2024 Box Office - Challengers Opening Weekend, Rebel Moon Part 2 & X-Men 97 Viewership aka Ratings

hello and welcome to this week's movie math where I pose to you an important and fascinating question especially because we don't have any money riding on it woohoo so is it a good idea to open Art House films whyde think carefully put your business hats on because this is as I said quite interesting so look at poor things it didn't go wide until its seventh week that might have been crazy like a fox though and even then it didn't go super wide the most screens the poor things ever played on was 2300 everything everywhere all at once that went wide on week three because it was I think more commercial in terms of you know had the Multiverse and martial arts aspect to it uh but it only went as big as a little over 2,000 theaters as well both movies carefully cultivated their critic media and audience access and therefore response to put each movie's best foot forward ah PR people they got a lot of plans you know there's a lot going on over there very interesting job uh you know because not all movies are launched the same which is exactly what we're talking about and both these films uh poor things and everywhere uh everything everywhere all at once went on to be both significant Awards winners as well as boasting Solid box office with poor things to be fair largely saved by the overseas Marketplace where's the overseas Marketplace for civil war we're going to talk about that now in 2024 Distributors are trying a different approach with Art House Fair Civil War opened on almost 4,000 screens and Challengers three and a half thousand screens sure both movies were able to open at number one very soft number ones uh but and so you have to wonder if they're moderate Bond box office gains are worth the tradeoff of being treated like you know they're they're being Tread Like mainstream films instead of ouse films and that that might be better than box office for this type of movie that's the big question we're posing here now their critic RT scores are lower as a result ah also you're going to see they both got hit with not great Cinema scores particularly Civil War and all these other movies they don't get Cinema scores cuz Cinema score does double back and they don't pull for limited releases so and because you know Cinema score Big Industry indicator so if you could Sid step that better for you you know it certainly didn't help Civil War and this is okay for Challengers but it would have been nice if it had an a like an A or an A minus to to combat this extremely low box office debut so the RT scores are lower and you know you have to wonder because of their mainstream style debuts do they not have the same cache now interestingly even more so the PLU thickens a24 went with the old school limited release approach for Love Lies bleeding which also Peak at around 2,000 screens but never caught on and even this weekend when it finally hit digital it's still hasn't been able to find an audience that movie couldn't even open on digital in the top 10 woo but it still has a much higher rotten Tomato's critic score than Civil War or challengers so we'll see if you know that helps Love Lies bleed when we get to award season right love lives bleeding might stick largely to the Indie Awards circuit we're talking Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards but it could really dominate there whereas Civil War and Challengers might not get more than one or two nominations I think I think they'll get one or two nominations but it would be really bad if they didn't get anything but you know this is what we're this is what we're taking a look at as these movies you know as their as their stories unfold now also there is some value in just being a calling card film like Katie O'Brien finally got an agent she just had a manager before and she landed at gers pretty solid uh and she's already signed on for the next mission of Possible movie so Katie O'Brien's totally clear of Love Lies bleeding that was a win for her however how about writer director Rose glass well glass will need some awards Noms to save her from delivering such bad box office but at least she has this very high Rotten Tomatoes critic score that she that her team can use to get her more work then as for Kristen Stewart this is a lot of mes at this point you know she's the star and stars are supposed to be able to move the needle in many different areas and it seems that Kristen Stewart cannot even at her most provocative that she couldn't get anybody to see this movie what are you paying her for what are you paying her for I mean at least again at least she's got the RT score to help her now let's move over to Challengers Mike fac oh he's good he just leveled up to William Morrison deor that's huge and his former agent transitioned to become his manager thank goodness it would be horrible for him to leave her because she's the one it it turns out uh they he fac and uh ok Conor were particularly doing a lot of interviews this past these past couple of days and fac revealed that it was this uh agent turn manager who insisted he read the Challenger script and consider doing the role and suddenly Hollywood and mainstream audiences are thinking of Josh o Conor is more than just young King Charles and that's incredibly valuable as well but Luca guadino you know the trades are trying to spin this as his biggest opening yet but oh my gosh like uh you know that's not a very that's not it's it's bad it's real bad I mean Challengers couldn't even match the debut of don't worry