[Music] how do you make the very popular bronco even better well you make a raptor version of course this is the all-new 2022 ford bronco raptor we check out all the features and then put it to the test that's coming up right now on driving sports tv [Music] the ford bronco is already one of the most capable suvs you can buy with its advanced off-road features wide stance and turbocharged engine the bronco quickly became a favorite of adventure-seeking buyers throughout north america even though ford hasn't quite caught up with deliveries of its new bronco they're already upping the ante with a new more powerful version this is the 2022 ford bronco raptor or as we like to call it the brapter prices you see it here including some options 74 425 us dollars including destination under the hood is a twin turbocharged 3 liter v6 engine that produces up to 418 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque that's up from a maximum 330 horsepower in the bronco wild track edition the broncos engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and it powers all four wheels with ford's on-demand automatic four-wheel drive system the body here is 9.8 inches wider than a base trim bronco that's thanks to these big fender flares and meaty tires speaking of tires this comes standard bfg trail terrain ko2s these are a legendary off-road tire they have really meaty blocks and they are of course snow rated now they are wrapped around this really cool looking black lacquered 17-inch wheel and yeah you're saying that's a lot of tire right it is this is a 37-inch yeah i don't think tires are gonna be a problem today look at the width those are huge i know it probably goes without saying yeah there is a full-size matching spare on the back like you would expect but it's not the tires or even the engine that's the most important upgrade on this raptor in fact it's the suspension this includes the haas 4.0 suspension system that includes fox live valve internal bypass semi-active dampers these are 3.1 inch units attached to unique control arms in the front and rear to provide up to 13 inches of front and 14 inches of rear travel this thing also comes standard with a lot of underbody protection it of course also has recovery hooks and further it has a disconnectable front sway bar like we saw on previous versions of the bronco but now it has both a rear and front locker this thing's ready for anything when looking at a bronco raptor economy isn't the first thing you're considering but i do have to say this gets 15 miles to the gallon in town and 16 miles to the gallon on the highway in terms of towing you're looking at 4 500 pounds because of course something like this is not really built for everyday towing duties however it is perfectly fine if you need to bring a toy to the woods in the back you're looking at 33.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity fold down the second row and you can have a maximum of 73. back here you also get a couple nice things this top is of course removable and back here we also get a 12-volt socket but other than that not a lot to talk about other than one little gripe you really have to maneuver these doors correctly you cannot open the top part until the bottom part is open and you have to be really careful that the bottom is all the way open there's a spot right here where it will pinch if you don't have this all the way out to me that just seems like poor design because eventually somebody's going to screw that up like the previous bronco this has a removable hard top only i don't have any place to put this where it won't get scratched so i'm gonna go ahead and put it back okay let's check out this back this isn't too bad i got plenty of room for my knees lots of room for my head i like this grid type system that they have behind the seat that allows me to use velcro or carabiners or any type of tie down to secure gear that's pretty cool down here i have ac power as well as usb a and usbc controls for the windows are actually down here as well because of course we can take the doors off so that way they keep most of the electronics right there arm rest yeah even have one of those with two cupholders oh this is pretty good raptor oh i am stoked let's go ahead and power it on with a raptor version you kind of expect something special and i feel like that's what i'm getting here now do note that this does have some extra options including a carbon fiber package that adds carbon fiber to the wheel to the shifter to the handles and i actually think that looks really cool if you don't want it fine but it did add to the price to this test unit and i think it looks just awesome so we have a beautifully wrapped leather steering wheel we have red contrast stitching as well as a red center marker up here that same red is carried down here to the transmission controller boot oddly enough though up here we have a brown contrast stitching not sure why that's different but the red is carried on through little elements throughout the cabin and i think it looks really great especially with this optional carbon fiber group now the gauge cluster is all digital here and there's just so much stuff on this vehicle i'm not going to do it all here some of it will do while we're on the road but i just want to touch on that you can customize that a little bit we have raptor information pages which