is the updated Honda CRV the best new compact SUV that you can buy that's what we're gonna find out welcome to Carl corner where we help you the consumer Master the process at car buying and Corner ship the Honda CRV is one of the best selling compact SUVs in North America and there are many reasons for that there are a lot of important things that the CRV does extremely well and also one major thing that it doesn't do so well so we're going to get into all the different pros and cons see whether it makes more sense to go with the regular gas engine or the hybrid version and find out how the CRV Compares against other similar SUVs in its price range but before we get into it remember if you enjoy and get value of this video make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so the Honda CRV was completely redesigned for 2023 but there have been some updates made for 2024 as well the CRV is available in six different trim levels in the US and five different trims in Canada you have three different trims for the regular gas engine and you you also have three trims for the hybrid in the US and two trims for the hybrid in Canada Honda has added a brand new sport L trim to the hybrid lineup which sits right in between the sport and the sport touring in terms of features and price the equivalent to this in Canada is the brand new EXL hybrid trim which sits right below the touring trim and this is a very important update because it has dropped the entry price of the hybrid by around three thousand dollars while still giving you most of the important features that you got on the touring now next to deciding which trim level to go for you also have to decide between the two different engines now as mentioned there are two different ones the standard engine is a 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes connected to a continuously variable transmission and a choice of either front wheel or all-wheel drive and then you have the hybrid which comes with a naturally aspirated 2-liter four-cylinder engine two electric motors with a hybrid battery pack and also a choice between front wheel or all-wheel Drive in the U.S or standard all-wheel drive in Canada now I'm going to make this Choice very easy for most of you between the two different engines the much better choice for most buyers is to go with the hybrid and I'm going to explain why firstly we have the most obvious benefit which is the fuel economy the hybrid is able to average around 40 miles per gallon or 6 liters per 100 kilometers which is really good for an SUV of the size whereas the regular 1.5 turbo engine is able to average between around 28 to 34 miles per gallon or 8 to 10 liters per 100 kilometers so you will save a lot of money on gas by going with the hybrid especially if most of your driving is stop and go City Driving where hybrids are the most efficient and the second reason is performance the 1.5 turbo engine produces around 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque which is pretty good but not quite as good as the hybrid because the hybrid has a larger 2-liter engine and also has the booster of two electric motors it produces 204 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque now in the real world there's really not a significant difference between the two in terms of how they feel both SUVs are able to get up to highway speed in a little under 8 seconds but it is really nice that you don't have to sacrifice any performance in order to get the fuel economy benefit of the hybrid the only real performance disadvantage with the hybrid is that it's only able to tow around a thousand pounds as opposed to 1500 pounds with the 1.5 turbo but there is one more really important reason why it makes more sense to go with the hybrid and that is reliability now the 1.5 turbo and the CVT that it comes attached with is certainly not a bad drivetrain at all but it does have some history of having issues particularly oil dilution which was a major issue in the past for a lot of owners thankfully Honda did improve this issue over time but it still can sometimes be a problem for those who do very short distance driving especially in cold weather which is an issue so in order to get the best reliability out of this engine it really is optimized for those who do mostly long distance highway driving and if you do mostly highway driving at least the highway fuel economy of this engine is really not that much worse than the hybrid so for that situation it does make sense but for every other type of buyer the hybrid is the much better one to go for because the hybrid has a simple naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine oil dilution and other mechanical issues over the long term are not going to be an issue and you not only get mechanical Simplicity in the form of not having a turbo but you also don't have a starter alternator or any belts because all those things are done by the second electric motor and arguably this hybrid system also doesn't even have a transmission instead you just have the two electric motors that work together with the gas engine which creates the same feeling and effect of a transmission it really is an amazing hybrid setup not only for its mechanical Simplicity its performance and fuel economy but it's also been in use in the Honda Accord since 2014 and since that time it's proven to be extremely reliable and trouble free but whether you go with the regular gas engine or the hybrid the CRV is going