darling uh why would you hire Luca guadino after this debut he just did not I think it's a great movie but from a business perspective he's just not delivering he's not delivering a strong enough RT score and he's not delivering box office so what do are we doing here don't worry Darling by the way was like you know that I could see there were positive aspects to that film but overall a dud um and that was heavily weighed down by a ton of behindth scenes drama Florence Pew and Chris Pine survived I don't know what Chris Pine's doing right now he's living his best life that's what he's doing uh and Harry Styles though basically quit acting that's how bad that experience was while Olivia wild is still trying to get out of director jail lucky for her Margo Robbie is using part of her Barbie Capital to give wild another shot and the challengers RT score is dropping couldn't stay in the 9s that's awful for a movie like this I don't think guadino will be given the chance to direct any films with mainstream Ambitions again unless his upcoming movie with Daniel Craig is a huge hit this is why you always have your next filmed locked and loaded boys and girls for a safety net then Zena now don't cry for Zena Zena is a star and always will be I mean the red carpet publicity alone that she got out of this uh launch was fa fabulous for her but Hollywood was thinking she might be another megawatt actress producer hybrid like Margo Robbie they were kind of feeding off of each other from their red carpet looks this new method dressing right that Zena team by the way got that term coined but you know Margo Robbie certainly doing the same thing but you know Challengers did not materialize even as you know it wasn't going to be Barbie but it's not even an art House Barbie so think I'm thinking maybe Zena maybe she could be another Angelina Jolie an award well when Angelina Julie was doing well an award-winning Fashion Icon actress with a ton of fans but who's not super reliable at the box office and to be fair Margo Robbie only does have just one hit right now but it's like one of the biggest hits of all time and nobody thought they someone could make Barbie such a big hit so that's very impressive you know Nicole Kidman is another good comp for and DEA both Jolie and Kidman are also drawn to provocative content like challenges and here's an interesting thing fa and O Conor are the ones though who are doing the pro provocative scenes and Challengers which might be why they're getting more attention you know uh Zena some of you have pointed out that Zena is actually uh not does not do scenes that are that provocative even though she appears in provocative content like Euphoria as well and so I don't know how much longer uh you know she obviously should do whatever she feels comfortable with but if and she won a lot of awards for Euphoria it's an interesting question but I definitely think that fa and OK Conor off of the red carpet uh are getting the most attention for Challengers now Kidman just rece just received a Lifetime Achievement Award over the weekend at AFI where she looked stunning by the way wow her red carpet her her her um her stylist also did a banger job she always looks great but that she looks really amazing uh and while there are a lot of box office Duds spotlighted here at the event seeing them all together as a career is pretty impressive you know for other reasons Nicole Kidman not a big box office draw but you can see why she's still iconic so Zena I think fanwise though is bigger than Nicole Kidman has ever been which is why I made the Angelina Jolie comparison at the height of Angelina Jolie's popularity which what do you know actually both Julie and Kidman's rise to fame included romances with their Co coars just like zenas uh does oh man there there's such formulas at play in Hollywood it's fascinating it's actually really hard for actresses so so to be fair to all of these actresses it's very difficult for actresses to be consistent at the box office now you could argue is that because you know some of the misogyny that exists in the world is it because there aren't as good roles written for women but I think all these things are at play and that's why it's good to see more women going into producing and finding great roles for themselves like Margo Robbie with right although who got the most credit for that movie Ryan Gosling uh but anyway it's very hard for actresses to be a consistent draw at the box office and I'm not talking about by the way about actresses who just happen to be in big Blockbusters that's really thrown off it's really skewed uh the list of actresses who make money because a lot of times that movie would have made money if they were in it or not I'm talking about actresses who consist who can consistently open a movie by themselves they are the draw really throughout Hollywood history like Doris Day and Julia Roberts are two big ones you know uh and women but actresses by the way are doing quite well in television and now first it was in TV then it was in cable and now it's in streaming so actresses are doing very well there uh but you know it's a small this it's a short list so yeah of course Zeno will keep working she'll work forever and I hope she continues to produce and surely for someone as smart as Zenda she's a genius you can see it this is a sign to shift course a bit with her non franchise Fair uh and and also I would say if she's not going to do the provocative scenes she might want to consider you know doing something like uh finding her Aaron Brockovich you know where the most provocative