2023 Cadillac LYRIQ review // Was it worth the wait?

we've got the lyric Cadillac's pure electric vehicle took about a year to get here let's go for a ride you ready yep oh they piping some sound I'm not sure if you can hear that it sounds a bit like a spaceship all right we're in the lyric what's under the floor this thing the lyric has both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options available both with 102 kilowatt hour battery we're driving the rear-wheel drive model with 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque it gets up to 505 kilometers 308 miles of range the all-wheel drive version has 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque up to 505 kilometers and 307 miles of range so this is a Cadillac a luxury product from General Motors must come with some nice stuff let's get into it what are the key standard features the Leer comes with a heat pump a 33 inch LED diagonal display Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto over-the-air software updates a wireless charger seven speaker audio system heated power front seats with lumbar support drivers seat memory leatherette upholstery fix full glass roof and a power lift gate so this has a center wheel to control the screen and you can use the touch screen what are we going to put Vehicles based on this platform from General Motors it's the Altium platform gone is the older technology like in the bowl it's going to come out first with Blazer and then Equinox and if this is anything to go by Andrea I think they've got a winning strategy yeah this feels like a typical Cadillac obviously we've got an electric vehicle so it's smooth and you get that quick acceleration which we expect from EVS but this definitely has that comfortable drive a softer suspension the steering's a little bit lighter when you put it in sport mode sure things firm up a little bit but not a lot but you know what I think people who are into Cadillac will like this and I know that there's a bigger spectrum of people that like traditional luxury than a real performance vehicle you still get all that performance that 500 horsepower from the electric motor or Motors and so you're going to have your cake and eat it too you get the comfort and you get the punch when you need it my favorite thing about this Andrea is driving and looking out over the big long Hood yeah it really does look good you know we've got the rear wheel drive model and it doesn't have that 500 horsepower but boy is it ever quick and that's what I like about electric vehicles is it doesn't matter if you get the lower horsepower vehicle you're still still gonna get that quick acceleration and all of that torque they can control the regen braking with the paddle shifters or you can go into the touch screen and put it on one pedal drive so I think one of the main standouts of this product is the way it looks The Styling I think is killer especially from the front it's got this panel that's got the lights embedded in it when you come and unlock the vehicle the lights do this big dance and is it gimmicky yes do I like it oh hell yeah I like it well it's got that Cadillac Pizzazz that's for sure this gets seven inches of ground clearance I love how this looks I think it's one of the better EVS on the road I like the slim LED vertical headlights the illuminated Grille I think the back end looks sharp you know the only thing I don't like are the door handles when you go up to the vehicle you push on the handle they don't pop out it's the door that pops out and on the driver and passenger side you do have a little lever I guess that you can pull on but the rear seats you don't so you kind of have to reach around to the door to open it I think they could do a much better job on this and there's also no rear wiper which I think is a mess okay so back to the door handles uh and it's not been working perfectly so you come up to it and you hit it and you expect to pop open and it doesn't pop open all the way you got to push it in and do it again and we heard there might be a rumor that these These are going away so General Motors please replace these with something better that would be good and with the tailgate in the back you just hit the Cadillac logo and it opens I'm not sure what happened to me yesterday I was loading groceries in and the door started closing on me well maybe I had he did the swipe underneath it's cool looking and this has the bigger wheels and they're nice looking not like a lot of electric vehicles where the wheels are really fugly this really offsets the black on this car with the Sleek lines I think it's a great looking TV this comes standard with LED headlights LED tail lights standard 20 inch wheels available 22 inch and a tire repair kit if you choose to get a sportier look go for the sport model it's got some black accents and also body colored door handles this comes standard with chrome door handles all right so that's the outside then you look at the inside so it's a win on the outside it's an equal win on the inside this is beautifully done General Motors and Cadillac specifically does do some really nice Interiors we've been very impressed with their products the last few times we've driven them and I I like this Andrew I think it looks really good yeah it's a comfortable interior it's got a floating center console plenty of storage you've got storage at the bottom of the console you also have a storage spot right under the climate controls and then of course the glove box now to open the glove box