are unique to this vehicle i can look at raptor status and it'll give me a breakdown of vehicle traction control steering the shock setting the exhaust setting and the off-road mode in a very easy to see display right there really like that that is great i also have an off-road status setting very easy to see tons of gauges tire pressures pitch roll power distribution there's so much stuff here it's just so much stuff speaking of the raptor settings i can access raptor settings right down here very quickly with the r button i can also change my steering feel immediately with a button there and then on the right side is where i can change my exhaust and my suspension settings again with a single touch of a button no needing to monkey around with the different goat modes you can just kind of say exactly what you want right here of course this does have goat modes and goat modes are great because they take all of the different aspects of customization you can do this vehicle and make them a single click option so for example if i go all the way from slippery to tow sport normal off-road let's just say i go to the most extreme rock crawl what will rock crawl do well it's going to tell me to put the transmission into neutral because it's going to automatically shift from too high to 4 low it's going to turn on that front display it's locking the rear locker and it's disconnecting the front sway bar for maximum articulation that's a lot of stuff and all i had to do was twist the knob now granted i can do all of this manually as well but why i mean if this one single knob will do it that's a lot quicker right and then it also changes my display to a cool off-road specific display that gives me all of my status very easy to read okay now let's go ahead and switch it back into normal drive mode and then everything should switch back 4x4 is shifting back into too high which is the most economical setting those are shutting off and we're back to a normal display very cool of course they didn't skimp on the day-to-day stuff this does have adaptive cruise control with lane detection we'll try that out a little bit later and then over here we have just a great infotainment system this is running the latest ford sync and it is it's really awesome you of course have built-in navigation with natural speech apps including apple carplay and android auto settings where you can change everything and then features that are specific to the vehicle now in terms of driver assistance this is fully loaded we have lane keep pre-collision rear view camera blind spot information parking aid cross traffic alerts and driver alert to tell you if you're getting uh a little woozy while driving we have a little tray on the right here where we can switch between some easy quick visible stuff so for example i have an off-road status on the right while i'm still running navigation on the left it really is just a nice customizable setup if you want to see a deeper tour of the infotainment system we have a full review of the normal bronco where we dive a little bit more into that if you're buying a bronco raptor that's not really what you're all about the seats here are very comfortable i love the combination of leather and suede the stitching looks really great they are of course heated with three stages of heat and i have full power adjustments also the passenger gets all power adjustments as well and then floor mats yeah mud mats all around so gone over all the features now it's time to take this to the trail we're going to take this all the way to our test course we're going to see how it does honestly i don't think we have a problem today but i think what we're really going to see is just how good this vehicle is [Music] oh man that sounds good so i'm gonna set the exhaust for sport mode and we're gonna floor it onto the freeway okay that thing sounds cool obviously this is a big box on wheels and uh because of that it's a little loud and not just terms of exhaust but also in terms of just wind noise right now i'm doing about 70 miles per hour on the freeway and i'm getting wind noise all over the place but you know it's a box what do you expect sitting position is very upright i have excellent visibility which gives me a commanding perspective of the road now the hood line is big and squared off and it gives me a good indication where my tires are even though this is a massive vehicle with just those extra fender flares are huge this has standard cruise control which means i can basically turn it on set my target speed and that's where i sit the only other thing it has beyond that is lane detection and lane detection can either give me an indication or it can bump me back in my lane but it is not a center tracking system so if you're looking for something that has more assists this is not the vehicle for you but most people who buy a vehicle like this aren't buying it because of adaptive cruise control or even all of the safety stuff although this does have collision mitigation blind spot warning and all the stuff you would kind of expect the transmission included here is a 10-speed automatic and yeah in 10th gear it is still actually revving pretty high i'm doing 70 miles per hour and it's at 2000 rpm if i were to bump down using the paddles here 23 27 3007 4006 kind of gives you an idea here this thing is really geared for off-road [Music] does