thing Julie Roberts do is wear a low cut shirt you know like but yet the film it was a little bit of a change for her it was a really you know step Soderberg was the director which gave that movie a lot of cache that's something to consider we're going to talk about Zena's Oscar goals in just a minute which I think should be her goal you know Margot Robbie's trying to win an Oscar too but as for zena I think she should she should shift what kind of movies she's going to produce for herselves outside of franchise fair and speaking of franchise fair I bet now she's happy and I'm happy too I was saying I wanted to get away from girlfriend rolls but woo thank goodness she's got them to fall back on with Dune 3 and Spider-Man 4 to guarantee continued box office Blockbusters on her resume you need that now Zena already has a lot of very well very much deserved D Awards in the TV space for Euphoria but now I think she needs to cement her status as an A-list film actress she doesn't even have an Oscar nomination yet but she hasn't really been trying I mean let's I mean Zinda let's zind well I mean Challengers was her trying and you know it ain't over she might get a nomination for Challengers like let's see how competitive the field ends up being but I think that she should focus on trying to get an Oscar nomination and win outside of continuing with franchise work and the best way to do that is to work with directors have won other actors and actresses Oscars Zena trying to forge her own Awards path first with Malcolm and Marie when she reted with her Euphoria writer director Sam levenson and now Challengers with Luca guadino it's not working she should go with tradition she should go to the safe award space that's what I would recommend that she do call up scor sayi man see if he's got something I mean who doesn't want to work with Zena but you never know as I said while this box office for Challengers is just so bad we'll have to see how it work season goes and don't underestimate Amy Pascal who's actually a really good Awards campaigner she produced Greta gerwig's Little Women of course which got six nominations and one for costume design and of course spiderverse has done very well in the award space as well all Challengers needs his Noms it doesn't even need to win it just needs those Noms and that would save this endeavor for both guadino guadino and Zena again as I said it's already a win for fa o' Conor and debut screenwriter Justin kuritzky who is now part of a Hollywood Awards uh film power couple with past lives Seline song I mean just the novelty that they both have such big films two years in a row that alone is going to power them for like their next couple of projects kuritzky by the way is writing Luca guano's next movie with Daniel Craig and also maybe Challengers will do well on digital but you know you can't count on it anymore because the audience didn't materialize for Love Lies bleeding I'm surprised by that that it couldn't even make the top 10 that to me is shocking and poor things did okay numbers on Hulu but it didn't become a streaming sensation but that makes saltburn what saltburn did on Prime video all the more impressive like that was cool but now even more so if I were Emerald fennels team I would be talking that up I'd be like hey Emerald fennel can get people talking even if she can't make you any money or win you any awards I think it did well in some spaces but she can make a splash she's got something uh that's the that's speaking of agents and managers that's the whole job your client got something going for him finally producer Zena might also want to take note that she made a movie with almost no appeal to older movie goers and she needs them if she wants to make a solid dent in the box office that's interesting those people might not be on social media where Zena does quite well but she as you can see I mean her movie skewed unusually young uh for a film so something to something you know just hey it's a note for the next project Zenda thankfully Challengers just made the cinema score cutoff point with a B+ as I've told you many times before by the way someone was like why are you equating the Rotten Tomatoes audience score with that grade the thing in the yellow circle is the cinema score it's not a grade that I'm taking extrapolating out of the RT audience score those are two different scores from two different groups Rotten Tomatoes uh audience score which is self- submitted on Rotten Tomatoes website uh and then uh I think they just uh restrict that number to verified uh so try to try and not have review bombing but then Cinema score is done by in real life by actual people who are asking actual people at movie theaters across the country not every single one it's spoted uh like they do in politics and like in politics you know it's not always necessarily accurate however in the movie business this the cinema score has been pretty accurate when it determines the longevity of a film how long it might play in leaders or if it's going to disappear real fast and anything lower than a B+ tends to mean it's going to disappear pretty fast uh civil War's holding on okay we'll talk about that in a moment but yeah you know unless you're a horror movie you don't want to go lower than a B+ uh so so very so very very interesting uh all right so oh yeah also Cinema score tends to spot pole in mainstream theaters particularly in the middle of the country they don't go to the art housee theaters and so that would also be not great for some of these movies movies which would maybe why maybe be why