to be an excellent driving SUV it just gives you this really nice balance and combination between giving you really nice ride quality and also surprisingly good handling it's just a very easy SUV to drive and get along with and it also has excellent refinement in terms of its quietness and road noise and I also really like the fact that Honda has programmed this hybrid system to mimic the feeling of changing gears as you accelerate so it doesn't give you that typical ecvt feel that you get with some other hybrids but next to its driving feel the other major bonus that you get with the CRV is the interior space this is one of the largest and most spacious SUVs in the compact segment a lot more roomy than a lot of its Rivals and that really shows with the amount of Passenger space that you have in both the front and the rear seats and also a really good sized cargo area even with the rear seats up the regular CRV has nearly 40 cubic feet of space which is a lot more than you get from other SUVs the hybrid does have a bit less around 36 cubic feet because the Hybrid battery does take up a little bit of space underneath the floor but it is still very good and not only is this a very practical SUV but it's also extremely well designed and has excellent build quality the materials are excellent all the controls are extremely user friendly and don't take a lot of time to figure out you also have a well-designed infotainment system that's very user friendly and on the higher trims has Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto in terms of functionality of the controls this really is one of the better SUVs in the segment there's also a lot of storage space plenty of connectivity options in both the front and rear seats and you also get a lot of active safety features as standard as part of Honda sensing and not only does Honda give you a lot of active safety technology but the CRV has also rated a top safety pick by the iihs so it has a really good safety rating as well but even though the CRV does a lot of things extremely well there is certainly some room for improvement for one thing on the higher trims there are quite a few features missing that you would expect to see for example you don't get a surround view 360 camera which is a little bit unusual you also can't get ventilated front seats or a panoramic sunroof and those missing features are even more surprising because of the next major issue which is the pricing which is quite a bit higher than you might expect the CRV is priced from between 30 to 36 000 us for the regular gas engine or around 35 to 40 000 for the hybrid and in Canada the pricing is between 37 to 46 000 for the regular CRV and between 48 to 51 000 for the hybrid and there's no way around it that pricing makes the CRV a lot more offensive than some of its mean Rivals especially in Canada for example in Canada for the same price as a CRV hybrid you can actually get a Toyota RAV4 hybrid for around five to ten thousand dollars less depending on which trim level you compare it's nice that Honda tried to expand the CRV for 2024 by bringing in a cheaper trim level but they really need to go a lot further than that and really bring down that pricing with that being said the advertised price is one thing another thing is the real world situation which could be a whole lot different for example it's well known that a lot of other hybrids especially Toyota hybrids can have an extremely long waiting period sometimes over a year long and in the US you might be faced with significant dealer markups as well which does take away your savings and this is where the CRV can make a really compelling case for a lot of buyers not only does it seem to have better availability and not really faced with the same kind of dealer markups that you find with the other hybrid SUVs but you also won't have to wait as long for example in my location dealerships seem to have them in stock so if you need to have an SUV right away this is one of the top ones to go for but it's not just a good choice because of the better availability it's also a really well designed SUV and happens to be one of the best ones in the segment and as I touched on the CRV is also known for being extremely reliable long lasting and really not costing a lot of money when it comes to repairs and maintenance and because of that they're also known for holding their value extremely well over time which is an advantage that you don't get with every single competitor other similar SUVs that also give you a lot of the same benefits include the Toyota Venza and the Toyota RAV4 the Mazda CX-5 and cx50 and also the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback the Hyundai Tucson any Kia Sportage or the Sportage as it's known in the US are also sold as hybrids and they are really well designed Vehicles although arguably they don't have the same well-proven strong reputation for reliability that you get with the Honda and Toyota when it comes to making hybrids these two brands have really been doing it longer than anybody else and are the two safest ones to go for so even though I wish it were less expensive there's no arguing that the CRV is still a really good choice to go for in the near future I will be doing a comparison video between the updated CRV and the 2024 Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 but in the meantime let me know would you consider buying the Honda CRV let me know in the comments and if you enjoyed this video make