have good sound i'm driving in two-wheel drive mode right now because that gives me the best economy no reason to go into four although i do have a for auto if things get a little dicey i can always switch into that and not commit to a full locked center that way it'll switch between two and four as necessary but just not really seeing that i'm in normal driving mode right now and yeah there's a lot of body roll going on here this is built for off-road action and you can feel it when going through twisty roads like these now the nice thing here is that this does have independent suspension unlike the jeeps that this would be compared to and that is really a huge advantage for anybody who drives to the off-road destination if you have a dedicated jeep as an off-roader that's totally fine but jeeps aren't really that good on pavement in fact they're pretty bad it's just not their strong suit but here yeah this isn't too bad it's a little soft it's a little rolly let's switch the drive mode into sport and see what that changes okay that turns the steering input into sport and also changes the exhaust note into the louder sport mode oh my gosh that thing sounds awesome it's also holding those gears way longer yeah it shifts at redline which is just over 6000 probably around 6200 i can't override of course with paddle shifters and i love these big shifters they feel really good to my hand this thing is fun have i mentioned this is fun this thing's really fun and i haven't even taken it off-road yet it's nuts this thing is for off-road and so we're going to be heading out to our off-road test course to see how well this does i expect it honestly to absolutely crush everything on the course but before we do that i'm going to dip off the freeway here and we're going to test out the 0 to 60 to see just how quick this thing is first thing i'm going to do is pull off onto the shoulder here i'm going to check out the turning radius so two lanes or three fully crank accelerate around the corner uh two and a half two and a half lanes so i'm gonna pull up to the line here and i'm going to put the transmission i'm just going to keep it in too high i'm going to put the transmission in drive i am going to make sure that the drive mode is set into sport we're just going to mosh the throttle three two one go well wheel spin that's ko2's on a wet surface for you and 60 in 6.33 seconds it was a little skittish though because these ko2's get a little slippery in wet weather i'm gonna switch this into four auto and we're gonna try that launch again three two one and go oh yeah oh much quicker out of the hole and sixty and six point two seven seconds this thing's pretty quick especially considering that it is geared not for zero to 60 runs but for off-road so we're gonna have a lot of fun with this i'm already having a lot of fun with this the bronco and bronco raptor are fun to drive on pavement but it's not really why you would buy one of these things because there are significant downsides i mean clearly the body has a lot of role the tires that this one in particular comes with the ko2's are loud and the grip just kind of goes away when the road gets wet i also know that ko2's are not particularly good in ice although they are good in deep snow so i would i recommend this for somebody doing a weekly commute probably not but you don't pay the money on something like this to use it as a commuter car there's other vehicles that are way better especially when you look at the mpgs this gets i mean 15 16 no thank you however our next test is gonna show you really why you want the raptor we're gonna take this to our off-road course we're gonna have a lot of fun [Music] i can tell that the course has grown over a bit it's been super wet out here for the last several months and we haven't been able to run the courses and clearly it's had an opportunity uh for nature to regain a foothold but that's okay we're here with the bronco raptor to turn these into roads again so what am i going to do here let's set this up so the easiest thing to do is actually turn that fan down it is super hot though so the easiest thing to do here is just to change a goat mode into an off-road mode so i'm going to switch it into off-road this isn't anything particularly hard but what it will do is switch us into four high and lock the rear diff but i see there's a lot of rocks here and i don't want to risk a puncture so i'm going to go ahead and move the goat mode all the way over to rock crawl now what rock crawl will do is i'm going to shut this into neutral it'll put it into 4 low it disconnects the front sway bar engages the rear locker and that's pretty much all i need to do put it back into drive and now i'm crawling camera turns on and i get tire tracks here so i can place my wheels now this thing is so incredibly wide 9.8 inches wider than a base bronco that is mental so the goal here is basically just show how we can crawl along these rocks and in a vehicle like this you just don't have to worry about much uh the fact is ford didn't just make this faster and taller it also reinforced all of the key components because there were a couple things that had failed on the old bronco or the not old but you know the base bronco ford really wanted to be sure that something with raptor in the name was going to be able to get through anything so they reinforced like