$100,000 USD and no apple car play.
What a freaking joke.
They showed an example of the built in map and it didnโt even have the lake right next to them as a searchable destination. It took apple and android years of dedication to work out kinks in mapsโฆ I donโt expect car companies to be anywhere near as good ever.
Fine, I'll watch one of these car guys with arms crossed videos.
What a bummer about the intro. This is an unfortunate thing to ask, but what software version were yโall on? Last years December update had significant ride quality updates.
The mid screen overuse is real, but their steering wheel modification were incorrect. You can tap your profile name and then Steering Wheel. Better than most โfull digitalโ controls.
People buying unfinished cars is setting a really bad example to the industry
Hmm, im sensing a pattern haha. Well, that aside, i've always found it interesting that Rivians have stand out steering feel. I remember Jason Cammisa stating that the R1T has low speed steering feel rivaling even the best Porsches. I really want to know how Rivian's engineers managed to give two boat anchors steering communication when so many modern sporty vehicles are lifeless.
This is very close to my ideal vehicle. I strongly considered putting in an order. But I decided not to.
WHY:
-I work remotely, and I often live out of my car for days at a time so I can wander while I work.
-I hike almost every day, I'm an on-call wilderness first responder, and I hunt in season, so I go on horrible dirt roads and rocky trails just all the damn time.
-My girlfriend lives in a fully solar-powered home, and if we decide to move in together then I am promptly breaking ground on a solar-powered cabin in the mountains.
As such, my ideal vehicle is a spacious and offroad-y SUV. But it's also an EV, so I can A) charge it for free, B) use it as a big battery for charging my laptop and camping stuff, C) free up the frunk for more storage, and D) stop carrying around 60lbs worth of fuckin' portable power stations whenever I go romping.
Oh, and E, not have to worry about my catalytic converter getting stolen!
So like... this. My ideal vehicle is fucking this. Right?
WHY NOT:
1) The price. Fuck me, dude - if you go below 100k you get even less range and no 4WD. For that price I could pick up a brand new 4Runner TRD Offroad and save 60 THOUSAND DOLLARS - 70 if I buy used!
But the EV is cheaper to run, right? At a conservative 16mpg and $3.50 per gallon, a 4Runner will cost me about 22k in gas and oil over 100,000 miles. Assuming the EV has $0 cost to drive - I charge it 100% on my own solar - I'd still have to drive the R1S for 300,000 miles to break even on the purchase. At the amount I drive, that'd take 30 years.
But even that's not right, because:
2) BATTERY LONGEVITY. My understanding is that 10 years / 100,000 miles is going to be really pushing it for an EV battery. My understanding is that, right now, replacing EV batteries costs a god damned fortune. Like, 20k or more. Which is as much or more as the cost of the gas that a 1GR-FE will drink in the same period.
This means that, even if electricity is literally free, the EV has the same running cost as a gas-guzzling 4Runner!
3) Dependability. If I bought a 4Runner or a half-ton pickup, I would know what I was getting. It would be pretty dependable. It will last me 10 years and it will probably go 20+. And it will have parts available for probably that entire lifecycle. And it will have a rich aftermarket. And any random mechanic will know how to work on it.
I just don't know enough with Rivian yet. It's a pretty new manufacturer, a brand new model, and that makes it awful hard to justify a price tag that could get me a 4Runner... and a 3.0 Supra too!
4) It's too fancy inside. It's not that I don't need it - I actively don't want it. My use case is "dirty, dirty boy." Give me the Bronco's marine vinyl or the Jeep's 1980s MacDonald's interior any day.
5) If I'm going to drive an iMac it at least better have Apple CarPlay, I mean, my dudes. My. Dudes.
CONCLUSION:
My sincere hope is that there will soon be an an EV SUV (or reg-bed pickup), with quad motors and decent clearance, that comes with an easily washable (or just, shitty) interior, and doesn't cost as much as a GTS4.0.
I'm guessing it's gonna be a while. I might be holding my breath forever and a day. But until then, or until they take the handles off the gas-pumps, think I'm sticking with ICE.
Anyway, that was my thinking!
Is this the first TH vid without a silly intro?
Throttle House Hot Ones video when?
Is it just me or did they nitpick this thing for 15 minutes and then at the end said it was unbeatable