they don't want a cinema score all right so Civil War got hit with a B minus but it's still now a24 second most successful film of all time domestic although despite a very solid hold this past weekend I don't see it catching up with everything everywhere all at once it might get pretty close but I don't I think everything everywhere all at once is Crown is is is safe uh although is a24 gets more Savvy in the box office space someone else another another movie might come along will it be Max well I don't think so but we'll see and while overseas audiences have been very kind to Civil War where the heck are you at the box office because you can see that overseas number is ridiculously low and at this point a24 is going to lose money not a little bit of money some real money on Civil War especially because they spent so much money on Advertising so Civil War better get those Noms and hopefully at least one win also it can maybe bring in a lot of Revenue on digital we'll see uh as and I guess you know they got that money from Max to have an exclus the exclusive streaming right so they're feeding that that monster right so that's good I mean they're making that deal look worthwhile hard as for the rest of the weekend box office another faith-based film did Solid box office this time released by Lionsgate much better than the other the third film that was released this weekend boy kills World which barely managed to make the top 10 at all the alien re-release almost edged it out yikes those scars guard Brothers might be pretty to look at but ain't nobody willing to pay to see him Alex has done uh very well on streaming and if the crow remake doesn't work out for Bill and I don't think it's going to he might want to focus more on streaming as well Dune is almost finally out of the top 10 but it did it it did it it crossed 700 million worldwide Lisa algib indeed as for last weekend's new releases Abigail fell about you know almost 50% to fifth place with just about 19 million total so far in two weeks while Henry Cav's bom office continues to disappoint with his new movie falling almost 60% and it only has a little over 15 million so far ah is its domestic total both these movies now are going to have to rely on the kindness of digital and both hit very soon the same week in fact Abigail comes out next Tuesday May uh May 7th and then the ministry of ungentlemanly warfare drops the following Friday on May 10th like monkey man though which was a box office flop monkey man is now currently numbered to on iTunes right next to Dune that's a good look for the film and if it can hold into if it can hold in the digital top 10 for the next couple of weeks Dev Patel will be back in it you never know in Hollywood you got to just keep going if you can over on streaming starting with neelon for the end of March this was the week that Disney plus and Hulu officially merged and wow look at Family Guy go placing six on the overall chart but speaking of Animation I talked about this a little bit in my X-Men 97 breakdown this week let's dive into it a little bit more this was the second week for X-Men 97 with three episodes at this point the sixth week for the bad batch season 3 and the third week for invincible season 2 part two the latter two shows with a lot of episodes under their belt 41 for the bad batch and 16 for invincible yet none of them are on the originals chart much less the overall chart bluee Samurai made the originals chart number nine but hey it made it back in December and that was a binge and and interestingly what if season 2 which was a daily drop so almost a binge managed to make the orig The Originals neelon chart in December as well number six when it C when it came out so should animation especially animation aimed at adults maybe be a bing drop hm does a show also does the show need to make the neelon charts to be considered a success I'd argue it needs to make the originals chart not necessarily the overall chart but if it's not even on the originals chart where the numbers can get pretty low then it's just really not part of the conversation also while liveaction shows I think benefit from a weekly conversation I don't know if it's the same for animated shows especially if the audience is this much smaller only Xmen 97 I'd say is an exception because the weekly release uh well perhaps low in viewership makes such a big splash on social media every week this Baby's trending I mean I think one episode didn't quite Trend but for the most part it gets a lot of social media attention and we haven't even done the three-part season finale yet which starts this week so what do you think is the best way to release animated shows for adults and how do you think these shows are doing even though they're not in the neelon ratings are you watching any of these shows and are your friends and family or is it just you are you watching it by yourself darn it speaking of The Originals chart there's Shogun holding steady right in the middle the only non Netflix show on the chart and that that is valuable we'll see we'll see if Hulu can make this a major Awards winner some of you pointed out it's actually not in the drama category it would be in the limited release category you know limited series but that that list is awfully crowded this uh this year as well so it's going to be tough competition but Shogun shogun's a great show all right with movies Roadhouse is still number one with the accountant right behind it uh that week debuting on Netflix and sure enough the accountant sequel is going to be a streaming movie but on Prime video