you have to go into the screen to do that I don't know why there's an extra step but there is we've got the fixed glass roof but it does this it does have a shade yes but there is one that opens right yeah there is one there's an available panoramic sunroof that opens this has got a stunning 33 inch diagonal screen in here with 9k resolution Google built and I think that this is a real standout I like on the left side of the screen that you can do different things on it such as map that's where you turn on your headlights but if you also want a clean screen in front of you you can do that and remove all the Clutter so a couple of nice things in this one it has the AKG sound system we're going to talk about that in a moment they also have the massage seats now it's not like you're going to one of those places where they give you a real workout it just massages you lightly so on a long road trip you don't get too fatigued I mean I'm really oh the one thing I don't like Andrea don't like the way they put the seat controls on the door like Mercedes-Benz I think they're way better down here what else is like Mercedes the shifter yeah the shifter you've got a column shifter here this one's slightly different than Mercedes-Benz you have to pull it Forward first and then up or down to reverse or drive this has got ventilated front seats heated front seats and it's all on the door you've got one where that does your butt and then the other one that does your butt and your back and I got to tell you it gets toasty in here the heated steering wheel is heated all the way through as well so Andrea already referenced the sport model we're in luxury as it should be does it end there well there's just so many trims to choose from we went through the base model and those key standard features and then there's luxury one two and three sport one two and three in the U.S you'll pay a little bit more for the sport model in Canada the luxury and the sport model are the exact same price just a slightly different look but you get the same features some of those available features include super Cruz a 19.2 kilowatt onboard charger the 19 speaker AKG audio system ambient lighting panoramic power open sunroof black painted roof Napa leather interior heated steering wheel ventilated front seats and heated rear seats and speaking of the rear seats here's me getting in the back seat this thing is very comfortable you have a lot of leg room and you would think with the Sleek roof it doesn't have a lot of Headroom it actually does how does it Stack Up comparing the lyric to the Lexus RZ or the Genesis gv60 the lyric offers two inches more front row legroom than both at 44.3 inches second row legroom is also excellent at 39.6 inches that's over two inches more than these competitors when you lift the power liftgate you get a very useful space in there underneath the cargo floor there is some extra storage and that's where the cable is kept and the nice thing is the rear seats have a remote release function and they go down quickly cargo space behind the second row at 28 cubic feet falls short to these competitors by a little bit and overall cargo capacity at 60.8 cubic feet is more than the Lexus and Genesis but they're all pretty close unfortunately the lyric does not offer a frunk so I have a shot of the front you lift it up and there's a Cadillac cover which is removable so I just snuck it off and underneath is the control module and that's where the front electric motor would be so there you go all right let's get into it you have questions about cysterio time now for questions coffee and cars your questions from Instagram I had a chance to see this in the flash at the Toronto auto show what a beautiful vehicle it is some of the materials finishes the little attention to detail was unparalleled what would you compare this with is this kind of a lone wolf in this segment but I would say in my opinion Andrea the closest to this would be the gb70 electrified it had a beautiful interior too yeah as well as the gv60 they know how to do a beautiful interior Genesis high quality materials no piano black very little hard plastic and I would say that this is equivalent to it I think Cadillac's done a really beautiful job with this interior I think the styling on the outside and the finish on the inside is a real major selling and the amazing range I think that this is such a sexy vehicle sexy it is one of the best looking SUVs for an electric vehicle because they do get a little quirky right well they're still going to work on the door handles but that's something they could work on door handles for sure the weight has been far too long need to hear your opinion on the sound system compared to the Escalade we did Rave about the 36 speaker AKG sound system in the Escalade amazing yeah so in my opinion I think Andrea agrees that is the best sound system I've ever heard in a vehicle so the AKG system the Escalade Top Notch this is not the same system and I tried it out yesterday with the same track actually my my go-to test track is Chris Stapleton cold because it starts out very low and crescendos and not the same punch as that system this is a 19 speaker stereo system it has the speakers in the headdress but the other one is just oh my gosh it's just amazing it's got more punch got more Punch Yeah like it's hard to describe it but it is just so wonderful this is not the same but this is X excellent as well okay so these speakers here in the headrests don't think that they're going to blast your ears you