with that I wished I had a bit more juice a bit more power yeah but if that's the case just go with the 450 hybrid so yeah and to me like this thing is just so very Lexus when we're flick back into eco mode now it's like it's so smooth the handoff between hybrid and gas or electric and gas is so smooth the steering is effortless it's so isolated the leather is so nice like we were in the tanali and I hate to do this I hate to throw it out under the bus again but we were in the tal catching asay again last week because it's the thing that we had last week and like it's a competitor to this thing and it just this is a whole tier above in terms of like the interior luxury experience would you agree I totally agree I think where Lexus had its biggest like Pitfall or or struggle with the weakest look of the chain was the tech pack that they offered now that they have you know the 14-in screen and the um the software that comes with it that they first introduced in the tundra which we mentioned earlier like it is just so good I love how they integrated some of the um climate control features into the the touchcreen I think that that's really cool they have all the things that like you need right here um again Matt kind of mentioned it but like it's just such a comfortable ride it's so subtle it does a good job of like blocking out the exterior noise it rides really well it's it's like a good road trip car I would say yeah the the adaptive cruise and autopilot stuff is awesome so riding on the highway it's just comfy I can have my heated and cooled seat on I can have it on auto climate concierge so it'll just take care of me it's like a butler in the car it's awesome I mean I really I genuinely do love this thing if you want something that's comfortable that's going to get you from point A to B in style and class and comfort this this is definitely it it does not miss I I love this thing I think that is a good place to end at though totally I'm getting a contact high dude it looks so good dude okay you're good three so such a good car dude heated rear seats hello yes I got to get the IP address right what kind of computer hack is that I know he's he's in it sure tell I could tell there's a type definitely is a type doors sometimes they're hard