which is a Roadhouse which is like Roadhouse so uh you know uh n and Prime video are caught in a swirling Vortex there as for Netflix's charts while Rebel Moon part two got eviscerated by critics and totally ignored on social media this round for the most part it's still held on to its audience so that's nice debuting about the same a little softer but about the same as part one it would have been nice if its audience went up I mean obviously you would want so many people to have watched part one you know it's been a couple of months at this point that they all showed up to watch part two when it dropped but no you know I think you know you're basically looking at the size of Zack Snider's fandom that's kind of what you're looking at where how it exists right now like the hardcore Zack Snyder fans who will watch whatever he does which is good because he has an animated Netflix show coming up speaking of adult animation all right but the big next big test for this property Rebel moon will be its first full week on Netflix part one grew a little bit to 34 million views and its first full week so we'll see if part two also goes up or if maybe it goes down which would be really bad then with shows sure enough baby reindeer jumped to number one for its first full week but it's a soft number one compared to other recent shows with their first full week however Netflix is surely relishing having the next big H hot hot new show that everyone's talking about uh you know that's very very good and Netflix has more Super Hot uh out of coming out of nowhere shows than any other streaming service and this is an extremely cheap show to produce at that now baby reinder though is based on Star Richard gad's real life experience is and so the show is walking very fine line in the media space but so far so far it's managed to stay on the right side of things we'll see if baby reindeer can become an awards darling in the streaming space and star Jessica gunning might get some work off of it but with Gad having a pension for autobiographical tell-alls will people in Hollywood want to work with him when it means they might become the subject of a future project I think he'll surely get some kind of follow-up show at Netflix unless one of these still developing news stories takes a really bad term this show this show which I think is part of its appeal is really playing with fire and so um you know we'll see if it can again walk that very fine line uh over on iTunes as I said monkey man is doing quite nicely with Arthur the king uh doing solid not as well but solid I would I would suspect that uh also similarly feel-good true story ordinary Angels is eating away at its audience those those are kind of going after the same group and zanda Euphoria co-star Sydney swe has two movies in the top 10 right now Sweeney might not be blowing up like her anyone but you co-star Glenn Powell was is it just because of Madam web Sydney sweene is probably like why is Glenn pal doing so much better uh that is interesting but anyway Glenn pal he's taken off like a rocket they're both producing things too by the way uh but Sydney Sweeney definitely still has some momentum and because of all this Madame Webb did not kill her career as for this coming weekend after Deadpool and Wolverine got pushed to Late July because of the actor strike the guy is the movie kicking off the summer movie season and it's now expected it got a bit of a boost before the industry thought it would open with 33 now it might be 40 there's a lot writing on this film for all involved but especially Ryan Gosling post Barbie and there's no Angry Birds to KO Ryan Gosling this time there is zero competition at the multiplex on digital the long game drops Tuesday we were just talking about that in theaters while Arcadian with Nicholas Cage drops Wednesday I don't know why it's dropping on Wednesday movies drop on Tuesday or Friday man maybe Nicholas Cage I mean he just does whatever he wants so I guess that includes digital releases as for streaming movies on Thursday Prime videos the idea of you has a ton of heat hot project hot project produced by and starring and hathway along with Nicholas gitzen who is a very hot Star right now thanks to some recent sizling LGBT roles so we'll see if he takes that audience over to this project while on front Friday after Jerry Seinfeld declared the movie business dead he is releasing a movie himself on Netflix unfrosted which he co-wrote and directed it's a passion project he's long talked about his love of Pop-Tarts now he's telling the comedic fictional origin story for them I don't know what's going on with this film uh but I do know that even though it didn't look that good to begin with I think the knives are going to be out for this film again after his comments about the movie business but we'll see then with shows on Tuesday Hulu starts the veil Thursday Netflix is a man in full which is not just from David E Kelly but also Regina King who stepping behind the camera here producing as well as directing several episodes and then also hack season 3 starts on Max which is incredible by the way I got the whole season in advance I thought season two was good but this is incredible this is as good as season 1 which originally put hacks on the map so good uh finally on Saturday John millan's new show starts on Netflix this is interesting it streams nightly live spotlighting comedians in La who are all in town for Netflix's big Comedy Festival all right so that's this week's movie math what have you been watching what do you plan to watch and how big or small