don't even notice they're on what they do is they just help fill in a little bit of the sound and it's it's great technology the first car I ever saw that was with the 93 or four Miata had that and I'm glad they're using the same thing how is the route planning and fast charging curve those have been my two biggest questions about the new Altium platform from GM as I am a long time bolt owner looking to upgrade to an ultium vehicle the bolt is so good I'm still disappointed they're getting rid of that I read something yesterday what they're Mary Berra the CEO and chairwoman of General Motors hinted that there might be a bolt replacement on the ultim platform yeah that doesn't surprise me at all but I like the bowl that was not on the Altium platform and it was so affordable but maybe they can do the same if they come out with a new bolt so the charging capability the speed is up to 190 kilowatt which isn't the fastest at a DC fast charger it's kind of comparable to like Lexus with the RZ at 150 kilowatts Andrea RZ yeah but it's Genesis that offers some incredible fast charging at a DC fast charger but most people will charge at home with a level 2 charger so Porsche and then the Hyundai group have a 800 volt architecture and this is based on a 400 volt architecture so that's one of the things and I think General Motors is doing that for longevity of the battery so you could Ram in a whole bunch of electrons into the battery but it's going to cook the battery quicker than if you do it slowly over time and I think that's why they're doing it and even if you speak to the Hyundai group about this they'll say use a DC fast charger sparingly because it does affect the battery as for route planning to find a charger it's excellent this has got Google built in so I just use the voice command talk to Google and she put it all up on the screen for me it was super easy and I have to say when you give her a command she listens that's what we do as men we just listen when she gives you a command he just listens right guys you know gosh you're learning Zach you're really learning and now it's time for our Hot Topic what's this one Andrea I know a few people who've owned Cadillacs and reliability has been an issue has this improved now we have a bit of a problem here is that this vehicle hasn't been in Market long enough in a very very small sample size you know many of these they've sold Andrea or actually delivered to customers how many like less than three thousand and a year so they're trickling out so they're not going to have a good sample size for reliability but the brand overall is improving right for sure well JD Power in its recent 2023 dependability study is booked Cadillac above average for the industry and something like the Escalade for example has a score of 80 out of 100 now it did have some issues when it first came out but now it has improved and Cadillac has become a brand that actually you can really depend on okay so if you look at the trend line over the last five years a few General Motors brands have indexed well above the industry average when it comes to Quality Buick is right at the top of the list Chevrolet is another one that has indexed well above the industry average and Cadillac as well so General Motors is doing a lot right this is the very first Altium platform vehicle so we'll have to wait and see how it does so you want to know the charging times can this thing even Tow and More in our vital stats let's start with pricing we'll do Canada first and then the U.S we've got both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models listed and the starting price is just under seventy thousand dollars Canadian in the U.S it starts at just over 58 and a half thousand dollars the lyric comes with an 11.5 kilowatt onboard charger and with an available 19.2 kilowatt onboard charger at a DC fast charger with a charging speed up to 190 kilowatt with the 11 7.5 kilowatt on board charger you will gain up to 49 kilometers 30 miles of range per hour and with the larger onboard charger 82 kilometers 51 miles of range per hour in the United States if the trim starts under 80 thousand dollars it qualifies for the 7 500 tax credit the lyric does not qualify for the federal EV rebate in Canada if you get the all-wheel drive model it can tow up to 3 500 pounds and the warranty is four years eighty thousand kilometers or 50 000 miles so you like the idea of an electrified utility kind of around this price what else can you buy for your consideration four vehicles for you to consider up first is the Audi Q4 e-tron with 295 horsepower and 388 kilometers 241 miles of range it is a starting price just under 63 and a half thousand dollars the Lexus RZ or Z with 313 horsepower 354 kilometers or 220 miles of range at a starting price of just over sixty eight thousand dollars the Tesla Model y long range with 384 horsepower and 497 kilometers 330 miles of range it is a starting price just under seventy thousand dollars the Genesis gv60 with 314 horsepower 399 kilometers or 248 miles of range and a starting price just over 71 thousand dollars so there are four luxury EVS for you to consider lightning round two things we like two things we like to see improve I love the way this looks I love the interior what I'd like to see are regular door handles and a rear wiper I'd like to see regular door handles two I mean actually Four this lyric checks a lot of the right boxes range Power and it sure looks good can't wait to drive the other vehicles built on this same platform
