the grind the grin and the glory this is mud racing and on this hallowed territory those who get their kicks slipping through the slop will battle for the title of fastest of the best up next unpredictable power from reigns supreme over hills through the holes [Music] [Applause] welcome to one of the most tradition-rich mud racing facilities in the country the dual track lee county mud motorsports complex in sanford north carolina today in the hillenhall pit it's the unlimited class and a big field of mudslingers have come out to tackle the thick clay-based mud on a standard length 250-foot track looking for times in the low fours and even down in three-second record territory and we have got legendary teams from throughout the industry along with crafty veterans and some new iron we'll be getting to see hit the pit and they'll be doing so mostly with the cut super swampers as the d.o.t tires have come off and the valves on the bottles in the back are being opened up much of this class is nitrous fed it's looking to be some super fast racing under the sun now not every team has come into this day of action in one piece as the d.o.t class took its toll on one of the top names in the sport that being the newsom family who found themselves driving around local parts stores and junkyards looking for drivetrain parts after last night's destructive launch this was in the 38 and up class joel newsome [Music] uh the front right went first then the front left sheared off all the bolts and when that went all the power went to the rear end and it took out both u-joints uh the yoke that normally would go on here they destroyed where the snap rings go it all blew out so if they can find a new yoke we'll replace it if not we're going to weld it so the question right now is what condition will that truck be in when it hits the pit because we know it's going to make a run later today again will they have the drug welded together or will they have the proper parts underneath of it we know they're going to lay down a shot up first out of south bend indiana tim mcclanahan and the animal 426 cubic inch small block chevy with the bronx aluminum heads and a holley 950 carburetor with a 300 horsepower nitrous system tim not happy with his performance here last year we'll see what he can do this year as the nitrous system was not cooperating with him here last year we'll see if he can set a solid pace for the rest of the field hopping through the pit tim mcclanahan and the animal laying down a shot at a 6.71 to set the pace nothing to be ashamed of there we'll see if he comes back in session two to try to speed things up the pit is definitely thick today though tim looks happy with the run we'll take another look at it and watch him come off the line digging into the north carolina clay and then planting the horsepower into the mud the first hill he got some big hang time blasting into the second hole getting a little out of shape there in the third leg as he got over near the left side bank slowed him down just a little bit you can see he's already running this pit out quite a bit as one of the legendary families of mud racing pulls up to the line dj curly third generation driver in snoop dogg lexington north carolina one of two orange and white mopower vehicles this family has brought with them this weekend once again out of shape in the third leg this time off to the right hand bank but still picks up some time there at a 5.247 second run that vehicle is well capable of getting down into the threes we'll see if he comes back but once again you can see the rut starting to develop very quickly they will re-groom this track about every three vehicles but we'll see what it does because as they push the suit back into those ruts it doesn't necessarily mean that those ruts will go away in fact if you run right after the track really you can find yourself in a little bit of trouble not being able to see the rut says ben elder comes out of bristol new hampshire and dad's mrs the chevy powered ford ranger to take the number one spot so each run has gotten faster turning the crowd on with one of the former daryl jones chassis there at the lee county mud motorsports complex in sanford north carolina as the crowd is ready for more action in the hill and hole pit up next a guy who had a terrible year here last year chad sexton out of pittsburgh north carolina in the lacking sanity chevrolet only made it about 50 or so feet into the pit had drive train issues that ended his weekend early he would like to make up for that you're talking about a machine that is well capable of getting down into record territory the three second range let's see what sexting can do here in 2022 i'd say he more than made up for last year that had to be fast time as he flew the third hole look at that a 4.133 second run with the black chevy out of the tar heel state let's watch it again good starting line launch watch him keep the front end up lance flat right there and then nose high just a little bit but he almost cleared the third hole landed perfectly down near the finish line and tripped the glocks in a 4-1-3 chad sexton looking good in the lacking sanity chevrolet gonna make it tough on everyone behind him including this guy the man who took it all here last year bill owen out of hamilton michigan in the ford powered rear engine rail called unfiltered i'm sure he would love to knock chad down here there is some definite hang time in the track this weekend i've never seen a rail fly like that but see what bill can do well we're not going to see what bill can do right now something just went away on that ford motor gonna be a tough break for him as you can hear the reaction from the crowd bill owen re-firing the machine though that's a good sign i don't believe he's gonna restage it no he's gonna take it back to the