control arms under body bits all the stuff that you know that you really need in clutch situations let's go ahead and we're just going to keep crawling up and instead of taking the easy line i'm going to take the hard line to the right because bronco it don't care this is the honey badger of the suv world that's for sure let's cut straight across here oh in case you're curious how much of an angle this is we're at a peak 21 22 degrees yeah clearly that was extraordinarily easy for a vehicle as capable as this whereas pretty much anything else might struggle there outside of a jeep wrangler uh this thing yeah just pounced through it no problem i'm still in rock mode and we're about to go down a steep hill on the way to the sidewinder and i just saw a snake outside the door so aptly named in case you're wondering why we named them what we did because we actually have snakes here so i'm going to turn this into let's see trail control with one pedal drive use set button for trail control there now at this point i can use the cruise control system to change the descent speed from half how what's the slowest we can do here we can do one mile per hour and then i can go faster and faster and it will ease me down the hill very slowly away from the snake that's back there seriously like you cannot see those things until you're stepping on them around here so the neat thing about trail control is that not only will it ease me downhill safely it'll also go uphill as well if you've watched our toyota trd videos you know that is very similar to toyota's crawl control there we go and on to the next thing now that we've made it this far it's time to hit the logs and i am going to deactivate trail control because i just want to drive this one myself now in terms of features i want to keep the front sway bar disconnected i'm going to keep the rear locker engaged there's really not much else to do here it's going to go ahead and drive over it where other vehicles have issues with this combination of articulation locker and 37s makes this super easy it's kind of almost embarrassing to other vehicles but this is purpose built so what do you expect right and then for the final climb this has given issues to many vehicles i don't expect we'll have problems today for the combination of all the stuff this has should be a cakewalk so keeping rear locker on keeping the sway bar disconnect i'm just going to gun up it [Music] no problem the right tool for the right job always gets it done yes so are we done yet well not really there's something i've been wanting to do and i've needed a very capable vehicle to get it done i'm not going to tell you what it is though just wait and see that's proper off-roading right when there's uh literally no road yeah i think so so yeah we're just gonna drive up a rattlesnake infested hill because of course i am i also feel like you know you gotta really challenge this thing and rock crawling yeah everybody's done that but has anybody gone up a hill like this i don't think recently this will be interesting to say the least so there's going to be some things we need to look out for here first off we need to keep an eye out for large boulders because a boulder will end our day very quickly yeah basically boulders trees ditches that i don't expect because this is literally no road nobody's ever driven here i did do a quick loop on the lower part so you'll see tire tracks but nothing significant i mean i could use the trail mode let's do that set trail speed trail control active set the climb speed to two miles per hour sure why not and we'll just slowly go up the hill and we'll look for snakes while we're at it so we have so much ground clearance with this thing we have articulation we have a great four-wheel drive system i mean there's really no reason why we shouldn't be able to do this our incline is now at 16 degrees 17 degrees this is just going to get steeper as i go too 18 degrees so far i love this trail cam it's really good resolution makes it super easy to see if there's any boulders in my way which is kind of important let's go this way because i don't like that shrub just gonna let this do its thing what are we at now 18 degrees i think it's going to get a little steeper here 18 still 18. huh well this wasn't so bad now could i do this in a subaru crosstrek well no ground clearance is an issue it might technically be able to do it but i would be very much concerned about the safety of the vehicle wow that was uh that was shockingly easy [Music] [Music] so what goes up must come down see how this does now so i'm going to go ahead and use the trail system still [Music] so it's automatically grabbing the brakes for me i don't even have to worry about it and i can go ahead and increase my speed by hitting set and then from here it'll just ease me down that look like that topped out at about 22 degrees there before that's pretty steep [Music] looking for snakes looking for snakes this is the way to hunt for snakes when you're safely inside a fully enclosed fully enclosed suv nice feel like i'm on safari here so with a flick of goat mode over to baja this should allow for maximum wheel spin do i need to have wheel spin no we've already proven that it's not necessary however i also proved that there's no rocks in the way so let's floor it okay now we're done for driving sports tv thanks for watching i'm ryan