pit area and get it ready for session two doesn't look like anything too serious it's a flash out of the top of the engine right there and then the fire puts itself about a little bit of an alcohol fire there i think but again nothing too too serious as another guy who's capable of getting into the record territory craig agino out of newport north carolina the 94 wrangler called no problem three one of the fastest in this and the d.o.t class second generation driver ready to go putting all 572 cubic inches to the ground trey geno moving quick although we don't have a readout there hopefully he did not waste that pass on a clock malfunction watch him again look at this again keeping the nose up putting it down a little bit right there as he moves off to the right-hand side it was a wild ride and shut down areas he headed toward the fence so we did not get a readout but he did get a time four point one six three so only three hundredths of a second off of top time as the track crew cleans the clocks a little bit here as gachino left a mess on the part of the lens there up next josh newsome the guy we talked about at the top of the show he will make a pass as we said but what condition is the truck in we'll see if it holds up to the punishment he's about to put it through out of hortonville michigan a legacy team in the business this is bad decision beautiful chevy colorado out of cold country the combined know-how of father and uncle and two sons definitely not disappointing the crowd wild ride out the top end of the track as he tail slaps the end of the pit at a 5.02 second run got a little out of shape in the second hole and then trying to bring it back around look at him buried the nose on the right-hand side but he kept the left front tire up on top of the mud kept putting the power to the ground as our next machine up is another legendary name in the sport out of four oaks north carolina another second generation driver ronnie allen in the yellow jacket this is a 1946 chevy with a 447 chevy small block of power glide transmission this vehicle was second in the d.o.t class last night let's see what he can do here in the unlimited well he was bouncing around in that pit using up all the shutdown area to 4.699 so a little off the pace but not a bad run considering i believe he got caught up in a couple of ruts and about a half track and threw him off to the left-hand side of the pit we'll uh watch it again here as ronnie allen puts a horsepower to the ground he straddles the ruts through the first leg and that helped him out tremendously but right here i believe he caught a rut coming over the second hill into the third hole and uh hurt his time a little bit as you can see that pit is definitely starting to take on a life all its own in spite of the grooming up next second generation the curly family out of lexington north carolina's rowdy snoop hemi-powered dodge dakota not the only three second truck they have obviously you saw the other one earlier this machine though should be able to get the job done here this afternoon as their father has been in record-setting territory before let's see what denny can do raining down mud on the grandstands would you expect anything less from the curly family at a 4.346 throwing some slop up here on the fans in the seats it all carrots better than the front row seated sea we're watching again and the boards of the monster blow high putting the horsepower to the track that's sort of a textbook ride for that team though i know he would have liked a faster one he'll come back in session two and try to put a little more power into it if the pit will hold it though it is starting to thicken up and uh i believe the starting line might be going away as our next machine rolls out there's been some chatter about this truck is a lot of people looking at it thinking it doesn't have a shot i have to believe that this thing is going to be a sleeper in the field i walked around it earlier today and uh definitely the equipment to get the job done this is a true blue mud racing vehicle robert gallagher out of slippery rock pennsylvania also has a fast track vehicle called the black mamba that we saw here last year take some wild rides and again as he stages the square body with the 632 cubic inch big block chevrolet engine in the front into the pit you can see how chewed up and thick that starting line area has got wild pass but nothing to be ashamed of at all a 4.6 second run for robert gallagher i said i thought he'd be a sleeper that was an awesome shot for this vehicle 18 inches of suspension travel in this one and it looks like it worked for him watch the front end actually stays in contact with the mud for most of the run even though the rear end was up in the air and he was actually able to keep the front end pulling him out straight and it looks like that worked for him i'm not sure if he'll come back for session two or not but he laid down a shot as that man right there another legend in this business that's larry corbiel out of constantine michigan staging up his daughter nora corbie and uh even a little more insight on this family larry has been the one running the excavator dragging the pole through the pit keeping everything nice and groomed here this weekend so uh we'll see what this team has for the pit no bias though as they're running in the middle of the field so she's actually running on the starting line that's tougher to get a launch on right here but she has a tendency to get wild so cross your fingers that this truck stays upright on its way to the finish line nora corbie not a cold country [Music] i said she had a tendency to get wild that could have been a lot worse some heads up driving there for the lady out of constantine michigan took a sabbatical last year to welcome a new bundle of joy into the world so congratulations to her on that i'm not sure this time is gonna hold up though as she actually bounced out of the mud pit again though good driving to keep that thing on all four wheels as she ended up straddling the left bank here in sanford north carolina she'll be back in session two i know she's got more speed to give to this pit stay with us session one continues when we come back to sanford thicker and thicker on a hot afternoon here at the lee county mud motor sports complex in sanford north carolina we are not even done with session one in the unlimited class and it's gonna get tougher and tougher for everybody as we go deeper into this field up next the 19 year old out of hampstead north carolina in natural attraction this is michael millis 89 chevy s10 on a 1975 k5 blazer chassis take a look real quick at the times as we continue on with session one chad sexton on top and then 4.133 of course trey gogino only three hundredths of a second off of that base we'll see if those two guys come back and have something for each other in session two danny curly robert gallagher and ronnie allen rounding out the field right now in the top five let's see what millis has with the leaf sprung chevy s10 truck sinking into the mud you could tell it was leaf sprung though as he bounded across the pit at a 6.39 not gonna get him into the top of the field but he definitely gave the crowd something to think about as he made a wild pass through the pit watch him again the hookup just is not there on the starting line anymore as it's really thickening up there is a lot of slime up there in the staging area right now and as you get further into the pit the thicker mud does not necessarily mean you're going to stay up on top of it when you get down into it it's harder and harder to get traction it's actually digging the base up off the bottom and mixing it into the pit and if you look on the side of these trucks as they leave the track you can see how quickly the mud is drying on the body panels it's an indication this pit is actually gonna get slower as we get into the afternoon up next the billy stevens out of sanford north carolina you talk about a guy who has something to make up to the fans here last year he blew the top off of this thing in the pit here spent a lot of money didn't even get down the track team truck to scooby-doo billy stevens rocking and rolling in the ford ranger of four five one six and you can see a little smile on dep's face there as she's taking it all in again a big thank you to her for keeping this event alive and well billy stevens laying down a shot that should get him into the top five take another look at it you can see everyone who was here last year was waiting to see if that motor was about to pop if you didn't see that go back and check out our coverage from here in the pit last year as he put on one of the most expensive fireworks shows you will ever see billy stevens laying down a run in daphne and the crowd is standing as the legendary scooby-doo rolls to the starting line the driver john stevens taking over for this man right here and this is the last pass that daryl jones ever put on this vehicle take a look wouldn't expect anything else from one of the wildest men in mud racing daryl jones getting the crowd on their feet they loved it he loved it little did we know that about a month later we would not have daryl around anymore but his legacy lives on and i believe he's watching over us today and gracing us with some absolutely beautiful weather for one of the best days of mud racing we've seen a long time john stevens now in sanford north carolina doing the driving of the scooby-doo ford ranger right here in its own backyard trying to take him over toward the guardrail almost had a repeat of the last run this truck had on the track a 5.14 not going to get in the number one spot but he put on his shell and that's about all you can ask for from scooby doo didn't get the number one spot last year in fact never put down a time so he got a time here this year again though pulling him off to the right-hand side he got in those ruts immediately fought his way through him some heads-up drive in there for john stephen right here in sanford raining down mud on the crowd today as you can see some brighter fans brought some umbrellas well i'm not going to say anything about the people who didn't is fans of all ages enjoying the action here in sanford north carolina up next another one of the wild men and the last guy to ever race daryl jones and no it was not in the mud pit take a look at this neither one of them got a session one time here last year after the wild action so they lined up on the fast track toe to toe literally and went for time here daryl trying to keep his cell phone in his pocket thomas small almost ate it right there won that race with a marlboro hanging out of his mouth small i'm sure was huffing and puffing a little bit after that one but he's back here again this year didn't get his car through the pit last year he expects fully to get a time here in 2022 and it's not gonna happen thomas smalling see him throw the arms up i don't think he can see anything right now as the visor is completely covered we'll watch that one again and uh i'll tell you one of these years he's gonna get that car through this pit and it's gonna be in the record books as the number one wildest pass this crowd has ever seen look at this he's hopping out the announcer go ahead the clock is still running by the way he's got a much longer way to go than he did last year last year the car stopped in the last hole this year didn't even make it over the first hill you can see how shallow it gets up on top of those knolls as small takes a spill into the pit now and he's got his right foot stuck down in the halls thomas small not gonna post the time this year but uh as always putting on a show for the crowd chad sexton remains in the number one spot at that four one three three trey gagino again three hundredths of a second off of that denny curley in the 4-3-4-6 billy stevens with the 4-5-1-6 and robert gallagher rounding out the top five and a 4.60 i'd say it's about time for thomas small to give up the smokes i think he could have finished that he uh was uh able to use the full lung capacity i think he's feeling that jog he just took down the track though he's all right big smile on his face under the hot north carolina sun he'll go get cleaned up and we will come back for session two from right here at the lee county mud motorsports complex in robert gallagher out of the top five with that awesome run in scooby-doo watch again you can see the hook on the starting line is pretty much gone he started way to the right hand side though i believe trying to stay out of the ruts the headers blowing mud sky high and he finished the run textbook fashion showering down the grand stands with slop got to be happy with that right it's awesome to see that truck still out here and running with stevens family keeping daryl's memory alive and well and speaking of the stevens family here comes billy stevens in the team truck daphne now to sanford north carolina for his second pass purging the nitrous 600 plus cubic inches going to work as he uses up the shutdown area to four six six four so he's not gonna better his own time and that will leave him in the number five spot right now at a four point five one six second time from his uh first session run again with the starting lines going away and he uh actually crossed up the ruts there on the starting line that may have hurt his time just a little bit kept the front end up for the most part though as he did dip it a couple times but he did not bury it in the pit see bill allen over there trying to get back in the program for session two up next michael millis out of hampstead north carolina in the k5 chassis s10 with the leaf spring suspension see what the tar heel bow tie has for section two is the thumbs up and the green digging through the pit with the rear tire i can tell you right now it's 6-3 1-4 for milla so he improves on his session one time but it's not gonna get him into the top of the field here comes the family out of constantine michigan the coal country chevrolet twisted little sister larry corbiel the man who's been grooming the track here this afternoon trying to keep it in as tip-top shape as possible been a little bit tough with the heat but we're definitely seeing some good action here as nora rolls into stage purges the nitrous let's see if she can keep it in the pit this time we know she's capable of putting a fast run on this track they're all trying to stay to the right-hand side it looks like that's where the speed's gonna be a 5.158 for nora corbio still not gonna get her into the top five but nothing to be ashamed of there especially considering the run she laid down in session one is our next vehicle up is going to be an interesting one this for those familiar with the history of mud race you might recognize this machine as the old risky business jeep that ran on the camel mud and monster series back in 1991 and 1990 as well and one of the many vehicles out of the new england area that made a big impression on that era of mud racing it's great to see it still out here now powered by a junkyard 6-0 out of a cadillac escalade turbo charge ready to go down the track he's been having trouble with it though this weekend we'll see what he's got you see the hand go up right there he cannot get this thing down the track it seems like he had the same problem on the fast track yesterday if he could get the horsepower into this pit he could be one of the fastest here today as the crowd takes a seat to watch him go mike ferlin out of norway main can he get the job done bouncing off the bank but it's a legal pass and a beautiful one at that even though it was a wild ride a 5-6-3-0 not bad considering the trouble he was having getting this thing down the track what a run for the legendary altar jeep originally on a new hampshire now into the state of maine and again it's awesome to see this thing still out here and running watch him again as he comes over the first till he bounces right into the bank and he says this machine handles the same way every time the rear end kind of comes around on him is able to drive it out with the front seems to push itself straight as long as he stays in the throttle our final competitor of the evening bill owen last year's champion here at the fastest of the fast looking to take the memorial fastest of the fast victory away from chad sexton who has continued to sit number one after his session one pass let's see if bill owen can get down the track no he will not the ford powered rear engine rail unfortunately coming to a halt only a few feet into the pit a very disappointing way for bill owen to end his uh run here in sanford but still positive mental attitudes he gives a thumbs up to the crowd they're gonna have to come in i think and toe him off the tracker congratulations to chad sexton who remained number one after session one with that four point one three three second time trey degeno hanging in there in second with an impressive run as well danny curly john stevens who popped back up in session two to push billy stevens down into the number five spot of course when john did that it knocked robert gallagher down into the number six spot so it's been an awesome awesome day of racing here under the sun we're not done yet though from here in sanford the next time you see us here at the hill and hole pit will be with the mega trucks you will not want to miss that once again congratulations chad sexton and a big thanks to deb jones
